Interesting book but written with a catholic slant making the work of the different people more social than spiritual. It was still nice hearing of these different people who surrendered their lives.

I loved every single story in this book. Many of these tales I had never heard of and I would like to think I know a lot of missionary biographies. Some of the stories are pretty gruesome, so if reading to children beware.

Seems to focus on struggles or their works, rather than grace.
I struggled to rate this and I think I figured out why: I didn't want to read about struggles right now because in these pandemic days everyone is struggling in one form or another! I originally wanted to read this in the hopes that would hear about God's providence making peoples lives better. Instead I read how people, good people, struggle and work. Concepts like grace and love were mentioned but I don't remember either being a dominant theme. If you have a strong affection for Catholic theology you would most likely enjoy this book. If you are firm believer in the love and grace of God, you just might walk away from this book feeling "dried up and withered" . I would like to close with a thought: Any theology that centers on man because nothing more than religous anthropology.

What an inspiration, of men and women who gladly gave their all for Christ! Many were martyred or treated horribly for their faith, and others lived long lives full of service for our King. The descriptions of how some were treated were heartbreaking to hear, but what a rich heritage they left behind. Truly encouraging to be reminded of the One Treasure that matters most in our lives, and how all else pales before Him.
At the end, one man tells the Muslims he is witnessing to that they worship the same God he does. And no more is said about why he said that. I would hope he did clarify his statement, but that information is not given. Added to that, I might not fully agree with every facet of the author’s theology, but all in all, an interesting book.

Amazing

It is hard to imagine the trials and hardships these men and women of God endured for the lost souls of the world. We tend to think of these things happening only in the early days of the church. May God give His church today the burden these saints had for the lost in our own neighborhood.

The Book of Missionary Heroes

This is a somewhat unique book, written 100 years ago, yet telling stories that are timeless. I doubt that I would have read these stories from another source. This read was enjoyable.

Mission Stories

Covering missionary heroes from Paul to the early 20th Century, the storytelling ranges from captivating to absolutely flat. There are tons of folks here I never hear of, and appreciated the history, if not the narrative.

This was not an easy book to rate; however it is an easy book to review. The book was designed to be read aloud at a campfire at a Christian camp in the US or the UK, with a group of children or early teens. When it was written, the book would have been outstanding. The stories are true, engaging, exciting and uplifting. This is exactly the type of book I would want to read to my children if I was living 100 years go.

In the twenty first century there are a few problems with the book due to the shift in the culture. It is no longer acceptable to pretend that white Anglos are a superior race who has become God’s gift to the world. Yet, this is what the book continually states and so I found myself cringing while reading the otherwise amazing missionary stories. As a result, I really cannot recommend the book. This is a shame since the missionary stories are worth repeating in an edited form.

Many of the stories are of "not so famous" missionaries, yet very much-needed insight into what missionaries face as they serve the Lord. Most people only have romantic notions about missionary life.

I chose this rating because it was passionately written but good literature by today's standards. However I would recommend it to who have aspirations for missionary work.

This is a great public domain book that will really open your eyes to some of the hardships missionaries have been going through for many years. It is a brief account of several different lives and instances and is written in a way that you could use each chapter as a devotional if you wished. Very good book.

caveat: at the end Archibald Forder tells the Muslims that he worships the same God they do. What did he mean by this? The author didn't clarify. So that was a weird ending to a really interesting and exciting book.

A Mini History of Missionaries.

These are the people they don't teach you about in school. An encouraging and enlightening read for all Christians especially for those interested in missionary history. Worth the read.

Lovely Survey of Missionaries Throughout Historuly

I enjoyed learning of many 18th and 19th century missionaries of whom I had not heard. The author also weaves many of them together from pioneers to those who stepped in the same "sand" generations later.

Soul searching

This is one book that really stirred up my soul in many ways. Reading story after story of different people sacrificing ALL they had & more for something greater than themselves has left an everlasting mark on me. Highly recommended for anyone looking for something bigger in life to purpose to, for the sake of the Kingdom.
