Read this book for excellent exercises on how to set boundaries and great examples of what the different kind of boundaries look like. On its own I found it interesting but it won’t address what is going on within you and why you haven’t had the right boundaries already.

Pair it up with another book on why you need boundaries and it will complement your journey to healthier boundaries.

As a person, it is crucial to establish boundaries as an act of self-love. This book serves as a guide, providing encouragement and explanations while offering self-reflective activities to help you understand your needs. As someone who still struggles with porous boundaries, taking the first step towards establishing healthy boundaries is essential. The first step is learning what you want without allowing the subjective nature of what others expect you to enjoy/like/do to influence your true nature.

Establishing boundaries is essential, but knowing who the safe and unsafe people are is equally important when setting these boundaries. Safe people will understand and accept boundaries as a reflection of the need for safety and security for the person establishing them. They might respond with something like, "Thanks for letting me know for the future." However, unsafe people might take it personally and respond with something like, "Why are you doing this to me?" Unsafe people often have difficulty respecting boundaries and may try to dismiss the need for them based on their own beliefs of what is right and wrong. As you establish boundaries and become more aware of your comfort levels, unsafe people will naturally distance themselves from your life.

All self-reflective activities can be done without professional assistance. However, if you need extra support, talking to a therapist can provide a different perspective to help meet your needs.

When I became comfortable with myself and my desires, I faced a backlash from those around me, typically in the form of guilt trips. I began to say no to things that made me uncomfortable, such as having guests stay overnight at my house. I allowed people to stay in the past, but I could not relax in my safe space due to differing habits and personalities. So, I have established a boundary regarding people staying overnight at my house. I now offer to pay for them to stay at a nearby hotel, and if they choose not to take the offer, I respect their decision and boundary.

Boundaries are adjusted over time and are a form of self-care.

Something I look for is resources and reference sources on tics such as this. The author hold a good foundation for this topic and discusses it in a manner anyone can understand. I think this book is more for a gentle approach and for someone that is new to really embracing setting boundaries in the world outside of themselves.
I highly recommend this book for the right person. I will recommend this to by beginner yoga students who are struggling with this and not sure where to start or even identify that a boundary needs to be set.

Awesome reference source as well.

This is a serviceable and informative book on the different areas in one’s life when one may need to set boundaries, how to figure out what those might be, and how to care for yourself when coping with different scenarios. Overall, the structure of the book is chapters on specific types of boundaries one may set, whether they be boundaries on one’s time to create more work-life balance or to protect a relationship. Each chapter’s introduction is followed by a few different activities that the reader can complete. It was a bit of a slow read but some of the activities seemed useful enough for different purposes.

This is definitely a book that I will be reading again….next time with a pen and paper! I’d highly recommend reading this book in moments that you have the time to do the exercises in each chapter especially, if you know that you have work to do in setting boundaries. This book is well written, easy to understand, and the exercises are straight forward and strategically aligned. I can’t wait to read this one again!

There was a lot of repetitive ideas in here, but given I wasn't using this for its intended purpose - as a workbook - perhaps I would be finding this to be a positive feature.

I learned some ideas, and there were some good framings for how to reinforce one's own opinion in the face of criticism / gas lighting.

Echt mooie, praktische tips, maar daardoor ook wel een beetje droog. Misschien helpt het om het fysiek in je handen te hebben. Ik denk dat dit voor jongere mensen echt een heel belangrijk boek kan zijn.
