Romance, action, mystery, music, with a nod to the Phantom
Confession: between the title and the faceless musician, I downloaded this without reading the description, thinking it was PhanFic. It's not a retelling or continuation of The Phantom Of The Opera, but Nicholas's personality, some actions and life seems inspired by it.
Anna is a detective investigating a murder in Carnegie Hall with her partner, Mac. Nicholas is a gifted conductor, one of many possible suspects. There's an immediate, sexual connection between Anna and Nicholas that is equally hot and inappropriate given the circumstances under which they meet.
*possible spoilers*
As far as romance goes? Well done, though inta-lust turns to love. In interest of moving the plot along quickly with the action, I understand it. They can't keep their hands off of each other and prove it often,in steamy scenes.
As far as police procedure? I'm less impressed. Aside from the insanity of hooking up with an uncleared suspect while the case is still active, Anna makes other equally poor tactical decisions. She sacrifices self-protection for beauty while on the case, choosing a lovely gown and kitten heels in a situation with high potential for problems. She disarms herself for romance's sake when visiting Nicholas. And she discusses the case with Nicholas on far too personal of a level.
Action? Well done, suspenseful with many possible whodunnits, twists, and turns to get there.
And the music, ah the music. Nicholas and the other characters with music such a part of their soul are well written, the feel of the sound filling my mind while reading in a quiet room.
Overall very well written and I would look for more from this author.

I was not so sure about the music stuff. But the suspense is well driven and the love story is good enough, as so often with Nancy Herkness.

Profoundly beautiful.
There isn't one thing I didn't enjoy about reading this story. A superbly written story of love.
Fantastic characters and a riveting plot with twists and turns woven with mystery and intrigue.
This was my first Nancy Herkness book and it won't be my last. She is going on my most favorite list of authors.

A Murder Mystery with a twist ...
....
which enhances the story. As far as I know this is a stand-alone story.
Detective Lieutenant Anna Salazar is called to a murder scene at Carnegie Hall. One of the youngest detectives in the NYPD, she has certainly made a name with some of her fellow offices. Her partner Mac, is already on the scene.
Alexi Savenkov, musician, was shot. 2 people are witnesses and potential suspects. Anna was shocked by her reaction to Nicholas Vranos he had the most stunning eyes she had ever seen. Feeling unlike herself she conducts the interview. Nicholas found the body, his sadness was in his expressions but Anna couldn't rule him out without proof to the contrary.
After the interview Nicholas expressed his want to find the killer but was warned of off the case being a person of interest.
The next witness Mac interviewed. Jessica Strauss was auditioning and saw a man dressed as an electrician. She was a ball of tears and got very clingy with Mac.
During the investigation they get caught up in several side issues relating to the case.
The ending is very exciting and rounds off the story perfectly.
The characters are fantastic and it has a melting pot of differing backgrounds and nationalities that make the story very colourful, just like the setting of New York. The story flows extremely well. I couldn't put it down. The characters are engaging enough for me to be enthusiastic about their story. The story is well thought out and the attention to detail is certainly there. I found it a wonderful book to read.

EXCELLENT STORY!😁
This book was excellent! It has everything you could want in a romantic suspense. A good mystery and lots of clever twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end. A very satisfying conclusion and a very nice wrapping things up epilogue which I always give a book an extra thumbs up for having!!! The romance was lovely. Sensual, sexy, sweet and heartwarming with very little angst which I also like in a book! The plot was unusual and very interesting..... I love music anyway but I actually pulled out an old CD of Beethoven and played some of it I was so intrigued by the descriptions in the book of his talent. The characters were lifelike and likeable.... I enjoyed the loyalty and friendship between Mac and Anna. I highly recommend this book it was a very enjoyable read!😇

Music of the Night is a song from The Phantom of the Opera. It's also the name of a romantic suspense novel by Nancy Herkness. This is a spicy romance. It begins when NYPD detective Anna Salazar and her partner Kevin McKenzie begin to investigate the murder of a French horn player. Alexi Savenkov was discovered dead by his best friend, world class conductor, Nicholas Vranos. Before his death Lexi had carried documents from Vienna to San Jose. Were these documents Beethoven's Tenth's Symphony? As Anna continues to investigate, she is drawn to Nicholas and the line between her professional and her personal life becomes blurred. I enjoyed this book and the Carnegie Hall setting. I like that the author included an epilogue.

Nicholas and Anna are thrown together when his best friend Alexi is murdered, and Anna is trying to figure out who’s behind it.
This leads to a mystery about a possible Tenth symphony by Beethoven, which would be priceless. As the pieces fit, Nicholas is in danger and Anna has to protect him. Falling for each other is a complication, but neither can help what’s happening between them.
Interesting story of the myth of the tenth symphony, and this mystery within a romance was fun. It wasn’t as good as Herkness’ other books, in my opinion, but was still very good. Love the characters and music theme.

Nancy Herkness never disappoints!
There are many romance stories out there to read and enjoy. I have read my share of them. However, Nancy's books are more than alive story. Her books have a substance that where you can actually learn something. This story has it.
I'm not a musician at all (I don't play an instrument or listen to classical music or have been to a concert) but I found I really enjoyed learning how intense life is in that field of study. Especially by the conductor.
I've enjoy many of Nancy's books and this is one I will read again and again.

3.5/5
This book read like a classic murder mystery movie or story. I'll give it that. But unfortunately, I think that worked against it in some ways. At times it felt like it was dragging on (either because of the writing style or the story itself), and it felt like it was leaning into quite a few of the clichés of detective/mystery stories. Not necessarily a bad thing but just something to expect.
Overall it was a good book and I may come back to it later on now that I know what happens but it took a while to feel like I liked reading it.

Music of the Night
Anna meets Nicholas at the murder of his best friend. The instant attraction between the two is great but can they overcome the odds they face and receive their HEA?

The intensity surprised me...
But I loved it! The egos are big, the venue (of music) is amazing, and the story had me from start to finish. So glad I found it in my e-library. Loved it!

Not as good as others
Not as good as others. Not sure if it was an earlier book in her career or not. I did want to know the ending so I read it till the end.

An excellently crafted mystery.

Loved it!
The only thing that bothered me about the book is that when she would move the storyline along there should have been an extra space between paragraphs. It creates a bit of confusion when I go from a conversation between Anne and Mac, to a conversation or situation that involves other people who aren't even around Anne a Mac. Other than that, I loved the book!

Another winner by Nancy! Loved the story that took the reader into the world of classical music. The conductor was handsome and sexy and the lady detective was beautiful and smart. The mystery completed a great novel.

Really enjoyed this book.
I have had this book downloaded for a while and had been looking at it even longer. I regret that I did not read it sooner. It has a very good story line with several twists and turns.

March 14, 2014I didn't like this as much as the other Herkness books I've read. Story was a bit too convoluted.
