I had no idea where this story was taking me from the very start. And I LOVE when an author can transport me through such mystery! The pages kept turning despite my eyes growing tired. I had to keep reading to find out what would happen next. Frankel has quite an imagination, and it comes alive through his descriptive writing. If someone told me I'd end up caring for a character who is a hybrid cat-girl, I would've laughed. But, what do you know? I did. I love how Frankel makes his characters so ...more

This book was excellent.
Starting with the cover, which I still can't stop looking, to the perfectly written and edited words, to the plot and characters. Everything was just amazing.
From the beginning I found myself liking Harry, the description of his past was a very important subject, being an only child and victim of bullying, it marked his personality and played a significant rol in the story.
Now, Anastasia, if I find myself in her position, I wouldn't mind being half cat and half woman, but

A Reader’s Catnip!

I metaphorically rolled head-over-tail while reading J.S. Frankel’s Book 1 of the ‘Catnip’ series.

Sophisticated YA, Sci-Fi interwoven with realism. The reader chases protagonist, Harry Goldman, as he hightails it from Manhattan to the Catskills.

Harry is your typical skinny, bullied, geeky, highly intelligent computer nerd whose proficient research and experimentation with DNA manipulation yields a transgenic breakthrough. This in itself puts Harry’s life in danger, as well as

WOW what an A~MAZ~ING book cover I was hooked immediately. The blurb caught my attention too, having at one point worked in the research industry in transgenics myself (on a very small and regulated project).

Teenager Harry Goldman is a science nerd, he loves researching into transgenics and DNA. Unfortunatley he finds himself in trouble and ends up in jail but the FBI release him on the condition that he assist them find a mutant cat girl, possibly a Russian spy

Really great young adult, new adult or adult (!) fast paced action packed sci-fi thriller that's hard to put down. Love the main character strong male lead. The level of detail and 'Miss Kitty' cat quirks are great. Unique plot - would make a great movie.

My oh my what a journey! This book is absolurely amazing! The main character, as well as all the supporting characters, are so real you can not help but to connect with them. I really took my time reading this authors' gift. And that is what it is, a "gift". Full of action, intrigue and wonder, This gift has many themes, but my favorite is: "Everything in life is a gamble". Thank you Jesse. Forge on! ~Linie Sherrod

Just as a hypothesis develops into a theory before becoming a fact so unfolds the story of Catnip.

Harry was a child prodigy who simply didn't fit in at school and rather work on developing his own scientific thoughts. His father worked in transgenics and his mother in chemistry so it all came second nature to him. He was working on his own thing in college labs from a young age; doing has own thing, working with the machines and figuring out formulas that even the professors didn't have the kno

It's been a minute... far too long a time since last I had this much a good time reading a book. A story has the chance of striking a chord of interest... perhaps even a good line or two of dialog between characters... but Frankel wraps me up in an "I Don't Know" Blanket and adds to the number of good-time reads I've had.

You know an author is having an effect on you when you read a Prologue, that isn't a prologue... it's Chapter One... but it's TOTALLY a prologue! Three characters are

I was given a free copy of Catnip by the lovely author J. S. Frankel. This has in no way influenced my rating of the novel.

Just like a cat, Catnip captured my attention from beginning to end. It is centred around teen genius Harry Goldman who theorises about cross-genetic transmutations for fun. Sounds complicated, right? Well, it turns out someone has been putting the transgenic theories into practice, and thus Harry meets Anastasia, cat-girl. They're on an adventure against time, Feds and a mo

J.S. Frankel

Let me just start by saying that if the words "science" and "genius" don't make any sense when put next to each other, I completely relate. Science has never been, and will most likely never be, my thing. However, reading this book and words like "trangenics" and "DNA helix" and understanding what they meant made me feel like a genius.

In Catnip, each of the words that could be seen as confusing are explained so well that the story isn

What a fabulous book!
Whilst weaving a 'tail' of science and madness, JS Frankel also raises some poignant questions.
The cat-girl is incredible, her journey no less so.
Anastasia with amnesia; lol

I don't want to say too much for fear of spoilers.
But transgenics is the theme, with a slight love story running alongside. Plenty of action, and the men in black suits.

Really well written; give it a go, you won't be sorry.

I just finished reading Catnip by Jesse Frankel, a definite 5-star Young Adult novel. I will honestly say it is a book unlike any other I have read. I would categorize it as a unique work of Young Adult Science Fiction, which is not a genre I frequently read, but the promise of a sweet and honest, if not slightly awkward, teenage romance beneath the intricately detailed science fantasy plot, intrigued me. Sometimes I start reading a book for one reason, which for me is usually my desire to read ...more

It’s been a while since I started reading a book that grabbed my attention from the very beginning; some YA novels are too ‘young’ for me in terms of general content of the books but ‘Catnip’ had my mind working on the perils of genetic manipulation and modification and coming up with my own list of ‘what ifs.’ A great topic to spark my nerdy imagination! What happens when a young, genetic science genius meets the terrifying product of research that was meant to heal?

Oh My God! This was definitely my favorite book from J. S. Frankel so far, although I loved his past works. But, seriously, it was so original and full of action and I absolutely loved the whole espionage intrigue. Absolute work of genius!

You have mad scientist, mutants, FBI agents, sewers. What more do you need for a perfect plot? I was truly amazed at the intricacy of the story.

As usual, I loved the hidden message that all his books have. This time it was: no one should play God. It started

I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review. The concept interested me and I contacted the author and volunteered to review it, even though this is not my normal reading genre.
This delightful story hooked me in within the first few pages--the homeless man scene could have been a tad bit shorter--and kept me interested. This is the first book I've read by this author, and I think he's succeeded quite well in portraying a main character who is at once very different from his teenage peers, but also an ordinary sufferer of teenage 'afflictions'. Harry is a prodigy, which makes him think like an old man on many areas of life. He speaks like someone far older too, which would make for unrealistic dialogues if it wasn't for the genius part. I got minor flashbacks to the good old TV days of Dr Doogie a few times duri ...more

Author copy for fair review.
A very promising start to the series and one I will definitely be reading more of. This is surprising as I am not really a big YA fan, but I did enjoy Catnip. The characters were people I could empathize with, despite one of them being a boy genius and his love interest a genetic engineering experiment. I appreciated their moments of awkwardness, the energy felt just right. They were well rounded and interesting and it was easy to like them. Vibrant, clever, and funny

I have read three of Jesse Frankel's books and I must say, I've enjoyed every one of them.
Catnip is no different. It is such an original story. I've never read one quite like it.
The characters are fun-loving characters that everyone can relate to. They talk among themselves like all young people would. I especially loved the way that Harry asked Anastasia to be his girlfriend. He asked in such a way that I could picture my son doing it the same way. It made me giggle. (in a good way!)

Harry is introduced to Anastasia, who is the product of similar illegal transgenic research, and being held captive by the FBI. Of course, things get out of control and Harry must find a way to save Anastasia and himself.

I have to admit I'm picky with books. If it doesn't hold my attention in the first couple of pages usually I wont finish it. However this was not the case with this book.

I bought it on the 23rd of this month started reading it around 10pm. I literally could not put it down...I was hooked, mesmerized and in the story itself after the first page. I ended up staying up all night and finishing it at 620 in the morning. Yeah, it was that good.

Hello Jesse,

Here's what I want to write about your book

Jesse's 'Catnip' holds cool, snappy dialogue. Great chapters that slide together, are short for those younger generation ADD quicksilver minds. A cleverly, ingenious plot holds credence in storyline, whilst appealing to the misspent emotions, and perspectives, of a captive audience. Mainly amusing, focusing on dialogue capture, this first in the series explains why some of us need fantasy, and imagination, to revisit our halcyon days of you

My girlfriend bought this book and couldn't put it down. And she finished it pretty much in one day. She literally wouldn't shut up about it. She posted about it on Facebook, Twitter, and her blog that she is never on. So it had to be good right?? So I stole her iPad and began reading it myself. I too couldn't put it down. I too finished it in one day. Amazing to say the least. It has everything you would want in a book. It keeps you hooked and always wanting more. Recommend? Definitely

Harry Goldman is a young scientist in jail for researching mixing the DNA of animals with those of humans. When the FBI finds a girl who also happens to be half cat, they ask for his help.
Catnip is a fast-paced, entertaining read. While technically YA, it's a suitable read for adults as well.

If I had to look hard for a flaw, Anastasia goes from vicious to nice a little quickly, but I think it's probably the right way to do it, given the intended target audience. I look forward to reading the s

J. S. Frankel does a great job in showing the world how talented he is at telling a tale with Catnip. This young adult, science fiction romance is well written and action packed. The ending is bittersweet but definitely leaves you wanting more. I look forward to the next installation.

Again I was intrigued by a cover, which is very unique! Harry Goldman is a nerd with two brilliant parents. His research on transgenetics with the idea of curing cancer gets him in trouble legally. He ends up locked up. Although he was working for the greater good, it seems someone was not. When a woman/cat is captured, the Feds know exactly who to get to figure it out and where he could be found.
The Feds want to know what she is and how she came to be but before any answers were forth coming...
