Clint Wolf #7

But Not Forlorn: A Clint Wolf Novel: Clint Wolf Mystery Series, Book 7

Rate this book
The political race to determine the next mayor of Mechant Loup is heating up...literally. When one of the candidates is burned to death in a fiery blaze, Clint Wolf and Susan Wilson go straight from their honeymoon to investigating a brutal homicide. While there are a number of suspects, evidence and witnesses are lacking, and narrowing the list down becomes a challenge.

A late night attack on a Mechant Loup police officer leads to a curious discovery, but exactly how this discovery factors into the case is anybody's guess. Clint will have to reach out to the local media for help...and it might turn out to be the best decision he's made throughout the case. However, no one will be rejoicing when this investigation is over, and it's unlikely anyone from the police department will ever be the same again.

Bourg’s 7th offering in the Clint Wolf police thriller series has a political candidate for mayor fire-bombed after a political rally. While the Mechant Loup police department is focused on determining who could have perpetrated such a heinous act, the first responders deal with the guilt of not being able to save the man and suffer serious PTSD. Melvin, in particular, has recurring nightmares of the appearance and smell of the burned body. Bourg has Melvin attend a group therapy session with other traumatized first responders to offer helpful suggestions on how to cope.

Enjoy this atmospheric series set in southern Louisiana.

Interesting mystery

Clint Wolf and Susan come back from their honeymoon and they have to solve the murder of the person running for Mayor.
The story is action packed and there are plenty of murder suspects as every chapter gives a different twist. Good characters and they all had interesting chemistry. Though I could guess the end, reading the story was very interesting.

I read another good book in this series. I thought it was the second best book so far. I thought the previous one was the worse lol. Once again I liked all the characters and this story moved at a pretty good pace for this series. This story covered post traumatic stress and I thought It did it pretty good. The story also featured a regular secondary character and we got to learn more about him. I thought the story had a good ending and was not twisty as normal at the end which I thought was a good thing. I wish he would stop with some of the lame phrases like holy smokes and characters licking their lips because of nerves lol. It just squeaked in with a 4.0 on the dot. I say go ahead and give this book a spin.

Edge of your seat read!

This was my first book in the Clint Wolf series. And now, I have to go back and start with the first. This book was the real deal. A story that kept you wrapped up with the plots many twists, great characters, tons of heart stopping action and a ending as intense as all get out. BJ Bourg is a master story teller. Can't wait to start my series binge!

Book seven begins with a particularly gruesome murder which occurs the day Clint and Susan return from their honeymoon. Welcome home! The victim is the man running against Pauline for mayor so naturally suspicion centers on her. Clint has divided loyalties and his angst about it makes up a significant part of the storyline.

Angst and guilt and lying and loyalty are central themes in this book. The author does a good job with the mystery and a lucky, nearly missed action leads Clint to his big break.

A lot of the storyline centers on Melvin and his guilt from not being able to save the victim and the impact of his job on his family. It’s been brought up several times in previous books as well. The author does a great job conveying the fallout that first responders have as a result of their jobs, especially the people they can’t save.

The climatic events make you hold your breath and it’s a strong ending.

On a separate note, I don’t know if the author changed editors and/or proofreaders but there are quite a few errors and inconsistencies in this book that I’ve not noticed in previous books. Always annoying to me as it takes my head out of the story.

Clint and Susan almost had to postpone their wedding because of a murder, a week after it they're just back from their honeymoon when, quelle surprise, there's a particularly brutal murder which rocks the town of Mechant Loup to its foundations.
Mayoral candidate Lance Beaman is burnt to death in his car after a public meeting. It's overkill and whoever did it is in the wind.
First on the scene is deputy Melvin Saltzman and despite his best efforts, there's nothing he can do. The events of the night continue to haunt him throughout "But Not Forlorn" - it's nice to see a minor character finally brought to the fore.
The fingers are pointing at the incumbent mayor, Pauline Cain, and as both Clint and Susan are political appointees their every move is under scrutiny.
The problem for Clint, as he pursues his relentless and meticulous investigation, is that every suspect gets ruled out, leaving just one clue.
As always it is nicely played with plenty of red herrings along the way. It probably the tightest book in the series so far.
One minor quibble:- "lemon aid" turns up several times, I'm still scratching my head about whether is a typo or some kind of in joke.
4 solid Stars.

When a mayoral candidate is burned to death in his car, you know law enforcement is going to move mountains to solve the crime. But when the current mayor—friend to the current sheriff, deputies, and chief of detectives—is the prime suspect, things get more than a little complicated.

Political machinations drive the plot of this story, and it moves fast. For every lead followed, another roadblock appears. Detective Wolf is finally in a good place in his life, so of course he’s put to the test. And secondary characters take a more prominent role, leading to a gut-wrenching conclusion.

As always, the setting is so rich that it feels like I’m a citizen of Mechant Loup, and the characters of the sheriff’s department feel like friends. The plot is solid and well-paced, and the mystery comes to a satisfying end—even if the same can’t be said for all the people. A highly satisfying read.

Excellent Series!

I found the Clint Wolf series while looking for a new series to get me through this coronavirus isolation. I'm actually getting ready to start book 9. These books are excellent! Very well written and full of excitement, twists, & turns. The characters are real and you will like them a lot. I have two areas of criticism...Bourg uses his creative licence to stage the series in a fictional small Louisiana town in a fictional LA parish. This bothers me. I don't understand why some authors do this? It makes it much more difficult to connect with the locations when they aren't real! Particularly when I live in LA!!. Secondly, I wish he would add more detail. Extra detail would had to the plots and extend the enjoyment of the read! Having said that I still highly recommend this series!!

Enjoyed this book a lot, probably my favorite so far. I read a lot of reviews that said the couple is cringey but I like it. They love each other and have each other’s back. I do wish this wasn’t so closed door romance, I remember the first book gave more explicit details about Clint and Chloe but none of him and his wife.

I thought I had it figured out up until the end. Didn’t see this one coming! I also love the detailed police procedural aspects, this author seems to have a good handle on that and has clearly done his research. Each book I can see that happening and the plots aren’t too far out there. On to the next.

Okay

The killer as in most of the books of the series is revealed last couple of chapters and an unexpected character pretty much up to that. This one though I had it down to two early and one of them was correct. Maybe I got lucky who knows.

Unlike the last book the sexual innuendos were not a constant thing when Susan and Clint talk or see each other. I guess to make the story more exciting I need to know most if not all the woman have ample cleavage. At least I didn’t have to go through a description of someone going to the bathroom.

Another well-written police procedural in the Clint Wolfe series

Detective Clint Wolfe and Chief Susan Wolfe investigate a Molotov cocktail murder in small town Merchant-Loup, which has a crime rate matching that of New Orleans. The storyline is pleasingly complex, the characters well-conceived, and the red herrings satisfying. As with other BJ Bourg books, I wasn’t expecting many clues to finding culprits, so I immersed myself in the book and enjoyed the Clint & Susan Wolfe adventure.

Recommend to crime fiction fans.

Fooled

But Not Forlorn is a good book. I have read one other in this series but I'm sure they would be even better read in order. This is truthfully the first time I have been fooled about who the murderer is right up almost to the end. That tells me B J Bourg is a good writer. If you read this book it would be a good idea to read the six others first. However it is a good stand alone too. Enjoy.

Absolutely rivetting

What a classic thriller!. I have never got so engrossed in a story in my life. As a lifetime reader of Agatha Christie this was so Christieish that it took on the same mysterious qualities as many of her books. Never knowing until the last pages the answer to the puzzle. Thoroughly enjoyable and totalling rivetting. A must read for all devotees of murder mystery thrillers.

Intriguing murder mysteries.

Not usually one for straight murder mysteries. Generally stick to futuristic, fantasy, or Sci-FI. But I try this book on a lark to break up my normal routine. I love it so much that I have sped through the first 7 books. I plan on continuing through the whole series. The author is clever in throw out developing clues and keeping the story line interesting with work interrelationships and romance. Recommend this series.

Great read !!!!!

Great read that I enjoyed very much. It's amazing or how you can have Sony plots in one novel. I consider BJ a very well writer but also a very great dreamer. How this man can come up with so many ways end a novel he has to dream, search and invent worthwhile endings that we the readers have to like and accept! Congratulations BJ you've done it again..ty

Vengeance

What makes a person seek vengeance? This story examines that emotion from a neutral side trying to find not only the one seeking vengeance but the crime that cries to heaven for retribution and all those associated with it. HI explores how crime affects the perpetrator, victim and everyone that comes in contact with the crime. B J , thanks for saving the cop.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery.

I’ve enjoyed 7 books so far. I particularly like the fact that they are clean and can be read by everyone.
The objection I have is that the books are too short so I find myself having to purchase the next one too soon . It gets expensive.
I like Mr. Bourg’s writing and will continue this series.

Best Book of the Series So Far

I've become familiar with the characters in the Clint Wolf series and book 7 But Not Furlorned has been the most puzzling of all the cases to solve so far. I can usually narrow down the suspects long before the end but this one not so. I prefer that to wondering why the police can't see it.

But not Forlorn by BJ Bourg

This is probably the 9th book of this author that I have read. As with the previous ones, excellent from start to finish. Clint (along with his wife, Susan) once again solve the gory murder by burning of a Mayoral candidate, Lance. The ending and the perpetrator of the crime is a total surprise. Waiting to read his next book.

Clint Wolf and Susan Wilson have just returned from their honeymoon, when one of the candidates for the next mayor of Merchant Loop is murdered. There may be several suspects but no evidence or motive. The police investigate trying to find a motive.
An enjoyable crime story

'But Not Forlorn' was intriguing from the start. Add politics, secrets and deceit to any story line and you get a great read. Clint shows his remarkable detective skills again and as always, the good guys prevail. I look forward to reading more. A great add to your tbr list.

Clint and Susan just back from a honeymoon to investigate a bizarre murder. They find suspects, even Clint’s boss lied to him, motive was it about the political race, or what. Ran out of even questions to ask. When a shooting spree and a cop is targeted, the direction is changed. The suspects now, that couldn’t be right, but long time revenge can cause things to happen.gripping thriller to the last page.

Excellent read.

Sometimes the events from the past, get brought in to the present. A candidate, running for Mayor was murdered. He was not killed because of that, but his murder had to do with the past.
