The final installment of the spellbinding first-person POV romantic urban fantasy series by NY Times and USA Today bestselling author Michelle M. Pillow. The series is complete and ready to binge!
I was supposed to stay dead. That’s the one thing everyone agreed on.
One bite. One drink. That’s all it took to rip apart what was left of my humanity. Now there’s a war raging under my skin, werewolf venom battling vampire blood. I’m stuck in the middle, no longer mortal… and not quite anything else.
Costin says he saved me. That he did what he had to do. But what he really did was break his promise. He turned me into a monster.
And still, I want him.
Worse, I need him. His blood. His strength. His control. But every time I give in, I lose more of myself. The hunger is growing. So is the rage.
Everything’s unraveling. My body. My past. The fragile peace holding the supernatural world together. And the only thing more dangerous than what I’ve become… is what I might do next.
Now, I’m out of time. If I don’t figure out what I am, and fast, I’ll destroy everything I’ve been trying to protect.
Including the master vampire willing to burn the world for me.
Tropes You’ll • Monster Girl Energy • Transformation Gone So Wrong • Enemies-to-Lovers • Slow-Burn Dark Romance • Forbidden Magic & Supernatural Politics • Found Family, Deadly Betrayal • Heroine Who Refuses to Die

This is it—the final book in the Merely Mortal series. Tamara Devine’s journey is almost over, but fate isn’t done with her yet.
💀 A ritual that should have ended everything—gone horribly wrong. 🖤 A choice between love, power, and survival. 🔥 A final battle that could change everything.
I can’t wait for you to see how this all ends. Writing this series has been an adventure, and this book? Let’s just say Tamara isn’t going down without a fight.
Over the series, Tamara was put through the wringer more times than could be possible for a "mere mortal", until she was left on the brink of death in one huge hook in the previous book.
Now, she has to learn to live with her new abilities, and the wringer is never too far from her, but so are Costin, Astrid, Anthony, and many we did not expect to meet as friends (or that we think of as foes, depending on our point of view).
Most of all, we are treated to TONS of action, making this last book an absolute page-turner!
Phew. This book. This series. I loved it and loved it and loved it some more. It grabbed me from the first page and kept me mesmerized and hooked until the last syllable. I was equally desperate to read it all at once and also to savor it and make it last. The story weaves together all the best things - exhilarating adventure, palpable tension, unexpected twists, dangerous moments, deep emotions, and swoony romance. Expect a twisty windy roller coaster of a story from the first page to the last because instead of a slow ratcheting up of the danger and suspense, the story starts with intensity and just never lets up. It picks up exactly where the last book ended - Tamara is bitten by the Alpha wolf Thane and to prevent her death from the werewolf virus, she is infected by the vampire virus by her lover/boyfriend, master vampire Costin. Tamara is from an ancient magical lineage but she was simply mortal which made her vulnerable until she is transformed into a wolf/vampire/magic hybrid making her unstable. In this story, she continues to be portrayed as a real, relatable, complicated and likeable heroine who has flaws and scars, but is really just trying to do her best as a messy being in very messy supernatural situations. Despite Tamara’s best efforts to live a boring life throughout the series, she is drawn into ever more dangerous plots and the evil machinations of the supernatural world and its players. Hers is the story of a damaged and bruised but not broken being who finds her way by owning her choices, recognizing her scars, embracing all of her parts, and deciding to make her own path. It’s a story about the power of choice and Tamara ultimately finds her place and her true self in the journey. The flow of the entire story was so well done and managed to keep my attention completely on the story - danger and suspense followed by brief periods of romance and emotional drama before the cycle starts again. This final book beautifully wraps up all the storylines from the first three books and resolves all the evil plotting of the bad guys. I simply loved Tamara’s gradual transformation as the series progressed. And I have loved this series and am sorry that it is finished - time for a re-read.
Note - while this can be read as a standalone as there is enough back story woven into the book that you will not be lost, do yourself a favor and read the books in order starting with book one. It will add richness and greater dimension to the storyline and the books are fantastic.
This is the finale of the series. In it, Tamara Devine who was once a mere mortal, is now a hybrid. Being bitten by the Alpha werewolf, then Costin turned her to try and save her life. So now wolf & vampire fight inside her all of the time. Giving Draakmar’s amulet to Diana saved the little girl’s life. She had loved Paul, Diana’s father in the first timeline, that had been reset (book 1). But, knowing that it destroyed his life more than once was upsetting to Tamara or Tam. Conrad, the ghost of her dead mortal adopted brother has been ‘captured’ by Leviathan, a necromancer. Anthony is her half-brother (share the same father) and is the heir to Devine fortune, and magic. Costin loves Tam and vice versa. Elizabeth is Costin’s evil sire and sister. Tam has to learn how to control herself especially her emotions as if she loses control of that, she could kill someone. The magical Council steps in and puts her through tests and hoops to see how much danger the world is in from her. That part drove me crazy. Plus, the wolves claim that since their Alpha bit her before dying, she should be there for them. Sully is fun and drives ya crazy throughout the book. Tam is now a Power- by being a hybrid as well as a Devine thru blood. Everyone wants a piece of her. I never liked Uncle Mortimer, but he goes above and beyond on the jerk factor in this book. I’d use stronger words but, then I wouldn’t be able to give the review. lol. Astrid totally surprised me a lot in this book. Learning about the Council and the power struggles between the different factions was fascinating and learning more about Tam’s father just made me angry. I really love Zephronis in this book. He is amazing and his insights are truth incarnate. Learning more about Tam’s birth mother, Lorelai was great and heartbreaking at the same time. I’m sad the series ended, but the end and the fights were awesome.

Tamara Devine started off as a mortal, but odd things are happening. She’s hungry, can’t keep her eyes open, and someone keeps whispering her name which is very annoying. And she smells old blood. An ancient dragon’s magic, within Draakmar’s magic amulet that she wore, was keeping her alive -- but now it’s gone. She finally remembers she gave it to Paul’s 6-year-old daughter Diana when she got dragged into this nightmare. She is aware she is no longer human, but doesn’t know exactly what she is. Lord Constantine (“Costin”), a master vampire, wants to possess Tamara and is pressing his wrist to her mouth, ordering her to drink as Alpha Thane’s werewolf venom, feeling like acid, moves through her veins. Will she survive this? Or is she already dead even though she is in constant agony? How will her story turn out with so many pulls in so many directions? Is a HEA even possible?
The author is a genius at building up a vivid world around the reader as we actually feel like we are experiencing Tamara’s confusion and suffering from the very beginning of the page. She makes all of it seem so real as she takes us along that journey of confusion to figure it all out. It’s a unique experience that not all authors can provide, but it will absolutely keep your attention!
Nearly Dead ties up the series in the best way. Tamara has gone through the wringer, in more ways than one. Her relationships, her thoughts, her hopes and her dreams have shattered, been rebuilt, changed and shaped beyond what any normal person should have experienced.
Oh my!!! I adored this series. Definitely Ms Pillows’ best work ever. I am so glad that she made the decision to write and publish all of the books in this series close together so I wasn’t left in limbo between them. The writing is somewhat darker than most of her other works but she still manages it deftly and balances out the bad parts with good. Tamara has saved the world and Ms Pillow could easily have ended her story there, but we get a whole extra book about what happens after. She is still poor Tamara, getting dragged around by the world and people around her and she has to start making more decisions for herself.

Allow at least two days for the steamy, contemporary conclusion to this supernatural, paranormal, dark, age-gap, forbidden, enemies-to-lovers urban fantasy series, featuring betrayal, magic, and politics, primarily set in New York City.

The ultimate story of self discovery and healing. What an incredible ending to such a captivating story! I absolutely love everything about this series and this ending was just perfect!! I have really enjoyed Tamara's growth and development.
I can't believe it's over I think she could have stretched us into six bucks I really do. Even my husband got wrapped up in it cuz I'm having the books read to me while I'm working and he could overhear them. I hope this isn't the end I hope she gets more in this series it would be awesome.
I've waited to finish the series to write my review, and I'm glad I did. First, it's a great story, and carrying it over several volumes makes sense, as each has its own distinct focus.
I liked the characters (human and supernatural) and appreciated their individual growth over the saga. The author's take on supernaturals--including hybrids--is just different enough from the typical to add another element of interest.
The writing is excellent, both in the story but also in its grammar, punctuation, etc. The characters are well defined and are very relatable, regardless of them being human or supernatural.
Through much of this installment Tamara is fighting to stay alive from what she has become or from outside forces that want to control or destroy her. Will this new Tamara be torn apart or learn to live this new life? Amongst the twisted plot line I was also taken by the rich world building. From the mansion to Costin’s underground castle to the country estate to the warewolf gathering, the details bring the story to life. And let’s not forget the sweet sexy relationship that forms between Tamara and Costin that rounds out this completely absorbing series.

NEARLY DEAD is an Urban Fantasy Romance and the fourth installment in the 'Merely Mortal' series from Michelle Pillow. The world building is exquisite with a well-written plot and well-developed characters topped off with intrigue, suspense with twists and turns, magic, and romance. It's told in the first person from the POV of the main character's thoughts and feelings.
Born with no magic into a powerful magical family, Tamara Devine has always been told she's merely a mortal and must be protected.
When bitten by the Alpha werewolf, Costin turned her in an attempt to save her life. Now she's an abomination, a hybrid of werewolf and vampire. As those two entities fight for control inside her, she needs to control herself. While Tamara fights to control the battle inside her, she is also facing suspicion from the Council, betrayal by those close to her, a powerful necromancer, and werewolves and vampires that both want to claim her as their's. Throughout her battles, her traitorous dead brother Conrad is haunting her and advising her. Can she trust anything he says? Always by her side is her lover, the ancient Master Vampire, Constantin (Costin. Can their love survive her changes?
I'm sad the series ended, but I loved how the end of Tamara's story was written. And always, another great story from Michelle M. Pillow, the author.

“I think you’re more than you realize. I think you’ve always been more than any of us have realized."
Tamara Devine is unlike anyone else in her world. Born of a mortal woman and a magical man -- raised in the supernatural world, without magic, she has only ever wanted to be safe from the monsters. But somewhere along the line the supernatural elements of her world became drawn to her... more and more... and now, despite her best efforts to keep a low profile, she is in the thick of it.
As a final book in a series, which this very much feels like... in many ways it did exactly what it needed to do, had the high points I was so looking forward to -- both in terms of confrontations, revelations, and personal moments for members of her family as we caught a glimpse beyond the mask they show the world to their true hearts.
Tamara seemed to impact the lives of everyone she came in contact with -- whether she intended to or not. From her brother's to the vampire her grandfather made pledge to watch over her, she saw in them more than they ever saw in themselves (at least by the time all is said and done.) But, perhaps, greatest of all in this journey, is that as she grew and evolved, instead of settling for what the supernatural world would let her be, she discovered how to embrace all that she is, find strength in it, and not only embrace her own truths, but make and claim her own choices.
I was gifted with a copy of Nearly Dead and chose to share my thoughts.
The conclusion to what has been a powerful, dangerous, gripping, deadly but amazingly entertaining series.
Tamara has been through so much and now it’s her time to claim what she wants. She has grown throughout the whole series with dreams that had been shattered, her life as she knew it pulled apart and although she will always have a pull towards Paul. He was from a different part of her life that seems like a lifetime away and now she has a love that will last for all eternity.
WOW! This author knows how to write a story, I cried, my heart broke, it sang with joy, this was one roller coaster of a series.
What can I say but PERFECT and I won’t forget this series for a long, long time!.

Finale! The way the last novel ended, I was dying to find out Tamara’s fate. What an interesting situation of so many “blended” magical affiliations! I really liked how Tamara continuously was growing, changing, leaning and coming to terms with her new situation. Her inner dialogue and self reflection trying to find meaning and personal connections while maintaining her humanity was simply wonderful. Costin was a strong smouldering presence in Tamara’s life that I kept rooting for. Anthony, Sully, Astrid as well as the vampire, werewolf and magical communities all added more personality as well as complexity to the plot. Overall, this novel beautifully pulled together many of the characters and details from the previous stories, ending in what I felt was a very satisfying way.

Beautifully Written. What a fitting conclusion to this amazing book enchanting series. I was hooked with Tamara’s POV and her unique journey being a mortal in a magical family and encountering the supernatural world. Whether Team Paul or Team Costin provided a huge amount decisive dilemma, the story took an alternate journey involving apocalyptic dragons, nefarious Necromancer’s, scheming uncles, power hungry vampires, unresolved ghosts and conflicting feelings. Loads of action and adventure with even those feels of tender moments, so good. Love how this story was written and so worth reading. It is best to read in order as each book builds from the previous without recap. You will enjoy Tamara’s story and how she finds love and balance.

Each book in this series just keeps getting better and better and when you can't see a way out for Tamara and Costin, it all comes together for a great HEA.
After last book's cliff hanger ending, I could not wait for this book to come out! How was a mere mortal going to handle alpha werewolf blood and vampire blood battling in her body?
As past books, this was non-stop action and drama and I could not put it down. I love when villains finally get karma handed to them and surprising relationships are more exposed.
I am trying not to give away any spoilers so many vague statements to say that this was a great book and I loved it!.

WOW! This was a rollercoaster of a series. The conclusion to what has been a powerful, dangerous, compelling, deadly, yet incredibly entertaining series. Nearly Dead wraps up the series in the best way possible. Tamara has been put through the wringer, in more ways than one. Her relationships, her thoughts, her hopes and dreams have been shattered, rebuilt, changed and shaped in ways that no normal human should have to experience. Simply put, amazing.

What an excting end to this series. Michelle's storytelling knows no boundaries, and this climatic conclusion proves this.
Against all odds, Tamara survives being turned into both werewolf and vampire. This should not have been possible, but it happened. Then more was added to this mixture. The question was, could she control there various forces inside her, or would she be uncontrolled and go mad and viscous? Only time would tell. Unfortunately, that was something she really didn't have much of. Read this last book and find out for yourself.
This was an engaging read as Tamara and her adventures continual. To save her life Costin bites Tamara now she struggling to control herself. Angry at Costin for making her a monster but what kind of monster is she? No one has survived being bitten by both. With the council breathing down their necks, and her manipulating father wanting power, and half of Thane's pack wanting her to be Alpha, and Elizabeth on the loose, which threat must she overcome? How does this end? Loved how the ending of Tamara's story was written. I'd volunteer to read and review this copy I'd received.
This is the last book in this series. We find Tamara in a situation she did not want. And is struggling to conquer her rage. Her anger at Costin for turning her. Her rage that she was bitten by the Alpha before he was killed. Is she vampire? Is she werewolf? No she is both and the history of hybrids is not pretty. Can she learn to control her warring natures before the ruling council decides she needs to be put down? All while being attacked at every turn. This is a fast paced, compelling read. I love how this book brings all this together. And I’m a little sad to not have any more Tamara Devine adventures to read.
From a seemingly lost mortal fumbling through life in a paranormal world to a vampire werewolf hybrid Tamara’s journey through this series has been amazing. Watching her come into her own and truly find love was spectacular. Michelle M. Pillow has outdone herself with this series and especially with the series finale, Nearly Dead. This is definitely a must read but strongly advise you read the whole series to really experience the story. I can’t recommend this book highly enough!.

I thought the other books were brilliant but it was nothing compared to the roller coaster ride we had with this one. This is the 4th and final book in the series and it followed the same brilliant writing of the other three. Tamara finally finds her new true self and her future. But the journey to get there is an amazing read. So many twists and turns that keep you riveted to the book and I did not want to put it down (but I do have to sleep). If I could, I'd give it 10/10. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and I voluntarily leave this honest review.
I didn't want to be bitten, not by the werewolf and definitely not by the master vampire, Costin. But here we are with a war raging between those two changes and me no longer total, but what am I? I have loved this tale up to the start of this book. It took a while to get back into the characters with so many threads of the tale and twisting timelines. As the plot progressed it did get better and I enjoyed the rest of the book.

Loved this series as I did Michelle's other magical realms books. This set covered all the genres I so enjoy to escape into. From reading Bram Stoker's Dracula as a teenager, my fascination with Vampires has continued into this century! I love reading any story with a liberal dousing of magic in any format but especially when there is a smattering of humour. I highly recommend reading this authors stories if you have a penchant for magic, supernatural, human interactions and love.
Tamara has only ever wanted to be human; fate unfortunately has other ideas. This is a fantastic book: I was kept on the edge of my seat throughout this whole series. Betrayal, suspicion, wizards, necromancers, fights, werewolves, vampires, and love; it is all within these pages. I have loved this series and constantly had no idea how Tamara was going to survive. Brilliant! I voluntarily received and reviewed an ARC copy of the book.
A brilliant conclusion to a must read series. Tamara has endured so much already and in this instalment she must conquer her biggest challenge yet. This is fast paced, full of action, magic, choices, supernatural politics and is totally unpredictable. It’s exciting, exhilarating and one heck of a roller coaster ride. I cannot recommend this entire series enough. Do not miss it.

I loved this story. Tamara is strong and so determined to live HER life and not be controlled. Mortimer really was no surprise but his end was. This series conclusion filled in all the blanks. I highly recommend the entire series.
