Rate this book
Falling in love with a young pop singer is the last thing successful songwriter Jill Griffin ever imagined. Since the tragic end of her marriage, the 40-something single mom had all but abandoned hope for a love story of her own. Then, boyband refugee Ben Fein walked into her life and stole her heart.

Second Guessing by Gail Ward Olmsted is a lovely sequel to Guessing at Normal that shouldn't be missed!

I thought this book was a fantastic addition to this series - this time with Jill falling for Ben (a much younger guy). It was a nice twist on the story of older woman, younger man with lots of sweet romance scenes in between the dramatic bits. Add in another boy band, Lynsey and teenage drama with Jill's daughter Carly and you've got a soap opera-esque women's fiction novel!

One thing that really hit me was that Carly accurately described how I feel about the loss of my own Father. Sometimes you forget they are gone, or you just forget - it's tough! I totally bonded with Carly over feeling like everything is okay, and then one day you wake up and realize (again) that he's gone. It was right on the nose!

I also really enjoyed the final newspaper/magazine articles that worked better than an epilogue (if I'm being honest). It was a nice change and was a fun glimpse into life right after the novel finishes.

One 'con' for this book was that having the names of actual recent bands and singers could potentially age the story. It wasn't a bad thing to have, because right now it's recent and makes sense. But for me, thinking about this book ending up in someone's hand in the future... will they know Maroon 5 or Nick Jonas? Will they be just as big then as they were now? The rest of this story felt like it could have aged well (maybe not the texting, but who knows where that will go in the future), but the name dropping of recent bands worries me. Older bands I can understand (I mean, they have become legends) but will those recent singers and bands be legends? That's more of a psychological question I had about this book that didn't ruin it by any means.

This was by no means an R rated novel - it's a fun, sweet yet sassy PG-13 novel. I could easily see teenagers going into this book even if it is intended to be read by adults.

Overall, this book was another fun women's fiction novel packed with romance and drama. Gail Ward Olmsted has hit it out of the park with another sweet hit! I highly recommend this novel to those who want romance (but no erotica), women's fiction or some soap opera-esque story lines.

Four out of five stars!

This is a great story that quickly drew me in and kept me turning the pages. The characters are complex, intriguing, and likable. I enjoyed how the author chose to tell the story by alternating points of view, it’s nice to see the story from both perspectives. I enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more from this author.

(Note: I received an ARC from the author and Roane Publishing.)

This was my first book by this author. There was a lot to like – a captivating storyline with an older woman/younger man trope. I’m usually not a fan of more than a 10-year age difference, but the difference here has such a real feel to it and was so believable that I fell right into it without any trouble. I loved the musical theme involved in bringing Ben and Jill together. The contrast between her developing relationship with Ben and the one she shared with her deceased husband is so different – but she struggles with the age difference. Ben is special ordered to Jill’s needs in this story that centers around loss, heartbreak, and new beginnings for new love on the horizon.

Jill is the forty-two-year-old widow of a famous rock star, and she’s also a Grammy winning composer and a mother. Preparing for a memorial concert to honor his memory, she meets a young and upcoming solo artist.

Ben has just parted ways with his former boy band and on a path for stardom as solo artist. He’s a really good guy with his feet planted solidly on the ground. He’s definitely not your normal bad boy hot rocker. When he meets Jill, he’s a goner – and that age difference is no roadblock for him.

What started off as a friendship, grew quickly into a much deeper connection that turned into a burning inferno. Their relationship may have been considered imperfectly cast, but they were perfect for each other.

Jill’s college-aged daughter is gay and involved with Emily. They are in and out of the picture quite a bit stirring up some dust here and there which adds another level to the drama level. But most of the time, the relationship between mother and daughter is solid and loving. The relationship added a nice addition to the overall theme.

The angst surrounding Ben’s “dark secret” seemed a little over-the-top and blown out of proportion in comparison to what it turned out to be. I didn’t quite understand the reasoning behind hiding it from Jill or anyone else for that matter. Ben was completely innocent and handled it maturely.

A ton of angsty ups/downs involving the extended family, drugs, marital problems, and some expected plagues that tend to follow celebrities are thrown into the mix as well. A heavy dose of mental illness also comes into play surrounding so many of the characters that the situation quickly seems a bit too redundant and melodramatic. There was a lot of abnormal, no one having escaped without heavy baggage attached to them.

Still, this book has a lot of curb appeal, but it doesn’t come without a few flaws. Loose ends left untied, e.g., cosmetic surgery before the big concert planned by Jill, but at the end of the book, she’s still complaining about her aging skin, wrinkles, etc. -- and the scheduled surgery that was once a priority was never mentioned again. The writing is not bad -- but a few too many editing issues should have been caught. Needed one last line-by-line edit before hitting publish – a few too many misspelled words and use of wrong words, i.e. potter should be putter, etc. – simple and easy fixes.

Second Guessing is a good all-round tale that deserves a look-see. It provided some laughter, along with the angst-overload, sewn up in an emotional, sweet and tender love story. And a big plus came wrapped in a perfect Epilogue. I just love a solid happily-ever-after, and this author completes the task well.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is book two of a Rockstar Romance which is a continuation of Jill Griffin's story. It starts a little after where the first book ended and it's a second chance romance story of Jill and Ben.

It starts dramatically with the news that the two are secretly dating. This is a big deal because they are both extremely successful with Ben being the hottest singer/ solo artist at the moment. Of course there is also the issue of her being in her fourties and him in his twenties. *Gasp*

Reading this made me realize that I've never read a romance story where the woman was older than the man. Anyway, this particular story is told mostly through Jill's pov occasionally interchanging with that of Ben. A lot of the book was mainly about Jill learning to love and trust again all while juggling her other responsibilities as a mom, songwriter, and friend.

There was a side plot about a stalker, but it was unnecessary considering how fast the entire thing concluded. I understand why it was there, but it shouldn't have carried on throughout the story past it been one of the reasons why Ben left his band. Speaking of unnecessary things, I really had an issue with the switching timelines in some parts of this book.

The switch to the past would happen out of nowhere in the middle of the present day. Instead of being a few paragraphs long as expected (to explain what was necessary) there would be pages of interruption in the story. I would have preferred if these trips back to the past had their own occasional chapter instead of appearing randomly.

Just with the first book, this was a clean romance. The sex scenes were implied heavily but were off the page. Reading this was an interesting experience because this is generally not the kind of book I would pick to read. In this one Jill is older so it was a bit difficult to relate to her even though I understood what she was going through. If I have to choose book one is the clear winner for me.

Excellent read. I received an ARC of this book and read through it quickly. The romance between Jill and Ben was genuine and heartfelt and I couldn't wait to read more. This book not only had romance but drama with a bit of thriller/suspense mixed in at times! I'll definitely be reading more of Gail Olmsted's books!

Second Guessing is a story about love in the celebrity world and how the media handles and sensationalizes stories that are personal.

Jill is known as the widow of a very famous singer but also as a songwriter. She is preparing a memorial concert in her husband's memory when she meets Ben, a much younger singer from a boy band who is striking out on his own. Even though the sparks fly between then, Jill is very aware of the age difference and worried about how her teenage daughter will feel about the situation. When the tabloids put their new relationship in the headlines before she even has a chance to tell her daughter, there are hurt feelings and disagreements on both sides. Will Jill and Ben be able to find love with each other despite all of the strikes against them or will they decide to call it quits?

This is an interesting love story - both the age difference and the way the story is handled in the media. I thought that it was well written and I really like the main character, Jill, and how she handled the problems in her life.

for me ... this is my 4th read or Gail's (funny thing is my Grandma Mary wanted my name to be this but mine is spelled Gayle) kind of cool. i love the cover. these characters are deep and with such realistic qualities. real life situations, believable, well written. fun writing style. a romance of 2 who are not meant to be (like from the outside you think, nahh, they won't get together??!) but just u wait??! at times funny. & yes, i got this book sent to me from Gail and a signature too ... love that. my very own book. i love hand held books (i usually read kindle reads, so it is fun to see how the old ones read?? makes you wonder where will books go in the future??) brisket ... do you smell that? maybe i was just hungry when i read the book? i can smell it now. lol!! i appreciate how authors take the time to get your visual thoughts going, memories, maybe something a friend said to you ... she has the ability to bring all those senses into her writing! romance.

I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of this book - I was so excited because I LOVED Guessing at Normal. But this books reads as a stand-alone, too. Olmstead catches you up on anything you need to know, and most of what you need to know is embedded in the story, so it all reads wonderfully. This starts out as a deeply satisfying romance between a strong, talented, nurturing rock widow and a sweet and sexy pop star. It morphs into the empowering story of a woman creating her own path in life and ends as a well-grounded thriller! This book is exciting, contemplative, and so satisfying! There is no guessing on Olmstead's part - she knows what she's doing when it comes to writing a good book!

I loved Gail Ward Olmstead's previous stories (Guessing at Normal, Jeep Tour and Driving on the Left) and couldn't wait for her latest release - and what a fabulous read! This book turns the typical boy-meets-girl story on its head - when you meet the two main characters right in the beginning they are already in love. So the question is, why would I want to continue reading the story? Well, for starters, the heroine is older than the yummie rock star hero, so my interest was piqued. And when I started picking up on clues of a possible threat to the happy-ever-after ending, I was hooked. A lovely story and one I thoroughly enjoyed.

Fabulous Story & Listen🎧 Captivating & Heartfelt!

Second Guessing
A Rockstar Romance
By: Gail Ward Olmsted
Narrated by: Gina Rogers

Gail Ward Olmsted rocks another awesome novel! I loved her book “Guessing at Normal” also a rockstar romance which is one of my favorite tropes. That book is Jill Griffin and James Sheridan’s story and if you have not read or listened to it yet I highly recommend that you do, it is a wonderful story and it will give you more insight about who Jill is and how she got to where she is in this book. That said, this book can easily be enjoyed on its own, it is a continuation of Jill’s story her life after James, all the need to know facts of her history are included so you will never feel lost. Jill continues to live in NYC and write songs, she met another special someone who she loves to spend time with but he is younger and she is reluctant about the relationship. She is also putting together a fundraiser, a tribute concert in honor her husband and the foundation in his name. I loved how everything plays out in this book, the story is cleverly plotted with plenty of drama, heartfelt and emotional moments and a wonderful romance. I liked how the story counted down to the big event, loved how Ben did not give up on Jill, she was letting her demons and insecurities from her past get the best of her. I was happy when she opened her eyes and saw that, also loved how supportive her daughter became. Gail Ward Olmsted, thank you for another wonderful story and emotional rollercoaster ride. And that was one great lineup for that benefit concert.

🎧📚🎧And for the wonderful narration, Gina Rogers is a talented narrator and versatile voice artist. She continues to bring these characters and their story to life. She does a fantastic job portraying each character, grasping their persona and playing the role with perfection. You can hear how much heart she puts into her work as she captures the characters emotions and projects them into her performance. She is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for the great listen🎧

What an interesting read full of love! Love between friends, love between family, and love between lovers. It was felt on a multitude of levels and was felt deeply. It was genuine and real. It was deep and raw. It was heartbreaking at times. Most importantly, it was a love of music that brought the cast of characters together.

This was a really good read. It was a longer read and included incredible details and descriptions. Emotions were described very well and were felt very easily by the reader. They intensified the story beyond what many might believe.

This story was told mainly in the present, but included a few scenes from the past that really tugged at your heart strings. My emotions were heavy and my heart was sad. The main character went through so much starting from her past marriage to her current love.

This story is about so much more than love though. It is about strength, and passion, and honesty. It’s about hard work and sincerity. It has an absolute incredible cast of characters that all play an equally important part of the story. They are a tight knit group of characters. They have each other’s back through thick and thin. Their actions between one another during the concert and afterwards, left me with goosebumps. It was such an absolute great feeling.

I really enjoyed reading this story. It was longer than I expected but the author did a great job telling a great story. My only complaint was the end of the story felt a bit rushed when we learned about the characters futures. I think that the author might have rushed it a bit, but I really loved the story overall.

*A Copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.

Review: At first thought, I found this book to be really fun, humorous, and enjoyable. Both the main characters, Jill and Ben, were charismatic and extremely likable. Jill is a recently widowed single mother who is in the process of finding out who she is without her musical star husband. Ben is a young man who comes across as grounded and genuinely mature for his age. In the relationship they develop after working together on Ben's solo album, both characters contribute to the relationship by helping the other one grow and develop. Gail definitely has a knack for creating a relationship that is relatable in the sense that we all are likely to question our partner and how well we know them at some point in the relationship. Another aspect I enjoyed were the side stories and the supporting characters. Gail provided a lot of information about her characters' backstories, as well as stories related to the supporting characters. This added an extra touch to each character, as well as depth to the overall plot. As far as things that took away from my experience of reading Second Guessing, the biggest issue was connecting with the characters on an individual basis. Although I found them each to be enjoyable, there were situations discussed throughout the novel that were painful and heartbreaking. However, I never felt what the characters were feeling in those moments due to lack of description. The situations were presented and glossed over, so I wish there would have been more emotional descriptions during those scenes. Additionally, there were a few scene shifts that I found hard to follow exactly which period of time the characters were in. I had to re-read a few pages to make sure I knew what time period the situation occurred in. Overall, I had a fun time reading Second Guessing for the relationship scenario, subtly steamy romance scenes, and charisma.

Let me start by saying how ready I was to listen to this. I wanted to find out how Jill moved forward and what she has been doing. There are many feelings I have about this story. I was connected to James, Jill and Alex as well as other in Guessing at Normal (Book 1). I didn’t want to change those feelings but no worries they have become enhanced. The author did a great job fleshing out all the characters. She has complimented book one perfectly.

I loved catching back up with Jill, Carly and even Alex. Heck all the characters! I liked that Jill moved on but still kept her relationship with James around. Carly was a joy! I love seeing all the similarities between her and her Dad..even Jill. I smile sappily when James sides come out. I have to say Alex surprised me! He has changed for the good!

Ben is a different character than James. He seems to think of Jill first. As time goes by I see the maturity in him, even though he is younger, that was missing in James. I loved how solid he was felt on their relationship.

There are a couple time in here that I felt really made me *feel*. That tribute concert just brought back all the feelings from book 1 (Guessing at Normal) rehashing the life of James and Jill. Tears were brought to my eyes during the video and photo montage. I was right there with Jill, Carly and his parents. The second is when Jill goes to see Pops (Brian’s Dad). He is so great and has amazing memories of the start of the band.

If you have read this far you have to know that I ended up LOVING this! The characters are intense and the story took me to places I didn’t plan on going. I would recommend reading Guessing at Normal (Book 1) first to get the full effect of this story. Better yet...listen on audio! That’s what I did. Gina Rogers does a great job and makes listening easy and enjoyable!

Being in the eyes of the public is never easy when you are a celebrity as the author show it is difficult as she spins a tale of the media and how they twist and turn things to get a story as well as how that affects the characters and their family. It is a light enjoyable read with enjoyable characters. It starts out a little slow but does pickup. There is a little danger to keep it interesting, not really sure why Ben’s secret is such a big issue. I liked the older women love story with a younger man. The author writes in a way that the two blends well together and you don’t notice the age difference so much. The story is based around Jill her lose, pain and sorrow of a lost love along with a new love that could be everything she has ever wanted.

I liked that they were both in the music business which make this more realistic. Being from the same back ground they blend well together. I really liked that Ben was more down to earth not like most men his age going wild with women. Once he sets eyes on Jill he saw no other women she is the one and he is totally lost. You have the normal drugs issues, and all the things that goes with music world including the baggage that always follows them. Jill is like most older women about aging, wrinkles etc. there are some things that are a big issue to Jill but the author doesn’t follow through and never tells how these are handled.

It is a cute read and does give a few laughs. It does have a few issues but is worth your time. It was enjoyable and at times fun.

I admit I am a huge Gail Olmsted fan. I've now read all 4 of her books (Jeep Tour, Driving on the Left and Guessing at Normal). Second Guessing is the sequel to Guessing at Normal. Before I read Second Guessing I thought Guessing at Normal was my favorite. I have a new favorite!

Second Guessing is the story of a young widow named Jill Griffin. Her late husband was an uber famous rock star, and Jill wrote all his songs. She put up with all of his indiscretions, but vows that she won't live that way again. While she's working on a tribute concert for her late husband when she falls for the headliner act, Ben Fein--who is younger than she. Jill has to navigate the world of the press picking up on every single stray detail of the love lives of stars, while also navigating how her daughter will react to the news of Jill's new love.

But then what happens when Ben goes on tour and is photographed in the tabloids with a gorgeous blonde? Will Jill be able to forgive Ben? Will her daughter get over it? Will the show go on?

Second Guessing is the perfect escape read, and Ms. Olmsted kept me up too late to read just one more chapter. I couldn't stand to put it down. I think I read it in 3 days. Olmsted, once again, hit it out of the park!

I previously read the brilliant Driving On The Left by this author and knew that again I’d be stepping outside of my comfort zone, moving more to romance as opposed to a book that provides the laughs I generally crave, but again I beyond enjoyed!

This is the story of Jill Griffin, who I’m assuming people met in Guessing At Normal which I hadn’t read. I read this book as a standalone and totally enjoyed it that way! I have to admit when I started reading I was thrilled with the music aspect, as Jill was arranging a tribute concert for her husband (from Guessing at Normal). Ben is one of the lead acts in this concert and him and Jill are soon seeing each other to the excitement of the media. I have to admit I was quite protective of Jill at first and not very trusting, and was thrilled when the author gave us Ben’s pov. The pacing in this book was excellent with something happening around each corner, bandmates in mutiny, crazed fans-the lot! I absolutely flew through the book and was very satisfied at the end. Thanks to the Lovely Ms. Ward Olmsted for the book in return for an honest review.

Gail Ward Olmsted’s Second Guessing is a contemporary romance novel with a feel-good tone and just the right amount of angst to keep the story light. Jill Griffin, a Grammy-winning songwriter, is preparing a tribute concert to honour her late Rockstar husband when she meets Ben Fein, a who recently broke away from his boy band and is heading to stardom. Their love relationship is unconventional, for Jill is forty-two while Ben is more than a decade younger, and while she struggles with the age gap, he takes it in stride, which is not the bad-boy, Rockstar persona I expected. I liked the twist! I also enjoyed the insider view of the music industry where Gail Ward Olmsted shows the commonplace in the lives of the rich and glamourous. Her characters are believable, including the stars and award winners and Jill’s somewhat snarky eighteen-year-old daughter, Carly. What I thought took away from this solid book were formatting issues. However, the story was interesting from beginning to end. Kudos to the author.

I really enjoyed "Second Guessing" by Gail Ward Olmsted. This is the first book I've read by this author, having recieved a complementary copy in exchange for an honest review. I almost didn't finish this book. I was a few chapters in... having a hard time engaging with the story and the characters and busy with life, just decided to "put the book down". I have a long list of books I want to read, so I thought why pick it up again. I gave myself a week and read a different book. I kept thinking about this book and so I thought, ok - I'll give it another try. I'm so glad I did. I really enjoyed it and time flew by as the story progressed. I was sad to see it end, but I'm glad I went back and gave it another try. The story and characters were so engaging and the storyline captivated me in such an unexpected way.
If you are a fan of contemporary romance (with the rock star theme), then this is a great book to add to your collection.
Happy Reading...enjoy!

This was a light enjoyable read, with interesting characters, who were well developed as the story unfolded. I really enjoyed the relationships between mother and daughter and how the author dealt with bringing a new young lover into the mix.

I thoroughly enjoyed the anticipation and angst built up towards the end of the book, however, I did find the beginning and lead up a little slow and at times difficult to get into.

The relationships between all of the characters were well thought out and I enjoyed the little twists and turns throughout the story, helping to build an understanding of each of the characters. On the odd occasion, I thought a little more detail could have been included to get deeper into the characters psyche.

This was an easy read, that I enjoyed and would recommend to my friends. As a first time reader of this author, I will be reading more of her work.

I really enjoy Guessing At Normal from Gail Ward Olmsted, so I was looking forward to reading the sequel. I have to say that I was impressed! It was great catching back up with Jill, Ben, Carly and the other characters, and seeing how life has been for them. Jill’s life in general is super interesting – a rock and roll widow, dating an ex-boy band singer going solo. The book is a lot more than just a romance though, and there are several deep topics touched on throughout. I would recommend you read the first book before starting this one, to get a better idea of the cast of characters (and because it’s a good one!) but I would recommend both of these. I read this fairly quickly over the weekend, and also really enjoyed the little snippets at the end, and it had me hoping for a third in the series!

Second guessing is a powerful romantic suspense that truly does keep you guessing. Was Jill’s marriage to rock star, heart-breaker James quite as happy as the paparazzi paint it? She’s the grieving widow organising a charity tribute concert with a long list of celebrity – many real – names, and daughter Carly’s crush, young Ben Fein. And, WOW, the media have the story of Jill and toy-boy lover Ben, but is it true?

The days to the concert count down, and Jill’s troubles multiply. Her family, James family, and Ben, step off the page and give the cauldron a stir. This is behind-the-scenes sexy showbiz romance at its best.

This was a good read, it kept my interest and held me from the beginning. Jill is a widow and she wrote all of her late husbands songs. He was a rock star and was not faithful, but she put up with it. She is putting together a tribute act for her late husband and falls for another rock star but will never let anyone cheat again. She is an older woman and he is the younger man, she has a daughter, and the tabloids are of course going to cause all sorts of drama.
This is her journey trying to build a new and different life while things are trying to keep her stuck where she was.

For fans of songwriter Jill Griffin, this sequel to Ward's "Guessing at Normal" could have just as easily been titled "It's Your Turn."

While planning a charity concert honoring her late husband, Jill finds romance with young rising pop star, Ben Fein. Relationships are built on trust and as the event nears, Jill's confidence in love is challenged.

Gail Ward Olmsted is one the most talented multi-genre authors writing today. I love how she reveals a different skill with each genre. Her intellect for her historical fiction novels, her wit in the Miranda Quinn thrillers, and--best of all--her heart in these rockstar romances. "Second Guessing" captured mine!

Second Guessing
A Rockstar Romance
By: Gail Ward Olmsted
Narrated by: Gina Rogers

I love finding new authors who right stories that I can sink my teeth into. This rockstar romance has more than just the hot singer(though he is!) but a story of grief and fear of starting again. We meet Jill Sheridan, a songwriter who lost her husband James. He was a singer and the team worked well together. They had their ups and downs but losing someone you love regardless of the situations can leave you empty. Jill had her daughter Carly but was not looking to begin again. Ben, a popular rockstar comes in and though younger, Jill loves spending time with him. But getting serious is not an option. She won't put her heart out there again, in the public eye plus she just can't go through losing someone again. Ben is confident, but just how long will he wait? As his tour begins, and Jill puts together a fundraiser, where will it all go? This story has a bit of everything. There is a little spice, but I loved the interactions with Carly, her pain, Jill and Ben and their relationship and just the entire background story as it affects life. It's real, and gritty with a couple that I could not help but root for! It's a good listen.

Gina Rogers is the storyteller and she dives into each character, giving them their own voice and just enough emotion to keep my heart tugging. She kept me frustrated and angry when I needed to be, and even brought tears to my eyes! I enjoyed her performance of the book!

For fans of songwriter Jill Griffin, this sequel to Ward's "Guessing at Normal" could have just as easily been titled "It's Your Turn."
