This book is a feel good book. I haven't read a really funny book like this for ages, and it was really refreshing. The characters were wonderful, I fell in love with Flora straight away and as for Tom well even though he is the baddie I think all women would admire him but maybe from a distance. I must admit I couldn't put this book down as I knew with every page that something would make me laugh out loud. Fantastic easy read and Lynda has written it well, will be looking out for more of Lynda Renham's books.
This is a romcom that actually had me laughing out loud in a couple of places, always the sign of a well written book! It’s easy to read, the style carries you along and the characters are well drawn. Flora in particular is hilarious and her food quirks and language had me in stitches. Tom is delightful despite being the enemy and Flora’s friends and colleagues are people you wish you had around you when the going gets tough. There are no great surprises as far as plot but when you finish the book it is with a feeling of satisfaction that all is as it should be. I am saying no more except that I will be reading more of Lynda Renham from now on.
Cute, but why does the main female character have to be such an airhead? She gets annoyed at her mother for mixing up words, and the story persists with her mixing up substance/subsidence. She sounds very dumb. (Also, what's with the high maintenance ordering of food/drinks? At least, acknowledge taking from When Harry Met Sally!)
It is my first Lynda's book that I've read, although I have her "It Had to be You" on my kindle. Just couldn't find enough time to read all the great stories, it's a shame, really. I've heard that she writes brilliantly funny romcoms and I thought that it's absolutely something for me, and couldn't wait to start reading this one.
Flora (nothing to do with the margarine), or Flo, like her friends call her, is in relationship with Luke and hopes to be engaged to him before she's thirty. Unfortunately, there are no signs of Luke proposing voluntarily and Flo's birthday is only few days away. On the day Luke is also away, on a golf tournament in Dublin. Flo decides to surprise him there and propose to him. In the meantime she has some problems with her hair salon. A big entrepreneur and super - market chain - store has bought two shops next to Flo because they want to build there a new shop, and now they are insisting on Flo selling her salon to them. She's so proud of her own salon, she loves her job and she doesn't want to sell, but Rory isn't playing nicely on her and puts her under a lot of pressure. As Flo is very prone accident, her car bumps one day into other car. Owner of the big Audi asks her for a drink and Flo agrees. Even though she's with Luke who she wants get married to and have a lot of children! But she finds she's growing fond of the very handsome, very sexy, very funny Tom, and she even accepts his offer to go with him to Dublin on a train where he has a place free, and has a lot of fun with him and his friends when there is a small accident and a short break in the journey, and she really feels she can be in love with Tom, that is, until the very next day she sees in the newspaper that she, a small hairdresser, is now engaged to the CEO of the same Rory's who wants to buy her business!
Oh my. Believe me, there follow so many unexpected action, situations, there happens a lot with Flora, Luke, Tom. She finally decides that she doesn't love Luke and his health food madness, well, how long can you hide a Crunchie in a Tampax box, discovers she doesn't want to be Luke's doormat any longer. She has feelings for Tom, but well, she's also a proud girl and she's not going to give up her fight for the salon. Oh, no, she's going to organise protest and boycott the Rory's supermarket. You must read for yourself with what kind of resources she's trying to do this and how Tom repays her for this, and how she organises this protest and with what kind of people. You MUST :)
I must admit that, apart of sometimes being tired of Flora's naivety, I really liked her. She's not perfect but let's be honest, who needs a perfect heroine? It just makes her more real, more likeable. She stands for herself and fights for her ideas, for her salon, for her dream life, and for this high five to you, Flora. You can sometimes be an airhead but you're a great airhead:) Tom was lovely, oh my, how very lovely, handsome, sexy, a real Love God with a great sense of humour and a great sense of what is allowed and what's not in business, and even being a CEO of a big company hasn't changed him, he was not a type trampling over people. Yes please, Tom. The characters were brilliantly written, they were sharp and larger than life. I have really felt for them all. Flora, except of some of the minuses is a brilliant leading character, she's full of life and sunshine. Her working colleagues Sandy and Ryan are also great, colourful and vivid. I really have no idea why Flo stayed so long with this prick Luke, it was not a character that was made to be liked, oh no, he was antipathic, controlling, health - obsessed prick, and he totally deserved Flora treating him with the Bio - freeze, even if only by mistake.
The book started really promising. There were so many laugh out loud moments and so many hilarious situations, and the characters seemed to be really funny, but after a while it just stopped to be so funny. There were moments like for example forgetting the baby from the car, calling the baby Sadistic (I know! I know that it's just joking, but...!!!) or Flo's totally ridiculous mother, that I felt it's everything too much, it's too pushy, that the author tried too hard. Also, at first I have thought that Flora's dumbness is really funny but how often can you read about her mistaking the same word for another? Her naivety was becoming really painful. She was lovely, but there were moments that I have thought, how can you be such an airhead? And it really pains me to tell this but sometimes, instead of sounding sweet and charming, she just sounded dumb.
I have also some issues with some of the dialogues, I just had a feeling they sound so unrealistic, normally we don't talk like this and we don't behave like this - altogether, some things were just too overwhelming. There are no surprises as far as plot is concerned but nevertheless, the author made the lives of the characters not too easy and it was great to see how they're going through all the obstacles.
But I have for sure enjoyed the interaction between Flora and Tom. Even when they were full of booze :) There was chemistry and yes, the things that they did against each other were funny and relatively original. The author has also tried to add some seriousness and dramatic to the story, I mean the situation with Graham and the protest but well, what can I say? Yes, it was a nice try :)
Please, don't get me wrong, but if you are looking for a message or moral in this book, you won't find one. But. I don't have a problem with this at all, must there always be one? My answer is: BLOODY NO. It is a book written to entertain and entertain you only. It's light and heart - warming, yes, I admit, there were moments that I was tired with the humour and was aching for something more serious but altogether, it's a great read to keep you relaxed and for exercising belly muscles, because you're going to laugh so much. It has cheered me up and I really enjoyed it.
I thought books like this went out of fashion in the Noughties, along with Confessions of a Shopaholic.
Typical fluffy Chick Lit that missed the Women's Lib boat. Feminist avoid this!!!
"Heroine" is the cliché bimbo, ditzy girly girl materialistic (designer shoes and handbag obsessed) airhead, desperate to get married that she's dating a guy she appears to despise, and so unbelievably clueless that she makes Paris Hilton resemble Einstein.
Of course this AIRHEAD hairdresser (a change from a Wedding Planner I guess) then bags a tall, dark, handsome, super RICH Every-Woman-MUST-Want-Him tycoon.
It's such a cliché and it's full of verbal diarrhoea regarding her ditzy thought process
The first few paragraphs are an ode castigating her boyfriend of 2 years Luke, who is the cliché foil to make Tom (the cliché Hero) look good. Literally, it's just sentence after sentence of why Luke is so bad and Tom is so good.
Then there's all the contrived "funny" moments that me roll my eyes. Unrealistic to the extreme (I mean I read for escapism but this makes Fantasy fiction sound believable).
Flora and Luke have been together for over two years and while everyone around her is moving forward with their relationships theirs seems to be stuck. Flora tries to get Luke to propose, but all of her plans fail miserably. Luke isn't very nice to her and she can never do anything right, but she tries her very best for him. Flora has one wish, she wants to be engaged before she's 30. When her small car hits a big Audi the owner asks her to have a drink with him. His name is Tom and he's gorgeous. Even though she's with Luke, who surely is the love of her life, Flora likes him a lot. Until she finds out who he is. He's the owner of a large chain of supermarkets who are trying to make her sell her salon to them in a dirty way. She doesn't want to lose her business and great location and she's fighting them with everything she has. Unfortunately that also means she has to go up against the man she thought she could fall in love with.
Rory's Proposal is such a funny book. I had to laugh out loud because of Flora's delightful actions and personality. Tom is a perfect gentleman. He's handsome, kind and he adores Flora, but he's also smart and has a wicked sense of humor. I liked reading this novel so much and it cheered me up immensely. There's also sadness, because things don't turn out the way Flora wants, but she's tough and she fights for her ideals. That made her sympathetic and very likable. She isn't perfect, but her imperfections make her such a great woman. The story is well written and original. There's a spectacular scene near the end, which I thought was very clever. I loved how Lynda Renham gave Flora personality by putting her thoughts into words so well. I would recommend this novel to anyone who loves a funny and romantic read. It's great for a long, relaxing evening on the sofa and it's even better when you eat lots of marshmallows and chocolate while reading it.
Loved this book :) The pranks were awesome and had me smiling the entire time. The chemistry between Tom and Flo was dreamy. Tom was breathtaking, and Flo was so cute and funny. Really an amazing read. Would love to see this play out on the big screen. Would recommend this to all. It was also nice for a change to see a female MC who wasn't "perfect." She loved chocolate, hated working out and wasn't a model. Wish I could give more than five stars :)
if you like chick lit you must read lynda renham! I loved all of her books so I snapped this p the moment it came out and I was not disappointed. run, do not walk, to your nearest kindle...or nook...or bookstore...
Lynda didn't let me down. Another fabulously funny well written book by one of my favourite authors. This is a laugh out loud book that really gets the chuckle muscles working. I most certainly will recommended this book to friends x
What a wonderful laugh out loud book this was! Flo is a fab character and I felt all her highs and lows. Not going to get the plot away if you love Lynda Renhams previous books then this one will definitely not disappoint you!
Funny, cute and wow. I could not get into it at first, but I kept reading and then could not put it down. I really liked the story line, it kept a smile on my face. Thanks.
Loved this book so much! It actually made me lol! A bit predictable & a little frustrating, but I loved it all the same!! A had a book hangover when it was finished!
What happens when an outspoken hair salon owner learns her shop is to be bought out and replaced by the Rory's supermarket chain? Read this hilariously funny book and find out!
Some funny moments, the plot was ok. The main character, Flo, was irritating with some very annoying habits such as constantly thinking about sex, and saying everything as an innuendo, and repetitive, saying "don't think about it, don't think about it, but how can I not think about it" on pretty much every other page. It's also fairly homophobic, racist, sexist and ableist in places! I finished the book, and a couple of moments did make me laugh, which is the only reason I haven't given it 1 star, which I save for books I can't finish and truly hate.
I started this novel because I needed a break from really intense books. This was a fun book to read, although it was somewhat predictable. The characters were well developed- and I particularly enjoyed Rosalind and her nickname for the baby! I highly recommend this novel!
This story was well put together! An understandable beginning and some good follow through. Not listening and jumping to conclusions will cause unnecessary problems every time.
There are three central characters in this book Flora, hairdresser salon owner, her long term boyfriend of two years Luke Wright & the enemy Tom Rory, the evil money grabbing, business destroying rich man who happens to just be drop dead gorgeous, but still "The Enemy" The story centres around Flora Robson a hairdresser & salon owner who is 29 years old & has been with her boyfriend Luke for two years & keeps waiting for him to propose because she doesn't want to reach 30 & not be engaged but sadly Luke has no idea this is what she hopes for as he's so involved in being a successful lawyer, amateur golfer, vegetarian, health nut & he keeps trying to encourage Flora, Flo to her friends, to get fit but Flo has a sweet tooth but she tries.
It's one of those days when can anything else go wrong her best friend tells her that her boyfriend proposed last night, she's had a hard time at the gym & just wants to go home, sadly in her haste to reverse out of gym car park she fails to see the black Audi behind her & reverses into it. She gets out to apologise & locks eyes with Tom, tall, handsome & absolutely gorgeous poor Flo is so flustered she accuses Tom of hitting her car. Tom being the gentleman he is apologises & asks if she would like to go for a coffee to swap details.
With all the stress of the day she can't see anything wrong with going for a hot chocolate with him she needs a drink & Luke doesn't like her drinking hot chocolate as its not healthy. She has a nice drink with him & leaves with his email address. The next day a man from Rory's comes to see her about selling her salon, the shops either side of her have already agreed to sell to Rory's so they can build a new supermarket there but she tells him she's not selling the salon no matter what they offer her. Her daily life goes by, the problematic salon sink blocks again, more expense but she needs to call a plumber. When Luke reminds her that he's off to the golf tournament in Dublin at the weekend & he makes it clear he doesn't want her there she is upset as its her birthday over the weekend she realises that she's going to be 30 & not engaged. Things start to get more heated with company who want her salon, so she decides that she's going to go to Dublin & propose to Luke but along the way things don't go to plan & the planned purchase of her salon becomes a war between Flo & Tom & the laughs, cringes & miscommunication becomes hilarious. Highly recommended reading just make sure you're not reading it in public because I promise you that at parts you will get some strange looks from people around you. I will never be able to look at a tube of bio freeze again with a straight face :)
Lynda Renham is a comical genius and all of her books contain hilarity all the way through them. How she can create so many slapstick, comical moments from her imagination is beyond me.
Flora is not only a hairdresser, but the proud owner of her own hair salon, on a bustling London high street. When national supermarket chain, Rory’s, want to buy her salon, after acquiring the two adjacent properties, Flora is unwilling to sell, much to the disappointment of her controlling, health nut of a boyfriend Luke Wright, known as ‘Wright up his own a**e’ by everyone else.
Reeling from discovering that her friend Devon has gotten engaged before her, whilst Luke isn't even thinking about marriage, even though she wants to be engaged before her thirtieth birthday, she reverses out of her parking space and straight into an expensive Audi, driven by the gorgeous and wealthy blue-eyed Tom.
Tom takes Flora to a cafe near by to calm her down, and discuss the bump over a mug of tea. After they say their goodbyes they manage to keep on bumping in to each other, everywhere they go.
when Luke goes on a golfing tournament in Dublin, Flora decides that she is going to take matters with Luke in to her own hands and ask him to marry her, by following him to Dublin.
However Flora has problems at the train station and once again Tom, who is also travelling to Dublin, helps her out and offers her a seat in his private cabin.
On the journey they have a lot of laughs together and Flora realises that she is falling for him. However Flora soon discovers that Tom is the CEO of Rory’s Supermarkets and is now disgusted with herself for even liking him. With more determination than ever Flora decides to fight him all the way, including organising a protest, with unusual results.
"Rory’s proposal" had me laughing from the first page. There were so many one-liners and misunderstandings jumping off every page. I was absorbed into Floras life and was routing for her all the way, hoping that she would kick her so called boyfriend, Luke, to the curb as she is far too good for him.
The character’s were very believable and had warmth to them, and you felt like you were watching the story pan out rather than reading, with the help of the beautiful and vivid descriptions throughout.
I have never laughed so hard at a book before, and I have read Lynda’s other books. I was kept hooked all the way through and couldn't tear myself from the pages. I found myself doing the ‘just one more page’ routine more than once as I was gripped.
My only complaint is that I didn't want the book to end.
If chick lit with humour is what you are looking for, then Lynda’s books are the place to start.
This review was supposed to be up yesterday, I’m afraid, but there’s times when you get so into a book that instead of firing on to the finish line to see what happens, you simply want to savour it. THIS is one such book. I’ll get the cons out quickly so that I can move onto the gushing bit. There was (whispers) bad language in it, just an ickle bit, and a few slightly (whispers again) rude bits, but they were appropriately placed and so didn’t make me cringe or anything but if you don’t like that sort of thing (I’ve had emails reminding me to put this in my reviews) then you’ve been forewarned. As well as this, there were times when I was slightly editing in my head as I read. It wasn’t that it was badly edited, there was just slight repetition in places and I felt that some of the characters could have been toned down, just a little bit. This was only with the ‘baddy characters.’
Okay (rolls up sleeves). Now for the fun bit. I loved this book. I really, really loved it. There was something homely about it, I don’t mean the descriptive, there’s a fire lighting and cows in the meadow sort of thing, I mean in the ‘it could happen to anybody’ way (I’m sure I’ve said all this before and I apologise if I have!). The characters in general were brilliantly done and brought with them some great colour and comedy. The comedy was right up my street and the ‘battle’ was fantastic, with some great ‘smile out loud’ moments and times I became properly excited for what was to come. Flora was a brilliant character, no matter how bad things were for her she made you smile as she did with all around her. Tom was perfect, I couldn’t work him out and that’s what led to the mystery that made this a page turner for me. The romance was exquisite, Flora’s eating habits brilliant, her team for the fight and their meetings both hilariously done and perfect and the climax wonderful. All in all one I would definitely recommend for people to take a look at in particular for chick lit month. Highly recommended.
Having not read any of Lynda Renham’s previous books I went into her new one with an open mind. I must say that within a few chapters I had fallen in love with the lead character Flora Robson. Flora’s boyfriend Luke is frankly a bit of an idiot. As we get to know Flora you soon realise that any woman that has to stash her chocolate in a Tampax box, so the boyfriend doesn’t find out, seriously needs to look at her relationship. Flora has her own hair salon and she finds herself fighting against the big Supermarket who want to buy her shop and put her out of business.
With all of that going on she has no idea that what seems like an innocent prang in her car with the delectable Tom will make her life go from bad to worse. The wonderful thing about this book is without a doubt the characters. Not only is Flora (or Flo as she is more commonly called) a brilliant lead, she is surrounded by hilarious characters that just add to the story. Her work colleagues Sandy and Ryan add their flavour as well as Flo’s mum (who IMO was the funniest character out of all of them), and they make the story so much more engaging.
Now don’t get me wrong, there will no doubt people out there that will be looking for a moral to the story (there’s always one!), and I hate to say it…this doesn’t have one. Hurray! This is a good ol’ fashioned fun and light hearted wonderfully amusing book that will keep you entertained from start to finish. It has everything I want in this sort of book, funny characters, a good storyline, romance, tears and laughter. I mean what more can you ask for? I read this in one day and there are certain parts of the book that had me really laughing out loud (all I will say is that when you hear the Bio-freeze mentioned, you’ll know what I mean). This is the perfect book to take on holiday, read on your commute, or generally just put a smile on your face. Class act Lynda Renham, and I can’t wait to read the rest of your books now!
I have read many of Lynda Renham’s books; this is by far my favorite. I laughed so much throughout this entire book. I am not even sure who my favorite character is. Each one has their own quirks and style, making each so lovable and laughable.
Tom and Flora were amazing. Their chemistry is obvious and steamy. He was someone that I could almost dislike, but not quite. His sense of humor with the gifts he sent to Flora were so original and funny. Flora was interesting. Her quirks were way out there and that made her a great character. I loved that she wanted to be engaged by 30 and married in her 30th year. The fact that it kinda happen, but not quite, made me laugh. I do believe that everyone in the book will find their happy ever after, some just deserve it much more than others.
Rory’s Proposal is a book that I will definitely recommend. I cannot wait to get my hands on more of Lynda ‘s work.
I have liked Renham's other books; I was looking for an easy read and came across this as a "you've bought so we thought you might like" suggestion on Amazon, so I went ahead and purchased it. Unfortunately this was not as good a read as previous books by this author; the main character turned her entire life upside down because she wanted to be engaged by her 30th birthday. Seriously are women that shallow and driven by the desire to be a Mrs that they forget they are independent, intelligent and a wedding isn't the be-all and end-all, especially if it were to a premature ejaculating jerk like her solicitor partner Luke. All in all it was an okay read but not one I would recommend to people if they were after an enjoying afternoon of reading. I also have to admit that while I swear, the number of 'F-word' curses in this book numbered far higher than I have come to expect from chick-lit and that was a little disappointing.
I read three of Lynda Renhams book one after the other and figured out few things :
The Women have low paying Jobs or a failing Business. They are with Men who treat them like crap and are crappy in Bed!! They havnt had an orgasm in ages. They See the Hero of novel and have teenage like hormone levels. The Hero is 100 times better than the Boyfriend they are with. There is a lot of luxury life events curtsy of the Hero or some random incidents. There is a Third guy who also treats them as crap proving the Hero is Good! They will Marry the Hero who in the end will be the richest of them all! ( spoilers! )
But ( a big one) I still liked the books, they are fun easy reads. Because even if they are full of cliches and very similar to each other, they still have a different story line which is enjoyable. They have actual Laugh Out Loud moments. Plus some characters are very lovable.
Recommended for its Fun Story Line. A perfect lazy Sunday read.
I started reading this and straight away fell in love with Flora, i mean, who couldn't like Flora? And as for Tom... well as with most women i think we all swoon, no matter how much of the baddy he is. The story tells us of Tom and his company trying to shut down Flora's hairdressing shop. But a determind Flora does everything in her power to stop him.
This book is by far one of the funniest i have read in quite a while. I literally laughter out loud and when i wasn't laughing i was agreeing with it. There is so many fun characters and all of them so different but all loveable. I really don't want to say to much so i don't give anything away but some parts of this book had me near falling off my seat, especially with some of the language used.
I have read all of Lynda Renham's books (except the newest one Fudge Berries) but I must say, this is by far the best yet.
This one was written slightly different to the others with every other few chapters turning to the man's point of view. It's always good to get a feel from the man's point of view.
I liked Flora. She was a strong willed character, a lot stronger than Lynda's previous characters whilst still remaining a bit ditzy. I'm in love with Tom! Perfectly charming and such a sweetheart. There was other great and funny characters and there was always something going on, keeping me on the edge of my seat. I found myself giggling to this story!
Engrossing and entertaining, Rory's proposal is a funny story about an accident-prone hairdresser who falls in love with the man who should've been her enemy.
Flora is pretty funny, a bit of a worrier, and sometimes emotional - to the point where she'll declare war on a mega-corporation to save her salon.
The two have the hots for each other. It's obvious and predictable. But it was very interesting to see how they far they were both willing to go for the salon.
Tom's certainly swoon-worthy, but he's too kind and there was only ever one mention of why he had an initial "can't trust-must-not-fall-for-women" vibe.
