Ils commençaient juste au lever du soleil. Or, ici, en Floride, le soleil se levait presque d’un seul coup. Il n’y avait pas d’aube. Le ciel était tout de suite doré, l’air moite, vibrant du caquetage des oiseaux.

About the author

Georges Joseph Christian Simenon (1903 – 1989) was a Belgian writer. A prolific author who published nearly 500 novels and numerous short works, Simenon is best known as the creator of the fictional detective Jules Maigret.
Although he never resided in Belgium after 1922, he remained a Belgian citizen throughout his life.

Simenon was one of the most prolific writers of the twentieth century, capable of writing 60 to 80 pages per day. His oeuvre includes nearly 200 novels, over 150 novellas, several autobiographical works, numerous articles, and scores of pulp novels written under more than two dozen pseudonyms. Altogether, about 550 million copies of his works have been printed.

He is best known, however, for his 75 novels and 28 short stories featuring Commissaire Maigret. The first novel in the series, Pietr-le-Letton, appeared in 1931; the last one, Maigret et M. Charles, was published in 1972. The Maigret novels were translated into all major languages and several of them were turned into films and radio plays. Two television series (1960-63 and 1992-93) have been made in Great Britain.

During his "American" period, Simenon reached the height of his creative powers, and several novels of those years were inspired by the context in which they were written (Trois chambres à Manhattan (1946), Maigret à New York (1947), Maigret se fâche (1947)).

Simenon also wrote a large number of "psychological novels", such as La neige était sale (1948) or Le fils (1957), as well as several autobiographical works, in particular Je me souviens (1945), Pedigree (1948), Mémoires intimes (1981).

In 1966, Simenon was given the MWA's highest honor, the Grand Master Award.

In 2005 he was nominated for the title of De Grootste Belg (The Greatest Belgian). In the Flemish version he ended 77th place. In the Walloon version he ended 10th place.

Simenon si è magistralmente cimentato con l'ambientazione e gli stereotipi mafiosi del "Padrino" di Puzo: crudele e spiazzante, avvolge nella sua atmosfera opprimente, fin dalle prime pagine un senso di predestinazione lascia scorgere l'amaro finale.

Simenon si è destreggiato nello scrivere su molti argomenti, ed in questo caso si è messo alla prova scrivendo un romanzo di ambientazione mafiosa sulla scia di colleghi americani. L’argomento è ben noto, storie di gangsters , nati e cresciuti a Brooklyn, con un’infanzia trascorsa per i marciapiedi, una manovalanza svolta per “l’organizzazione”, partendo dai gradini più bassi fino a salire nella gerarchia. Gli stereotipi del caso ci sono tutti, ho visto proprio in questi giorni in tv per l’ennesima volta Il padrino e mentre leggevo ne rivedevo alcune scene. La famiglia Rico è una famiglia di origine siciliana, composta da una madre ed una nonna, rimaste a Brooklyn nel retro del negozio di alimentari che la madre gestiva con il marito, rimasto ucciso in una sparatoria di strada, e da tre figli, tutti assoldati nelle fila dell’organizzazione. Il maggiore, Eddie, detto Il Ragioniere, ha fatto strada, sempre rispettando le regole, senza mai discutere le decisioni superiori ed è diventato un piccolo boss di provincia, si è sposato, ha una bella casa a Miami, due figlie, una buona attività di copertura. In questo sfondo, tra Miami e Brooklyn, e con il romanzo che inizia quando lo status sociale dei Rico è ormai stabile all’interno dell’organizzazione, Simenon si concentra sulla figura di Eddie Rico, che viene messo di fronte a un dilemma che mai e poi mai avrebbe immaginato: la famiglia o l’organizzazione, l’amore fraterno o il rispetto delle regole. Anche questo è un topos che si ritrova nella letteratura del genere, ho pensato a Michael Corleone che fa uccidere il fratello Fredo che aveva tradito “la famiglia”; in questo caso non ci sono i medesimi presupposti, ma il dramma interiore di una scelta distruttiva ci sta tutto. Ci starebbe tutto, perché Eddie vive il suo travaglio, fino alle ore finali, quelle più drammatiche, in cui i giochi oramai sono fatti, in una specie di limbo, incapace di tirarsi indietro, di urlare un rifiuto che ha dentro il cuore ma che è soffocato da una vita di rispetto delle regole, da una abitudine a non alzare la testa e rimanere al proprio posto nella gerarchia, rispettando chi sta sopra di lui e facendosi rispettare da chi gli sta sotto.
Come ho scritto, nella storia ci sono tutti i topoi e gli stereotipi del genere, che non la rendono originale e rendono il romanzo interessante per chi ama l’argomento. E’ un romanzo che veleggia in un mare agitato sotto il pelo dell’acqua, apparentemente piatto in superficie, fino all’apice del finale, la parte più bella, in cui ancora una volta ci troviamo davanti un personaggio alla Simenon, un perdente che si dibatte nelle maglie del destino. Non è male, ma ho preferito altri Simenon.

Written during the period Simenon spent in America, though the backdrop and the pace of the novel are very different, many of the themes he touches on are familiar. In an interview for the Paris Review in 1955 he commented himself on how different this was to his other work, and how proud of it he was. Interestingly also, he says..

When I did a commercial novel I didn’t think about that novel except in the hours of writing it. But when I am doing a novel now I don’t see anybody, I don’t speak to anybody, I don’t take phone calls – I live just like a monk. All the day I am one of my characters, I feel what he feels.
.. most of my novels show what happens around one character. The other characters are always seen by him. So it is in this character’s skin I have to be. And it’s almost unbearable after five or six days. That is one of the reasons my novels are so short; after eleven days I can’t – it’s impossible. I have to – it’s physical. I am too tired.

A novel in just eleven days.. maximum..

Here, that person is Eddie Rico, a nasty piece of work, associated with the Mafia. He’s the eldest of three boys, born and raised in Brooklyn by their widowed mother who still lives in Brooklyn and runs a sweet shop. Years before, Eddie’s father was gunned down and killed by a bullet intended for Sid Kubik.

As the novel begins, Eddie, a former mob accountant, is in his late 30s, and a successful businessman living in Florida. His middle brother Gino is a hit man, and the youngest, Tony, is a getaway driver.
To fuel his ego, Eddie has a large house pretentiously called ‘Sea Breeze’ in the upmarket area of Santa Clara, and has done well in business, though there are signs that that is about to change.
His murky past of running a protection racket in New York is behind him, until he is contacted one day with the news that his younger brother, Tony, has disappeared, when required to give evidence in the investigation into the murder of a mafia boss. Soon after he gets the message, Gino turns up and tells him that Tony’s life is in danger.

Eddie Rico is a pathetic individual. He makes a virtue of always doing as he is told, and although his association with the mafia has been largely violence free, his standing is morally untenable. He convinces himself he has done well, with the house, and a wife and children, especially compared to his brothers, and he never imparts compromising information. But this leaves him isolated in an underworld which does nothing but use him.
Though it is very different to Simenon’s usual noirs, it deals with similar themes; guilt, divided loyalties, the odious depths of human behaviour, and the infallible ability to lie to oneself.

It was adapted to a successful film in 1957, though the book has (surprisingly) been out of print for many years. It is available for free on the Internet Archive (archive.org).

Simenon destilado, aunque escribir esto es casi un pleonasmo. El autor en una entrevista a Paris Review declaraba que esta novela no contenía ni una frase "literaria" ( las comillas son suyas). Simenon nos pregunta ¿seríamos capaces de cualquier cosa para mantener lo que nos ha costado conseguir? Tras su pipa y sus ojos curiosos él tiene clara la respuesta.Lamento que se nos cuente un sueño en mitad de la trama, suelo desconfiar de ese recurso que me parece "literario", de un literario "malo" ( las comillas son mías).

A pesar de ponerle tres estrellas la considero una buena novela. Quizá, eso sí, un pelín inferior a otras obras "duras" de Simenon.
Retrato de mafia y de dilema moral. Los dos últimos capítulos son muy buenos.

Eddie, Gino ve Tony İtalyan kökenli Amerikalı üç kardeş. Üçü de mafyanın içinde ama en büyükleri olan Eddie kardeşlerinden daha üst konumda. İşleri düzgün, tıkırında. Derken en küçükleri Tony bir kıza aşık olup mafyadan çıkıyor. Ancak son yaptığı işle ilgili polise konuşma ihtimali olduğu için patronları Eddie'den kardeşini bulup ülke dışına çıkmasını sağlamasını istiyorlar. Roman boyunca Eddie'nin kardeşini ararken yaşadıklarını izliyor, malum sonu içten içe bilmesinin onda yarattığı psikolojik yıkıma şahit oluyoruz. Simenon bu romanda yine döktürmüş. Çevirisi de çok güzel olduğundan elimden bırakamadan okudum ve çok sevdim. Simenon sanırım bu romanda ilk defa bir mafya hikayesi anlatmış. Son derece sade bir üslupla bize karakterin iç dünyasını birkaç fırça darbesiyle gösteriveriyor.

Il mio primo Simenon non Maigret. Divorato in poche ore. Nonostante non ci sia nulla di adrenalinico, ampio merito va riconosciuto alla straordinaria capacità di Simenon di descrivere tutto ciò che avviene prima un "certo" evento. Senza stare a spoilerare, ben presto si capisce che cosa succederà in questo romanzo, senza che fra l'altro questa "cosa" sia descritta. Ma, ripeto, l'attesa viene vissuta assieme al protagonista per l'abilità estrema di Simenon di rendere palpabili i silenzi, i dialoghi, i gesti.

A devastating book, a man who has abided by the mafia rules and is living very comfortably as a consequence must choose between loyalty to the organisation or betray his brother. The brother betrayed must choose between his own life and that of his new wife. An unusual book for Simenon written about crime in the US. Simenon’s own mother said when his brother died that the wrong son had died.

This is a dark, psychological study of a man and his brothers who are involved with the 'organization'. Eddie is a trusted servant who oversees the organization's work in Florida, however when his 2 brothers become hunted men, he finds himself caught up in a difficult situation.
Simenon is a wonderful writer who looks deep into the human psyche and often shows us sides of ourselves which other writers ignore.

Esta novelita del prolífico escritor belga en lengua francesa Georges Simenon (Lieja, 1903 - Lausana, 1989) se lee en un pis pas. Es breve (154 páginas); está estructurada en 8 capítulos que desarrollan linealmente una historia que transcurre en unos cuatro o cinco días; la acción es única; los personajes son pocos, bien delineados y con una complejidad psicológica marca de la casa; y está contada en tercera persona por un narrador que cede su protagonismo especialmente a Eddie, el mayor de los hermanos Rico que dan título a la narración.

Eddie vive desde hace quince años plácidamente en Santa Clara (Florida), una localidad situada en el golfo de Mexico. Allí junto a Alice, su mujer, está criando a tres niñas preciosas. Sólo la más pequeña, Babe, les preocupa como padres pues a los tres años de edad aún no habla. La placidez de su existencia queda perturbada por una carta que le llega de Julia, su madre en la que ésta le dice que lleva tiempo sin ver a Tony, el pequeño de sus tres hijos, de quien le han dicho que se ha casado sin decírselo. También le dice que el mediano, Gino, pasó a verla para decirle que se iba a California. Eddie nunca cuenta nada a Alice, ni siquiera cuando sus jefes Boston Phil y Sid Kubick lo citan en Miami para sonsacarle sobre su hermano Tony y encargarle que dé con él.

Los Rico son de origen siciliano y pertenecen a una de las familias mafiosas que viven a cuenta del juego de las máquinas tragaperras y de los garitos y casinos en los que se juega, se ven espectáculos subidos de tono y se practica la prostitución. Naturalmente todo esto con la connivencia de no pocos sheriffs y policías que hacen la vista gorda o que avisan de las redadas que periódicamente deben hacer para mantener una aparente imagen de orden y moralidad en la comunidad. Eddie controla su zona como nadie gracias a que siempre siempre ha seguido la 'regla', es decir, jamás ha mentido a sus jefes, ni se ha opuesto a sus designios. [...]

"I fratelli Rico" è un noir che fa parte dei romanzi duri di Georges Simenon. È un libro che parla di gangster e di malavita in superficie, ma che analizzandolo a fondo si possono individuare altri temi. Primo su tutti la solitudine. Informato del fatto che suo fratello Tony si è sposato e molto probabilmente ha intenzione di parlare dell'organizzazione alla polizia, Eddie Rico deve trovarlo per conto dei suoi capi. Inizia così la ricerca e per tutto il romanzo non facciamo che leggere degli spostamenti di Eddie. Nonostante incontri persone, sua madre, il suocero di Tony; e venga pedinato Eddie è un uomo solo. Ha una famiglia ignara del suo lavoro e non ha amici con cui confidarsi. A mano a mano che la narrazione procede la solitudine diventa un macigno che non aiuta a sopportare il destino ormai segnato.
Simenon non esalta la vita da gangsters, al contrario ci mostra la sua crudezza e la sua spietatezza. Non c'è lo spirito di gruppo come in "Quei bravi ragazzi" e nemmeno l'onnipotenza data dai soldi come in "Scarface", ma solo la tragicità di uomo che non aveva scelta... o forse sì. Cosa farei se fossi Eddie? Ribellione? Seguire le regole? Non curarsi del problema? Domande a cui non saprei proprio rispondere.
Questo è un libro privo di azione, in cui non viene applicata la regola del "show don't tell" perché banalmente non c'è niente da mostrare. Nonostante Eddie arrivi in vari luoghi degli Stati Uniti, la trama è statica. Simenon crea un'atmosfera ansiogena che ti tiene incollato alle pagine benché non stia succedendo niente. Ovviamente ti affezioni al protagonista e ti rimane l'amaro in bocca quando arrivi alla fine. Il finale è sì prevedibile, ma è comunque straziante tanto che mi ha commossa.

Los hermanos Rico del autor originario de Lieja, Bélgica, Georges Simenon, es una novela breve de apenas 168 páginas. En otra faceta más, el tema es la mafia italiana en Estados Unidos de Norteamérica; los hermanos Rico son Eddie, Gino y Tony, nacieron y crecieron en un barrio neoyorkino en donde desde siempre estuvieron en contacto con líderes del hampa. En un recuerdo de Eddie, aún tiene la imagen del asesinato de su padre quien era un inmigrante italiano de Sicilia. La actitud de su madre ganó buena reputación para ella y sus hijos en el vecindario ya que Sid Kubik, personaje importante en la adultez de Eddie, vivió gracias a un acto de la joven mujer entonces. En la actualidad, Eddie vive en Florida en un lugar de ensueño al lado de su esposa y sus hijas; se dedica a la venta de frutas y verduras, aunque su participación en la ‘organización’ sigue vigente. Un día recibe una carta de su madre y se entera del matrimonio de Tony con una joven Nora Malaks; la joven pareja desaparece y consecuentemente esto provoca malestar entre los miembros de la ‘organización’. Eddie viaja al lugar donde vive el padre de Nora, después va a Nueva York a visitar a su madre, y finalmente se dirige al supuesto lugar donde está su hermano guiado por las palabras de su madre acerca de los últimos hechos de Tony. El Centro está en California, en medio de campos de cultivo trabajados por inmigrantes principalmente mexicanos, está la residencia de los Felici quienes tienen bajo su amparo a Tony y Nora esperando su primer bebé. Simenon nos permite entrar en la mente de Eddie para enterarnos de los planes de la ‘organización’ y saber que su hermano no tendría oportunidad de huir. Como en otras novelas psicológicas, el suspenso se mantiene hasta la última página. Muy recomendable para todo tipo de lector especialmente los seguidores de Simenon.

Simenon di ambientazione americana. I fratelli Rico sono tre esponenti della mafia, di livello diverso e con diversa mentalità. L’ambiente su cui si staglia la vicenda è quindi quello dell’organizzazione, in cui Eddie, protagonista principale, si muove interagendo con figure di tutti i tipi, dalle quali cerca di cogliere segnali su quanto sta avvenendo. L’indagine psicologica su cui invece Simenon si concentra è il tema dell’autoinganno: un lungo sogno anticipa a Eddie quello che la sua parte conscia si ostina a negare ma il suo inconscio ha già perfettamente capito, cioè il suo vero ruolo nella storia.

Un roman à l’américaine, un vrai de vrai. Avec des très méchants et des moins méchants. Avec des règlements de compte, la famille, la loyauté, des vendus et des tueurs. Un roman qui, sans surprise, a été adapté au cinéma.

Picked this up in a holiday house - a pleasant find. It is a very intense book, well written (of course, it's Simenon), but very bleak. It is about the failure of a brother to be a good man. I found it sad and haunting. The main protagonist hasn't got much of a life, doesn't even really love his family, sheds a tear over getting into the golf club and then sacrifices his brother so he can continue in his secure and sad little life. Really rather good.

Tre stelle e mezza.
Premetto che ho un debole per Simenon, che ritengo uno scrittore immenso. Sarà stato l’imprinting del Maigret in bianco e nero interpretato da Gino Cervi, fatto sta che per lui nutro un’ammirazione sconfinata e ho letto praticamente tutto quello che è stato pubblicato in questi anni da Adelphi, “Memorie intime” a parte (mi interessano le opere degli autori, non le loro vite).
Con questo non voglio dire che tutta la sua produzione sia ugualmente riuscita o memorabile. Eppure il suo enorme talento narrativo riesce a rendere godibili anche i romanzi meno azzeccati. E anche se ritengo che il meglio di sé lo dia quando ambienta le sue storie nella provincia francese, sono sempre incuriosito dalle storie più “esotiche”, che a mio avviso rappresentano per Simenon dei veri e propri esercizi di stile con cui vuole dimostrarci la sua capacità di raccontare qualunque storia.
È questo il caso de “I fratelli Rico”, scritto e ambientato in America, e che racconta la storia di tre fratelli, cresciuti nelle strade di Brooklyn e arruolati dall’“organizzazione” con ruoli diversi in base ai diversi talenti. Così Tony, il minore, viene utilizzato come autista, Gino fa il killer mentre il più grande, Eddie, diventa un piccolo boss in Florida. Quando Tony si rende colpevole di uno “sgarro”, Eddie viene incaricato dai boss di trovarlo per sistemare le cose.
Anche quando parla di America, lo sguardo di Simenon è quello di sempre, morbido, fluido, senza strappi. Più che alla costruzione di una trama “spettacolare” o alla ricerca del colpo ad effetto, la narrazione si concentra sulla descrizione di atmosfere e stati d’animo, spesso in un gioco di specchi fra questi e quelle, con una tensione crescente che avvolge il lettore in una spirale di ineluttabile fatalità, fino all’epilogo che, pur non lasciando dubbi, non viene descritto o mostrato, quanto piuttosto suggerito, evocato.
Insomma un buon libro, nel più puro stile Simenon.

"The Brothers Rico" showcases the versaility of Georges Simenon, a Belgian author writing in French about an Italian-American Mafia member living in Florida -- and it is completely convincing. Simenon lived in America for some years (this was written in Connecticut in 1952), and he must have soaked up details of the culture like a sponge. Here we have three brothers, Eddie, Tony, and Gino, who have assumed various positions in the mob. Eddie is perhaps the most discreet, managing minor operations on the west coast of Florida, while Gino functions as a designated killer with Tony as his frequent driver. Unfortunately for Tony, he is considering squealing about a major rub-out in a manner that could cause havoc in "the organization," and Eddie, as the loyal lieutenant, is commissioned to find Tony wherever he has sought refuge so that Tony can be handled appropriately. Eddie, a once-confident man with a loyal wife and a beautiful home, finds his sangfroid disintegrating the closer he gets to Tony and realizes that his supposed distancing of himself from mob operations is a mere sham.

Simenon cannily builds a taut tale of divided loyalties and the inability to escape one's fate. By the end of the book, the tension is almost unbearable, and Eddie finds that he has built his life on a skein of lies he tells himself about the sunniness of his existence. This is another Simenon "roman dur" (hard novel) that has been out of print for many years, and I can only hope that American publishers will rediscover what a gem it is.

As an aside, I was completely fascinated by the notion of what air travel was like in the early 1950s. Eddie has to travel from New York to El Centro, California, and it involves a dizzying number of stops: Washington, Nashville, Tulsa, Tucson, Phoenix, Yuma, and finally El Centro. No wonder trains were the preferred mode of travel then.

My first Simenon and it won't be the last one.
A gripping and tragical story about a mobster having to choose between his loyalty to his bosses and his family. Let's take into account he is an Italian gangster, so family is, at least subsconsciously, very important. So the story has a captivating frame, one with personal conflicts and moral decisions which is unfortunately absent in too many noir novels. I say this because of my conviction that this genre has as its central role the depiction of the dark side of society and of its repercussion on the individual.
Good things don't stop there. Simenon makes show of a crystal-clear, smooth prose. And there are some passages which are really mesmerizing. I'm thinking especially about the travel with transfers from one side of the USA to the other; we're talking about hours of planes and airports, but the same mental state is in the main character's head: the aforementioned conflict and his concern about whether someone is following him.
I didn't rate this book with 5 stars because I expected something more explosive at the end, but the aftertaste may change this in some weeks and it could result in increasing its grade.

Georges Simenon, a Belgian writing in French, writes about an Italian American mobster living in Florida, How international can you get? This brief noir has a pervasive sense of paranoia and doom; it is one of Simenon's roman durs. If noir shows a person trapped by forces he cannot control but which have been put in motion by his own actions, this is the noirest novella ever written. As Eddie Rico travels from Florida to Pennsylvania to Brooklyn to Sunny California, in search of his missing younger brother, he never deviates from his code of loyalty. Loyalty is a good thing, depending on to what and to whom one is loyal. Eddie's alienation, similar to Sartre's sense of nausea, and his detachment bring about his own undoing. Is that noir or grand tragedy?

This was great! Seeking it out after watching the film, I wasn’t sure how it would read but it’s incredibly well done.

Complex characters, suspenseful plots and realistic relationships.

A great, gripping read for the trip to work on public transport or for a long weekend afternoon
