Eisa’s life is one of pain and cruelty. Living in servitude, she grapples daily with an illness for which there is no cure and abuse at the hands of the man who has owned her since she was a child.
When Arik, the silver-eyed second-in-command of the king’s dragon-bonded warriors, makes her a deal she can’t refuse, Eisa finds herself hurtling toward a destiny she never would have chosen.
Desperate to free her loved ones, Eisa agrees to travel to the desolate wasteland in the south, to bond a dragon to her soul, and to become one of the legendary Drage.
As long as the Chaos doesn’t kill her first.
Heart of Chaos is the first book In the Chaosborn trilogy, an adult romantasy filled with dragon shifters, Norse-inspired-lore, swoony banter, and spicy romance.
Madeleine Eliot loves to read and write spicy romantasy with all of the best tropes. Dubbed the “Queen of Cozy” by her readers, Madeleine enjoys writing romantasy that is all vibes and spice, with a dash of adventure and world-building. She is always working on her next book, which is probably another spicy romantasy. Follow her adventures and latest works at instagram.com/madeleineeliotwrites
This was one of those rare books that I fell in love with from the very first page. I couldn’t stop reading but I also didn’t want it to end.
Madeleine is a master of creating characters that are so easy to like. From sassy dragons, to chiseled Vikings, to a strong hearted yet soft heroine, and fun side characters, I was rooting for them all.
The plot was engaging, the magic system and lore were really interesting, and overall the vibes were just so fun. I can’t wait to see where this series goes!
Literally finished this book in less than a day. Such a fast paced book with a great storyline. I instantly fell in love with the characters (especially the dragons). I loved the plots for them and was rooting for each of them! There were some good twists I didn’t see coming and I’m excited to see how they play out in the series. I can’t wait for the release of book 2!
Genre: Adult Fantasy Romance Spice: 3/5 *spice ratings are relative to similar books in the same genre*
The Catalog: FM, dragon shifters, reluctant FMC, he falls first, fated mates (human & dragon alike), forced proximity, only one bed, chronic illness representation, found family, hurt/care, Norse lore, touch them and ☠️, monsters & Gods
My Blurb: Eisa has been indentured her entire life. Her only thought is survival and safety for her chosen family. Fate has other ideas when two Drage, warrior dragon shifters, crash into her life, claiming that she is Chaosborn and has the potential to bond a dragon as well. Arik’s dragon, Baldur, knows that Eisa is the human they’ve been waiting, even if she doesn’t understand yet. Now, Arik must do what he can so ensure Eisa’s survival so that she might have the chance to complete his dragon’s mate bond, and maybe his own heart too.
Thoughts: This book was simply consuming. I. Could. Not. Stop. Reading. I was literally hooked from page one and tore through the story at a speed that speaks for itself. I loved every second of this book. The world building is so breezy that it lets you melt into the story, and while it has Madeleine’s signature cozy feels, it’s also gritty with a dash of primal goodness.
The FMC, Eisa, has caged herself for so long in order to protect herself from the small men around her. Yet inside, she has a fierce spirit and loves with her whole soul. This book is very much a celebration of Eisa shattering her own cage, and I was cheering her on the whole time. Arik is a broody, blond, beefy dragon shifter that has lost a lot of hope when it comes to the battle between the Drage and the dark creatures plaguing the realm. Eisa reignites his flame. Their romance is equal parts adorable human bumbling and primal dragon desire. It. Was. Hawt.
Lastly, this review would not be complete without mentioning the absolute hilarity that is the dragons’ meddling thoughts. There is nothing better than reading a character getting psychically roasted by their bonded dragon, lmao.
Highly, highly recommend this book for fantasy romance readers & PNR readers alike!
This arc was incredible! This is by far my favorite dragon book!
The plot was epic, the characters were fantastic, and the magic and dragons were so unique! I loved the banter and the forced proximity for our MCs and their dragons! The added twist for bonded riders was so cool.
This felt very adult, How To Train Your Dragon which I loved! There is still so much to explore in the world aside from the dragons as well and magical mysteries to solve. I definitely can't wait to see where this series is going and how many books it will be!
I literally cannot find the words to describe how much I loved this book! I started it this morning and could not put it down.
✨Dragon Shifters ✨Fated Mates ✨Only One Bed ✨Chronic Illness Rep ✨Touch her & ☠️
Banter, tension, easy to understand world building, spicy scenes that are well worth the wait & a unique take on dragon shifters and fated mates. This book has everything you could want in a fantasy book.
Obsessed!!! I literally devoured this book. The characters were to die for. Even the minor 'side' characters left me wanting to know more! The relationship and chemistry between Arik and Eisa is just *chefs kiss*. The tension, the banter, the yearning - it was everything. Arik is the perfect blend of broody and protective.
This is a super fun, easy read. It is a fast-paced story that plays off a number of tropes, including fated mates, dragon shifters, he falls first, and a few more. It’s not overly complex in terms of world-building, which makes it a perfect “fun fantasy” when you’re not in the mood to take notes or track ten kingdoms.
I really enjoyed the norse/viking vibes to it, although I hope she explores this more in the series!
This is the first book of Madeleine's I've read, and well, now I'm adding all her works to my TBR. If you enjoyed Fourth Wing but wanted something a little less taxing, more lighthearted, this is for you!
After finishing a very early copy of this, I can safely say Heart of Chaos is one of Madeleines best books to date. I was captured from the very first page with an original story line and characters that grabbed my attention while pulling nothing less than my full investment in their story line. Even the side characters (here’s looking at you Sigrid and Branka)were full of such fun personalities that you couldn’t help but root for them to succeed—or die a fiery death of a thousand suns if you’re two certain men. Believe me, you’ll know when you read it.
Arik and Eisa’s slow burn romance is DELECTABLE. Madeleine has always been the queen of cozy, but her smut game is on lock. And it’s no surprise that the banter is top notch. Especially with the dragons. They steal the show honestly, which is hard to do when you have Arik as a star, but, I mentioned snarky dragons right?
Whether you’re feeding a fourth wing hangover, looking for your next Romantasy read, you’re into shifter romances, you need a smut-dopamine hit, or you need to straight up laugh, this book literally covers it all!
The way I absolutely DEVOURED this book. First I want to say I will always love ANYTHING Madeliene writes because she is amazing. But this book, this is too tier in her collection. First love the dragon shifting aspect! I think it’s super cool and unique - also I don’t know about y’all but mates are my favorite trope! - this book is so cool and so unique and the plot is just chefs kiss. I CANNOT wait for book 2 😭😭😭
If Fourth Wing and Six of Crows had a love child, it would definitely be this book.
Heart of Chaos is brimming with your favorite tropes: fated mates, who did this to you, underdogs fighting for their place, good vs. evil, and there is in fact only one bed, Greg.
But more than that there is a deep undercurrent of kindness and respect that are usually missing or overdone in most books. Most of the major characters are genuinely good people and while circumstances have forced them together, they take it in stride, support each other, and fight for each other. Situations are volatile and chaotic, but the characters are stalwart and compassionate. You can’t help but root for everyone to be their best selves.
And while I wait for book 2, I’ve totally got my eye on the author’s Whispering Sea Duet.
I received a complimentary ARC from the author, in exchange for an honest review. Thank you @madeleineeliotwrites for the opportunity to read ahead.
Would love to thank Madeleine for an ARC of this book!
I finished this in less than 24 hours. I loved the development of the relationship between Eisa and Arik. The storyline was familiar but still had me guessing at what would come next. Even the side characters had me wanting to know more about their stories. I can't believe I have to wait for the next book 😭😭
I have always loved Madeleine Eliot's books and Heart of Chaos the first book of a trilogy didn't disappoint. The way she can create such an immersive, captivating and rich fantasy world, with amazing world building, an engaging storyline and well developed characters is just perfect.
From the very first page I was hooked with such an original and unique story line and characters that instantly captured my attention and wouldn't let go, even the side characters had so much personality that I couldn't help but become invested in their story and want the best for them and their story. The world building in this first book is perfectly set up to continue growing throughout the series, it is immersive and clear with vivid descriptions that makes everything so easy to understand especially with the lore of this fantasy world.
I absolutely loved the way the dragons are introduced and found it such a unique twist to dragon Shifters. In this world they come from a rift which is just like a door to another dimension where their form is pure chaos energy and they need to bond with a person's soul so they can survive and live, sharing conscious thoughts with their bonded human in one body which they can shift between the forms. One of my favourite parts was the banter not only between our main couple Arik and Eisa but also from the snarky dragons!
The slow burn romance between Arik and Eisa was written so well, my heart hurts for Eisa and the life she has lived but to see their relationship slowly develop was so beautiful so when the spice came it was so worth the wait. Madeleine has always written such beautiful romances between her characters and this is one of my favourites. I can't wait to see how the story develops further, I will patiently be waiting for book two!
Thank you so much to the author for the opportunity to read and review this before publication. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
I started this book at noon, and was finished by 8:45 pm. I ate it up. Could not put it down. Thank you to the author for this copy to review. This one looks like it will be a permanent addition to my shelves.
The pacing is fast, literally I was sucked into this story tried to do life as I read it (aka navigating an airport and a massive sore throat), clearly the book won out as soon as my kids were in bed. I felt like the story progressed in a logical manner, which I always appreciate. This book felt like it tended toward romantic fantasy, heavy on the fantasy, which is a huge plus in my books. There were several things alluded to throughout this book that I look forward to learning more about as the series continues (no spoilers, go elsewhere for that).
We were given a world with a decent depth to it. We have a backstory of important events in this world, and the story is woven into those events. I felt as though I could really picture the tavern Eisa was picked up and the area she lived in next, and the area surrounding the rift. I am not sure of the world beyond that, but I was happy with the world building we were given. I wouldn't complain, though, if more depth was provided as the series continued. Especially as we are answering questions brought up in this book.
I really enjoyed the characters and variety of personalities that we were given. I loved the growth we saw in Eisa throughout this book and can not wait to see how she continues to grow and change. I did enjoy that she was still portrayed as such a strong character despite having a chronic condition. Arik was a solid mmc, he does a lot of things right but still has a depth that wants you to learn more about him. Branka I can't wait to have fleshed out even more since it kinda felt like we skimmed the surface with her character. Jorgan is the same, we were given a somewhat stereotypical character and we saw some change but I am excited to see more depth to his character. Revka and the dragons felt more fleshed out, but I am still in the same boat of looking forward to where we go with this crew.
The plot is so interesting. I am not going to summarize for fear of spoiling anything. I like the magic system, and am interested to know more about how it works. I feel like we were given a good glimpse of it though, I am not usually one to poke holes in magic systems. The dragons were unexpected, in I expected their own corporeal entity, this is what I get for not reading the synopsis before I started. I loved it, thought it was a great change from what we have seen in books lately. The entire plot felt like a refreshing change in the fantasy that I have read lately, and I genuinely cannot wait to see where this series goes. This was my first book by Madeleine and it will not be my last.
What a read! Absolutely addicting! Once picked up, so hard to put back down! Let’s just say, you’ll want to meet Arik! 🤭 “Fuck the mess, eyes on me” “I told you I would get on your knees for you, now open”
The world building was spot on, as someone who envisions images in my mind whilst I read, I felt like I was right there with them, standing in the cold snow.
The way Madeleine wrote female anger and rage, not to be some explosive emotion but a calm and pondering storm within, had me feeling enthralled! Absolutely YES!
The slow burn was seriously delicious, the characters respected each other and their boundaries, I was right there melting with Eisa.
I truly felt honoured to have red the ARC of this and I cannot wait for more of all these amazing characters!!

"He claimed my mouth like it was a drowning man’s final breath—like it was his only line to life in a sea of certain death. His tongue brushed mine, and I felt myself melt into the kiss for only a second." (Ch 15)
Beaten and bruised, Eisa was living a life of forced indentured servitude. She could not fight back, nor could she run away for fear that something might happen to those that she loved. Not to mention that she had an unknown illness. But the day the drage came to the tavern, like a disruptive wind, her life was forever changed. If she agreed to go with them, would she be trading one life of bondage for another? She made a choice since it would help save her loved ones. Come what may, as long as they were safe. But she didn't quite realize what she was accepting and all the danger that it entailed.
If I didn't have to adult and go to my day job, I would have sat and read through the entire book in one sitting! The mysterious blood disorder, the bonds with dragons and mates, the freaking DRAGONS and their chaos, the power, all the rolling tension, and slow slow burn! This story portrays a different kind of origin for dragons than traditionally written or heard about, but no less charged and beautifully enthralling. Full of entertaining and playful banter between the dragons and their bonded, as well.
"“I think maybe it was an accident.” “Men don’t accidentally kiss women, Eisa,” Branka snorted. “Did he somehow fall on your face and you caught him with your lips?”" (Ch 16)
As frail as Eisa was, she was definitely a badass! Did not want this one to end, and here we go... gotta wait until book 2 is born.
What more could a girl want? -norse lore; -dragon shifters; -fated mates; -commander hero; -slow-burn - 👌🏻 I hate when things happen too fast, makes me loose interest; -strong and compelling characters; -well crafted plot; Awesome!
I think this book lacked a lot of the depth I wanted so badly. The characters and the world did not feel fleshed out at all. I could not make myself care about the main characters or the ending of the book. I could see the found family trope starting to make it's way through the book, but ultimately also fell short. I did not feel the FMC and MMC had much of a relationship or any build up at all as well. This fell flat for me, maybe it is someone else's cup of tea though!
- Heart of Chaos is a dragon-shifter fantasy - which is a type of book I’ve never tried (my only experience with shifters being werewolves), and may now be something I try to read more as this was BRILLIANT!! I am so honoured to be on @madeleineeliotwrites’ street team for this one.
HOC has a strong fmc, who has undergone so much trauma, and will fight for the people she cares about - and the people she doesn’t. I am itching to read book two of this series (also, I LOVE that this has a number on the side), as this is a fantastic introduction to the Chaosborn series. With swoony romance, a MMC who absolutely fell first, and some seriously lovable side characters, there’s nothing I can think of that’s make this any better.
There’s even some spice, for those of you that love that
This book definitely captured my attention right away in the first few pages! it intrigued me throughout the read where I felt like I couldn't stop because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I loved the relationship between the mmc and the fmc their chemistry was written great. All the characters were so amazing! also I loved the dragons sooo much! I will definitely be continuing the series when the next one comes out in the future!
Heart of Chaos by Madeleine Eliot Book 1 of Chaosborn series Releases 5/1!
Thank you to Madeleine Eliot for entrusting me with an early copy!
Dual POV😍, dragon shifters(!!), talking mentally to dragons, found family, shared souls, touch her and 💀, one bed, eyes on me, hurt/care on both sides, chronic illness rep, terrifying rift monsters come from
Chronically starved and abused, Eisa spends her days trying to keep her head down and protect the two other indentured servants she calls family from their cruel master. Until one day an answer arrives. But will this answer prove to be just another form of slavery? She takes the chance to go with the mysterious dragon riders of they agree to also buy out her friends and secure them a safe place to live. As she learns more about what it means to be bound to a dragon and actually shift into one, not ride one, she also learns of the heavy expectations that are placed on her. How will she choose between two fates she does not want and how can she know who to trust?
This book had alllll the things that do it for me and I could NOT put it down! We've got sassy dragons talking in heads (my FAVE) and high stakes and all the feels. Arik didn't have much time to win Eisa over to see things his way but I loved seeing them work together and the strong bond they forged. And I adored the dragons! I CANNOT wait for the next book!
Absolutely devoured this book!! Madeleine is the queen of spicy romantasy and she started a whole new obsession with the first installment in this new series.
I love when fantasy books have dragons, and this book had plenty of dragon action and lore, plus they were dragon shifters! It was intriguing to read about how the Chaosborn drage interact with their bonded dragons, how intimate it is to share minds and bodies while somehow maintaining your own identity. Add in fated mates and it gets even more complex!
I was rooting for Eisa and Arik from the beginning. The slow burn was burning... which is my favorite! Eisa had a difficult upbringing and I applauded her holding fast to her desire of making her own choices and breaking away from men who only tried to control her. She was so strong in the face of mysterious chronic illness and being an indentured servant from birth. Arik was a respectful king the entire time and I loved his quiet pining for Eisa.
Very curious to see where the next book takes us!!! Can't wait!!
I absolutely loved Heart of Chaos! First and foremost, I deeply connected with Eisa, the main character, because of her chronic illness. As someone who also lives with some, her struggles and resilience felt incredibly relatable. Despite everything she’d been through, her strength and gradual ability to trust others, even with her painful past, made her journey so compelling. Watching her grow more confident and open up was one of my favorite parts of the book.
Arik was another standout for me. I’ll admit, I was unsure about him at first, but he won me over as a fantastic MMC who genuinely cared for his mate and his found family. Their slow-burn romance was beautifully developed (though their first spicy scene felt a bit abrupt—more on that later).
Now, let’s talk about the dragons—my absolute favorite part! I’ve never encountered dragons portrayed this way before, and it was amazing! Their unique forms and delightfully sassy personalities made every scene with them a joy.
This was such a well-written and unique read, but there were two small things that held me back from a full 5 stars. First, the initial spicy scene felt a little out of place and rushed. I’m not sure if this was because it’s the author’s first time writing spice or just an odd pacing choice. Second, I would’ve loved more detailed descriptions of all the fascinating monsters in this world.
Overall, I adored Heart of Chaos (hence the 4.5/5 stars!) and highly recommend it to anyone who loves dragons, shifters, and mate-bond romances. I can’t wait to read more from this world!
I was immediately hooked and just knew from the moment I started reading that I was going to love this book.
The story starts with our FMC Eisa who is thrown into a world she unsure she can survive and has to make a deal she can’t really refuse.
The pacing was brilliant and the storyline was amazing. Didn’t feel rushed and the characters relationships evolved naturally. The banter was just perfect!
If you’re a fan of ✨Dragon Shifters, ✨ Fated Mates, and ✨ Touch her and die vibes then this is a great book for you!
A surprising gem! Was honored to be given an ARC copy of this one and was immediately swept away by the plot and characters. I loved the progression between the main couple and loved that power dynamics were explored through the story. The world building was quite easy to grasp and the pacing was pretty good. There are no big plot twist but I enjoyed the buildup to certain events. Definitely will be checking out more work!
Madeleine Eliot has done it again! With every book, she just keeps getting better. Whether it’s a novella or a full series, she consistently delivers the best—gripping plots with unexpected twists, slow-burn romance, spice, and epic battles of good versus evil. And she’s done it once more with Heart of Chaos, the first book in the Chaosborn series.
This is an honest review after reading an ARC, and let me tell you—it has dragons, my friends! There are mysterious connections between the dragon world and the human world, a deep and fated bonding between humans and dragons, and, of course, the slow burn that builds into intense conflicts they must face together. And let’s not forget the touch-my-woman-and-you-die moments—those always fuel my love for dark, alpha, mafia-esque male leads who bring the heat. 😏
But what I love even more is when that overprotectiveness meets its match in strong, independent female characters who make the ultimate call. Eliot balances this dynamic perfectly, giving us heroines who hold their own.
Don’t worry—no frustrating cliffhangers here! While it’s clear there’s more to come in the series, the ending leaves you satisfied, not stranded. Also, a quick heads-up: there are plenty of Norwegian names, but Eliot includes a pronunciation guide to help out.
If you love fantasy with dragons, deep bonds, and an electrifying slow burn, Heart of Chaos is a must-read!
From the very first page, A Heart of Chaos wraps you in a warm hug of comfort and adventure. Madeleine Eliot, Queen of Cozy herself, crafts a world that feels lived-in and loved—with characters you can’t help but root for.
You’ll find yourself drawn to the wise, matronly figure, the endearing young boy navigating his path, and most of all, our fierce and quietly powerful FMC. Eisa and Arik? Perfection. Their chemistry simmers in the best way, their journey tender and intense, with just the right sprinkle of spice.
And when we say spice… that Eyes on Me moment? Whew. 🔥 Eliot delivers just enough to make your heart flutter and then leaves you craving more. The buildup, the tension, the release—chef’s kiss. It’s the kind of romantasy that doesn’t give you a headache with overwrought worldbuilding or drama. Instead, it gifts you a soft ache, a little bruise on your heart when it’s over—because you’re not ready to let go.
The sincerity in how the characters approach each other, the emotional vulnerability, the balance between plot and passion—it’s all there. Cozy yet captivating, gentle yet gripping, this book is everything we wanted and a little more than we expected.
Thank you to the Author for the ARC - it’s always a pleasure to read her books. She is the cozy romantasy queen. This book was a little less romantasy and more fantasy than I expected, but still good, I can’t wait for the next one in the series, I feel like this book is really gearing up for it.
Eisa is an orphan, indentured to a cruel man who owns the tavern where she serves. Sickly from a genetic illness in her blood, Eisa is used to being meek and quiet, unless it is in defence of those she loves. One day, two Drage (dragon shifters of sorts) appear in the tavern and her whole life changes. One of the drage, Arik, tells her she is special and is one that can bond with dragons (Chaosborn), more than that, she is rare. So for the freedom of those she loves, Eisa chooses to go back with the Drages to their home and undergo “the rifting”. Downside is - she needs to survive the rifting and all politics and schemes. Plus side - she can finally be powerful, and maybe there’s a little true fated mates kind of action.
Madeleine Eliot, in her latest romantasy series, has created a beautiful and intense allegory of what it can feel like to be a woman in a world not built for her. Eisa has a physical lifelong (invisible) illness and fierce inner strength (which becomes something even more). Watching her hold these truths of herself as she navigates circumstances beyond her control, growing into her true self, is such a joy.
Danger is near for both her and Arik, the Drage (a dragon shifter) who has come to change her destiny. I found myself fearing for their safety, celebrating their victories, and I am now eagerly anticipating book 2!
I had the joy of getting to read an early copy of Heart of Chaos by Madeleine Eliot. The lore of this series and the characters within feel full of life, with pages you can’t wait to turn to find out what happens next!

Wow, wow, wow… I’m pretty sure that’s all that needs to be said for this book is WOW!! Because this book was amazing! From start to finish, and I was on the edge of my seat and swooning every chapter. If you’re looking so a book with a plot that’s overflowing with twists and turns, more than one gasp worthy moment, a grumpy, protective MMC, a sassy FMC that loves her chosen family deeply, dragon shifters, found family, so much action, and a beautifully romantic slow burn romance with just the right amount of spice sprinkled on top than you will want to grab a copy of Heart of Chaos right away!!
Eisa has been handed a rough deck of cards since she was a child… forced to sign her life away into indentured servitude as a child to a man who has zero desire to ever let her go. That is until one day the Drage out on orders from the king stumble into the tavern where she “works.” Eisa has no plan to draw the eyes of the Drage towards her, she simply wants to work her debt off and maybe one day be free to live a life where she has choices, choices that matter. Except the Drage, or more specifically Arik see something in Eisa, something his dragon Baldur wants, and when they test Eisa’s blood and find she’s a chaos born… well she’s left with two choices that aren’t really choices at all, but may change Eisa’s life in more ways than one. What follows is an amazing adventure/romance that will have you gasping and at the edge of your seat trying to simultaneously flip pages as quickly as you can to see what’s going to happen next while also trying to slow down and savor this amazing story! One I highly recommend gets added to every Romantasy lovers TBR!
Madeleine has done what she does best - make me completely obsessed with a book! She simply has the magic touch. There almost aren’t words for how deeply I enjoyed this book. She truly is the best at bringing the cozy and unserious vibes in her fantasy books.
This was my very first non-werewolf shifter book and it did not disappoint. Madeleine has this ability to make everything make complete sense even when the character we’re reading the POV of us still learning the information. Her world building feels so incredibly organic and it’s truly magic. I’m always obsessed with a book with a map even though I look at the map at the beginning and then forget about it, but I never felt like I didn’t know where things were in this book. Was I just as lost as Eisa in the caves? Yes, but that’s cause she was lost and I am directionally challenged.
Idunn and Baldur are honestly the stars of the book and I would love for either of them to be my dragon. Every time Idunn spoke I was just nodding along completely agreeing with her. But that’s cause would be a lot of paperwork.
The story is very easy to follow and so incredibly addicting. I don’t know much about Norse mythology but I thought it was incorporated absolutely flawlessly. I think thats the beautiful thing about incorporating it into a fantasy world. For the people who know a lot about the mythology it adds to the story, but for those of us who don’t, it’s a beautiful element of a world that we’re learning.
The last chapter is crazy ominous and has me so nervous for the rest of the series which I am already itching for while I type this after finishing the book about 20 minutes ago.
