She’s sunlight in human form. He’s spent his life in the shadows.

Betsy

I’ve spent my life caring for others—easing pain, offering comfort, healing wounds no one else wants to touch. But mine? They’ve stayed buried deep, hidden beneath humor and smiles. When George died, something inside me broke. And falling for a man who’d lost his memory only reminded me how dangerous it was to love someone you couldn’t fully know. Now, I pour everything into my work as a nurse… until Dr. Gabriel Stone shows up, cloaked in secrets, and starts chipping away at the walls I swore I’d never lower again.

Gabriel
Grief sent me running. Away from home, away from guilt, away from everything I couldn’t fix. But then I met Betsy Westbrook. She’s sunlight in human form—too bright, too good, and far too tempting for a man who’s done as much damage as I have. Every moment with her feels like grace I haven’t earned. And I know that if I let her in, I’ll want more. Too much more.

The fourth installment in the beloved Midnight Stars Saga, When Stars Dance at Midnight is a heart-stirring American historical romance set against the backdrop of postwar 1940s New England. Rich with emotion, tender moments, and second chances, this unforgettable love story explores the healing power of compassion, the resilience of the human spirit, and the quiet strength found in love after loss. Perfect for fans of clean wartime romance, emotionally layered characters, and sweeping family sagas that linger long after the final page.

Tess Thompson Romance...hometowns and heartstrings.

Tess Thompson is the USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author of contemporary and historical Romantic Women’s Fiction with over 60 published titles. When asked to describe her books, she could never figure out what to say that would perfectly sum them up until she landed on, Hometowns and Heartstrings.

She’s married to her prince, Best Husband Ever, and is the mother of their blended family of four kids and five cats. Best Husband Ever is seventeen months younger, which qualifies Tess as a Cougar, a title she wears proudly. Her Bonus Sons are young adults with pretty hair and big brains like their dad. Daughters, better known as Princess One and Two, are teenagers who make their mama proud because they’re kind. They’re also smart, but a mother shouldn’t brag.

Tess loves lazy afternoons watching football, hanging out on the back patio with Best Husband Ever, reading in bed, binge-watching television series, red wine, strong coffee and walks on crisp autumn days. She laughs a little too loudly, never knows what to make for dinner, looks ridiculous kickboxing in an attempt to combat her muffin top, and always complains about the
rain even though she chose to live in Seattle.

She’s proud to have grown up in a small town like the ones in her novels. After graduating from the University of Southern California Drama School, she had hopes of becoming an actress but was called instead to writing fiction. She’s grateful to spend most days in her office matchmaking her characters while her favorite cat Mittens (shhh…don’t tell the others) sleeps on the desk.

I thought the third book was the last in this series but was pleasantly surprised that the author gave us a fourth book. I was actually really happy about that because I liked Betsy so much in the last book. I do think she deserved to have her own story. This was, for me the best book in the series.

Oh sweet Betsy. I have waited for her story to be told and it couldn’t have been told better! I’m glad that both her and Gabriel get that happy life after the war and get to have their own happy family. They’ve done so much good in the world that they deserve it! I love returning to Greenwich every time!

The Midnight Stars Saga is such a wonderful series, and When Stars Dance at Midnight continues the reading pleasure. This is Betsy and Gabriel’s story, taking place in 1947 in Greenwich, Connecticut, Betsy’s hometown. World War II is finally over and life is returning to normal. Normal is a relative term, though, and some wounds take longer to heal – or may never heal.

Betsy and Gabriel’s first encounter is no meet-cute. They both want the last available copy of a book in the local bookstore and Gabriel is incredibly rude and dismissive. Betsy is happy to finally get the book, and also happy that she’ll never have to see that unpleasant man again.

Not so fast. There’s a new doctor at the hospital where Betsy is a nurse, and Dr. Stone is none other than Gabriel the Rude Bookstore Guy. He’s just as pompous and insulting as ever and makes it clear that he’s the doctor and she’s “just” the nurse and when (or if) he wants Nurse Westbrook’s opinion or advice he’ll ask for it.

Great start, but even with the abrasive personality Betsy is surprisingly drawn to him. And the feeling is mutual. Neither has any desire to enter into a relationship, though. Gabriel’s wife died under tragic circumstances and everything he thought he knew about his marriage proved false. Betsy’s adopted brother George died in the war and she’s still grieving, and her attempt at romance during the war abruptly, humiliatingly ended and left her doubting her judgement and the wisdom in opening herself up and trusting again. Neither Betsy nor Gabriel did anything wrong or could have prevented what happened to them, but they are “love-shy” nonetheless.

As they continue to work together, however, the attraction grows and Gabriel begins to soften and wonder if maybe he really isn’t the cold, cruel, aloof man his father was, if there could be more to his life than loneliness. Betsy is sometimes annoyingly overconfident on the outside, compensating for the insecurity and hurt on the inside, but as Gabriel begins to value and seek her opinion she starts to blossom and hope what’s happening between them can continue to grow.

Author Tess Thompson has done her usually excellent job with When Stars Dance at Midnight. It’s full of characters you can’t help but love and admire, a story with a lot of fun and romance but also serious situations addressed sensitively. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it without hesitation. I look forward to whatever Tess Thompson writes next. I received an advance copy of When Stars Dance at Midnight as a member of the author’s ARC team. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.

As soon as I got to the end of the third book in this series, I knew that I needed to know what was going to happen to Mireille's best friend Betsy. While not blood-related to Mireille and her mother - the central characters in the first books in the series - Betsy is still part of the family, as her family essentially adopted Mireille when she came stateside. She suffered her own loss and traumas during the war, just like the rest of them, and needed to have her own love story finally come to fruition.

In the previous book, Betsy was truly full of life, sparkling everywhere that she went. By the time we get to this installment, she has lost some of that shine. You know it's still deep in there, but sadness has overshadowed it. In fact, she even sets out to look for a book about grief to help her cope and to turn things around again. She finds it, and in doing so, literally runs into the solution to fill the holes in her heart and life. It's a man named Gabriel Stone, the new doctor at the hospital, who is also trying to soothe a broken heart and trauma.

It's a mix of a historical romance with a bit of the grumpy-sunshine trope. Gabriel is grumpy and understandably averse to love after the loss of his wife. He has walls up everywhere. Betsy is the sunny one, though a bit dimmed. They provide a balance to each other that serves them well at the hospital, making them the perfect team. And then, of course, that spills over into their personal lives. But there's always a catch that could potentially derail them as they find their way to each other.

Along the way is subtle commentary about lead contamination in children and our disrespect of veterans struggling to find basic necessities like adequate housing. Both feel like more modern problems, but they were even happening back after the Second World War. (How have we not solved these problems yet?)

Then in traditional Tess fashion, you have the wealthy family setting a benevolent example by using their privilege for good instead of being greedy. It's a message I would love all of the wealthy to hear and follow.

This may not have been my favorite installment of the saga, but it was necessary to round out the story and give it a sense of completion. It does stand on its own, but you will want to read the whole series to truly enjoy the experience. I know I'll come back to it again some day.

This is the fourth & final book in the series that spans generations and decades, Betsy and Gabriel’s story.

Betsy became a nurse to help those in need, especially those in the military while WW2 raged on and affected her family in so many ways. She continues her work not just at the hospital but making a difference in people’s lives around the town, even though in her heart, she is still grieving for George, her brother of the heart. The one thing she believes can help is a particular book, but there is only one copy left at the bookstore and a man she has never seen before wants it too. A man rude, completely unbearing and she hopes never to see again. But fate says differently because sometimes the people you don’t want in your lives, the people who you battle most, are still there and it’s for a reason.

Gabriel was a doctor and proudly served in the US military overseas, only to come back to a situation that made him close up even more. When he had the chance to leave the town and move to another hospital he took it. He had this idea that he was a rough man, not suitable for anyone and being nice was the last thing on his mind. This perky little, talkative nurse is not what he needs and promptly puts her in her place. But as they continue to work together, the realization that they are in each other’s lives for a reason comes into play. Especially since it might just be a little meddling from someone who isn’t around anymore.

Both are from families who are not poor but grew up in very different lifestyles. Betsy’s parents and family believe in giving back in so many ways to the community, while Gabriel’s father thought they were above everyone and was abusive. This book was a clean romance but still dealt with so many things that people lived through after the war. The stories we don’t always hear about or realize that took place. While it is the last book of the series, I can’t wait to see what the author writes next.

A wonderful series that picks up after WWII and trying to find the normal after so much heartbreak. Betsy found her calling as a nurse and continues to work at the hospital. Not what one would expect from her upbringing in society. Still mourning the death of her brother of her heart she goes to her favorite bookstore to purchase a book about grief. As she grabs the book a gentleman also reaches for it. She offers it to him, but the grumpy and very good looking man refuses to take it. Being a small world she runs into him the next day at the hospital. Dr. Gabriel Stone is the new doctor and she will be working with him.
Gabriel has demons in his past and the beautiful, happy nurse is going to be a pain with her talkative ways. But she is a great nurse, professional and personable and slowly she is working her way under his skin.
Sometimes it’s the family you choose and not the one you are born to that will guide you to fulfillment and happiness. A lesson that Gabriel has a hard time accepting. Love the continuing saga and the development of the characters. Another finds their HEA. Thank you to the author for this ARC for exchange of a honest, all opinions expressed are my own and mine alone. #WhenStarsDanceatMidnight #TheMidnightStarsSaga

Gabriel and Betsy might be my favorite couple in this series. They both are leery of relationships for heartbreaking reasons. He lost his wife after he came home from the war, in more than one way. First, he learned that she was pregnant with another man’s baby and then, after an argument, she dies in a car crash. He holds these things tightly to his chest and believes he will be married to his job and never find someone else. Until he meets Betsy, and then he starts having guilty feelings.

Betsy is living her life and is content. She loves her job but doesn’t want to open herself up to someone because she was embarrassed with what happened with her patient. They meet and start off on the wrong foot, but as they spend more time with each other, he is a doctor and she is a nurse, they open up to each other and realize their first impressions weren’t accurate.

I loved the slow build-up and the sweet interactions they had. I also appreciated how he respected her and listened to her suggestions on the job. His mom’s story was also sweet and the case that brings them together to begin with had a realistic quality that had me rooting for all of them.

I really enjoyed this book. I received an ARC and this is my honest, voluntary review.

When Stars Dance At Midnight (The Midnight Stars Saga 4)
By: Tess Thompson

5 Stars

This series has been amazing, but I am so glad Betsy got her story and what an amazing story it is.

Working as a nurse is a calling that Betsy never saw coming but is so glad to do. Since the war and the loss of so many people, the call to help others is on the mind of everyone. When a new doctor, Gabriel Stone, comes to town, Betsy finds herself helping not just those in the hospital to heal. but those that work in and near it as well. This was a book about love. A love built from tragedy with forgiveness at its center. Dr. Stone and Betsy both face so much loss from the war, but together, they find peace and a love that is pure and magical. They have a beautiful story.

Tess has outdone herself with this series. From start to finish, it was tragic and moving. Emotional and captivating. I loved this book, from the love of a nurse and doctor to two meddling mothers. This book was love and light built from the ashes of war. It was emotional and grabbing. It made me laugh and cry. It was a wonderful way to finish an already wonderful series.

When Stars Dance At Midnight is a such fantastic ending to this historical series. I was captivated by the storyline the moment I began reading. Betsy and Gabriel’s first unexpected meeting is not an impressive one. Being a person with a positive outlook in life, Betsy tries to see the best in everyone but Gabriel’s negativity really takes her by surprise. His attitude toward her is a puzzling one but she is determined not to give up. Working together and observing his interactions with others provides her an insight into other aspects of his personality which provides her the opportunity to see another side to this man. Will she be able to break through his rough exterior? This question is answered through the friendship that Betsy and Gabriel are attempting to build. As a reader, it is always a delight when I can revisit family and friends from the previous books in this series combined and intermingling new characters that I came to enjoy as well. I highly recommend this series finale. It is one of Tess Thompson’s top reads of mine. Thank you to the author for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

The fourth and final book in the Midnight Stars Saga is lighter in tone than the previous three books, which is fitting, now that the wars are past. There are still wounds, both emotional and physical, from the past and Betsey and Gabriel are both dealing with those. Gabriel, like most men of the time, wants to ignore the things that haunt him, but then it comes out in his relationships with others. Betsey is irrepressible, and bounces back from his coldness and rudeness, gradually showing him a better way. As they work together to help Tommy and his family, healing begins. I think the author does a good job with Tommy's parents, Frank and Alice, detailing the struggle that faced many veterans coming home to a lack of housing and good jobs. I highly recommend every book in this series for the excellent characters and the emotional depth of the stories. I am happy to be an ARC reader in exchange for an honest review, because I have
enjoyed everything Tess Thompson has written. These opinions expressed are mine alone.

When Stars Dance At Midnight, book 4 in the Midnight Stars Saga series is now my favourite book of the series. Its focus is on Betsy and Gabriel’s story of a really unforgettable love story, second chance and complicated collection of insecurities, losses and past demons.
Story picks up exactly where the previous book left after the WWII when aftermath of war leaves people trying to pick up the pieces of their lives struggling with grief and guilt, but also trying to keep going forward with strength and determination to make it better. Especially veterans.
First impressions and wrong assumptions can make complicated relationships and that’s what happens when Betsy meets Gabriel who happens to be the new doctor.
Their devotion to helping people is what makes them a great team to discover and find answers to a difficult medical problem. Betsy a sunshine in the human form and Gabriel a man who doesn’t let his feelings show. Opposites attract definitely.
Kindness and so much positivity and love can make the ice melt, family of choice, friendships and much much more in this book you’ll going to love it immensely as much as I do and really recommend it to anyone. Fantastic and inspiring read.

When Stars Dance at Midnight is an amazing read. You are going to love this so much. Tess Thompson brings beauty in this historical romance. Betsy is a nurse who is still grieving for the what the war has done. She is so smart and has so much strength. Gabriel is a little grumpy with reason from what happened with his wife. He's the new doctor in town and not looking for anything but a new life for his mother. I love his relationship he has with her. There is such a a spark between Gabriel and Betsy as they work closer together to figure out what is wrong with their patient. You feel the friendship blossom as they grow closer and discover what they have in common. You are going to love how they jump in and help a struggling family with the help of their parents. I could not put this down. I fell hard with Gabriel and Betsy. You need to one click this today.

This is an amazing read, difficult to put down and, it is the last book in "The Midnight Stars Saga" series. The book is set in Greenwich, 1947, it is the story about Betsy a head nurse and Dr. Gabriel Stone. The storytelling is at it's best, new characters are met in this story and it unravels at a good pace. A boy with a mysterious illness, that needs investigation. A bookshop and it's owner and readers that meet. It is also nice to reconnect with Mireille, Peter and their children. True friendship and the bonds within a family. Second chances, resilience, when hardships are crossed. The true meaning of love and to have hope when choices are made. How the quote in honor to George: "He shone so brightly when he was here on earth, now he dances with the stars" fits perfectly with the book and it's meaning. I can truly recommend this book!

This last book in the Midnight Stars Saga, was a delightful look into Betsy’s story. After loosing her brother in the war, she continues with her nursing career. Nursing becomes her passion. An encounter in a bookstore where she and rather arrogant gentleman both reach for the last copy of a book begins a most unusual connection. At the hospital the next day, she meets the new doctor and who does it turn out to be……her bookstore nemesis. This is a truly lovely story of two people with sad pasts and how they learn about each other and their sadness. Beautifully written by Tess Thompson, this is an historical series that you can’t put down. Read this series in book order to follow the many characters.

Betsy and Gabriel cross paths in the local bookstore. It wasn't a very good start as they clashed over the same book they wanted.
As it turned out, much to Betsy's dismay, Gabriel is the new doctor at the hospital where Betsy works as a nurse.
He is isn't easy to get on with as past experiences have affected him badly. Betsy is a good nurse though and he soon knows it and together they work well as a team.
Things arent straightforward for either of them but soon they overcome all the hurdles which presented and much to the delight of Betsy's family and Gabriel's mother who have blended well into the Westbrook family, they are able to find happiness.

I just love these characters and really wished the very best for them.

Wonderful Story

An absolutely moving story. Betsy is a nurse who gave her all for her patients. She had been through rough times during the war, but chose to channel her energy into nursing. Taking care of those wounded and maimed from fighting a far off war.
Gabriel, is a doctor, new to the hospital that Betsy works at. Raised by a cold and harsh father, Gabriel, struggled through a marriage where he didn't know how to really love another. When the war came calling, Gabriel answered the call and spent years over seas patching young men back together to hopefully get them to a well equipped hospital. The war had an effect on him and by the time the war was over, so was his marriage.
When he first met Betsy, Gabriel, was smitten. This story delves into their story.

I have loved all the books in this series, but this finale is indeed extra special. Set in post WWII New England, Betsy Westbrook has found her calling as a nurse. But her heart remains broken, from the war time loss of a man she considered her brother & best friend, and her strong attraction to an amnesia patient who ended up being a married man. When the hospital gets a new doctor, he is brash & insulting to her. Betsy is sunshine & light, but Gabriel is locked in darkness, dealing with his own grief and demons. How these two talented medical professionals come together to find a happy ending makes for a great story.

I loved this story so much, I couldn’t put it down until I finished it, so fantastic. Betsy became a nurse during the war and loves her job and helping people, she is also so sweet and full of sunshine. She meets Gabriel at the book store and it wasn’t good. Only to find out that he is the new doctor she must work with. I loved seeing them bond over helping a sick child. Grabriel has so many demons to overcome. I loved all the characters in this story, the love, friendships, and kindness to all. It’s a beautiful, heart-touching story. I have loved this whole series, hope you will read and enjoy as well.

This book is the perfect way to end this excellent four book saga. This is a wonderful story of finding healing, hope, reconciliation and love following WWII. It also looks at how the war changed things and the struggles to adapt to post war living. The impact of environment, health, possible infertility and treatment of vets added very thoughtful dimensions to the story. I highly recommend this compelling story. This book can definitely be read without reading the first three books, however I recommend reading them as well. They provide depth to the story and to the title of the book.

I am not usually into historical novels but this series has been so good. I have enjoyed all of the stories. I think I like this one especially because Betsy is a nurse and I worked as a nurse for 50 years. I can identify with some of her feelings for her patients. And Gabriel is a doctor who seems to care very much for his patients. But he also is working through some issues with his wife who left him for someone else. I know those who fought in the Second World War suffered in many ways. And had to leave family behind for long periods. I enjoyed watching Gabriel and Betsy work through the traumas they both had endured and seen. A great story and so touching.

Tess Thompson does it again! She delivers another amazing book with the fourth book of the Stars at Midnight series. Betsy gets her story and meets a remarkable man but one who has demons and heartbreak from his past. But everyone deserves a second chance at love. This book is set after World War II and shows the pain and loss that so many Americans were facing. The war was over but not all of the heartbreak. The book is uplifting in that the characters form an extended family to help those less fortunate.

Omg Tess has done it again and another great story to end the series this time it's Betsy and Gabriel who when they first meet really don't like each other they both work at the same hospital and come together when a boy called Tommy is ill in hospital and they work together to help find out the problem, other families become involved and all come together to help the less fortunate families by starting a foundation as you'd expect a few problems along the way but all comes together with a wedding and a family great book again to finish off the series, well done tess

Betsy gets her story! She’s living in a world that’s changing for the better and she wants to be part of it! Her nursing career has opened up a new world for her even though she longs for more. Gabriel is haunted by his past but sees a possibility for a bright future with Betsy. Oh, I loved this story! Gabriel’s second chance at happiness! Betsy’s chance for a love to call her own! I love soul redemption stories. The strength and power of love to overcome what seems impossible. Tess always writes with such beauty that devour everything she writes. Another triumph!

Wonderful addition to The Midnight Stars Saga series by Tess Thompson.
Sweet, heartwarming story of finding love and peace after troubles in life and the world.
Betsy is grieving the loss of her “brother“ and all the innocents lost during the war.
Gabriel is the new grumpy doctor at the hospital where Betsy is the head nurse in her section. He recently lost his wife and is still recovering from that loss.
Even though things are tense between them, they soon become a team for their patients.

Veterans coming back from the war find themselves struggling to survive in the world they helped save and for Betsy and Gabriel they have to deal with the trauma and sadness the war left them with.
Together with their families, they find themselves fighting a major social health issue which draws them closer to each other.

This was a great historical romance, and Bk 4 in the series. I could hardly put it down. Nurse Betsy is teamed up grouchy Dr Gabriel Stone in the local hospital. Together they diagnose a young boy with lead poisoning. That leads them to joining with Betsy's parents in starting a foundation to help struggling families of war veterans. More people join and a new "family" group is formed. People learn to love, to forgive themselves, and to find new meaning in life. So good!

As usual, Ms Thompson has outdone herself. She brings the characters to life so that you feel like they're your friends. Betsy and Gabriel are working together in the hospital when a young boy comes in. They discover that he is suffering from lead poisoning from the house he lives in. A mutual admiration turns to love, but he is so broken, it will take a special woman to help him heal. Is Betsy up to it?

A wonderful addition to the series. Heartbreak and love woven through the story. Betsy’s first encounter with Dr Gabriel Stone at the book store leaves an unpleasant impression. To her surprise he is the new doctor and she is assigned to work with him. Gabriel Stone is new in town, arriving with his widowed mother. At first their personalities and habits clash. Soon they unite to treat a sick young man. As they continue to work together, the feelings towards each other deepen

Gabriel has lots to overcome, including a stern father and unfaithful wife. Their work towards fighting the issue of lead in household products unite the pair, as does the creation of the Winchester Foundation, established to honor a childhood friend, and Betsy’s adopted brother George

What does the future hold? Can Gabriel overcome his past demons?

Thank you to the author for this ARC. This review is my honest opinion.
