The Rising Mist

Rate this book
The Rising Mist is the final book of the beloved Mist Trilogy. Readers of Behind the Mist and Mists of Darkness have been eagerly awaiting its release.

In Celestia, home of the Legion of the Unicorn, the power of love prevails over fear. Nick and Bethany, immortal humans, are unicorn riders. Along with other legion members, they and their unicorns, Lazari and Shema, rescue and protect animals in danger on Earth.

After many successful trips to Earth, Nick and Bethany must face a personal crisis. The evil unicorn, Hasbadana, has captured Nick's sisters. When they try to rescue the girls, they, too, are imprisoned in a swirling mist of darkness.

When Urijah, the Lord of Celestia, sacrifices himself to take their place, Nick is determined to find a way to free him. It will take the combined efforts of the Legion of the Unicorn and a partnership with the animals of the Underground Kingdom to execute the unconventional plan.

But will that be enough to succeed?

I am a graduate of Oregon State University. Upon graduation, I spent five years teaching at the middle school and high school levels. My writing, at that time, was limited to curriculum. That was not fun.

While raising my children, I coached their Odyssey of the Mind and Destination Imagination teams for seventeen years. I helped them write their own stories for the competitions. During this time, I also wrote two parent handbooks for the Salem, Oregon School district on sex education.

About fifteen years ago, I was able to combine my passion for horses with my love of writing. I researched and wrote two equestrian trail guide books for the Denver area. By “research” I mean that I spent every Friday riding my horse on a new trail, be it on the plains or in the mountains. It was a tough job, but someone had to do it! The result of that work was the publication of Riding Colorado-Day Trips from Denver with Your Horse, and Riding Colorado II. Both books continue to sell very well in the Denver to Colorado Springs area and have made my horse famous.

I was able to combine my love of horses with my love of fantasy in my first Trilogy. The Mist Trilogy, comprised of Behind the Mist, Mists of Darkness and the Rising Mist received a gold medal from the Mom's Choice Awards. My next fantasy, an allegory of the Revolutionary War, but with Trolls and Leprechauns, won first place in the Purple Dragonfly Awards for fantasy. I took a brief (2 year) break from writing fantasy to complete a contemporary, coming of age novel titled "In the Heart of a Mustang." This YA novel won first place in the Literary Classics Awards for Young Adult fiction and second place in the Nautilus Awards in the same category.

On October 1, 2016, I released the first book of my new fantasy series "The Stone of Mercy: Book 1 of the Centaur Chronicles."

I have now expanded my writing interests to include Historical Fiction: "PINTO! Based Upon the True Story of the Longest Horseback Ride in History," and "The Sand Pounder - Love and Drama on Horseback in WWII."
I have also had fun working with illustrators on five picture books: "PERCY - The Racehorse Who Didn't Like to Run," and "The Skullington Family Series."

I describe myself as a “Mozart” type of writer as opposed to a “Beethoven” writer. When I sit down to write, the words just flow and I don’t have to go back and do a lot of revisions.

The Rising Mist is the final installment of the mist trilogy. With great anticipation to read an advanced copy, I briefly recalled the past reads years prior from recollection. The first novel had brief illustrations as if you were in the geographical locations aforementioned and character development was a gradual building process but well-developed. The second novel was phenomenal, well-written, and upbeat pace with a shock factor as getting closer to the cliff-hanger ending. This may be my favorite one in the series. Lastly, the third novel connected to the California wildfire outbreak whereas the reader sees two different viewpoints in the first chapter from the bystander (Carlos) and the rescuers (Nick, Bethany, and unicorns). Therefore the pace had its highs, lows, mediums, and gradual building in the plot(s).

Yet M.J. Evans still delivers a life-changing lesson of salvation; willingness to lay down one’s life to save others. Once again, Evans gives breath-taking geographical and historical sites such as plains, islands, etc. as if you are there sight-seeing.

Moreover, there are a few interpersonal aspects we can learn from, sharing exhortation and encouraging underlining messages. What a glorious and expected ending with such glorious power that occurs with unified kingdoms with a unified purpose that showcased miracles being born, restoration, and healing in the land of Celestria.

I enjoyed M.J. Evans' earlier books in this series, so I expected to like this one and was not disappointed.

The book begins with Nick and Bethany, and their respective unicorns and other legion members, assisting horses (and other animals and humans) who are in need around the Earth. As expected by the teaser on the back cover, however, a new peril arrives when Hasbadana abducts Nick's sisters and takes them to his dark castle.

Nick and Bethany make the journey to get them back, only to be captured themselves, which was Hasbadana's plan all along. After Urijah sacrifices himself in return for their freedom, Nick determines to find a way to bring Urijah back.

The book carries the reader along from point to point, building in tension as the rescues become more and more difficult. The ending is very satisfying, and readers who already love Nick and Lazari and the other characters from the earlier books will enjoy this book as much or more than the earlier ones.
