Herbert is Nabarun Bhattacharya’s most famous Bengali novel written in 1994. The story of the book revolves around the protagonist Herbert Sarkar. He is a 40-year-old queer person who believes that he has the capability to talk to the dead people. Herbert starts a business with the name Dialogues with the Dead, but has to face the consequences when an international organization declares him fraud. He commits suicide after his reputation gets stained, and the main story starts after this incident. This Sahitya Akademi Award-winning novel has been adapted into a very famous movie in 2005 by Suman Mukhopadhyay. The novel also got awarded the Bankim prize and Narasingha Das prize.

About the author

Nabarun Bhattacharya was an Indian Bengali writer deeply committed to a revolutionary and radical aesthetics. He was born at Baharampur (Berhampur), West Bengal. He was the only child of actor Bijon Bhattacharya and writer Mahashweta Devi.

He is most known for his anarchic novel, Herbert (1993), which was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award, and adapted into a film by the same name in 2005.

Nabarun is renowned as a fiction writer, and justifiably so. But he wrote poems as well and Ei Mrityu Upotyoka Aaamaar Desh Na (This Valley of Death Is Not My Country) is arguably his most acclaimed collection of poems.

Nabarun over the years consistently contributed to various little magazines, which together constitute a promising alternative mode of literary culture in Bengal that challenges the influence of big capital. It is equally noteworthy that his writing style deconstructs the gentle middle class ethos of the Bengali society. Most of his characters belong to the lower strata of existence. His fictions reinvigorate the received Bengali language with forceful idioms and expressions from the margins, which might often bombard the chaste taste of a Tagorean upper and middle class, still very much under the spell of a 19th century Victorian sensibility.

"হারবার্ট " পড়তে আমার দেরি হয়ে গেলো। অনেক দেরি। বইটার প্রতি প্রত্যাশা আকাশচুম্বী ছিলো বলা যায়। পড়লাম এবং হতাশ হলাম। গল্পের অন্তর্নিহিত বার্তা কী সেটা বুঝতে পারিনি। বোঝার জন্য গুডরিডস এর রিভিউগুলোর শরণাপন্ন হলাম। গুগল সার্চ করেও একটা রিভিউ পড়লাম। হারবার্ট প্রতারক। সে মৃতদের সাথে যোগাযোগ করার কথা বলে সাধারণ মানুষদের সাথে প্রতারণা করে। তার জীবন, জোচ্চুরি, যৌবনের গল্পে থেকে থেকে উঁকি দ্যায় নকশাল আন্দোলন। লেখক হারবার্টের বিশ্বাস,জীবন ও পরিণতির সাথে নকশাল আন্দোলন আর সমাজতান্ত্রিক বিপ্লবের উত্থান ও পতনের একটা সমান্তরাল গল্প তৈরি করেছেন। কিন্তু আমার কাছে পুরো প্রক্রিয়াটাই বেশ কষ্টকল্পিত মনে হোলো। বুঝলাম কিন্তু হৃদয় স্পর্শ করলো না। "হারবার্ট" ইজ নট মাই কাপ অফ টি।

মনে করেন যে এই ধরণের লেখা আপনি পুরা বাংলা সাহিত্যে তো পাবেন ই না, অন্য কোন দেশের সাহিত্যেও পাবেন না।

এই লেখাতে আপনি মুগ্ধ হবেন, নবারুণের নবারুণত্বে মুগ্ধ হবেন। নবারুণের উদ্বেগহীন, নিয়ম বহির্ভূত, অদ্ভুত লেখাতে আপনি মুগ্ধ হবেন, তারপর ভাববেন "নিয়মের বাইরে গেলে আসলেই তো অসাধারণ কিছু সৃষ্টি হয়!"

তার এই টিপিক্যাল, ভুতুড়ে প্রকৃতির লেখাতে দেখা যাবে এক জায়গা থেকে তিনি অন্য কোন জায়গায় চলে গেছেন। কিন্তু এই প্রত্যেকটি লাইনের বিশালত্ব অনেক, আর আপনি একটা লাইন আপনাকে কত বড় এক ভাবনার অনুভূতি সৃষ্টি করিয়েছে!!

তার এই লেখাতে যেমন ছিল মদ খাওয়া এক যুবকের হতাশা-গ্লানি, তেমন ছিল ঐ মদ খাওয়া যুবক দিয়ে আমাদের আশেপাশের অনেক কিছু নিয়ে কথা বলে ফেলা।
তার এই লেখাতে যেমন ছিল প্রেমিকের অনুভূতি, তেমন ছিল ঐ প্রেমিক দিয়ে আমাদের চারপাশের বিভিন্ন বিশৃঙ্খলার বর্ণনা

এই বইয়ের লেখার নাই কোন আলাদা ধারা, নাই কোন নিয়ম, নাই কোন সাহিত্যিক শৃঙ্খলা।

Dang! Now this is a very good book I have just read!

হারবার্টের সাথে আমার পরিচয় প্রায় চার-পাঁচ বছর আগে, পাড়ার লাইব্রেরিতে। ছোট বই, মলাটে গুটিকতেক পুরষ্কারের নাম দেয়া; তবুও বইটা কখনও ইস্যু করিনি। এর কারন সম্ববত লেখক ছিলেন আমার কাছে অপরিচিত, তাঁর বিলিতি সাহেব-টাহেব নিয়ে লেখা উপন্যাসটি সে সময়ে পড়ার আগ্রহ হয়নি।

কিন্তু  ভাবতেই পারিনি এই হারবার্ট আসলে হারবার্ট সরকার; হারবার্ট স্পেন্সার বা কোন হারবার্ট উইন্সটোন নয়৷ বাবা ভেবেছিলেন ছেলের চেহারায় হাওয়ার্ড লেসলি মার্কা সাহেবীভাব আছে। তাই নাম রেখেছিলেন হারবার্ট। ছোট্টবেলায় বাবা-মাকে হারিয়ে জ্যাঠার বাড়িতে আশ্রয় পায় সে। নকশাল ভাস্তে বিনয়ের মৃত্যুর প্রায় বছর পনের পর স্বপ্নে দেখা (!) বিনুর কাছে শুনে ঠাকুর ঘরে কালীর ছবির পেছন থেকে হারবার্ট আবিষ্কার করে বিনুর ডায়েরী। আর সেই থেকে শুরু "মৃতের সহিত কথোপকথন - প্রোঃ হারবার্ট সরকার" এর কারবার। এরপর থেকে হারবার্টের অফিসে আসে নানান লোক, জানতে চায় তাদের মৃত আত্নীয়দের কথা, কে কেমন আছেন, কোথায় আছেন। আর এসব প্রশ্নের যথাযথ উত্তর দিয়ে যেত সে, যেন অনেকটা প্রেতাত্মাদের মিডিয়াম সে। অবশ্য রেফারেন্স বই হিসাবে "পরলোকের কথা" আর "পরলোক রহস্য" বইয়ের সাহায্য নিতেও পিছপা হত না! আশেপাশের ভন্ড পীর, প্রেতের সাধক এদের বুজরুকিকে আমরা যতই ঘৃণা করি, কেন যেন হারবার্টকে ঘৃণা করা যায় না। বরং বড় বেশি মায়া করা যায়। হারবার্ট যে অন্যদের এভাবে "ঢপ" দিচ্ছে নিজেই যেন সেটা বুঝতে পারছে না। শেষে হারবার্টের পরিনতি কী হল তা এ আলোচনায় আর আনব না, বাকিটা আগ্রহী পাঠক পড়ে নেবেন।

বইটা আকারে ছোট, আশিটা পৃষ্ঠাও হবে না। কিন্তু পড়তে সে তুলনায় সময় লাগল। এর কারন সম্ভভব নবারুণ ভট্টাচার্যের লম্বা লম্বা একেকটা লাইন, উপমার পর উপমা এসব ধরে-বুঝে পড়তে গেলে এতো দ্রুত পড়া হয়ে উঠে না। কোন কোন প্যারা কয়েকবার করে পড়তে হয়েছে। আবার কাহিনীও অরৈখিক, একটা কথা পাড়া হয় পরে গিয়ে ওই কথা, ওই ঘটনা কী করে এলো তার অবতারণা। আর উপমার ব্যবহার কী বলব, হারবার্টের জ্বরের বর্ণনা লেখক এমন করে লিখছেন যেন মন বলে উঠে "আহা আমারও যদি জ্বর হত!" সুন্দর সব দৃশ্য, করুন অথচ হাস্যরসে মুখর চমৎকার একটি বই এই "হারবার্ট"।

নবারুণ ভট্টাচার্যের বিখ্যাত কবিতার বই 'এই মৃত্যু উপত্যকা আমার দেশ না'। কবি হিসেবেই তিনি সমধিক পরিচিত। তবে এর বাইরেও তিনি একজন ঔপন্যাসিক, এই তথ্যটা অনেকেরই অজানা। 'হারবার্ট' সম্পর্কে জানার আগে আমিও তাঁকে কবি হিসেবেই চিনতাম। এবার তাঁর ঔপন্যাসিক সত্ত্বার সাথে পরিচয় হলো। নবারুণ ভট্টাচার্যের কবিতায় রাষ্ট্রের প্রতি যে ক্ষোভ দেখা যায়, এই উপন্যাসেও তেমন একটা প্রভাব ছিল।

ললিতকুমার ও শোভারাণীর কোল উজ্জ্বল করে ১৯৪৯ সালে জন্ম হয় হারবার্ট সরকারের। যুদ্ধের সময় উপার্জিত অর্থ দিয়ে ফিল্ম কোম্পানিতে ঢুকেছিলেন ললিতকুমার। গাড়ি দূর্ঘটনায় ললিতকুমার ও বিদ্যুৎস্পৃষ্ট হয়ে শোভারাণীর মৃত্যুর পর কাকার বাড়িতে আশ্রয় হয় হারবার্টের। অবশ্য কাকার বাড়ি বলার চাইতে বেহাত হওয়া নিজের বাড়ি বলাই শ্রেয়। কাকা গিরীশকুমার এর নিষিদ্ধপল্লীতে যাওয়ার অভ্যাস প্যারালাইসিস রোগ তৈরি করে শরীরে। কাকাতো ভাই ধর্মলাল ও কৃষ্ণলালের সাথেই বড় হয়ে উঠে হারবার্ট। পড়ালেখা বেশিদূর করতে পারেনি। পাড়ার ছেলেদের সাথে আড্ডা দিয়ে সময় কাটে তার।

কাকাতো ভাই কৃষ্ণলালের ছেলে বিনু আশুতোষ কলেজে জিওলজিতে অনার্স পড়তো। তখন নকশাল আন্দোলনের যুগ। সেই জোয়ারে শামিল হয়েছিল বিনু। এক রাতে দেয়ালে মাও সেতুং এর গ্রাফিতি আঁকার সময় ফুটপাতের উল্টোদিক থেকে আসা পুলিশের গুলি লাগে বিনুর। হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করা হয় তাকে। সেখানেই মারা যায় বিনু। ছেলের শেষকৃত্য করেই কলকাতা ছাড়ে কৃষ্ণলাল। দীর্ঘদিন পর একদিন বিনুকে স্বপ্নে দেখে হারবার্ট। হারবার্ট স্বপ্নে বিনুর লুকিয়ে রাখা ডায়েরির কথা জানতে পারে। সত্যিই বিনুর সেই ডায়েরি পাওয়া যায় হারবার্টের কাকীর ঘরের ঠাকুরের ছবির পেছনে। সেই থেকে হারবার্টের নাম ছড়িয়ে পড়ে আশেপাশে। স্বপ্নে পাওয়া সেই ঘটনাকে কেন্দ্র করেই 'মৃতের সহিত কথোপকথন' নামে একটি চেম্বার চালু করে; যেখানে মৃত ব্যক্তিদের আত্মার সাথে যোগাযোগ করা যায়। হারবার্ট কি সত্যিই স্বপ্নপ্রাপ্তি হয়েছিল নাকি সবই ধাপ্পাবাজি? তার ব্যবসা কতদূর নিয়ে যেতে পারবে সে?

সত্যি বলতে বইটি নিয়ে মিশ্র প্রতিক্রিয়া হয়েছে। তবে ইতিবাচক দিকটাই বেশি। বইটিতে ভিন্ন ধরনের বর্ননাভঙ্গি রয়েছে। প্রথম অধ্যায়টা পড়ে অগোছালো লেখা মনে হতে পারে। তবে পরবর্তীতে আর সমস্যা মনে হয়নি। ছোট একটা বই। হাতে সময় থাকলে পড়তে পারেন। হ্যাপি রিডিং।

Well, the second read bumped my star rating to a 5, and gave me much more of an appreciation for both author and translator.

Without saying too much here, the novel begins with main character Harbart's suicide in 1992. From there it weaves its way through the story of what exactly prompted his death, introducing us to this guy who had lost his parents when he was just an infant. His aunt is the only one who seems to actually care for him, along with his nephew Binu, whom Harbart respects and admires. As Harbart gets older, he becomes caught up in forces and events greater than himself over which he has absolutely no control, a scenario which, by the way, the author mirrors in the story he tells of the city of Calcutta over Harbart's lifetime. It is the death of this beloved nephew that strikes Harbart to his core and leads to his newly-found career as someone who can speak with the dead, a vocation that will eventually lead to some unforeseen consequences of its own.

While the story itself is a great one (and I can see exactly how this would go on to become a cult novel), and Harbart is one of the most hapless but lovable characters I've come across in a long time, there is so much more to be found here. Siddhartha Deb notes in the Afterword that "Harbart's character does not encompass the novel as a whole," and that it focuses more on relationships

"between the individual and the scattered collective, between revolution and the afterlife, between cockroaches and fairies."

At the same time, "it is always about language." So true. So very, very true. The author's writing is described on the back-cover blurb as "anarchic," which describes it perfectly.

With afterword and translator's notes, this book runs to only 122 pages, but don't let that fool you. I started reading this book late one afternoon, but the 70-something pages I'd read replayed in my head over and over and over again until I actually got up at 4:30 in the morning to finish it. That's just the sort of novel it is. I will say that for many readers it may be a challenge, but sticking with it yields great rewards. It is a book I will never forget; I am only frustrated because my few words here don't even begin to do it the justice it deserves.

Magic realism at its best on the Bengali canvas!

Nabarun Bhattacharya's radically iconoclastic approach, stemming from his anti-establishment political perspective, etches an almost strangely alternative narrative voice in his fictional work.
Herbert Sarkar, an orphan sheltered at his cousin's place, grows up unwanted, in close proximity with urban nature, and develops into a hardly literate, yet strikingly sensitive person, profoundly influenced the by Naxalite movement of the seventies. "Harbart" is the tale of a man who is perched perpetually on the fringe and subconscious phenomenon, fueling an omnipresent hunger, literal and as a social metaphor, which complicates things further making a trickster of him. হার্বার্টদা শ্মশানে যায়, গল্প তবু ফুরোয় না।
A masterly handling of magic realism immortalises "Harbart" with its dark humour, slightly off mainstream Bengali novel writing.

নবারুণ সাহেবের যারে বলে অ্যাপ্রোচ, অ্যাপ্রোচটা ভালো লাগছে। মনে হইছে আমি যেই ধান্দা থেকে লেখালেখির কাজটারে দেখি, অনেকটা ঐরকম ধান্দার লেখা (সেই ধান্দার ফিরিস্তি অন্য কোনোখানে দিবো)।
ছোটো বই, কলেবর ছোটো, তেমন কোনো সুযোগ হয় না চরিত্রদের সাথে পরিচয়ের। পরিসরও মোটামুটি ছোটোই, দুই চারটা ঘটনা, একটা বুকি, এইসবই। কিছু বাছা বাছা ঘটনা, শেষে গিয়ে একটা পূর্ণতা এনে দেয়া, তেমন স্বাস্থ্য নাই বইটার। এইখান থেকে হারবার্ট সরকারকে যতখানি চেনা যায়।
কতখানি? আমার কাছে যথেষ্ট বলে মনে হইছে। ভাইপোদের মার খাওয়া, ফাতফাতাই (চন্দ্রবিন্দু কই কই বসবে মনে করতে পারছি না) উড়ে যাওয়া, প্রণব ঘোষের চিঠি ও আগমন
আচ্ছা, রাশিয়াও কী পুরাটা ভূত দেখার মত ধাপ্পাবাজি? শুধু শস্তা ভূতেদের, শুধু স্বল্পমূল্যের প্রগতির বই পড়ে আওড়ানো গল্প?
প্রশ্নটা রয়ে যায়, নবারুণ হাটে বালিশ ফাটানোর পরেও।
তাছাড়া ভাষা বলিষ্ঠ, এবং একই সাথে যেসব জিনিসকে কেউ কেউ নিরীক্ষাধর্মী আখ্যা দেয়, সেরকমও।
ছোটো বলে তেমন ঢিলেমিরও কিছু নাই। পড়ে ফেলুন। প্রথম অধ্যায়ে অবশ্য একটু খেউড় মনে হইতেও পারে। আমি শুরুতে ধরতে পারি নাই কী হচ্ছিলো, শেষে এসে ফিরে যেতে হইছিলো আমার। আপনারও লাগতে পারে।

নবারুণ তাঁর কবিতায় বলেছিল, ‘আমি উন্মাদ হয়ে যাব... যা ইচ্ছা হয় তাই করব।’ নবারুণ আসলেই তেমন। এই মানুষটা যেন একটা আস্ত উন্মাদ পৃথিবী। তাঁর সৃষ্ট চরিত্ররাও তেমন—শ্মশানেও বোম হয়ে ফোটে—ডুম ডুম গুড়ুম।

সাড়ে তিন। উপভোগ্য উপন্যাস। সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়নের ভাঙনের সাথে নকশাল আন্দোলনের নির্মম দমনকে এক সুতোয় গেঁথে লেখা। সব কিছু ভেঙে পড়ে, হারবার্ট সে ভাঙনের ব্যক্তিরূপ।

অদ্ভুত ভাষা, অদ্ভুত গঠন, অদ্ভুত চরিত্র... সবমিলিয়ে বইটাই অদ্ভুত।

রেটিং দিলাম না। কারন বইটা বুঝি নাই! কয়েক বছর পর আবার পড়ব, তখনই নাহয় রেটিং দেওয়া যাবে...

এই বই যেই সেই জিনিস না। শুরু হয়েছিল, একটা সুইসাইড দিয়ে। সেই সুইসাইডের বর্ণনা যখন শেষ হলো, ঠিক তার পরের লাইনেই মাথায় তালগোল পাকিয়ে গেলো। আর সেটা গিয়ে খুললো উপন্যাসের একদম শেষের দিকে। এই উপন্যাসের প্রাণভোমরা হলো উপন্যাসের শুরু, শেষ আর নবারুণ এর অদ্ভুত লেখনী। ম্যাজিক রিয়েলিজম, গভীর ব্যাঙ্গ, লুনাটিক গদ্য, একজন বিলু আর শেষের বিস্ফোরণ...এই সবকিছু মিলে এই বই অসাধারণ এক জিনিস। ঘুমালেই সব ঠিক হিয়ে যায় না, ঘাপলা আছে।

হারবার্ট পড়লাম। কিছু কিছু জায়গায় ঠিক ভালোমত বুঝতে পারিনি। কিন্তু পুরো বইটা পড়ে আনন্দ পেলাম। যাকে বলে সুখপাঠ্য ছিল। অনেকদিন পর, এত ভালো স্যাটায়ার কিছু পড়লাম।

এইরকম একটা ক্যারেক্টার কে কোন বইয়ের মুখ্য ক্যারেক্টার হতে পারে এইটা পড়ার আগে চিন্তা করতে পারতাম না। অনেক গল্পে এমন ক্যারেক্টার থাকলেও, যেহেতু মুখ্য চরিত্র তাকে একটু গ্লোরিফাই করেই লেখকরা। কিন্তু এখানে হারবার্ট অশিক্ষিত, ভন্ড, কিছুটা বোকা এবং আরো কিছু। তারপরও তার উপর রাগ হয় না। উল্টো শেষে হারবার্টের অসহায়ত্ব এবং ভঙ্গুর অবস্থা দেখে মায়া হয়।

কিছু বছর পর বইটা অবশ্যই আবার পড়তে হবে আরো ভালোমত বোঝার জন্য।

This slim novella is deceptive. It packs a punch. Quite literally. On the surface it is the story of a hapless character who seems to drift through life in a crowded cockroach infested inner city Calcutta community. Inspired by a dream and a couple of books on the occult, he makes his living communicating with the dead. The troubled stream of poor Herbert's life is a commentary on much more—on personal, political, national, and historical terms—but told in language that is vibrant, delightfully ribald, very much alive with the stench and passion of everyday life. Sunandini Banerjee's translation is spectacular!

If you have ever spent time in Calcutta, as I have in recent years, it may even make you a little homesick (even if it's not your home).

নবারুণের হিউমার, সার্কাজম, পেলাস ম..মম..মমম্যাডনেস ককটেল, যার প্রতি চুমুকে হারবার্ট সরকারের ক্ষ্যাপামি এবং যন্ত্রণার পাঞ্চ।

"কীভাবে বিস্ফোরণ ঘটবে এবং তা কে ঘটাবে সে সম্বন্ধে জানতে রাষ্ট্রযন্ত্রের এখনও বাকি আছে।"

A specific reading taste is needed to love this cult classic. I evidently don't possess it. I certainly did not understand what the actual message is in this story. While the Harbart's tale is touching, the language and dark humor were not my cup of tea.

হারবার্ট মৃত আত্মাদের সাথে কথা বলতে পারে । প্রায়ই চিলেকোঠার অন্ধকার ঘরে রবীন্দ্রনাথ, নেহেরু ও অন্য অনেকের সাথে কথা বলে । আর সেই সব কথা বাড়ির বাইরে কারো সাথে বললে লোকে তাকে পাগল হিসেবে আখ্যা দেয় । একবার হঠাৎ এলাকার পুকুরে একটা মেয়ের লাশ ভেসে ওঠে । হারবার্ট তার সাথে মৃত্যুপর কথা বলে জানতে পারে ভিক্টিমের সাথে কি হয়েছিলো । সে যখন ঘটনা ও সংশ্লিষ্ট কিছু নাম প্রকাশ করে তখন তাকে ধরেবেঁধে নেয়া হয় মানসিক হাসপাতালে । হারবার্টের সাথে যেন পুরো সমাজটাই একটা মানসিক রোগী ।
আদি-ভৌতিক বলে কিছু থাকলে গা ছমছমে একটা গল্প ।

Even at 100 pages (the remaining pages in this edition are an afterword and copious footnotes), the story is longwinded and not terribly noteworthy. Not sure if it's the translation or the original, but many sections are hard to follow. Not a clue why this is considered a classic - the entire thing is just very slight.

বাংলা পাল্প সাহিত্যে টুকি টাকি ডার্ক হিউমার ব্যবহার করা হলেও মূল ধারার লেখায় এর ব্যবহার প্রথম দেখলাম। আর সাথে আছে
উপরি পাওনা হিসাবে আছে ম্যাজিক রিয়ালিজমের ব্যবহার। বইটিতে লেখক নবারুণ ভট্টাচার্য মূলত অদ্ভুত এক ফিউশন সৃষ্টি করেছেন।

এখন ডার্ক হিউমার এবং ম্যাজিক রিয়ালিজম কাকে বলে?

এ দুটোই বুঝাতে অনেক বিস্তারিত আলোচনা প্রয়োজন কারণ দুটি দিকের প্রয়োগে আছে বৈচিত্রতা। তবে খুব সংক্ষেপে বলতে গেলে,

ডার্ক হিউমারের আরেক নাম ডার্ক কমেডি। খুব ভয়াবহ এবং মর্মান্তিক ঘটনাকে লেখক কমেডির মাধ্যমে প্রকাশ করে থাকেন কিন্তু এর মূল ব্যাপারটা হেয় হয় না কিংবা তার আবেদন হ্রাস পায় না।

অন্যদিক ম্যাজিক রিয়ালিজমের আরেক নাম পরাবাস্তবতা। বাস্তব পার্থিব কাঠামোর সঙ্গে ফ্যান্টাসির উপাদান মিলে তৈরি হয় জাদুবাস্তবতা। এটি এমন একটি জাদুময় অনুভূতি, যাতে মনে হবে যেকোন কিছুই ঘটা সম্ভব।

মাত্র ৮০ পৃষ্ঠার হারবার্ট বইটিতে ডার্ক হিউমার আর ম্যাজিক রিয়ালিজমের সফল ব্যবহার করেছেন লেখক। তাই বর্তমান সাহিত্যের জনপ্রিয় এই দুটি উপাদানের স্বাদ নিতে এই বইটি হতে পারে ভাল একটি মাধ্যম। এই ছোট্ট বইটি পেয়েছেন তিনটা বড় বড় পুরস্কার। অকাদেমি, বঙ্কিম এবং নরসিংহদাস পুরস্কার।

মূলত এক ব্যক্তির আত্নহত্যা দিয়ে শুরু হয় গল্পটি। নাম হারবার্ট সরকার। আমাদের পদবী এক। পড়তে গিয়ে মনে হল এই চরিত্রটির সাথে আরও মিল আছে। বাবা এবং পরে মায়ের মৃত্যুর পরে অবহেলায় হারবার্টের শৈশব থেকে যৌবনে পা রাখার অংশটুকু এই উপন্যাসের মূল ঘটনার দিকে নিয়ে যাবার সিড়ির কাজ করে।

বিনু নামের একটি চরিত্র আছে বইটিতে। খুব ছোট কিন্তু প্রচণ্ড শক্তিশালী চরিত্র। একেবারে যেন নাড়িয়ে দিয়ে যায়। বিনু হারবার্টে ভাইয়ের ছেলে। বৃদ্ধ জ্যাঠাইমার পরে দ্বিতীয় ব্যক্তি বাড়ির যে হারবার্টকে মানুষের মর্যাদা দিয়েছিল। নকশালপন্থী বিনুর অকাল মৃত্যু হারবার্টে মাসনিক জগতে এক প্রচণ্ড পরিবর্তন করে দিয়ে যায়। হারবার্ট মরার সাথে যোগাযোগ করিয়ে দেবার ব্যবসায় নামে। সাইনবোর্ড টানায়- "মৃতের সহিত কথোপকথন।" তারপর থেকে হারবার্ট ভয় পেতে থাকে কিংবা ...

হারবার্ট তার সুইসাইড নোটে লিখেছিল মাত্র তিনটি লাইন,

"চৌবাচ্চার তেলাপিয়া গঙ্গাসাগরে চলল।
দোবেড়ের চ্যাং দেকবি, দোবেড়ের চ্যাং
দেকাব? ক্যাট ব্যাট ওয়াটার ডগ ফিশ ।"

কি কিছু বুঝলেন না? বইটা পড়ুন। লেখক এখানে ডার্ক হিউমার ব্যবহার করেছেন। হয়তো পড়ার পর বুঝতে পারবেন এই ফিচলে লেখা কয়েকটা লাইনের মাঝে লেখক পুরো গল্পটাকে ঠেসে ঢুকিয়ে দিয়েছেন।

কাহিনীর দিক থেকে বিচার করলে কাহিনী সামান্যই। হারবার্ট সরকার নামে এক ভাগ্যহত যুবকের কাহিনী। নিজের অজান্তেই হারবার্ট একটি মিথ্যে অলৌকিক ক্ষমতা জাহির করে ফেলেছিল। তারপর যা হয়, মুখে মুখে সেই কাহিনী ছড়িয়ে পড়েছিল আশেপাশে। ভাগ্যের চক্রে বারবার মার খাওয়া হারবার্ট, অশিক্ষিত, অবহেলিত, নিগৃহীত হারবার্ট তার মিথ্যে অলৌকিক ক্ষমতার জালে লোক ঠকানোর ব্যবসা শুরু করেছিল। তবে ভাগ্য তার বরাবরই খারাপ, যুক্তিবাদী সমিতি তার জারিজুরি ফাঁস করে দেবার পর হারবার্ট আর নিজেকে ধরে রাখতে পারে নি, মোকাবেলা করতে পারে নি সত্যকে তার বানানো মিথ্যে দিয়ে। তবু হারবার্টের জন্য মায়া লাগে। বইয়ের মূল আকর্ষণ তবু নবারুণ ভট্টাচার্যের লেখনী। বাস্তবতা, পরাবাস্তবতার মিশেলে লেখা আধপাগলা হারবার্ট সরকারের করুণ জীবনের বর্ণনা এই বই। পড়ে মনটা কেমন খারাপ হয়ে গেল।

Ω 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐬: In Nabarun Bhattacharya’s audacious Bengali classic, 'হারবার্ট,' we meet Harbart Sarkar—an alcoholic, a failed lover, an orphan, a misfit, and most importantly, a "posthumous listener" in a decaying 1990s Kolkata. He starts a business relaying messages from the dead to the living. His modest enterprise earns him popularity and ridicule in equal measure. But behind the absurdity lies a biting commentary on the decay of society, political disillusionment, generational trauma, and the brutal machinery of urban life.
And then Harbart commits suicide.

💭 𝐌𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: There are books that simply defy easy explanation, and Nabarun Bhattacharya's masterpiece 𝐻𝑒𝑟𝑏𝑒𝑟𝑡 is definitely one of them. It's a short read, yet it demands a different kind of patience, a willingness to surrender to its unique rhythm. As I dove into its pages, I often found myself marveling at the writer’s exceptional sense of humor. Bhattacharya's storytelling approach is entirely unconventional. He weaves a narrative steeped in riddles and enigmas—a labyrinth that, for an unseasoned reader like myself, certainly takes some time to fully grasp at first. The sheer brilliance of his metaphors and ornate language often left me awestruck. And then there are those moments, sprinkled throughout, where his subtly sarcastic prose conjures a faint, knowing smile on my lips.

What makes Herbert truly stand out is its defiance of conventional Bengali literary trends. Nabarun Bhattacharya was, at his core, a staunch communist, and that influence permeates 𝐻𝑒𝑟𝑏𝑒𝑟𝑡 like the faint glow of a setting sun. It's never an overwhelming blaze, but a subtle, pervasive light that colors the entire book. It also speaks to the idea that while people may die, their essence, their spirit, endures. Revolutionaries may fall, but the revolution itself never perishes. The concluding lines of the book, which can be interpreted as an indirect political lesson, are particularly touching and resonant.

However, 𝐻𝑒𝑟𝑏𝑒𝑟𝑡 isn't without its challenges—its dense, metaphor-heavy prose and non-linear narrative demand slow, careful reading and more maturity from me. There were paragraphs I had to revisit multiple times to understand them properly. The book's deceptive brevity (under eighty pages) belies its complexity, as Bhattacharya's winding sentences and delayed revelations create a deliberate dance with time that may overwhelm those unfamiliar with Bengali socio-politics or readers craving closure. But these aren't flaws—they're features. Bhattacharya wrote a book that demands active engagement, one that refuses to comfort or console.

My final thought is this: 𝐻𝑒𝑟𝑏𝑒𝑟𝑡 is not for those seeking a straightforward plot or easily digestible themes. It's filled with literary complexity, dark humor, and a narrative that offers no easy answers. It challenges, it provokes, and it lingers. Ultimately, it's a book that proves literary fiction can be both intellectually challenging and emotionally devastating.

খুব ছোটবলায় মা-বাবাকে হারায় হারবার্ট।জ্যাঠাইমার স্নেহ ব্যতীত একরকম সবার অবহেলায় বড় হতে থাকে সে।অবশ্য পাড়ার ছেলেরা তাকে বিশেষ পছন্দ করে।একদিন পুরনো তোরঙ্গে ২টি পুরনো বই খুঁজে পেল সে।সেগুলো পড়ে লোক ঠকানোর ব্যবসায় নেমে পড়লো। তার দাবী সে মৃতের আত্মাদের সাথে যোগাযোগ করতে পারে।"মৃতের সহিত কথোপকথন "ব্যানার ঝুলিয়ে অফিস খুলে বসলো এবং বিভিন্ন লোকজনদের মিথ্যে বলে ঠকাতে লাগলো।
একদিন এল প্রভাবশালী সুরপতি মারিক।তিনি হারবার্টের ব্যবসাকে বড় করে দেওয়ার প্রতিশ্রুতি দেন বিনিময়ে সেও আয়ের অর্ধেক নিবে।প্রতিশ্রুতিমাপিক সে বিভিন্ন পত্রপত্রিকায় হারবার্টের অলৌকিক ক্ষমতা (!) নিয়ে লেখে।খবর দেখে লোকজনসমেত প্রণব ঘোষ এলেন বুজরুকি ফাঁস করে দেওয়ার উদ্দেশ্যে।পুলিশের ভয় দেখায় হারবার্টকে।
ভয় পেয়ে হারবার্ট আত্মহত্যা করে।
তোষক-বালিশসহ যখন তাকে শশ্মানচুল্লিতে প্রবেশ করানো হলো তখনই শশ্মানে বোমা ফাটার মতো বিস্ফোরণ হলো!
পরে জানা গেল হারবার্ট যে ঘরে থাকতো সেখানে আগে থাকতো তার ভাইয়ের ছেলে বিনু( নকশাল আন্দোলনের কর্মী) কোনো পরিকল্পনার অংশ হিসেবে সে তোষকের ভিতরে ডিনামাইটের স্টিক ঢুকিয়ে রাখে।

সাধাসিধে গল্প হলেও একটি অন্তর্নিহিত বার্তা আছে। কখন, কীভাবে বিস্ফোরণ ঘটবে বা কে ঘটাবে তা জানতে রাষ্ট্রতন্ত্রের এখনও বাকি আছে।

যারা আমার মতো লেখকের লেখার সাথে পূর্বপরিচিত নন তাদের ক্ষেত্রে গল্পের ভাষা নিয়ে শুরুর দিকে কিছুটা সমস্যা হতে পারে।
** গল্প অবলম্বনে একটি চমৎকার সিনেমাও আছে।

The book starts with the discovery of the suicide of the protagonist, and then backtracks as to how the situation arose. This was my first experience of Bengali literature, a cult novel recently translated, masquerading as ‘horror’ when actually it’s far more than that. Prior to his death, Harbart conducted a business from his bedroom but with a signboard outside that read, in the manner of Calcutta neighbourhood stores,

Conversations with the Dead. Prop: Harbart Sarkar.

Rather than delving into the supernatural, this is a story about a young man, orphaned from early childhood and cut off from other family, trying to find his way in 1990s Calcutta. There’s a good twist in the last pages also. If this is anyway typical of Bengali fiction, which I suspect it isn’t, I want more.
Anything misunderstood or lost in translation is explained in the afterword, which shouldn’t be missed. Rather than simply a translation, Sunandini Banerjee has a real passion for this and has sort it out and brought it to the English-speaking audience. It deserves success.

It wasn’t a book so much as a bomb, assembled with precision and intent..you can hear it ticking as you read, before it explodes in your hands.

নবারুণ মৃত্যু উপত্যকার কবি হলেও তিনি গল্প-উপন্যাস লিখেছেন।

হারবার্ট-এ আমাদের সামনে হাজির করেন এক জ্যোতিষীকে। যে স্বপ্নের মধ্যে থেকে খোঁজ পেয়েছিল অলৌকিকের।
এখানে কেবলমাত্র সরলরেখায় হারবার্টের গল্প আমরা পড়ি না। নকশাল আন্দোলনকেও মেলানোর চেষ্টা দেখা যায়, যদিও বেশ আলগা বা বিচ্ছিন্নই থেকে গিয়েছে বিষয়টা।
