THE DIARY
Sydney Tate spends a lot of time fantasizing about her small town's mayor, Matthew Stone. New in town, she has been working as the reporter for local government for the last six months, and has gotten to know Stone pretty well. She is shy about approaching him, however, since her last boyfriend was a real jerk who used and discarded her – humiliating her and costing her her job.

Sydney has a penchant for exhibitionism. Her book club has been reading a book called The Secret Diary of an Anonymous Victorian Lady. Sydney claims this book is faked and sets out to “prove” it by writing a steamy confessional diary of her own. Fictional, of course. How this would “prove” anything is beyond my understanding, but heroines in romance novels are always coming up with these bizarre ideas.

ANYWAY. Sydney is now walking around with a notebook filled with erotic fantasies involving her and Matt Stone (whom she calls X in the notebook). One thing leads to another and the notebook is misplaced. Guess whose hands it ends up in? You're right! But he only gets it after more than half the town has read it and jumped to the conclusion that Sydney and Matthew are having hot, exhibitionist sex everywhere.

This short story could have been amazing – perhaps if it was a full-length novel and given a chance to grow and breathe. I love when heroine's have this kind of “hang-up about men because her evil ex did a real number on her.” Love this plot. And she's naively exposing her psyche to the hero, with no regard for her personal well-being. In this scene, Matthew and Sydney are discussing the “common” male fantasy of having a woman meet him at his office wearing nothing but a coat and heels.

“What's not to like about that scenario?” His eyes glittered as he considered the fantasy. “A woman is taking the initiative and making it clear that she wants you right here, right now. That's always a turn-on.”

“I don't think that's the thing that's turning men on.” At least, that hadn't been her personal experience. “It's the fact that the woman is exposing herself to a great deal of risk.”

“The guy wouldn't let her get caught. It's for his eyes only.” From his tone, Sydney realized Matthew would take care of his woman even in the throes of passion. “That's part of the fantasy.”

“No, the most important part of the fantasy is that everyone knows what you are doing. If I visited a man at work and was wearing a trench coat, all of Seedling would be aware that I didn't have anything on underneath. And that's the turn-on for men.” She frowned at looked away. “They want to show how much power they have over women. Show the world that they can make normally reasonable women take stupid risks.”

Okay. It doesn't take a genius to realize that Sydney is completely opening her deepest fears and desires to this man. She's recklessly (or naively, depending) exposing herself to this guy. She's very lucky that he isn't a predator because this kind of conversation is pretty much blood in the water. But Matthew appears to have only half a brain, and doesn't really realize what's going on here.

He's got his own hang-ups, which seem to involve believing that – even though he has a reputation of being a Lothario – he is somehow not 'sophisticated' enough for the 'worldly' city girl, Sydney. I didn't really understand this attitude of his, which seemed rather tacked on to the story. Again, perhaps a full book would have been able to deal with this concept better.

Oh, and Sydney's girlfriends were annoying and I didn't trust them. I was begging Sydney not to share anything personal with them. Ugh, I didn't like them.

And I should mention that the endless talk of a man “protecting” his girlfriend and preventing her (them) from getting caught is nice in theory... but pretty hard to pull off in real life. There's almost no way you can be in a 'exhibitionist' situation and have no risk of being caught – or a way a man could 'prevent' a catch from happening. I just do not understand what the author is trying to say here. I get that Matthew is “noble” and Sydney's ex is scum, but I still fail to understand how Matt would prevent or be able to prevent the two of them from getting caught having sex in public. Stuff happens, you can't really be 100% sure and guarded against exposure if you are going to be running around having sex in public/semi-public places. Which is part of the reason people get a thrill from having public/semi-public sex. So...

I could complain about how fast the couple falls into bed together, but I won't. It's a romance AND a short story, at that. What do I expect? At least they've known each other for 6 months, that's more than I can say for most romances.

I'll give this 3 REAL STARS, 3 ROMANCE STARS, even though the sex wasn't really doing anything for me.

TALK OF THE TOWN
Remember when I said in the previous story that Matthew wasn't a predator? Well, this man in Story 2: TALK OF THE TOWN is a predator. And I hate him.

Isabel Bennett is a librarian and everyone thinks she is a quiet “good girl.” But she has a naughty, wild streak which finally became public when she got kicked out of her book club for wanting to read The Secret Diary of an Anonymous Victorian Lady. Her controlling, uptight father is worried that Isabel is becoming too daring and orders his associate, Sean Hawkins, to keep an eye on Isabel and “rein her in.”

Little does Mr. Bennett know that Sean and Isabel had an unexpected one-night-stand together one month ago.

Long story short, I spent the whole time telling Sean to go fuck himself. I did not like him, think he was sexy, or want him within 50 feet of Isabel.

He's kind of got this... weird fake dominant vibe that I can't easily explain. He obviously gets off on being bossy and commanding, possessive and controlling, but often Isabel will take control in bed and he is fine with that. Also, he frequently humiliates and disrespects her in front of her father, which makes me rabid with hate and anger. I don't know how she can stand even two seconds of that nonsense, if I were her he'd be out on his ass so fast he wouldn't know how he got there. But she just sits there and takes it. I mean, some of the humiliation stuff (while not my kink) I can understand. For instance, he orders her not to wear panties when she hosts the library's poetry jam. I don't like this – but I get that it's sexual and some sort of power play blah blah blah. I know some people enjoy this for some reason. Fucking around with her feelings/life/personal business in front of her dad – on purpose in order to humiliate her or embarrass her – “playing” with her sexually on some level at family dinners - on the other hand, is revolting and completely beyond any realm of understanding that I have for sexual games.

He also joins her book club, practically for the same reason. This is devastating for her, because before he strolled in, book club was a safe space for her where she could explore and discuss some of her more adventurous feelings.

I feel like he's basically a disrespectful asshole, is what I'm saying.

She's also trying to come through as her true self and explore some of her more “wild” urges which range from wanting to wear sexy high heels to wanting to read erotica. Yeah. So crazy and out-there. o.O Not really, but ANYWAY, instead of encouraging her and being supportive of her new feelings and boldness, he tries to shut the whole thing down and shove her back into the “proper lady” pocket. Eventually, at the end of the book, the author has him realize his mistake on this front, but I was not amused. He spends the book pooh-poohing her new-found feelings as “late rebellion” and offers to “guide her through this stage” (read: control her). He actively discourages her from something as simple as wearing stiletto heels which will give her pleasure. Mainly because he's a dick. I DIDN'T LIKE HIM. Perhaps I mentioned that?

1 REAL STAR, 1 ROMANCE STAR

CRAVING YOU
A sweet, “good boy” and a sweet, misunderstood “bad girl” find love and happiness together. Sweet and cute.

3 REAL STARS, 3 ROMANCE STARS, although, again, the sex wasn't exciting.

None of the stories really WOWed me. Everything works out a bit too quickly and perfectly for my taste. I think all three stories could have been blended into one larger story and fleshed out a bit more.

This more like 2.75 stars rounded up to 3. It's a collection of 3 stories about the friends who form a book club when they're kicked out of their small town's very popular book club for being too controversial. Each month's selection spurs one of the group members to finally make a move on the guy in town that they've been pining after.

At first I thought the first story was the best, but really I think it's just because it was the first. Even the specifics are different in each, they all sort of follow a similar trajectory that gets tired by the end. I should have like the the final story, a cute friends to lovers where the girl is the one afraid to commit, but by then I was tired of the formula of the MCs falling in bed together, both freaking out that it could never work, struggling with the fact that they were very much attracted to each other and that there's likely something more than just attraction there, and eventually realizing that they should give a relationship a try.

If you like a small town setting with nosy neighbors in your steamy reads, this might work for you.

Blaze is my favorite line of Harlequin books, along with Cosmo Red-Hot Reads. This is a collection of three novellas linked by friends Sydney, Isabel, and Laura. No longer welcome in their small town book club for choosing books deemed as too risqué, they've started the Blacklist Book Club, where they're free to read the books that have been banned by the stuffy ladies of their town.

The Diary
Rating: 4 stars

A very fun story about newspaper reporter Sydney, who writes a fake erotic diary about Matthew, the town mayor who she's been secretly crushing on. Her diary gets lost and winds up in Matthew's hands. Parts of the story aren't very plausible and are definitely formulaic, but it's a fun story nonetheless.

Talk of the Town
Rating: 3 stars

This story started out promising, but fizzled for me at the end. Isabel is the town librarian who appears stereotypically prim and proper. But that's not who she really is. Thanks to the book club's latest selection, she's learning to be assertive with her sexuality and she realizes that she shouldn't be ashamed of that.

Sean works for Isabel's father. Isabel and Sean have had feelings for each other for years, but haven't pursued it until recently, when they had a one-night stand. There's a lot of miscommunication that follows and I think I would have liked this story better as a longer book. The ending seemed rushed.

Craving You
Rating: 3 stars

This is a cute friends-to-lovers story. Laura is the town bad girl, of sorts. She doesn't have a ruined reputation, but people see her as someone who loves to have a good time and doesn't have much depth. Her best friend and neighbor, Connor, is getting ready to move across town because he's ready to settle down and find a serious relationship. The two have strong feelings for each other, but they're both scared to pursue a romantic relationship with each other for separate reasons. As with the previous story, I would have liked this one more as a full-length book just because the short length didn't allow for much character development.

***

Overall, it's a good collection of stories. There's a character, Miss Doris, who's the town gossip and she appears throughout the book. At first, she's meddlesome and annoying, but she turns out to be a really funny lady. Also, I would have liked more depth to the actual romances between the various couples. It took me a bit longer to finish this book than I expected it would, but I'll be reading this author again in the future.

I was very interested in this book when I saw that it was basically a story told in three parts. Lori Foster and Nora Roberts have both done something similar and I enjoyed their take on it. So I was very much looking forward to another version. In this book, we have three small town friends, banding together to form a blacklisted book club when they are kicked out of town's long standing reading group for being just a bit too progressive in their reading choices.

The story begins with newest in town, newspaper reporter Sydney. Next comes Isobel, the good girl librarian and then concludes with the wild child Laura. These are three very different women, each finding inspiration and love with the help of a book banned by the town's book club. The change of POV from story to story, not only gets us into each woman's thoughts, but helps to see her from her friend's perspective with their interactions with each other.

There is also a very important fourth woman, present throughout: Doris Brown, retired nurse and town busy body. But not in a malicious way. No, Miss Doris just seems to know which buttons to push to keep everyone moving in the direction she wants them to go. She was a fantastic character I would have loved to have seen more of.

With this broken up into three "novella" style stories, the emphasis is on the romance of each of the women. There is no insta-love, as each of the women have some history with their men. It's like skipping ahead to the drama and climax of each romance. The author did a great job with keeping each story tight and on point, though this means most of the backgrounds, back story and family connections are sacrificed. Overall, I enjoyed the book and gave this 4 stars.

Let Them Talk reminded me of one of my favorite Blaze novels from a few years back, Stephanie Bonds Seduction By The Book. If you read that book, you will definitely love this one. Its both similar and different at the same time, if that makes any sense at all.

I love the idea of erotic fiction or even non-fiction inspiring a relationship. Don't we all?

This book is comprised of three stories relating back to each of the girls, Sydney, Isabel and Laura. Each has a book that helps her get her man, one is an erotic diary, another is a self help book on seduction and the other is a cookbook. The books provide a lot of inspiration for the girls to get their guys.

Of the three stories, my favorite was the first one with Sydney and Matthew. I think it was the hottest of the three stories too, as Sydney's own diary, albeit a fake one, was the inspiration for the racy parts with Matthew.

Isabel and Laura's stories are the typical good girl wants to be bad and bad girl wants to be good sort of thing. With Isabel and Sean I would have liked to have seen her stand up to her father who was a little to "reputation" oriented and with Laura and Connor, well, I would have like a little more "bad."

There's something for everyone in this one. I always like the story within a story Blazes, especially around a holiday.

This is a great Blaze! And one for the keeper self!

This was a great, steamy read. I was in the mood to read something hot, and this did the trick. Three stories are contained in the book. The overall premise is the girls are members of a Blacklist Book Club and they read all the books the premier book club in town is out to remove from the library. The girls were each banned from that club for challenging the norm and desiring to read scandalous material. Each of the girls is also attracted to a man that is somewhat taboo, especially for a small town. The journalist is attracted to the mayor; the obedient daughter/librarian is attracted to her father's employee; and the "bad-girl" in town is attracted to the nice best-friend-next door. Seeing each couple give in to their desires was satisfying. I didn't care for the male lead (Connor) in the last story, as I thought he was too much of a nice guy, but the other stories were scorching. This trilogy would have made for a great full series that I could have totally gotten lost in.

I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

The small town vibe runs deep in Seedling, Washington. A fact that makes it very hard to break out of the role everyone is assigned. The women in this story begin their transformation with a renegade book club, and as a fellow book lover, I think this is a fantastic way to start! Knowledge is power, and if these men know what is good for them they better get caught up on their reading.

Three hot and cute short stories! It was great to see the three main characters, along with Ms. Doris Brown, be a part of a three stories. Speaking of Ms. Brown, I loved the nosy, matchmaking lady! I hope we see more of this small town, I'm sure there's plenty more gossip and love stories. Perfect book for a quick afternoon read.

Three short stories of three girlfriends who start a "blacklist" book club after they get thrown out of the town's Ladies Reading Circle. You have got to love small towns and the nosy people in them. This book was enjoyable. Recommend if you are looking for a fun, quick read.

I like the fact that there was three stories in one and they were all related. Three friends each going through their own thing but still together to help make those decisions.
I would definitely want to be apart of that book club.

The three stories in this book were good but I think it was just a tad too short. The HEA were a bit rushed but it was still a good fast read if you have only a few hours to read.
