Bone Dresser

Chase Alspeth only wanted to create beautiful science. That’s why she joined the Research & Development team to begin with. Unfortunately, her narcissistic boss hands her a super shady project, and instead of the standard muscle making, she’s now crafting (very illegal) brainless, super-strong biological weapons shaped like normal humans.

While contending with the request to commit crimes against nature, she also has to deal with her rival colleague trying to steal her new job. Or at least, that’s what it seems at first. Now, she’s not so sure if they’re rivals or teammates--or maybe, something more.

Just when she’s at her limit, the supposedly inert shell of a body she’s working starts slowly (but definitely) gaining consciousness. Now, Chase’s priority is figuring out a way to get the body out of the lab, which is way outside her scope of practice. After all, it’s not like she can just steal it…right?

Maybe she’s been watching too many shows, because the next thing she knows, Chase is joining a heist crew--and her rival--hellbent on robbing the corrupt corporation. If Chase and her crew steal the bodies, they can save them from a future of pain and war. They might even be able to shut the whole operation down, once and for all--as long as they can escape the lab first.

Another book that holds such a special place in my heart, I'm SO excited for Bone Dresser to finally be out in the world! This is such a fun read with the very best found family, laugh-out-loud moments, loveable characters, unique and thorough world building, and bone chilling body horror. This is everything you want in a sci-fi heist thriller!

Bone Dressed by Nico Vincenty is an amazing book, and I could not recommend it enough! Chase finds herself with the perfect opportunity to join the R&D department of her company! She specializes in constructing muscles for new humans and replacement parts. But now she can test some of her theories! But of course, every corporation has its dark side. Will Chase sacrifice her ethics for the sake of progress?

The additional characters are a hoot, and I love them all! I wouldn't want to go into a dangerous situation with anyone else! I'm also not usually a big fan of body horror, and I can be rather squeamish. However, the way the medical procedures were described and how it was not unnecessarily grotesque made it a rather enjoyable part of the book for me! I loved diving into this futuristic world and seeing how everything worked :)

Bone Dresser is the perfect mix of sci-fi, heist, romance, and adventure to rocket it into a top read! You don't want to miss this one in your 2025 TBR. I think it's sage to say Nico Vincenty will be an auto buy either for me going forward. Both her books have hit the right spot in really unique ways! 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I highly recommend!

What it is about
Chase Alspeth wants to make beautiful science and gets the job offer of a lifetime. Her narcissistic boss hands her the new project, but she quickly realises how shady it really is – not just shady, but very illegal. She has to tell someone; this can’t go on; it is wrong...

What I liked
Oh, I loved the setting of Bone Dresser. Chase works in a lab where actual people are fabricated, since no one is actually born anymore.
The beginning was a bit slower, but not boring. It picked up speed from the middle and was like a whirlwind from there. I felt for Chase throughout the whole novel. I rooted for her, and I was so nervous from the midpoint on, like I was there. It was fun and deep at the same time.
And the ending had me open-mouthed, gaping at the page...

What I didn’t like as much
At times I wasn’t so sure about the layout and some of the technicalities of the lab Chase works in. Everything is super monitored, but sometimes Chase does things that should have been noticed at some point.
Chase is nearly blinded by her handheld so often; doesn't she know dark mode?
I’m being petty here, but I can’t stand characters dropping their food in books. Like, you just lost your breakfast, and you just keep going with your day? No, sorry.
I loved this book and how it dragged me through this heist. Some little things absolutely didn’t change that.

Final Words
This novel is fun, action-packed and deep. In the end it makes me wonder what it takes to be human if we were fabricated in a lab.
The ending and the twists were the best thing about it.
I loved it just as much as Vincenty’s last novel, and I can’t wait to see more.

This book achieves exactly what it promised it would. That being said the horror aspects didn't feel particularly dark or confronting though still gory, so if the horror aspect might be a deterrent I wouldn't worry too much. The story delivers on the tropes it promised however because their use its pretty clear where the story is going most of the time. It doesn't make it boring, just means I found it more of a casual read.

Also found it funny how detailed the anatomy knowledge was and how hand wavy the tech babble was. Oscar your coding skills were godly.

Overall a pretty enjoyable read. I especially reccomend if you enjoyed the authors first book because this one has even more characters to get attached to.

Sci-fi heist story with found family, rivals to ??? romance, banter, and attitude. The banter reminds me of Divine Rivals set in a sci-fi world where body parts can be crafted by scientists, with murderbot (but funny) body horror elements, and a fresh nod to Frankenstein. The FMC is a hilarious scientist seeking to topple a powerful corporation and reveal its dark secrets. Her heist group comes together, reminding me of the best ensemble bits of Ocean's 11. Vicenty has secured her place as a physical copy autobuy author, even if I manage to snag an ARC.

Yes. Even if it isn't sapphic. LOL
Vincenty knows how to craft a scene,
characters like Chase who we not only root for,
but feel rooted in.
