A ten-day wilderness hike through an isolated part of picturesque Maine is exactly what Beth needs to center herself after losing her husband to cancer. Even better? Her best friend of twenty years, Sharon, is tagging along. Despite an ominous warning from the outfitter’s grizzled employee about a woman who recently disappeared, neither of them is troubled by the remoteness of the trail or lack of cell service. They’re experienced hikers. And adventure awaits.
Just not the way they imagined.
Something evil lurks in the woods, and they can’t shake the feeling they’re being watched. Spooked, the women welcome the company of the handsome stranger who saves Sharon from nearly falling over a cliff. Especially Sharon who’s always hunting for her next man. They’re a great trio…
Until Beth wakes up the next morning to an empty camp.
As Beth goes to search for them, she comes face-to-face with a terrifying sight. A masked hunter with a rifle who utters a single
S. E. Green is the award-winning and best-selling author of young adult and adult books. She grew up in Tennessee where she dreaded all things reading and writing. She didn’t even read her first book for enjoyment until she was twenty-five. After that, she was hooked! When she’s not writing, she's usually traveling or hanging out with a rogue armadillo that frequents her backyard.
So I did not realize this was a novella at first, and I was like wow everything is happening really fast in this book haha. In my defense, I just got this from Kindle Unlimited because it looked interesting. Which it was a fun, quick read. It wasn’t anything groundbreaking but it did keep my attention.
The Plot: Beth just lost her husband, and she and her best friend Sharon decide to go on an adventure, the kind of thing they have done a lot in all of the years they’ve been friends. They decide to go for a ten day hiking trip in Maine, where there is no phone service, and they are deep into the forest.
I liked how the plot kept a good pace and stayed interesting. I felt like I was watching a horror movie play out just because of some of the decisions that Beth made that maybe weren’t the smartest. But hey, who knows exactly what to do in situations like that anyway, and when push came to shove, home girl had no problem at all fighting for her life.
I’m going to be honest, right away I knew that Luke was going to be evil. I was like oh he just happens to see them several times on the trail, they meet up and hang out, and then he suddenly shows up tied to a tree? Yeah I knew he was evil for sure.
I knew Jane was just a random mountain woman, but at one point I did think Curtis was helping Luke. Now that I know that Jane and Curtis were both innocent, I do feel bad that they died. But you can’t blame Beth, honestly, girl was trying to run and fight for her life.
Overall, an engaging, if predictable read, and I enjoyed it in the short time it took me to read it.
The Characters: For such a short story, the characters were pretty well rounded. Sharon was clearly the more spunky, adventurous one, while Beth, although also adventurous, was a little bit more reserved.

DO NOT mess with Beth. She listened to some solid advice and applied. Sharon could learn a thing or two. Don’t assume killers are typically creepy looking dudes. Serial killers are very good at their game due to one main skill: MANIPULATION. They can alter their look, behavior and speech in order to gain one main thing from their prey: TRUST. BEWARE!!
Very scary story about a woman being hunted in a forest. Who is it? The pursuer is a mystery person with a mask who chases the woman through the woods. This kept me on my seat until the very end.
As Beth is running for her life the only thing the killer says is " run!" . This was a poorly written book based off it going so fast , nothing making sense and the ending was just terrible . you get no answers to why the " killer" did what they did and a lot of things the two friends did were just dumb . don' t waste your time reading this .
