For the love of the Norse!

This book on Norse mythology is captivating for those who enjoy tales of Vikings, gods and goddesses and tales from this culture. I have been interested in Norse mythology and Vikings for a very long time. So this book was obviously a must read for me. Although I knew a lot of these tales already, the authors insights into them did give new meanings and both of them together well. If you like Vikings, Thor, and old mythological tales, this is a book for you.

This author offers a thorough examination of Norse mythology, discussing the gods and their cosmology. The Vikings, their legends, and their customs are also described. I especially appreciated the user-friendly pronunciation guide to each unfamiliar name. The end of the book looks at Norse mythology in popular culture, including films and games. A book like this could easily be boring, but the writing style was very engaging--recommended to anyone with an interest in mythology.

Wonderful, detailed, and informative primer on Norse culture during the age of the Vikings. I truly enjoyed this book. It serves as a primer on Norse culture, giving glances into Norse mythology, daily life and culture, as well as jewelry, ships, and runes. It truly spans all the details of this culture during the time of the Vikings, and builds a thirst to know more. I absolutely wish the book had gone into more detail, but the book is a taste of Norse culture, and a taste that made me hungry for more. It achieves what it sets out to do. I do wish there had been another round of editing. Though not excessive, there are a few typos, extra commas, and sentence structure challenges. I also had to look up a detail (regarding the story of Thor and Alvis) that I thought should have been made clear in the story (maybe it’s common knowledge for others, but it wasn’t for me. Shrug). But it was interesting enough that I bothered to look it up, and that is a success as well.

This book was just so addicting from start to finish. I loved hearing the various origins behind Zeus, Loki and so many others! Nathanial Rhodes did an excellent job of going in depth into each of the figure heads, how they were influenced and in return how they influenced the Viking culture. If you are even the slightest bit interested in mythology, you will love this book!
