No, no, no. Just no. I’m open minded but no I couldn’t do it. DNF @49%

The prologue is a big warning in the get go that this book pushes the envelope, HARD. After I got past my initial revulsion of how wrong and twisted it was it made me think, “well how the hell did this poor girl get into such a state not to fight back/be unable to fight back in this horribly abusive relationship”? And I was hopeful that it would be a story of her getting out and fighting back, but it jumps back to Shelby getting engaged and witnessing all her control disappearing. And I’ve read books that show the background of abusive relationships but either the abusers have control early or the women are heavily in love and buying the act. But I’m sorry Shelby could have gotten out early, and I was not buying that she was in love AT ALL. If anything she came across as the gold digger she denied she was when she keeps digging her heels in saying “she’s in it now” as a reason to put up with all the crap thrown at her. Even her stating she’s out of a job and a home doesn’t work, she could get her diner job back easy and she probably has friends for temporary lodging. And if you want to pick on Dirk’s obsession and how he set thing up and how it was inevitable, it doesn’t mean a girls got to respond. Like flattering that this eligible bachelor wants you but she could have said no. Like there is no chemistry, one date should have made it clear. And if he got stalkery well HELLO you got your red flags without all the drama and can take appropriate action.

My dealbreaker was that stupid contract, and why she was stupid enough to sign it. What the absolute fuck. IT WAS ALL RED FLAGS! He ultimatumed her about signing away her medical rights, childbearing control, probably agreed to astronomical fines if she didn’t cut her hair the appropriate fucking length. HOW CAN SHE BELIEVE HE LOVES HER IF HE IS COMFORTABLE LEGALLY GAGGING ALL OF HER RIGHTS. No no nononononono no. Did I say no? Here’s another.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Get out of the relationship! Run! If Cindy or whatever her name is wants psycho man she can have him. If you’re so smart then go to night school or something and be a lawyer like she wanted to be instead of a future tabloid story and a cautionary tale.

So yeah, this book got my rarely given one star because I saw no reason these circumstances should have been allowed to occur. It’s unbelievable that it could progress without someone rational pulling the breaks early. And I know not everyone is smart enough to see the warning signs, but they’re too obvious, and they’re way too horrible that I can’t see someone going along without already having the fear of god in them in regards to their abuser. The type of abusive relationship this book is trying to emulate is the typical slow buildup where there is gaslighting and isolation to the point that the abused doesn’t realize what’s happened until they’re in it. That sort of ignorance I understand because it’s subtle. That contract was not subtle. The lack of chemistry ruined believability that she even cares for the relationship to make excuses for Dirk. She hates the living conditions within a week and is obviously disregarded. And her inner voice keeps pointing out the obvious so she is very much aware.

So yeah I’m out. I cannot make any mental excuses for this. Absolutely none. Shouldn’t have happened. The warnings did not cover stupid characters.

1.0 star, 30%, F+ (I don’t even know if Fs can be positive)

For the love of all that is holy, mind your triggers, because The Degradation of Shelby Ann is guaranteed to hit quite a few. This dark contemporary story by Emma Cole had me hooked from the soul crushing prologue all the way through the bitter end.

Small town girl Shelby Ann is swept off her feet by the handsome rich older man who appears too good to be true. Despite her unstable mother's warnings, Shelby leaves everything behind to embark on a high society life she is horribly unprepared for.

It doesn't take long for her to notice the cracks in her soon to be husband's seemingly perfect facade. With each red flag that arises, Shelby ignores that little self preserving voice in her head and delves deeper into a life that threatens to break her.

Not everything or anyone are what they seem, and while there may be a person or two keeping a watchful eye on Shelby, their hands aren't anywhere near clean. You will find yourself having confusing feelings about multiple characters, wondering if they have redemption in their future or will just dig themselves into an inescapable hole.

This book left me with far more questions than answers, but you better bet that I will be there when all the secrets come to light.

As the author states this series will be a slow building RH series.

The Degradation of Shelby Ann by Emma Cole

*Updated Review, also Audiobook Review at Bottom.

Well Done! 😍

I Give this Book a 4/5 Star Rating, Listing as High 4.
Zero Spoilers.

Cliffhanger(?): Absolutely!, and as soon as The Redemption of Shelby comes out I’m jumping into it immediately. I’m blown away at what all transpired, totally thrown for a loop in the best possible way! 😍

Relationship Type: Technically MF-ish, but let’s just go with - its Complicated Lol
But this is a RH series, so it’s not forming immediately.
Insta(?): Absolutely Not.
Heat & Dark Heat: 5/5
Dark(?): I don’t mind putting in the 3.5/5 Spectrum of my Scale of Darkness. Please understand I love Dark Reads, Dark to Extreme Dark I have Zero Triggers. So I can guarantee this book will be darker for others.

Romance: 3-3.5/5, it makes since to rate it this way, but it could also go just a bit higher in its own way.

Drama & Suspense: For this book they need to be listed together, both are very High in this book and most of your questions aren’t answered in this one and I’m absolutely okay with that, I’m honestly just eager for more.

Pacing: hmmm…Mid-Mid Fast
I actually didn’t mind the pacing overall, I know it would’ve probably dragged too much with unnecessary fillers. And it’s better to just get down to the meat of the story and I honestly couldn’t stop reading.
I kept wanting to know what was going to happen next every moment.

Predictable(?): A confident flat out No.
At least to me. 😆

Audiobook Review:
Overall: 4/5
Story: 4/5
Performance: 4/5
Narrators: Bridget & Jake Bordeaux
This was so interesting to listen two, these narrators do it so well, you’re instantly pulled into the story and the make it so easy to picture. I can’t wait for Book 2 to come out!

If your looking for a sweet romance then step away from this book because theres very little thats sweet about this story. Its pretty dark and theres lots in this book that might and will upset some folks. As for me i like my book a bit dark but even i was a bit shocked at some of the things that happen to Shelby in this course of this book.

Shelby (FMC) thinks that shes found the perfect man in Dirk but his nice guy image hides the ugly side of him. By the time she finds out the truth shes living in a house of secrets, lies, abuse and an undercurrent of animosity. My god the twists and turns kept me guessing from start to finish. You dont know whose out for themselves or what theyre hoping to gain from each other. I also found myself trying to work out who the good guys are but you find out quickly that there arent any.

That ending completely threw me and im finding myself hoping that Shelby comes back in the next book and gets some revenge on all that was done to her. A book for lovers of a darker book thats for sure

I’m finding Emma Cole’s novel the Degradation of Shelby Ann hard to review, most likely because I’m so conflicted about it. There were aspects that were brilliant, others that were emotionally hard to read and some that were even frustrating. Unfortunately, it all makes for a fragmented critique in this post.

In the earlier chapters, we hear a lot from Shelby Ann’s inner voices. One is a snarky and bullying voice; as a reader, I was never entirely clear whether this voice was an imaginary friend that Shelby had never grown out of (at one point she described it as ‘her crazy entity,’ or if she was starting to go off the rails like her mama. The second appeared to be more of a natural inner voice and could most often be heard arguing with the crazy entity. I must admit that I quite liked the crazy entity. She was Shelby’s voice of reason and white she was caustic and near-verbally abusive, she spoke more sense than Shelby ever did. If only Shelby Ann had listened to her from the start.

I spent the first half of the book mentally screaming at Shelby Ann to get out while she still could. It was a fruitless endeavour; the prologue had already told me that she did not. In fact, knowing that there was no help for Shelby made reading this story all the more difficult. It wasn’t just the absence of hope that made me uncomfortable but my complete lack of empathy towards the character.

From the start of the book, Shelby Ann knows that something is not right. She suspects that she is only a novel distraction, is confused by appearances and wonders what has gotten into her mild-mannered, attentive boyfriend. On a gut level, she believes that Dirk doesn’t want her as she is but ignores the voice in her head telling her so, despite feeling as though she is going through numerous tests. This is further compounded with the introduction of Nina as Shelby’s chaperone and the introduction of the pre-nuptial agreement.

Her insecurities mask the common sense Shelby’s crazy entity speaks with, but she also ignores her mama’s warnings and Carter’s explicit instruction to leave. By this point, I’d run out of patience with her character. Reading of her was like knowing that a horrific car crash is about to happen but being unable to do anything about it. You know you should look away but you just can’t.

What happens next can only be described as abuse. There isn’t a shred of dubious or consensual non-consent which might make the second half of the book closer to morally acceptable. This is Shelby being battered by her husband, forced into activities in which she doesn’t wish to participate and intoxicated with various narcotics in an attempt to make her more pliable. Shelby being used as little more than a set of holes while Carter watches on, failing to help her as he has his own agenda to complete. It’s frustrating because he could save her – no, should save her – but passes opportunity after opportunity in furtherance of his own goals. Worse still, we’re never given more than half a glimpse of what may be happening in Carter’s world so are never presented with an enticement to continue waiting for the mystery to be revealed.

One thing I do want to note is that a lot of people are describing the Degradation of Shelby Ann as a reverse harem novel. While the blurb states that it will be RH as the series progresses, this is not a reverse harem novel in the slightest. There are MFM moments and others that are FFF with an M bouncing around between. None of it is consensual and it most definitely does not have a reverse harem vibe. If that’s what you’re looking for, this is not the novel for you.

If I’m brutally honest, I don’t know whether I was even supposed to enjoy this novel. It pulled me in because I wanted to explore the family dynamics and secrets in greater depth but I wouldn’t say that I felt a connection to any of the characters. I consider it more a study on the human psyche gone wrong. If the next book in the series, the Redemption of Shelby Ann, was placed in front of me in the next month or two I would read it to satisfy my curiosity over the backstory to the plot and the mysteries presented in the Degradation of Shelby Ann. That said, with a potential 11-month wait until the second book releases, I may have lost the inclination by then.

WOW DARK WOW SICK WOW TWISTED

Welcome to the dark side.

Oh God this book is dark dark dark twisted twisted super twisted. Emma don't disappoint with the darkness of her books she's not scare to write dark, sick and twisted books and I love it.

Shelby is a young woman that is easily manipulated because of the situation that she is in. She have a bad childhood with her mom. So she thinks being with Dirk will help her but she got out of a bad home to be in a worst situation with Dirk. She is a magnet for bad situations. And hell did she have a lot of bad stuff happening to her YEP it was a LOT I don't know how she hold it up because certanly I wouldn't.

Shelby start this relationship with Dirk but in the inside she see the redflags but she thinks that doesn't have any other options than being with him. There is a lot of secrests and betrayal. A lot of sick and twisted turns I was like wtf every 5 minutes. I was turning my pages so fast because I needed to know what the hell was going to happen. A lot of things were very unexpected and dark. At times I had to stop reading and take a minute to process what was happening because it was a lot. I cried a couple of time and I was so frustrated that I had to get my self in control to continue reading.

Shelby was written in a way were you conect with her and feel every emotion of her, apart of everything being very well detailed so you feel like you are in there with her. Her internal dialogue contradict her acctions and is very relatable most of the time we see the redflags but in the end we end up in a bad situation. Inside she knows that is a bad decision but she do it anyway. It was very real for a girl in her situation apart of her being so young.

With a lot of books you have an idea of whats going to happen in the end. But with this one I was scare to read the last pages. I didn't know how it was going to end I didn't even had an idea. I love dark, sick and twisted books because they are unpredictable and they test your limits and boundaries just like this book this book got me thinking a lot. By the end of the book I was on the edge of my sit anxious and scare. But wow I need more of it.

Did I enjoy this book? No, but would I want to continue the series?Yes

I went into this book blind so I did not understand what was happening, and I still don't. I am now reading the title and it said it's a dark reverse Harem, and I'm confused because this was just her going to struggle's pain and degradation from her husband(who is the villain) there's no other lover as to even see except one and I still don't understand his intentions.

Because of this, I want to continue to the next book to find out, understand the world, and see her happy ending because she went through so much. I don't want to be victim blaming, but from the very beginning, she's suspected this man.Her husband was a messed up individual and still proceeded in trying to be in love with him.

Carter was barely in this book, and he's supposed to actually love her.I still don't understand him, but probably book two will expound and give more details on what and why he did what he did.

I am reading too many dark books because this wasn't as dark as I thought it was going to be. Certain scenes of abuse weren't explicit, and the sexual scenes, even though horrific there weren't brutal. It could be that I wasn't emotionally invested.

Ahh I’m finding this book so hard to review!! Tbh it’s the hardest review I’ve ever had to write!! I feel twisted and horrific for even implying it’s good? Because of the situations that occur.. it has me feeling all twisted and questioning my morals. NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED. I legit had to message @booksboysandnails 😂

The title is no joke… it really is the degradation of poor Shelby Anne 🥺 if you are looking for light hearted or a feel good book then this is NOT the book for you!!! You’ll know if this book is too much for you just after the prologue. Seriously, the trigger warnings are all there. I completely understand some peoples opinions and reviews on this book and this is my personal opinion so hold no offence. It doesn’t mean I condone any of the behaviour but I’m reviewing based on the book. I sat there with angry tears streaming down my face because guys I think this is the most brutal book I’ve read EVER. Dark isn’t the word I would use. It’s downright outrageous (events that happen. Not the book itself.) I have never had to put a book down before due to the content! It pushed me close to my limits. I had to carry on though to see it through. I needed to see how it would end… I should have known there is another book (the downside to going in blind) I also didn’t know it is a slow burn RH!! This has blown my mind to be honest as not one of these fuckers deserve Shelby. I feel well protective and want to stab anyone with a dick right now 🥺😭 I’m crying all over again just thinking about how broken she is right now!! Bloody hell this book was all sorts of fucked up 😭😭 but so good that i devoured it in one go?! Yeah, work that out 🙈 this review is very cryptic and doesn’t help explain the storyline but honestly, if I start going into it then I’ll end up writing an essay with 10000 spoilers!! I’ve rated it four stars because I’m routing for you Shelby Ann and I need to believe there is a flicker of light left for you!! I’m here for the long haul!! Even if I have to down a bottle of wine in the process to get me through it 😂🙌🏼

Dark & Twisted story

Shelby Ann want to escape her humble life and demanding mother. Enter Dirk, older, established and respected in the community. Despite hearing constant warnings from her mother, Shelby continues with her relationship. Her relationship takes a depraved & twisted turn. Shelby is obviously in way over her head. No where to run and nobody to turn to.
Heed the trigger warnings.

This is my first read by Emma and I am floored. I knew it was going to be dark…but I haven’t read anything this dark in awhile and I was trapped within the pages of this author’s words. Emma has a created a world that is corrupted and sadistic with a heroine that I found myself praying for. The cliffhanger is killer!!
Shelby has a certain level of naivety, being raised within a hell created by her mother. She is smarter than people realize, yet she fell in love with a warped and twisted wolf in sheep’s clothing. Her world takes a very dark turn when she finds out the truth of the man she married.
Dirk is a smooth talking, sweet guy…at first. His mannerisms made my skin crawl and when his monster came out to play I knew he was a villain that wouldn’t be redeemable. He is beyond sadistic and his partner is even worse.
Carter is part of Shelby’s past, he is puppet for the head of Dirk’s family. My heart broke for him, as he was “reintroduced” to Shelby as her bodyguard. But can he truly save her before she is broken beyond repair?
I cannot stress enough that this is a very dark read. If you have triggers, please tread carefully. Myself, I couldn’t stop turning the pages - I found myself reading this during my workday and ordering take out for dinner so I could finish.
Emma has definitely gained a fan with me over this and my heart is anxiously waiting for the conclusion.

Outstanding

This book is dark... Very, very dark, but I love it. After Lark I was looking forward to more of Emma Cole's work in this genre and she delivered. There's something about the way this is written that makes me come back for more of this. Shelby deals with so much and I want to see her reclaim her power.

In the arms of my nightmare

Emma Cole has such a way of diving into darker matters when it comes to the world of romance. Not only does she focus on scenarios that have the chance of happening in the world around us, but kept hidden from familiar eyes, she doesn't try to sugarcoat or lessen the horror that surrounds these types of situations. There's brutal honesty in her writing, and you have to respect an author that can address these issues and still make a captivating and thrilling story.

With that being said, and if you didn't realize it after reading my first paragraph, this book has tons of triggers. Cole does give a warning before the book begins, so be sure to read that and then decide if this book is for you. If you still need some convincing, I believe that if you can get past reading the prologue, you will be able to stomach anything else that this book shoves at you. I feel that this book is on the higher end of darkness level, although I'm sure there are plenty of books that are darker. I always love to read these kinds of books even if they make me cringe at times, just to see how far out of my comfort zone I can be pushed. Testing boundaries and learning your limits is one of the fun things about books like these. I guess it brings somewhat of a thrill to it.

With the way the characters are in this book, following agendas, plotting to get the outcome that they desire, dabbling in drug usage, and waving red flags galore, I will say with complete confidence that this story caught me by surprise multiple times while reading. Some of the characters are unpredictable at times, flopping from someone you think you can trust, to someone who is also manipulating those around them for some reason or another. The multiple POVs in this book do help with making a decision on which characters to support and give a bit of a glimpse to what is going on behind the scenes while the main storyline revolving around the fmc is happening.

The fmc, Shelby Ann, is put through the ringer in this book. Fooled by a wolf in sheep's clothing, her naivety and desire to escape her mother had her easily falling for a man she thought loved her. She's young and has a lot to learn, but I think this situation of hers was a huge wake up call to not trust everything at first glance. However, what I love about Shelby is that she had a fire in her, a backbone that didn't want to go away even after the trauma she experienced. She's going to need a lot of work to heal, but I think that fire is going to come back with a vengeance and she will emerge like a phoenix from the ashes.

The ending of this first book was exactly what I was hoping for yet not at the same time. It's a stepping stone to where we need to go, even though I'm not thrilled with some of the ending (is anyone ever with major cliffhangers?), I know that this is what needed to happen to get Shelby to where she needed to be. To top it off, there is a major secret being kept hidden that I'm dying to find out, so I'll just speculate on it until the next book comes out. Fly free, little one, fly free.

O-FUCKING-KAY. UMMMM?! WHAT.
Going into this, I knew this was going to be a dark romance which I love but that did not prepare me for the WHIRLWIND OF FUCKERY I was about to experience. I definitely wanted to read this before I started The Redemption of Shelby Ann, which I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC read for but HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

First off, I just want to say that Shelby Ann is a fucking fighter. For real. No matter for what she has been through, and experienced, the fact that she has to deal with the stupidity, assholery and controlling pieces of shit around her, she is a fucking BAD ASS. The banter between her and the voice in her head, especially the voice in her head was absolutely funny as fuck sometimes. And you have no idea how badly I wanted to destroy some people. Everyone can go get fucked apart from Jerry, Rafe, and Carter. Seriously. Jerry was absolutely adorable, Rafe was a bad ass for sticking up for what’s right, and Carter… oh my god. I need more Carter. Don’t even fucking mention Nina, Dirk or Winston Sr. to me without holding their heads in your hands. But Dirk… *sigh* if only he wasn’t literally fucking insane. Also, who the fuck decides their alter ego name is Winston… like? Do they want to be their dad in the bedroom or something? Like daddy issues kink, hello?

But I kid you not, the twists and turns and the fucking bomb drops in this book were FUCKING PHENOMENAL. It was insane, and I did not have a moment worth of peace to find my bearings. I cannot wait to read the next instalment in this series!

When the author decided to use degradation in the title she was not playing around.

This book is DARK. And when I say dark I don’t mean its a “oh they’re just a psychotic couple doing kinky shit and hurting others/and or themselves but lol HEA” type of dark book. NOPE I mean this is a “I need to revaluate my morals and books I like to read” type of dark book. If you have any triggers that are listed in the book summary do not read this book, you will not have a good time.

Heads up that this story does end with a cliffhanger that has a lot of unanswered questions and, at least for me, some confusion over who last minute characters were. It kind of felt like I was reading a spin off book from another series? Could be wrong and the last minute characters mentioned could have just been to add more suspense for the next book.

The only other qualm that I had with the book was that I found that Dirk’s character to a bit robotic and cardboard in the beginning when the story was told from Shelby’s perspective. I found this odd because in other early chapters told from Dirk’s perspective he didn’t feel or sound robotic. He felt like a whole/developed character.

Overall a good read and I’ll be checking out the author’s other works since this was my first book of hers!

3 Stars!

Being new to Ms.Cole's work I've been looking forward to picking up her books! The synopsis for this one got my attention and i had to read it first.

I wasn't sure what all to expect going into this story which i liked. Shelby's journey is not an easy one. I enjoyed the fact that this story and it's characters brought out so many of my emotions throughout reading. I just struggled to fully get into this story.

With The Degradation of Shelby Ann, Ms.Cole brought the darkness!

*I volunteered to read and review a copy of this book from TalkNerdy2Me / the author*

DNF - the trigger warning made it clear that it was heavy, but I thought that halfway through the book she would get away, but things got too heavy for me. I’m giving 4/5 because the writing is very good, enough so that I couldn’t finish it considering how much Shelby goes through.

She does have many, many red flags before hand, and it annoys me to no end that even after Carter warned her to run she decided to stay, and that when she did get away she went to get her mother, who hates her, instead of running and trying to contact her mother after. And it always annoys me that the police or authorities are never an option, I know is part of the alienation he puts her through but it annoys me, but it’s something that is particular to me, it doesn’t interfere with the DNF.

I love how Emma is not afraid to write these dark romance books. I was so emotional while I read this and I couldn’t put it down. Shelby goes through so much and man, I don’t know how she keeps going. It was such a great book and I just don’t have words to say how much of a roller coaster ride of emotions she puts you through. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Dark dark

This book.. was way darker than what I expected it to be. My heart hurt for the h but in a way, her inner self was telling her not to get tangled with her now husband, things you do when you think you are in love.

Make sure you read the trigger warnings before you start this book. The creativity and trauma is incredibly intense throughout even when an antihero is in play. I also kept wanting to know what was going to happen next every moment. I can't wait for the next book now.

I NEED more of this series😭
This is beyond dark romance, creeping into the erotic horror genre. I would crawl on my hands and knees for this author to release book 2 now.
PUHlease check the TW’s before giving this a bad review.

What a great escape this was. I just love the dark and twisted reads, and boy did this fit that bill. You know sometimes you just like to read darker content, and I devoured this read.

So once I started this book I could not stop until I was finished. I just had to know what was going to happen next.

Also there may be some possible triggers, so if you have any, be cautious. I really need book two!! I would highly recommend this read!
