—It's Mouse's first night at Miss Moon's Moonlight School, but Mouse is shy—too shy to even say hello. Luckily, with help from Miss Moon and her new friends Bat, Cat, and Owl, a game of hide-and-seek makes Mouse feel right at home.
Mouse is shy. She arrives early to Miss Moon's Moonlight School. Mouse hides behind the curtain. When Miss Moon calls roll, Bat, Owl and Cat all answer but Mouse does not. Miss Moon ponders where Mouse is until Mouse calls out in a soft, shy voice. Everyone agrees Mouse is a good hider. They decide to play hide-and-seek before midnight snacks. Miss Moon finds everyone but Mouse. Where is mouse hiding?
This book has Miss Moon as a witch. Her bookshelves have books on magic and spells and magic wands. The atmosphere is conducive to acceptance of everyone, not to a spooky holiday season, though it could be used as a reassurance Halloween read. It helps acclimate young students to be less shy and more outgoing. The details in the pictures are outstanding. The text is free flowing and intimate. The students will enjoy discovering where mouse is hiding.
Another picture book that lured me in with its absolutely presh cover. Animals trotting to witch familiar school, lil bows on their tails and satchels in their lil paws? Reader, I’m d-e-d dead from the cute. So in love with the color palette // cool blues and purples and pops of color in accessories and decorative flag strings and paint cans and teeny desks for the animal students. And such a sweet design for the witch teacher, star showered pointy hat wreathed in herbs. They play hide and seek (to give Mouse a chance to show some courage) and omg Battie, you silly, I love her!! Her spectacles and the fact that she tried to hide behind a fishbowl #myoblivioustwin Just a very cute lil day-in-the-life story and another example of a “life should be this spoopy way” book.
(Although I’m wondering how the animals feel about the animal ingredients lining the bookshelves?? (Eyes of newts and toes of frogs?? Ethically sourced/donated??))
Mouse is shy on the first night of school so he arrives early and hides behind the curtain. When Miss Moon takes attendance she cannot find Mouse. She calls for him and he quietly steps out. Everyone compliments him on being so good at hiding. Miss Moon says they can all play hide and seek before their midnight snack. Miss Moon finds everyone else except Mouse so she has to call him out again. Then they all have a midnight snack. Mouse has so much fun that he forgets about being shy and he never hides from his friends again, unless they are playing hide and seek! http://julianaleewriter.com/books-ali...

This is a cute picture book about a shy little mouse on her first night at school. The little mouse attends school for nighttime animals. Everyone happily discovers that she is very good at hiding! This would be a nice book to share with young children about to start school for the first time. It would also be a good companion to The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn.
An ode to shyness, "Mouse's First Night at Midnight School" is perfect for the pre-K and K sets who are new (and maybe a little timid/jittery) about making new friends. The illustrations give off a Halloween vibe, but the story is perfectly suitable for year-round enjoyment.
mouse is very nervous to go to moonlight School for the first time. her teacher is gentle and kind. mouse makes friends with cat, bat, and owl. The illustrations were adorable.
School was ready to start, but when Miss Moon called the role Mouse did not answer. Everyone looked around and did not see Mouse. Where was Mouse? Surely she would not miss the first night of Moonlight School.
Can you spy Mouse on the book cover? She is quite small and very quiet.
If you want to know what happens on the first night of Moonlight School you will need to read the book.
We know some children are shy and have a hard time being in a new place with strangers. Mouse is one of those children. This sweet story is a lesson in overcoming fears, making new friends, along with obeying your parents, who often say, "Always be polite and follow the rules".
I found the illustrations depict the dark night and moon with many of it's nocturnal creatures in a way children can get a perfect image in their minds of the story that is being told.
I highly recommend this book.
Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from Candlewick Press/NosyCrow for an honest review. I was in now way compensated for this review.
Mouse’s First Night at Moonlight School Maybe Mouse feels just like someone you know who is uncomfortable on their first night of school. (The students in her class are all nocturnal animals, so naturally they go to school at night.) The other kids in the class and Miss Moon know how to encourage Mouse to come out and join the class. Adorable pictures, making a game out of finding Mouse on each page, and counting make this book a good pre-school read-aloud. Be sure to use a tiny mouse voice when reading!
The timing of this book was great. We had just read Angel Child Dragon Child and talked a lot about what it would be like to be the new kid at school. Mouse is the new "kid" at his school. His answer to dealing with his nervousness is to hide - perfectly logical!
I had to chuckle that the other two classmates are a cat and an owl - two animals that feed on mice. No wonder Mouse hid!
The teacher actually is a witch in the story. Mouse is hidden on most of the pages. It is a fun book to read.
What an adorable book! Shy Mouse is nervous about her first day at Moonlight School with Miss Moon so she hides. When she sees how fun school can be she gets over her fear and joins in a game of hide and seek. This had lovely pen and ink drawings and a sweet story. A perfect book for children just starting school to help ease their fears.
I loved this book. It is cute and adorable. The illustrations are fantastic. I can see may mom's, teachers, and librarians reading this book to kids and asking them to find mouse...or spiders or others things as well.
Mouse’s First Night at Moonlight School by Simon Puttock, illustrated by Ali Pye – A cute little mouse hides on her first day of her new school and slowly comes to realize that she can have fun and make friends at school. Very cute. Adorable accompanying illustrations.
A very shy mouse has trouble even saying hello on her first night of school, but a game of hide-and-seek with Miss Moon and her classmates Bat, Owl, and Cat may help her come out of her shell.
Shy students will love Mouse and her special skill at hiding. A cute new spin on the back to school books Mouse and her nighttime friends are sure to be a quick hit.
