Some rules are made to be broken; others will just get you killed.
Born a witch, I went into forensics so that I could use my talents to close cases. This worked great in the morgue, but I’ve just been transferred to active duty at the 9th Precinct, and doing magic in front of normals is strictly forbidden.
It’s the sort of thing the Arcane Council will kill you for.
Unfortunately, bodies are turning up fast, and with each passing day, I have to face the deadly truth. There is a serial killer working the streets of New York, and I don’t think he’s human.
What’s more, I can’t escape the fact that the victims have more in common with me, than they do each other. A fact my partner, Detective Bishop, hasn’t missed either.
With the killer closing in fast, I’m going to need every shred of my magic just to stay alive. The problem is, if Bishop catches me, I’m as good as dead.
Fans of Patricia Briggs, Kim Harrison, and Ilona Andrews will enjoy curling up with this binge-worthy series. Discover Kasey Chase, a daring and sassy witch whom you will adore.

A fun new intriguing series that I can’t wait to read more of! I really enjoyed the mystery and suspense throughout the story. The characters were fun to read and I can’t wait to discover more about them and about this urban fantasy world!
WOW!!! What a great series so far. Action, death, visions and more to keep readers entertained and along for the ride. Very hard to put down until the last page.
Binge read to your heart’s content! I’ve read each of these three books and loved each one. Kasey proves to be a kick ass heroine who has a rare magical talent. Each book includes many twists and turns, and lots of action. Each book kept me glued to the story with hardly a chance to breathe. I loved the magical aspects and the intense ‘who dun it” mystery. Samuel Stokes has a vivid imagination and no end to his writing talent to keep the reader involved in the story. I could hardly wait for each book to be released. With this box set you won’t have to wait. You could binge read to your heart’s content. Well worth the recommendation.
This series is a a great urban fantasy series with plenty of action and quite a bit of violence. Revolving around Kasey a coroner investigating some strange happenings in the city she's sure is linked to visions she's been having most of her life. The names of the books reflect just how deadly they are and I loved every minute reading these.
It should be 3.5. A fun and entertaining story, with a couple slight bobbles. I'm going to continue the series, but I'm not obsessed with it. Apologize in advance for formatting, I'm on my phone.
Pros: -There is no romance to speak of, which is AWESOME. -Kasey is a likeable protagonist with clear goals, though her "flaws" don't really end up being flaws after all. -I think the world this is set in could be really interesting. -The story is fast paced and overall fun to read.
Cons: -I think the books would be more enjoyable if there were more world and character building-- most of what we've seen is fairly surface level and relies on the reader's previous knowledge to fill in any vagueness or holes. -There are a lot of typos in book 2 in particular, enough to throw me off. -Some repetitive phrasing used too often and by all characters robbed them of a unique voice and got a bit annoying, mostly "After all." -The procedural crime solving story lines are a bit too simplified and CSI-like to me because (1) there's a lot of telling (characters explaining their decisions/though process to others that should have the knowledge or information to already know) and not quite enough showing, and (2) there's a whole lot of convenient, easy, sped up, and oversimplified processes, which makes it feel unrealistic to me. Book 1 did this better, but a development in book 2 really took out the tension and unrealistically put Kasey in the middle of everything and somehow made the entire legal system totally trusting and accepting and supportive of it? -The plot of book 3 in particular was haphazard and felt more like the author was struggling to figure out how to turn the plot outline into a fully fleshed out story.
I know that's more cons than pros, but I usually find it easier to decide what I want to read that way! Overall I'm enjoying the story and I'm going to continue reading.
I polished off the prequel in a day and have smashed out the first box set in under 2 days. This series reminds me of Rizzoli &Isles but with magic, more action and more twists and turns than a pretzel ever could hope to have. The world build in great and I love the fine line that Kasey treads in trying to save NY, while protecting those that are dearest to her. I cannot wait to see how this series progresses and I am desperate to find out who the Master is and if she will stop him and his evil plans. Book 1 sees Kasey being hunted by assassins with a paranormal bent, book 2 sees gods from Japan come to wreck havoc on NY and book 3 sees Bishop and Kasey trying to prevent a murder from happening while trying to figure out the Masters plan. Great writing and charter development is awesome.
Read the first 2 in this KU set but gave up partway into the 3rd. The crimes/villains escalated SO fast and I felt like there was some missing character development. Kasey just never really drew me in.
STRONG iZombie vibes - assistant medical examiner who gets visions from the corpses and is eventually caught/figured out by her British Indian medical examiner boss who turns out to be super into it? Ding ding ding.
Love Vida, dislike Bishop, honestly want more of the Ainsleys and official magics. The ADI and the Council seem like they have tons of potential for interesting world building. Instead we get Kasey
When a witch just wants to be a coroner nothing is going to get between her and the next dead body!
Unless it's the total destruction of New York City! That and other witches, warlocks, and werewolves, all threatening or trying to kill her! Meanwhile the bodies are piling up, her normal friends may die because of what they know, and she finds herself using more magic than she ever wanted to! Not the way she planned her career!
Loved the series. I have already read all 6 books in two box sets. This first box set sets up the background and characters for a huge over arching plot line that resolved itself in book 6. Each book leads up to figuring out what is going to happen and who is causing the mass destruction of NYC. Kasey, the heroine, and a witch, has seen visions of a large city self destructing since she was a young girl. Her visions as well as her work as a coroner for the NYPD leads her from one vision to another to the conclusion in book 6. But each book itself is a major battle or solving a murder mystery that is related to the final battle to come. Great series.
Entertaining and suspenseful, good characters and clever storytelling make this series highly recommendable. I'm moving on to the next set of books, can't wait to see how Kasey is gonna save the city of New York. Well done!
Alight fast pace read with a twist of magic and magical beings. The story's follow on from each other with Kasey, a witch who turned her back on her magical powers tries to stop a disaster from levelling New York
Did not live up to hype of the reviews. I was a fan of Quincy ME, Rissoli and Isles, and Murder She Wrote so I thought I would enjoy this - I wanted to murder the heroine myself! Only managed to read the first few chapters up to the second murder before I gave up. DNF...
This box set was like roller coaster--full of ups and downs. It was pure action, along with magic and a fair amount of violence. Thought the story was first rate and the characters were strong and likeable. Have already ordered the 2nd box set. Recommend reading.
The dialog was cliche-ridden. I labored through book 1 and gave up. Maybe, or probably not, get t0 books 2 and 3. A shame really because the story line was good.
I liked having the series in a set rather than having to wait until the series is finished. Summer's stint with the NYPD is very eventful keeping all on their toes, normal and magical alike.
DNF early in the audio book. I've already had to start over once and listen to Chapter 1 entirely to figure out if the detective was a man or a woman - I thought it was a man's voice at first, then later on the first name was a woman's so I needed to start over. I think I am having trouble with the narration. The narrator is clear, but is terrible at individual voices for characters. Throws me out of the story. Also, the writing is just okay.
I may go back to this someday, but crave better writing and narration right now. I found myself turning this audio book off yesterday and going to old favorites (Jodi Taylor, Martha Wells) to dip into quality audio book listening and kind of "cleanse the palate" from this book.
Book One: I really enjoyed this book. The dialog and the way the author has his character enneract is funny, entertaining, informative and very snarky. Like watching an old DragNet episode from the 50's this has book has a gumshoe novel quality to it which makes it such a fun read. The main character Kasey, a forensic pathologist, has a snarky attitude, a tough girl personality which works well with her boss, detective Bishop. She and her boss are out to catch a serial killer and stop him before he kills again. Only problem is she cant use magic and her boss and other co-workers don't know she has magical abilities. She has been warned by ADI, the council that oversees and monitors the use of magic around normal people, that they would take drastic measures against her and possible lock her away if she used it again. But they also hired her to find and terminate, if need be, the serial killer. What a bind!!! The concept is great and I love solving mysteries. It's a fast pace book and I was able to read it in a day. If you enjoy old style detective books, snarky women, a funny coroner and a straight laced Chief of Police, you'll love this urban mystery novel. Book two takes Kasey to the Met Gala, Wow how cool is that but as you can imagine things turn south. Kasey seems more mature in handling her situations, still snarky but not as much. Detective Bishop is not so central in the second book but Kasey's relationship with the Vida stands out a little more. I love how Vida reacts to Kasey's as he begins to know her on a deeper level. Haha. Book two is a wonderful followup to book one. A great urban fantasy read.
Samuel Stokes - Conjuring a Coroner Series Boxset Bk 1-3 - Reviewed 7/30/19 Kasey and Death meet, even though as usual she’s late!!!!
Kasey is one special medical examiner because she is a witch that has a special ability to see things that no one else does… either before or after and it’s called prescience. Now she is using it in her job and it’s helping her solve murders as they happen all around the Big Apple. In the past, it was something that she felt was a curse now she is full-on with it.
Bk 1 – Dying to Meet You – Bk 2 – Life Is for The Living – Bk 3 – When Death Knocks
What did I like? Kasey is the cutest wizard that I have ever found, and I love the trouble that she gets into. She loves hard and tries so hard to protect all that she loves without making it obvious. Now it’s down to brass tacks and she has nowhere to run….
What will you like? Exciting, thrilling, exhilarating, electrifying, sensational action that will take you by storm. Kasey will win your heart and so will SC Stokes and his work. The descriptions will take you right into the middle of the action with every electrifying word you read. Put the kids to bed early and get ready for an arousing read. I received this from the author as a member of the AR team in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion. All opinions expressed are my own and not edited by anyone but me.
Fast paced action adventure series! 1 - Wonderful fast paced magical, action, adventure, investigation story. Don’t let the fact that Kasey is a Coroner stop you from reading this book. That is only part of the story. There are so many other parts with great characters. Twist and turns to keep you on your toes. Descriptions are great without being too much. You are right there with Kasey. Looking forward to the series. Samuel Stokes updated this book. He made it more detailed and you jump right into the action. Great series.
2 - Magical secrets! Great continuation of the story from book 1. Kasey and her friends deal with more chaos in this magical adventure story. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
3 - Fast paced action adventure thriller. Can Kasey use her gift to save a life? Kasey, Bishop and Vida formed a crime busting unit, that uses Kasey's power to narrow down the clues. Looking forward to the rest of the series that is full of twists and turns.
Couldn’t put this down. He just keeps getting better and better. Kasey is a witch who is prescient; an unusual ability which is heightened by the presence of other witches and wizards. She was ostracized because of it at the Academy of Magic, and left without completing her studies. She moved to New York, changed her name, and tried to forget her heritage. Except for those pesky visions … especially the recurring one about New York City being destroyed. She’s forged a successful career in forensics and is seconded to the NYPD. But things she has visions of keep happening ... can she use her ability among 'normal humans', without tipping off the Council of Mages, to save New York? I received ARC copies of these books.
Start of a new series and it's a cracker. A unique blend of the magic world and today's world . Set in New York in fact NYPD and follows a young girl, Kasey, who is a witch but thinks she has left that world behind and starts a job as a medical examiner on loan to NYPD. My description can't do it justice but suffice to say the story grabbed me from page one as Kasey gets involved in a serial killer murder mystery that gets too close for comfort and has a glimpse of events to come. I had to read this in one sitting but then I had to sleep. If the rest of the forthcoming series is as good as this one I'll be a happy bunny. This was for book 1 but the next 2 are just as awesome
These books are a fun ride through the underworld of the magical community of New York City. We find our hero working for the police. Of course she happens to have magic and gets into all sorts of adventures trying to solve cases that just happen to cross over into the magical community. Fun read that keeps one up late trying to find out the next thing around the corner, sometimes literally. Good for young adults and clean as well.
Great way to start an awesome series! Kasey is trying to live her best life but magic and mayhem just won't stay away. S.C. Stokes keeps you hooked as you follow Kasey thru her struggles and shenanigans, you can help but love this sassy Coroner and her friends.
