PRIMAL Inception is a prequel in the PRIMAL series. It reveals the back-story of former CIA paramilitary operatives Ice and Vance. It is approximately 130 pages long.
Kosovo, 1999. CIA operatives, Ice and Vance, are supporting a crack unit of Albanian rebels. War criminals by any standards, these brutal fighters are unlikely allies in a vicious ethnic conflict.
Two years on and the war has devastated Kosovo. NATO peacekeepers try to bring order to a region ruled by Albanian mafia, corrupt government officials, and apathetic UN bureaucrats.
Ice, scarred by genocide, is running a side project investigating war crimes. When Vance returns from a posting to Africa, they are faced with a stark choice. Abide by the façade of stability or, with the help of the SAS, fight a rogue battle against war criminals hungry for power.
I won’t lie, I’m just like every other guy on the planet. I love action movies, first person shooters, fast cars, technology, guns, cool kit and of course beautiful women. I grew up with Dirk Pitt, Jack Ryan, Jason Bourne, Doom, Wolfenstein, Commando Comics, James Bond, Rambo, The Predator and more. As a young man I have embraced Counter Strike, Half-life, The Bourne Series, Top Gear, Call of Duty the list goes on and on. Coupled with my military experience this seething mass of adrenalin-fueled testosterone has evolved into PRIMAL.
Another good PRIMAL thriller from Jack Silkstone. Each PRIMAL book that I have read (and I have read them all up to this point) have been well-written action thrillers. Four or five stars at least. I really liked Inception because Jack brought back one of my favorite PRIMAL characters, Ice. Okay, brought back isn't really right, since this is an origin story. We get to ICE early in his Special Op career. Reading the PRIMAL books reminds me a lot of the Strike Back series on Cinemax with tough special forces character, lots of guns, (but not all the sex that Strike Back has). If you like action stories, PRIMAL Inception and are good books to start with to set up the whole PRIMAL series.
Let me start by saying I usually don't read these type of books. I have read other books by Jack Silkstone and loved them so I thought I'd give this a try. So glad I did!
Primal Inception is a fantastic book. Bad ass Alpha heroes with hearts of gold and wicked humor. Oh yeah lots of cool weaponry. The heroes, Ice and Vance, need to take out a mafia boss as well as his organization. With no help from the CIA . That's o.k. because they have friends who are more than willing to participate. This book is action packed perfection!
I would recommend this book for everyone! Yes ladies you too! Jack Silkstone is a terrific author. His writing is very realistic, you can imagine the scene as you read. Parts of the book had me laughing so hard while other parts had me yelling OMG NO ( Ice gets ambushed scene) and Holy crap shoot him! Awesome book! 🙌 Starting the next book now can't wait to see what the heroes do next! 💪😎
This was the first book I've read by Jack Silkstone. It wasn't a traditional genre that I would read, but I did really enjoy this. The main characters are likeable in their beliefs, actions and morals, and the war-oriented storyline was written in a way that was easy to follow. As I read the words, the descriptive nature of the text provided imagery in my mind that resulted in the story being run through like an action movie. I enjoyed getting to know the practical and human sides of Ice and Vance, and am definitely inspired to read more by this author, particularly in this series.
I guess I learned a little of some of what went on during the war in Kosovo. This was another good read with interesting characters interacting. Silkstone is a writer that I appear to enjoy. He ties a good story together keeping the action coming and keeping the interest up. 5
A word to the wise - don't cross Ice - and with it, Silkstone hits another one out of the park. The twist at the end is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
This was a good precursor introduction to some of the characters in the Primal series. Interesting to read about their exploits. A bit brutal, as it happens during Eastern Block disolution times.
You people should just read this book yourselves and write your own review on this novel yourself and I really enjoyed reading this book very much so.Shelley MA
A prequel to the Primal series, Primal Inception by Jack Silkstone tells the story of how the partnership of CIA operatives Ice and Vance began. In Kosovo in 1999, the two operatives begin to question whether they’re fighting for the right side when their so-called allies, the Albanian rebels resort to mafia-like tactics that aim at enriching themselves rather than freeing their people. Scarred after witnessing an act of genocide, Ice decides to run his own investigation into the war crimes the Albanians are committing. After a short assignment in Africa, Vance returns to help his friend fight an unsanctioned battle against people their government and the UN support. Top flight action and suspense mark this story. It’ll get your pulse racing.
3.5 stars actually. Almost could give it 4, but not quite.
It has a few grammatical errors and typos. Nothing serious.
The first half was dull to me, took forever to get through it. While there was action, it only mildly caught my attention.
The second half of the book moved much better. Done in a night. Well done Mr. Silkstone (I assume that's an "agency" issued name).
If you are not into war/military books some of the lingo is going to throw you for a loop. I have just enough experience with Marines to follow along. But even I had to ignore certain weapon abbreviations and such. Meant for the hard core military types this way.
I would have never chosen to read this type of book had it not been free on Kindle. This was a very well paced book. It starts off with a situation were a fighter pilot has to be rescued. I felt like this first chapter was detached from the overall story. But, it gave the reader and opportunity to be introduced to the main character, Ice (James) and Vance. The plot was the main driver of this military thriller because something was always happening to Ice and Vance. The story end when Ice and Vance taking care of business by tying up loose end.
Like I said, this novel was so not my regular genre, but I really enjoyed it. I plan on purchasing Primal Origin in the near future.

This was the first book by Silkstone that I've read, but I will definitely read more of his work. The author has a very good working knowledge of CIA operations and knows how to build strong, believable characters. If you're looking for a book to reinvigorate your love for America and the American warrior, this is the story you need to read. Lots of well scripted action with an underlying plot that could have come right off Fox News. Silkstone has taken his background and experience and parlayed it into believable fiction. KUDOS!
Loved this book! It's a great read. I love how the author has links within the book to tell you about the different agencies & show you the guns, scopes, vehicles etc that the reader may not be familiar with. This is a good look into scenerios the "real good guys" may face while on duty that we really don't have a clue about. I'm glad to have joined Team Primal! I'm ready to forge ahead with these guys.
This is a high octane thriller with loads of action and compelling characters. A great starting place for readers new to the PRIMAL series. The writing keeps up the pace of the story without ever feeling like you are rushed, and the story itself is original and exciting. If you enjoy Tom Clancy, the PRIMAL series is definitely for you.
Could have been a good read if not for the language.
I chose this rating because of the profanity. There was So much ugly talk it was hard to enjoy the story. Some may/ do enjoy talking and reading books like this,, ,so I Will leave these books to them and I will go on to something else. I wish books like this could be cleaned up so we could enjoy the story underneath.
A fast pace story without a lot of wasted scenes. Keeps the characters vibrant without sidetracking the story, and it's refreshing to see characters truly care about people they don't know: the murder that spurs Ice to action is not something lost once the action heats up. if you're looking for romance or bizarre sex, this isn't your story; nothing but action and political/military drama.
I like Ice, even more than I liked Mirza - if that if possible. He is just and has a conscience and is the reason why we can sleep at night. This was more gritty and vengeful than PRIMAL Mirza, yet has the same honourable men who keep the bad guys at bay so we can live a relatively safe and ignorant existence. I cannot wait to start the next book.
Two CIA operatives go against the wishes of their superior and take matters into their own hands to neutralize a group of thugs hell-bent on stealing an election in order to put themselves in power. Good character development and pretty good editing.
Jack does it again. Swift, well written with an excellent twist plot, action filled, machine gun birrping, explosive, and fun loving heroes doing the PRIMAL thing. Each novel just getting better like well aged Irish Whiskey or a nice bottle of vino. Smooth and refreshing.
One of the best books I have read in recent days. Good detail, lots of action, good transition. This writer has the potential to equal Clancy. A must read if you like military fiction.
A paramilitary adventure but Alitalia to contrived on the emotional aspects. I still enjoyed the reading although some of the acronyms weren't up to snuff. The storyline was clear and straight forward.
New to the Primal series but enjoyable. It's a quick read so the action is readily available in most chapters. The story is predictable but nicely written. I would continue reading this series.
Really well written. I only wish it was novel length. I read through start to finish in on sitting. A really good story and excellence thriller. Ice is a great hero!
