“You always this stubborn?”
“You always this annoying?”

Thirty-two-year-old Claire Moore feels like her life is going up in flames. A newly single mom, she’s juggling a sick kid and a bartending shift when a fire breaks out at High Five in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Per usual, she has to save the day.

Enter Jake Schmidt: local firefighter, Marine veteran, and all around good guy who’s distracted by the captivating, strong, sassy, red-headed woman who manages to put out the fire moments before he arrives. And despite their tense first impression, he’s determined to win her over.

This blond guy isn’t her usual type, but with the chemistry building by the day, she has to decide if she wants to let him in. Trusting someone new isn’t easy, especially when you’ve been burned before.

This heartfelt Fourth of July romance is perfect for fans of strong heroines, golden retriever heroes, protagonists in their thirties, and steamy small town summer nights.

📖 The black-sheep of the Series
Ughhh… what do I even do with this one?
I’ve loved every book in this series, until now.
I feel like maybe I’m not the intended audience for this book.
I come to this series for the light reads and laughs, but this one had me shouting “Shut up,” “Stop it,” “Why?” and face-palming myself way too many times.

⚖️ Too Much Politics, Not Enough Page-Time
Going into it (and from the teasers I saw) I could tell it was going to be drenched in politics.
Normally that doesn’t bother me and I look forward to being challenged and provoked by thoughts and ideas.
But there was just too much going on (plot, characters, and politics) for a 200-page book.

💔 Meet the MCs
I don't know how to put this gently, but this opinion is mine and it's reserved for these 2 specific characters.

Claire was a red flag 🚩 masquerading as a woke feminist.
Jake was just… unrealistic. The word “perfect” was used 36 times in 200 pages. Just saying.
No actual tension, and when he said she “challenges” him, she was just being difficult, creating hurdles, and being downright insulting.
Claire judged EVERYONE in the book—and not in a funny, snarky way, but in a way that made me go “I’d never want to be friends with you.”
And Jake… no man is that way, nor should he be that easy-going with behaviour that’s basically a parade of red flags. 🚨

🎢 Fast-Track Romance (Spoiler-ish)
The cherry on top? Spoiler alert: They go on 4 dates in 4 days, leave on a fight, don’t talk for 2-3 weeks, and then suddenly say “I love you.”
I’m sorry. WHAT? WHY?

Thank you Grey's Promo and Serena for the ARC. Sorry this one didn't work out.

This was such a fun, flirty, and unexpectedly steamy read! Claire is strong, chaotic, and relatable, and Jake? Full-on golden retriever energy with a Pleasure Dom twist—yes please. Loved the small town vibes, the slow burn tension, and the emotional depth woven in between the banter. Perfect summer romance.

First ARC approval and first book from author Serena Pier. Thank you!

I enjoyed this read. I liked Claire so much. She's strong-willed, independent, guarded, and a great mom. Bratty at times, but the woman needs someone to show her how to be loved the right way. Enter Jake. Jake is such a green flag, too! I was swooning at every interaction he was having with Claire. And it was my first time ever learning a little bit about pleasure doms. 🫣🤭 I loved the banter between them, the chemistry, the teasing, and the build-up. But most of all, I'm a sucker for the "when you know, you know" types of love. I'm intrigued by Serena's writing and will definitely be reading the other novellas in this series.

Thank you to Grey's Promotions for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Claire Moore is having a very bad day. After getting a call in the middle of her bartending shift that her daughter is sick, a fire breaks out in the women's bathroom. But Claire is no damsel in distress, and she works to put out the fire while calling 911. When an emergency crew arrives, in the form of the gorgeous firefighter Jake Schmidt, Claire already has the situation under control. Jake can't stop thinking about the feisty redhead who refuses to take help from anyone, so he asks her out. Claire is hesitant to start something new as she heals from her divorce and focuses on her daughter, but Jake is hard to resist. The chemistry between the two explodes like fireworks, but only time will tell if this Fourth of July romance lasts after the smoke clears.

This novella was so fun! Serena Pier always does a fantastic job of packing lots of character development into her novellas. This one is a bit longer than the others in the High Five series, and I thoroughly enjoyed connecting with Claire. As a fellow mom who has trouble asking for help, I really understood where she was coming from. And Jake, the red-hot firefighter, was every green flag! Wow! He knew who he wanted and wasn't afraid of the work and time it took to win Claire over. This is definitely a slow burn romance (because someone is quite the gentleman), but you won't be disappointed when the fire catches! While this can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading the other novellas in the series to get the full experience. This is the perfect spicy romance read for a Fourth of July weekend!

Fireworks: guaranteed. This book was such a treaaaaaat over MDW, and you're really going to love it as we lead up to Independence Day. Falling for Red is the 5th book in The High Five Novella series, a collection of short and spicy holiday-themed romances... and I actually think this is my favorite one so far! It's a sexy crushable novella that can be read in a single sitting because, I'm telling you, you will not want to put it down.

𝓫𝓵𝓾𝓻𝓫:
“You always this stubborn?”
“You always this annoying?”

Claire so fiercely brave, sassy, and independent. She's recently divorced and a FT single parent to her daughter. Jake is Mr. August. Captain America. The Golden Retriever. A steamy-hot Marine turned small-town firefighter. And he's a giver (iykyk).

What more could you ask for in a pairing?! A fiery meet-cute encounter at Claire's workplace leads to a set of dates, some flirty banter and serious pining. Which leads to... 🥵phew —smouldering hot spice that will have you fanning yourself. The way Jake lifts and builds Claire up in such a gentle, respectful way is swoony.

Each book in this series can be read as a standalone, but some familiar faces make repeat appearances (especially in this one) so it's been really fun for me to read each one as they've been released to get updates on the previously beloved characters' relationship statuses.

This was such a cute read! Single mom Claire meets firefighter Jake after a fire happens in the bathroom at the High Five bar she works at. They hit it off and she ends up getting a little “vacation” while her daughter is at her dad’s. Her and Jake spend a lot of time together and let me tell you the spicy tension is definitely there and when it does happen!!! Lord!! I loved the relationship that Jake formed with gabby at the end! Overall a really cute read!

I was given the privilege of ARC reading this book, and it’s the first book I’ve read by Serena.

It took me about three hours to finish this because I could not put it down. She had me hanging on to every word the moment the story started!

The tension in this book is so well written that I could feel it as I was reading the scenes play out.

I am absolutely a small town romance lover and this book was no expectation.

The book itself is easily a 6 ⭐️ read alone but the spice that is in the book is *chefs kiss* 😘 she really pulled out all the things while writing this!!!

The characters and their attraction and yearning for each other is so well written you can literally feel it leaping off the page!!!

I can only give it 5 stars but it deserves more than that.

Spice level I’m giving it 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

I received this book as an ARC read from Serena Pier and Grey's Promotions and this is my honest review of Falling For Red

Falling For Red is the 5th book in the High Five Novella series and on a whole I liked the book, the chemistry and spicy scenes were much more believable and chemistry filled than the last book. That being said I dunno what it is with the previous fmc and this one but they absolutely don't seem focused on anything but sex, not taking no for an answer, and trying to find red flags over every little thing and it drove me nuts! She was extremely pushy and kept trying to get him to have sex with her when he made it clear he wasn't doing that on the first date. She also jumps to the dumbest conclusions about him without any context and said something was an ick which gave me the ick. I also wish the political bs wasn't a part of the book...it just wasn't needed, I don't read smut for feminism and politics. Now all that being said, there was good banter, great laughs and on the whole it was a cute book. Jake is an absolute dream with muscles, tats, height and is a Golden Retriever of a man who wants to just take care of her! He cares about connection and protecting her as well as her sweet little kiddo and BONUS he is Bilingual WOOOOT! Claire is a short fiery red head with oodles of sass! She has a past with an ex who is a jerk and whilst is a great father to their shared kiddo is mostly absent...She is scared to be hurt again and wonders if Jake will hurt her or if he is the one! Which leads her to moments of self doubt and pushes him away when they need each other the most...will she get her head outta her booty and give love a chance or will she loosen up and let Jake in and take care of her and her kiddo?? You gotta read to find out!

My opinions about the books I read and review are just that MY opinions...I will always implore the reader to read for themselves and come to their own conclusions we don't have to agree in order to enjoy a book or not!

This interconnected standalone series just gets better and better with each book!!

I loved that the main characters were in their thirties! While it’s not a later in life romance (which, don’t get me wrong, there is plenty of room in the romance space for those as well), it’s always refreshing to read about characters my own age. Characters who have been married, have been through rough patches, who tend to value the same things I do.

I loved that Claire had a 4 year old, Gabby, who she was willing to let others go for. As Gabby was of South American decent, Claire was very attuned to racism and even the smallest of details that may be red flags. I loved that she confronted Jake about his Red Lives Matter truck decal, and I loved more that he looked into the connotations these decals were sending across and decided to get rid of it. I appreciated that he educated himself in the background and didn’t just remove it for Claire, but because he didn’t like the connotation it had either.

I loved that Claire was reserved but also fiery when she opened up. Her teasing a guy when she likes him hit too close to home haha. I loved how Jake went with the flow but also took his values very much to heart. He had a great way of putting Claire at ease, while also not stifling her. Above all, their chemistry was literally FIRE! From the flirtatious teasings, to the absolutely ridiculous nicknames, to the spicy spicy spicy times they had together, these two were totally perfect for one another!

The spice was phenomenal. I loved that Jake really didn’t want anything too spicy to happen between them until she committed to him, and it made for some delicious tension 😊 Speaking of the spice…ummm…so…I loved the tantric sex that was explored in this. I honestly had no idea what tantric sex was before this book described it, but yeah…it was good. Glad to know the name for it…moving on from me…This was the perfect experience for Claire to have had being as guarded as she was. This very intimate act with the big-O not being the goal but just part of the overall experience worked wonders to bring her out of her own head and to connect them on a truly spiritual level. And my GOD were there some hot lines!! Here are some of my favorites:

“Keep looking at me while I give you something to blush about.”
Yes sir!

“When you squ!rt, then I know I’ve done my job.”
Yesssssssss

Nicholas, the MMC from book 1 in the series, continued to be a sweetie who was looking out for his people. He gave Claire a paid vacation because her daughter was sick and because she needed to be there instead of at work. He continued to be the ultimate good guy and I love when he pops up. The same goes for the rest of the characters in this series; it’s always fun to see past MCs show up again.

Thank you to Serena Pier for the opportunity to read this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.

If there is one thing about Serena is... she's going to deliver!
As you know, this is the 5th installment in the High Five Novella series and let me tell you... I ate it up!!! You don't technically have to read the series in order but it will provide more insight to all the side characters in each book if you did read them in order.

Okay with that being said, I love how fierce, strong, loyal and loving Claire is. She's been through it but will do anything necessary to do right by her adorable daughter Gabby. I also love some Latin representation!! I found Claire to be super relatable while the story progressed. She's doing her best!!
Jake... Trust me when I say, he is not what he seems! ( In a good way) it's giving.. if he wanted to he would and boy did he!!
I love how thoughtful and giving and LOVING he is. He has all his ducks in a row and his communication skills? AMAZING!
Each time I read a book from Serena Pier I think "Okay, the next book can't possibly top this one" But guess what? It does!! I love all the characters and each story line. I can't wait to read the final and last installment of the High Five Novella series... I just know it's going to be an epic conclusion to the series.

Unfortunately I did not like this one as much as the others. 1. Even though Jake was a sweetheart, he was just too much to fast, plus that’s the name of my ex so no lol 2. Claire was not a likable character, she gave me super whiplash and idk what Jake saw in her, but that’s my opinion. I felt the whole political thing wasn’t needed at all. the nickname he gave her “sparky” just reminds me of my boss since that’s what we call him and that’s all I thought about lol Overall the story was cute and I still enjoy this series so much! Just this one wasn’t it for me and that’s ok! I’m excited for the Halloween one!

These Novellas are getting longer and I'm loving it. All are based around different holidays and this one is based over the 4th of July weekend mainly but spans a little more than that too. Jake falls hard and fast for Claire when he attends a small fire at the bar she works, but Claire's life is complicated, she's a single mom, recently divorced with a difficult ex. Is she ready for a second chance at love...? Jake feels she's the one and is more than willing to put in the work to make her see how good they all could be together.

✨ARC Review✨

I could not put this book down! It was a quick read and I absolutely devoured it!

The chemistry between Clair & Jake was really good! The push and pull, the build up, and a little bit of a slow burn but not really, when you read it you’ll see why!🤭

She’s a single mom with a prick of an ex husband and he’s the golden retriever boyfriend who knows what he wants and he will make sure she knows it! ❤️‍🔥

10/10 recommend this book! Just read it, you won’t regret it!

I received this book as an ARC read from Serena Pier and Grey’s Promotions, and this is my honest review of Falling For Red.

So Jake is a fireman and a retired marine (yes, really), and Claire’s a bartender and single mom. Their first date had such fun flirty banter, and I loved that the relationship actually moved — quick succession of dates, nothing dragged out. It was cute and felt real.

Jake. My heart. Golden retriever energy in the BEST way. He cooks, he’s sweet, thoughtful, and just genuinely a good guy. Like, "Who do I have to thank for him being this way?!" 🥰 Their first kiss? 🔥. The chemistry is there, the banter is there, and those little “missions” he gives Claire throughout the book? YES. More of that. And the way he defends her — I melted. Completely.

Now Claire… deep breath. I get that she’s supposed to be guarded, but she really didn’t respect Jake’s boundaries — especially when he was clear about not wanting sex on the first date. He even had to shut her down with a line like, “If you're looking for a toy, then I don't think this is going to work.” Like?? Good for him, but also... yikes. And the constant “red flag this, red flag that” — girl, he’s literally amazing. Just let yourself be happy.

Also, the political angle thrown in? Not my thing at all. If this hadn’t been an ARC, I would’ve DNF’d right then. I read romance to escape, not for a debate.

But honestly? Jake made this book. He’s the kind of protective, golden-retriever book boyfriend I’ll be thinking about for a while. Loved him.

4 stars 💛

Arc review, thank you @ Greys Promotions.
(Also read the bonus chapters “Claire gets eight”

Claire is a newly single mom, who came out of a somewhat controlling relationship. On that note she’s not eager to let just anyone in.

Very hesitant, in best interest for her daughter Gabby.

It’s a new character in the High Five Novella series, Claire, who’s bartending at the High Five.
When one night, a fire erupts in the bar and the fire department was called.
Then she and Jake met.
She single handedly put out the fire, let that be something that Jake found so very hot…

That’s when the haunting in his mind began… “Claire”

Loved how he was so very gentle with everything.
Jake “August” Schmidt. *the department made a calendar, as told in an earlier novella, he was the Month “August”

🌶️🌶️ mixed Dom energy with cutesy romance
Can’t wait for book n•6

No spoilers. Read via kindle (ARC).

This is a novella, so yes it’s fast paced, insta-love, has a good storyline. The only thing that bothered me was the politic talk only because I use books to escape reality, but it was quick thing only like two times. Aside from that, I enjoyed it. The smut was good, aside from when the FMC was being pushy at some points. Overall it was a good quick read that had you giggling and feeling hot & bothered.

Would I recommend? Yes if you’re looking for quick spicy read. Just be cautious to not take these too seriously as they are punny for obvious reasons so don’t be mad about that.

Falling For Red is all around just a really fun and enjoyable read! The chemistry between the main characters builds the tension so well that you are right there with Claire breathing heavy and dying for him to touch her 🥵 The banter is great and as a self-identified ✨brat✨ was exactly my brand of witty and hot. A great balance between spicy and sweet!

We have Claire, a single mom who moved to the small town with her young daughter less than a year before our story begins. Claire had a tumultuous relationship with her ex husband and a seemingly messy divorce. Because of those things she moves away to try and get a fresh start and begins working part time at the local bar.

She’s working one afternoon when she receives a phone call from the daycare letting her know her daughter is sick and needs to be picked up. Claire is already scrambling to make arrangements to leave her job early, when a fire breaks out in the woman’s restroom!

🧑🏻‍🚒🚒Enter Jake Schmidt, local fireman

Jake arrives on the scene to find Claire has already single handedly put out the fire. Immediately impressed and intrigued by this feisty woman, he attempts to charm her. But Claire isn’t that easily won over 😏

The book mainly focuses on the week or so after the fire where Claire has been given a vacation from work and her daughter is staying with her dad. Claire decides to give Jake a shot, thinking it’ll be a sexy distraction for a few days, but Jake has other plans. Long term plans.

What happens when Jake refuses to be a casual hook up and instead wants to commit? When Claire is forced to heal from her divorce and let her guard down again? When real life comes rushing back in the form of her young daughter and toxic ex? Pick up a copy of Falling For Red to find out for yourself!

Thank you to Serena Pier and Grey’s Promotions for providing me an ARC of this book! These are my honest opinions on the book

*Note- while having read the previous 4 books in the series would help you have a better grasp of the town itself and give more insight into some of the side characters, I don’t believe it’s necessary. You can go into this novella blind and still have a really great time and fall in love with the main characters.

Tropes Include:
❤️ single mom
❤️ small town
❤️ he falls first and harder
❤️ holiday romance (4th of July)
❤️ firefighter MMC
❤️ former military MMC
❤️ pleasure dom
❤️ later(ish) in life- 30’s

Some of my favorite (spoiler free) quotes:

🥰“You might only get to see me one night a week at most.”
“Better than not seeing you at all.”
She narrows her eyes at me. “You’re all in on this?”
“I’m all in,” I say, shrugging because I don’t know how to be any other way.

🥹I’m falling for Red. Jake the firefighter. Captain America. The guy who kisses me like I’ve never been kissed. Who wants to explore my body for hours without needing to take more. Who holds me like he doesn’t want to let go.

😏“Keep looking at me while I give you something to blush about.”

Book five in Serena Pier’s series brings readers back to the familiar charm of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin—just a short drive from where I live! I really enjoyed seeing this setting come to life on the page, especially with all the little local touches. Serena does a great job including regional lingo like “FIBs” and “Cheesehead”—terms I had to learn myself after moving to the Chicagoland area! It gave the story a fun, authentic Midwestern vibe.

This novella centers on Claire, a single mom navigating life after a painful relationship, and Jake, a firefighter with a steady, supportive nature. They meet at High Five—the local bar that connects all the books in this series—and the slow burn between them feels thoughtful and earned. Claire’s caution, especially as a mom with a kid to protect, was handled with care and made her easy to root for.

One of my favorite elements was how Jake consistently showed up for Claire, not just romantically, but practically—making sure she had time to pursue what she wanted to do. As a mother, I know how rare and meaningful that kind of support can be. It’s not flashy, but it’s deeply romantic in its own way.

He wants nothing more than to be her safe space and she is forever the pessimist with a dark past.

I love how he challenges her in the healthiest ways
It’s totally believable how closed off Claire is to dating given her past. My heart actually hurt for her.

I fell in love with the way Jake unashamedly gave her his all and never gave up hope.

Such a well written story with lots of spicy scenes and an incredible build up ❤️
