One monstrous moment…and I fall for the dragon shifter…literally

Falling through a portal to the realm of the Yeavering was not in my life plan, but neither was being chased by my aunt with a gun.

Falling straight into the arms of a dragon shifter wasn't on the cards either…but here we are.

The Lambton Wyrm is the most dangerous, most feral of all the monsters in the Yeavering and he has decided I belong to him.

Which, as he has no idea what I am, or what to do with me, is not ideal. Neither is the curse binding him, the one which says I am his fated mate, and the only way he gets to stay alive is if he breeds with me…

As if my day could get any worse…I have to teach the Lambton Wyrm all about mating, without being accidentally eaten by the big growly grump, regardless of how desirable he might be with his chiselled good looks and abs for days...

Looks like things are about to get interesting.

I did not ask for a fated mate, the Yeavering gave one to me.

And this one is my mortal enemy, a human.

She is not like me. Her anatomy is wrong and she smells…clean. But she is the key to unlocking my curse.

So I strip her of all weapons, including the strange holster on her chest and wait. Providing we share a bed, she will be mated and my curse lifted. Or at least that is what I was taught by my books. So when the human tells me it is not so, why should I believe her?

No matter how good she smells, humans have killed Wyrms for centuries. I cannot give in to the way my heart flips in my chest whenever she is near.

Until the day I discover exactly what mating is…

Forced proximity
Grumpy/sunshine
Fated mates

Cinnamon roll MMC
and so much more!

I want to thank Hattie Jacks for an ARC of this book. All thoughts are my own.

The Longing had a great premise and it started off really well, but I found the plot to be disjointed and the characters lacked any real chemistry.

I love the idea of an MMC who has never met a woman before, but instead of coming off as endearing it came off as immature. Several scenes made me feel like the MMC was a teenage boy throwing a temper tantrum rather than a wyrm.

The world was interesting and the introduction of side characters was a nice change to plot, but I did find myself wanting to stop reading this by around 50%.

I think the book had a lot of potential but unfortunately it just didn’t quite hit for me. I’ve seen a few other people say they really enjoyed it though so it may be for you!

I received an advance copy for free from Hattie Jacks. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is hands down the worst thing I've ever read, and I've read some really weird stuff over the years. Normally this would have been the perfect type of book for me. I ADORE monster romance. It was a struggle to finish. My eyes were watering the whole time because my brain was trying to strangle my eyeballs. There is not enough brain bleach on the planet to make me forget the atrocity that I just read.

This whole book was created just for shock value. Every page had something more weird and insane than the previous one, and none of it made a dang bit of sense as a whole. There were a ton of inconsistencies from one page to the next, and even from paragraph to paragraph. The writing style kept constantly changing even a few paragraphs later. We kept getting tons of random bits of MacGuffin that would instantly pop up with no explanation, that completely changed the past plot in a way that was bizarre.

I just couldn't get past how immature and childlike Fernrother is. It was like dealing with a little kid. It kept throwing me out of the story and made the vibe really weird at times. It was hard to get past an adult woman, being with an adult male that had the mentality of a small child.

Also literally less than a minute after they met face to face, he shoves his face in her lady bits while she is trying to pee, smells her pee, picks her up, and was completely shocked she didn't have a pizzle. What??? I can't even begin to count the times we talked about her bra and undies, the location of these items, and the stolen pocket panties.

Also if I read the word "pizzle" one more time I am going to scream. It was in the book 75 times. You heard me right, 75 times that my eyes were inflicted with the word pizzle.

If you like tropes, this book has every one you can think of stuffed into it down to a magical crone that dishes out period panties, and a magic smex instruction book. We have a wang that can pick stuff up, has venom, and can clamp itself right to your cervix not unlike what happens at the GYN's office. Oh, and human blood has enough iron to melt stuff too, even though the human had already been getting blood all over the place with no issue previously.

Then the book can't decide if it filled her womb so much it expanded, or a few chapters later it couldn't happen until he gave her a mate bite. Which is it? Apparently a standard basic human decided to go into an omegaverse style heat too. That's one of the more noticeable spots where the writing style completely changes.

Save your sanity and avoid this one.

Of all the alternative male genitalia names that could have been used, PIZZLE was not what I expected. Every time I saw it on page I couldn’t help but read it in a variation of Snoop-Doggs mannerisms like ‘Fo shizzle my pizzle’.
It felt like it fit, given how unserious this book was.

Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t hate this book, but it was disappointing. This had the potential to be a great story, but it was executed poorly which ruined it for me.
I questioned whether this was edited by a computer program or AI rather than an actual person because it was off. Almost as if the Author had put together something digestible but then the AI came through and sliced it up, changing areas which birthed itself into something inconsistent and misaligned.

There also felt as if entire parts had disappeared, chunks missing and chapters that picked up in a different direction from where it left off prior.
There was information and backstory that was not properly explained, pieces that were written in and then forgotten about. It made so much of the story progression seem false.

I liked the idea of each character, but the continuity of each characters being was nonexistent.
FMC is supposedly a traumatised woman with no back bone, but that doesn’t remain consistent throughout. There’s also no evidence of growth for her to have changed the way she did.
MMC was supposedly an innocent and clueless being with a brutish recluse’s personality. But again, this doesn’t remain consistent and there isn’t much development here either.

The story had good dialogue but, with all the issues in the writing and narrative, it didn’t flow well. Every scene felt off balance and as things progressed, the relationship between the MCs felt forced.

This is a good read if you only care for the smut and nothing more.

This was far from my fave Hattie Jacks book. I liked the initial set up and some of the spice was fun. The connection between the MCs was severely lacking.

Spice: 4/5

Triggers, abduction, captivity, blood, burn (side character), parent death (past), grief, forced nudity, pregnancy, death threats, references to war, threat of gun violence, abusive parent figure

👽 monster romance
🌶️🌶️🌶️
❤️‍🔥 forced proximity
✨ inexperienced mmc
1/5 writing quality
2/5 story
1/5 character likability/development
5/5 cover art

I was so mf hyped to read this based on the marketing by the author 😟😢 I am devastated to be let down in such an extreme way. like it truly wasn't even bad but fun at the same time. it was simply just bad. 💔

very sad i didn't like this. I love a silly, fun alien/monster romance, so the actual premise is not what turned me off. and the cover art is *chefs kiss*. my issue was with the quality of the content. it unfortunately read like a first draft. everything felt a bit rushed and yet drawn out at the same time. it read very juvenile. and the romance was bleh. this suffered from a case of "I have no idea what they saw in each other." it seemed like they fell for each other simply because the author said so. and I kept getting lost on the world-building. I still don't fully know or understand his two forms.

and again, I love weird, wacky stuff, so the feral things in this book is not what turned me off---it was how dumb it was. like I'm sorry, but why did he need to have his own term for his dick... like there was no reason for him to be saying shit like "my pizzle".... HUH? why is that the word the author chose?!?! and then there were just some really odd word choices, like “Ripe with my young.” and then there was this: Fenrother growls/snarls/purrs into my neck. how did no one catch this? how did beta readers miss this?? this leads me to believe the whole book was rushed and not edited as well as it could have been.

the potential was there. the marketing worked on me. I just wish this book had been developmentally edited more. and I wish she didn't write stuff for shock value. like you wanna add kinky shit like him eating her out on her period?! be my mf guest! but adding in such extremes of him being clueless to what "mating" is and wanting to study her up close while she pisses because she doesn't have a "pizzle" just felt dumb and like the author was writing it to be "shocking" just for the hell of it.

this is absolutely no hate to the author. I might give her another chance because the concepts of her books sound so fun. I hope this was a one-off rushed mess and not all her books are like this 💔

ARC Read:

❤ Virgin/clueless MMC
❤ Grumpy cinnamon roll MMC
❤ Patient FMC
❤ Two abandoned souls healing together

Fernrother grew up without parents and his knowledge of the world in general is quite lacking.
He thinks babies are made when you sleep next to a woman so Alice has a lot of explaining to do 😂

Alice was sold by her aunt to the fairy realm and the fairy queen plans on using Alice to control Fernrother.

I loved the growth of the relationship between Fernrother and Alice.

The downside for me personally was the use of the word "pizzle"... No just no 😆

I won’t give it a star rating since I couldn’t bring myself to finish it but it was just so fucking boring. I didn’t give two shits about what was happening the whole damn book. And it also made no sense like half the time.

DNF @ 62%.

Monster (wyrm. Dragon man). Human man form with wings and tail. Scarred MMC. Abducted/abandoned orphan FMC. Grumpy and withdrawn MMC. Totally innocent MMC who raised himself alone. Virgin MMC.
Learning body differences. Fated mates. “Pizzle” and “slit”. British English.
Cums in pants. Monster cock (huge, scaled, dexterous tip that clamps onto cervix). Venom to enable her to take his cock. Too big to fit. Breeding. Cervix piercing. Knotting. Hair scenting. Panty stealing and scenting.

I read this as a ARC, and this review is of my personal opinions. Thank you so much for the arc.
There are aspects of this book that I really liked, and some that I didn’t. I love the naivety of the mmc, and the overall himbo behavior. However, the characteristics of both the female main character, and the male main character seemed incongruent. Their motivations seemed confusing, and the world building overall seemed confusing as well. While I loved the overall premise of the book, I felt like the actual execution was disorganized.

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the book plots I cannot change, the courage to not read the books I hate, and the wisdom to know the difference" - Jesus probably

This book is - say it with me -bad! The plot is all over the place if I'm being honest and the characters motivations are so confusing it made my eyes cross while reading. If you do like the general idea of the plot but want a book that makes a little more sense, I recommend "A Soul to Heal" the second book in the DuskWalker Brides series by Opal Reyne. These books have a lot of the same tropes, but "A Soul to Heal" handles the MMCs innocence and inexperience a bit better in my opinion.

NOW WAIT

You may think that I am discouraging you from reading this book and that is actually not the case! I actually think everyone (who enjoys monster romance) should be able and willing read this book JUST because it is silly and bad but makes you laugh. Writing a book is a beautiful magical thing and this book is no exception. Thank you to this author for sitting down and writing about your very specific kink that I just happen to not share. Love you queen <3

I received this as an ARC to give my honest opinion. Thank you.

I'm rating this a 4.75⭐ out of 5 ⭐

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I really loved the premise of the MMC not seeing a female before and being so confused by her. I love their dynamic as they progressed and I love how he cared for her and tried so hard for her and she with him🥹. I love the FMC and I love how she's just so human in the most relatable way for me personally (like needing to pee during something very scary). It was an easy read and I have laughed so much, more than I have at a book in a while. I just love the MMC and his complete lack of knowledge so much. All in all I'm really glad that I read this book! I could relate to both of them with some of the things that they've been through when it comes to family and the past so that really resonated with me. I highly recommend this book! I already miss reading about them!

I read an ARC copy of this book for an honest review.
This was my 1st book read by Hattie Jacks. It won't be the last.
I love a dragon shifter romance book, and this didn't disappoint.
Alice is the FMC who finds herself in a situation where she was sold out to the fae queen by her aunty. She is then fated to a dragon shifter.
Fenrother, the dragon shifter is adorable. he's the grumpy MMC who does not know anything about the female body or how mating works in general. All his knowledge has come from the limited books her has in his castle.
It is left to Alice to explain and show Fenrother everything. Fenrother's character is hilarious, I love him so much 🥰
He has the best word for his 🍆 I have ever heard. I laughed so much.
thank you, Hattie, for thus amazing read 📚

Thank you so much to Hattie Jacks for the earc, all opinions are my own.

I was not familiar with the Northumberland folklore tales but I really enjoyed this book. We start out with the FMC, Alice, being given to the faeries by her aunt. She lands in the world of the Yeavering and the MMC, the Lambton Wyrm named Fenrother. He is the most fearsome monster in the area, and believing now that his mate has been delivered directly to him.

Fenrother is fearsome, but only knows of the world by reading his texts, and this applies to women too. He doesn't understand her lack of a pizzle, or anything else about her.

I received a free ARC copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

DNF at about 15% . I just can’t get over the MMC calling his genitalia “pizzle”. He comes off as really immature instead of inexperienced. Minutes after meeting the FMC, he sticks his face in her pee. I just can’t.

I like the world building and the FMC, and I’m a big monster romance fan, but unfortunately I just can’t get over the weirdness of this one.

So I am not going to rate this one 😂

It would be unfair because I discovered I am not the biggest fan of monster romances that involve tails and such 💀

Our FMC was betrayed and found herself with a dragon who goes by Wyrm? Lol made me think of “worm” too often for comfort but Mr. Wyrm doesn’t know anything about females …..so she has to teach him 😂 that’s all I will say.

It wasn’t bad but the world that was being built didn’t really appeal to me. So I probably won’t read the rest in the series.

Honestly, all the reviews talking about and being bothered by the word ‘pizzle’ entertained me more than the book. My only issue with the word choice was that the MMC was a dragon and not a bull or a Minotaur where saying pizzle would make more sense. *shrug*

I really enjoyed the premise of this story. I laughed a lot at Fenrothers lack of knowledge about most things. The back and forth between the main characters felt forced though. The story was a bit choppy and a bit rushed. But if I’m going purely off vibes, I really had fun with it!

What a great monster romance! I absolutely love Alice! She was sold off to the Fae kingdom, but ends up the Bride of our Wyrm, Fenrother.

Fenrother is an absolute teddy bear that has no idea about having a mate and what this actually means. His innocence is endearing, which is how he captivates Alice.
I love his protectiveness of her and the lightness of the reading.

A great story to get you out of any reading slump!

dnf at 64% only God knows why I even got this far and why this book has such a good rating

I have read Hattie Jack's books before, and they were good
This was just.. unexplainable

In German, we say: BITTE WAS!?
That is exactly what I thought on every page
it only got weirder, and I have read a lot of monster/alien stories so this is saying A LOT!
The mmc was in every sense of the word childish. I can't even fathom how someone would introduce this KID to sex!
let this be the last time I see the word "pizzle"

As someone who absolutely loves monster romances, I genuinely wanted to give this one a fair shot. Unfortunately, it just didn’t work for me. From the first page, I found myself thinking, “Wait, what’s going on?”and I was completely thrown off by the mention of “pizzle.” I gave it a few chapters, hoping it would click, but I just couldn’t get into it. I really did try.

Even though this one wasn’t a fit for me, I still want to thank Hattie Jacks for the opportunity to read an ARC of The Longing.

Beast w/venomous pizzle wonders why FMC don't have one

I was giggling and kicking my feet through the entire book. It's such a creative and feel good story, that has it all- from adventure to character growth, a fast pace, and hella spice (with a venomous fancy peen he's proud of lol). It stands alone with a complete HEA, & I can't wait to get the paperback when it drops.

Tropes:
🐉 dragon shifter MMC
🛏️ only one bed
🗡️he thinks she’s the enemy
🤣he thinks her bra is a wéapon
🐉v!rgin MMC
🤣culture clashes
🩲underwear hoarding
🐉MMC can’t understand why she doesn’t have a pizzle 🍆 and spends some time looking for it
🍆knotting
🍆brééding
🐉grumpy even for her
📜outdated courtship manual
🩸who hurt you/period

I'll never forget this book & will forever be looking for another like it.

I recommend for romantasy/monster romance fans who love a growly beast that everyone else fears but he tries for her (and we get to laugh at his arrogance while he gets it wrong and right).

If I had to compare the book to one I've read before, I'd say RK Munin's Human Pets of Talin series for all of the hilarious culture clashes.

Life's short read whatever you want!

What a hilarious read 📚 🤣 never knew a woman teaching a totally clueless dragon shifter would be so hilarious 😂

Alice, was amazing not only having to deal with being traded for wealth but to being taken by a dragon and deemed his mate. She took the situation as best as she could and the scenes between her and Fenrother were adorable as they grow closer and fell in love.

The scenes where she had to explain ...things to Fen were hilarious 😂

Fenrother was a lonely dragon that just wanted a mate, and Alice was it for him. Poor misunderstanding shifter, he had a whole castle to himself and after Alice moves in, he is starving for her attention, following her everywhere, trying to learn from her and about her as much as he can. He is so sweet to Alice, attentive to whatever she liked/wanted, and protective of her 💖

I felt for him, thinking he couldn't have a good life but when the moment came and he realised he made a mistake, he took charge and saved Alice❤️

I loved to see Fen gather a few monsters together and go after the queen, to save his love ❤️🙂‍↕️🐉

Thank you for the ARC🫶🏼

I received this book as an ARC and all thoughts are my own.

I loved the concept of this story with the MMC that had no idea what a women was and the first part of the book was quite good however it fell apart and became disjointed and all over the place.
The FMC was a people pleasing I can fix them type and the MMC was clueless and acted like a toddler having a tantrum at times, there was little chemistry between the characters even more so when other characters where introduced.
The world has so much potential and the premise was interesting it was just lacking all around and just didn’t quite hold my interest.
