This book was brilliant. Heartbreaking…but brilliant. I can’t recall a book that left such an impact on me and had me thinking about it for hours on end. The tale of two sisters and their journey through war and after…I am speechless. I adored Ada and Ingrid and both their voices. The author was gentle, yet the strength of this story is remarkable. I ate it up and cried at the end.

The Star Society is a historical spy thriller about sisterhood, old Hollywood glamour, secrets and betrayal.
Ada and Ingrid are two sisters that endured WWII and the German occupation. After the war they each go their separate ways. Once in the US, Ada becomes a Hollywood sensation and activist Ingrid is assigned to keep an eye on Ada and find out if she is a communist who has inflitrated Hollywood. The sisters are reunited but what will they do with their assignments?
The dual timelines bring to life the harsh and beautiful lives of these two sisters. The story is gripping, the loss is palpable and the writing is emotional. I enjoyed both characters and their voices come through clearly. I was captivated by this book and the whole atmosphere it brought.

December 25, 2025DNF’d at 57% due to increasing profanity. Especially taking the Lord’s name in vain. I was really enjoying the story. Not speaking nor listening to profanity is a personal conviction of mine. The narration was good.

This was a very intriguing read. A World War II story that I haven't read. With Jewish sympathizing twin sisters in Holland, and one of them flees before the war even starts and the other stays with their Nazi sympathizing Mother and her Nazi boyfriend.
Ada Worthington-Fox is the newest rising star in Hollywood with a very dark past. She comes directly from the Dutch Resistance to the Nazi's in World War II, but no one in America knows her dark past. Except her twin sister, who's been in the States for many years. When Ingrid comes to visit her sister's Hollywood house un-announced neither of them expected such an awkward or abrupt reunion.
Ingrid has been working as a glorified secretary, but sees an opportunity for advancement when her team at work puts their focus on her twin sister and her Hollywood clique. They suspect her and her party group of being communist, and they plan to send is several spies into their parties to gather evidence, then jail them all for their communist sympathies/actions.
But the connections between Ada's elusive Nazi and Ingrid's communist witch hunt might be stronger than they realize. Both sisters share the darkest secret of all, one that risks their very lives if ever exposed. As they come closer to identifying Ada's target and as Ingrid's investigation intensifies, they will need to decide what is more important: justice or safety, keeping silent or taking a stand, and, above all, if their loyalty to one another is worth risking the post-war lives they've fought to build.
This book was quite the juxtaposition between Hollywood and a war-torn Dutchland, but I found it intriguing none the less.

The story pulled me in right away, & I loved how it blended post-World War II history with Hollywood glamour & Cold War tension. The focus on sisterhood & reinvention added elements that kept me invested throughout. The audiobook format worked especially well for the dual perspectives, making it easy to stay engaged & connected to both storylines. This was a compelling, well-researched listen & a solid 4-star audiobook for me. I’m glad it was my first historical fiction of the year!

The story is told through the sister’s POVs and shifts between the 1940’s in Arnhem to 1946 in America. A sweeping, heart-crushing, yet beautiful story of survival, sisterly bonds, and loss.

I loved this book. The writing, characters, setting - everything was literally just perfect. A solid read. A fascinating exploration of the Red Scare and Hollywood.

Apparently this is the first I’ve read from this author, but I will be keeping my eyes open for more from her!
This was wonderful!
It was also… scary, sad, enlightening, empowering, cringe-worthy, beautiful, delicate, spectacular, bright and sweet!
So yes, it hit pretty much every emotion… and brought me to my knees on several occasions.
Aleida and Ingrid are twins in Holland. WWII is brewing. There is a lot of talk going on, but things are not terrible yet…
‘Yet’ being the key word here.
As things start to heat up, Ingrid is worried that her boyfriend is going to have to fight in the war… for the Germans… something he does not want to do.
Meanwhile, Aleida is concerned for her beloved Ballet Dance Instructor who is Jewish. She is worried that she will be in trouble as they start hearing about the Jews being rounded up.
And… their mother is of no use. She actually seems to be ‘entertaining’ one of the German leaders! 😮😳
So, Aleida covers for Ingrid as she attempts to flee Holland. And she stays behind with her mother… until the Nazi she is with actually hurts Aleida. And then she needs to escape too.
Fast forward to several years later, and Aleida is now Ada Worthington-Fox… an up and coming starlet in Hollywood!
She is trying desperately to make a BIG NAME for herself… and seems to be succeeding!
Until one day a letter shows up on her doorstep with her prior name. 😮
This one pulled me in and held on tight. Interesting to read how Hollywood A-listers were reacting to all that was going on with Hitler. And, how many of them were spurned in the news. Sometimes for innocent things. Other times for taking part in things they shouldn’t have been…
But wow! What an incredible ride! And what wonderful insight we gained from reading this! And, it’s mentioned that this is loosely based on Audrey Hepburn… who I love! So, a total win-win for me!!

This book was inspired by Audrey Hepburn, whom the author says was her favorite actress growing up. While the story is definitely not about her, some of Audrey's life experiences were used in the story. Twin sisters, Ada (the character inspired by Audrey) & Ingrid live in the Netherlands during WWII and the German Occupation. Ingrid flees to the United States during this time and Ada stays and aids the Dutch resistance. Years after the war and not having heard from each other, Ingrid is assigned to gather information on an up-and-coming Hollywood starlet as to her political views and whether she is part of the Communist party that has infiltrated Hollywood. Ingrid realizes that it is her very sister that she will be investigating. She is ecstatic to know that her sister is alive and can't wait for the reunion between the two sisters, all the while having to stay true to her assignment. While together, she learns of what Ada went through and the atrocities she faced in the hands of a Gestapo SS and police leader (whom their mother brought into their home). This brings in the element of the postwar Nazis who escaped punishment, some at the very hands of the American government giving them immunity for helping to combat communism or aiding in the Space Race. This story had a lot of interesting elements of that time period in history, and I found it to be very enjoyable and full of enlightening information.

World War II seems to be a recurring topic in my reading list right now. When I came across The Star Society I was delighted to see that this book also touched on life post WWII with a bonus that it was loosely based on Audrey Hepburn.
I enjoyed learning more about the Red Scare and life through the eyes of these characters.

I love a historical fiction story with a twist, and this features twin sisters separated during WWII. Now adults, Ada is a rising star in Hollywood, and Ida works as a private investigator for the Red Scare, now tha fear of communism is rapidly spreading.
I enjoyed both the audio and print formats, but combined it was a treat for my ears and eyes. The combined glitz and glamour of that time, paired with the historical facts pulled me into the story.

this novel is nothing short of captivating! from the plot to the characters, this novel is perfect for readers of historical fiction, romance, political spy thrillers, and family drama. there are so many themes woven within this book that kept me listening and i couldn’t get enough! Saskia Maarleveld is one of my favorite narrators and her narration beautifully captures the emotions and tension between Ada, her sister, and the various other characters within this book; she does a great job distinguishing between various ages and genders, thoughtful of accents and cadence appropriate for each scene.

i cannot recommend reading this enough when it’s released. if you can listen, the audiobook is amazing!

This was truly an unputdownable book - yet, it was so good I wanted to savor every page, so I forced myself to read it slowly. Simply, I didn’t want it to end.
When WWII breaks out in Europe and the Nazis raid The Netherlands, twins Ingrid and Aleida find themselves at a crossroads. Ingrid decides to risk it all to flee with her fiancée via the resistance and try to escape to America. Aleida, chooses to stay in Holland, Ingrid promises to write when she makes it safely, but a letter never came. Aleida lives under Nazi occupation secretly helping the Dutch Resistance- until her mother decides to start seeing a Nazi and he moves in - Aleida knows she must run. Fast forward to two years after the war, Aleida, now known as Hollywood’s most desired actress Ada Worthington-Fox, is making it big. Meanwhile, Ingrid has settled into her new life in America and works for the government in Washington DC - investigating Communist supporters. Her next assignment: Hollywood. Her target: Ada Worthington Fox - the sister she thought was dead.
There is so much more to this story then what I shared - so many twists and turns, and the book is so well-written and Ada and Ingrid’s story is told perfectly. The perfect mix of history, lies, betrayal, mystery, suspense, drama and excitement. 100% recommend this book to any historical fiction lover.

3/5 - I lovedddd the premise of this one, and after reading the author’s note I appreciated it much more! Loosely based on Audrey Hepburn’s life, combined with other 1940s big themes, this was a fascinating look into life during and after WWII in occupied Holland and the United States. Plus, the Hollywood component and post-war war on communism was so intriguing! I liked the main characters, but anticipated the twists and felt the pacing was a little slow. If you’re into historical fiction and old Hollywood I think you’ll love this!

Listening to The Star Society was my first experience with Gabriella Saab’s work, and I was immediately drawn in by how naturally she blends history, emotion, and character depth. Her atmospheric writing paired with the narrator’s beautiful, perfectly suited delivery made the opening chapters especially captivating.
Saab’s storytelling is immersive and emotionally layered, with rich historical detail and character-driven tension that feels both accessible and deeply affecting. Her writing is thoughtful and grounded in research without ever feeling heavy—she builds the world through both setting and emotion.
I loved the dual threads of sisterhood, secrecy, and post-war reinvention. Ada’s journey was especially compelling—a mix of glamour and danger as she seeks justice for her hometown while concealing the pieces of her past. She embodies resilience, identity-shifting, and the true costs of reinvention. The characters as a whole feel fully realized, carrying their trauma, hope, and complicated loyalties in ways that give the story real emotional pull. The Hollywood backdrop adds a glamorous yet shadowy tone that complemented the narrative well.
There were a few moments where the pacing slowed, particularly in sections heavy on background detail. I found myself wanting certain plot points to move forward a bit quicker, and a few transitions between Europe and America felt slightly abrupt.

But as questions and investigations hone in on Hollywood and its underground Communist allegiances amid the Red Scare, her sister Ingrid (whom she believed dead) shows up at her doorstep and brings back all that she escaped from.
Ingrid escaped the Nazi invasion of Arnhem years before the horror that Ada had to endure and has been working as a private investigator to smoke out communist influences in Hollywood, when she’s assigned her sister to investigate.
Thoughts: I really enjoyed this book and found it to be similar in writing style to Beatriz Williams and Kate Quinn and those that loved The Goddess Warsaw would love this book. Personally, I would have loved the past timeline to go further in depth and to hear more about what transpired after Ada was forced to give up her fellow resistance fighters as well as how she ended up in Hollywood. However, I still enjoyed this book and am intrigued enough to read more of Gabriella Saab’s backlist and future novels.
Audio: I did try to tandem read between ebook and audiobook (thank you to the publishers for both) and unfortunately, the formatting didn’t allow for the back and forth on formats so I stuck with the audio as I love Saskia’s narrating so much. The audiobook for this novel was phenomenal. But do you expect any different when Saskia Maarleveld is narrating? She is my absolute favourite narrator and lived up to all expectations. I requested this book entirely because of genre and Saskia. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Both women harbor secrets that must be revealed if they are to escape their past and truly live in the present, ultimately securing a future where they can each find success and the happiness they have longed for.

This cover grabbed my attention the minute I first laid eyes on it, and I still find myself wanting to just jump right into it like a chalk drawing in Mary Poppins. But this book is more than a pretty face; its pages contain a good story, too.
Set in Hollywood in the years following WWII (with some time hops to the war years), this story follows twin sisters Ada and Ingrid. They believe their lives to have gone in separate ways when Ingrid fled Holland, but fate conspires to bring them back together.
As Ada is now a Hollywood star and Ingrid an employee of the government, will their lives seamlessly wind together again? How will they cope with the secrets they’ve both had to tell to survive?
This novel winds through both WWII and the emerging Communist suspicions, and I found that to be a particularly interesting part of the story. I am eternally fascinated by the witch-hunt that targeted supposed Communists in Hollywood, and this was my favorite part of the story.
Finally, I both listened to and read this book, and I thought the narration was strong and enjoyable. There were a fair amount of characters and places to keep track of, so that could make the audio a little confusing at times.
Overall, I liked it, and would be interested in other historical fiction by this author!

Finally, I both listened to and read this book, and I thought the narration was strong and enjoyable. There were a fair amount of characters and places to keep track of, so that could make the audio a little confusing at times.
Overall, I liked it, and would be interested in other historical fiction by this author!

Ada Worthington-Fox, after her involvement with the Dutch resistance, managed to escape Arnhem. She's changed her identity and has become a rising star in Hollywood. Her twin sister, Ingrid, had left before the Nazi invasion, and Ada, having lost contact, presumed she had not survived. However, Ingrid has been residing in Washington D.C., where she works as a private investigator. She is assigned to investigate Ada due to suspicions of communist affiliations. Ingrid's mission has changed to ensure Ada's safety and clear her name of any accusations or threats. Meanwhile, Ada is pursuing her own mission: to locate the Gestapo agent responsible for the atrocities in her hometown and bring him to justice for his wartime offenses.
Inspired by the life of Audrey Hepburn, this was truly a fascinating story. It was told from the dual perspectives and timelines of Ada and Ingrid, in 1940 and 1946. It was an enlightening, emotional, and heartbreaking read that offered a glimpse into the Nazi-occupied Netherlands and the "Red Scare" in Hollywood. This book was intriguing and engaging, exploring the themes of sisterhood, mother/daughter relationships, love, betrayal, and revenge. I enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to historical fiction fans! The author's notes are a must-read!🩷

First off - I was so excited to get the news that I was picked to receive books from @booksparks Winter Reading Challenge 2026. The Star Society was the first book and it completely pulled me in. The story follows twin sisters, Ada and Ingrid, from WWII-era Europe to postwar Hollywood, blending resistance history, Cold War paranoia, and Old Hollywood glamour. It's also got spy thriller vibes weaved throughout which I enjoyed.
The story timelines shift between the 1940's up to current time 1948. Ada and Ingrid end up reuniting in Hollywood which complicates life fast - buried secrets revealed, past traumas relived, and dangerous assignments put real strain on their relationship.
I loved how distinct both sisters felt and how their voices came through so clearly. The dual timelines worked really well, and the atmosphere—from war-torn Europe to the pressure-filled Hollywood spotlight—was incredibly immersive.
I did read the author's notes in the end and learned this was loosely inspired by Audrey Hepburn so now I'll need to deep dive into her past. I must admit I do not know much of her history.
Read this one if you are looking for a story about survival, reinvention, and sisterhood during impossible times. A really strong historical read.

The Star Society by Gabriella Saab is the kind of historical fiction that immediately pulled me in with its blend of glamour, danger, and deeply personal stakes. Set in the aftermath of World War II, the story follows two sisters who survive the war in very different ways and are reunited in Hollywood just as the Red Scare begins tightening its grip. From the Dutch Resistance to movie premieres and whispered accusations, this novel leans hard into reinvention and the cost of survival.
What really worked for me was the dual thread of sisterhood and secrecy. Ada’s journey especially stood out. She is a woman who has carefully rebuilt herself into a Hollywood star while carrying the trauma of imprisonment and loss. Watching her balance fame with a private mission to bring a Nazi war criminal to justice added real tension and emotional depth. Ingrid, equally shaped by the war, brings a sharp political edge to the story, and their complicated loyalty to each other gives the book its heart.
The characters feel fully realized, each carrying fear, hope, and conflicting loyalties that make their choices feel heavy and earned. The Hollywood setting adds a glossy but uneasy atmosphere that works beautifully alongside the paranoia of the era. That said, this is a longer read, and there were moments where the pacing slowed, especially in sections heavy with background detail.
The Star Society is thoughtful, layered historical fiction that blends suspense with emotional storytelling.

@uplitreads has absolutely knocked it out of the park with their historical fiction picks over the last year. The Star Society is a powerful story, and a timely one. It’s loosely based on Audrey Hepburn’s life, which was what initially piqued my interest. But I wasn’t expecting all of the twists and turns that the story took. Saab takes us from Nazi-occupied Holland, to post-war Hollywood, and finally to a Washington D. C. entirely swept up in the Communist Red Scare.
As someone who has a degree in history, I was so pleased with how deeply Saab conducted research for this book. Her writing is gorgeous, and I highlighted so many passages. I loved the dual POV for sisters Ada and Ingrid and was equally invested in both of their stories.
The Star Society combines Old Hollywood glamor, the upheaval of the Red Scare, and resistance to tyranny. It’s a gorgeously written testament to the bonds of sisterhood that can be tested in the most awful ways but never, ever broken.
