This would have been so much better if either the bit about Syrax was just cut completely OR if there was a LOT of reflection about how he treated her. It would have also been nice to hear some of his thoughts on why him treating Syrax so poorly was wrong. He treated that poor girl like a breeder and couldn't wait to get rid of her. Then he wanted to send her off to be enslaved by a culty religion. Kinda hard to respect a guy like that. I guess it's totally okay because she was weak in body and spirit.... Yikes. Then he treated Mina the exact opposite. I mean, he still took Syrax as a partner and knocked her up multiple times. Left her unprotected because he didn't care about her. He made choices that he alone is accountable for.
Big ol' misogyny bro. I guess Mina is better because she will give him stronger offspring and be able to care for the nest better.

5/5 ⭐️

I'm glad we got Klauth's story
from the beginning to where book two ended.
I hate that the mages twisted history and made him and Thauglor sound like monsters.
Finding out that Klauth’s father designed the academy and that Klauth's started building it was interesting
Something that wasn't mentioned in the previous books.
I love how the place where Mina's art class is among the cherry blossom trees was Klauth's mother's favorite place.
Klauth and Thauglor being besties is something I didn't see coming.
Mina is going to have her hands full once Thauglor’s egg hatches.
I can't wait to see how Mina reacts when Klauth tells her what actually happened
and how he tried to avenge the death of his hatchlings which lead to the mages cursing him 😭

ARC Reader review
This is a novella from Klauth's pov with his backstory. From previous books, you'll led to believe that he had gone insane and went on a killing rampage. However, history is not what it seems.
Initially, Klauth is arrogant and somewhat unlikable. But events unfold, and you begin to understand him. The most interesting thing is that since the story is told from Klauth's pov, it's told from inside the egg. And yet, it works.

Background story for the Red Cursed Egg

This was a fascinating read. I loved learning more about Klauth and how he ended up in the cursed egg and what he was able to sense outside the egg.

I'm absolutely fascinated by this series and I can't wait for the next book.

Serenity Rayne has graced us with Klauth, the first of two planned novellas in her Dragonis Academy series. The book is only from Klauth's perspective, from past events all the way to the present.

I have to say history did do him dirty. They painted him as the bad guy when really all he did was go on an epic revenge tour. However, I will say he did take it way past an eye for an eye, but this was centuries ago; they did that kind of thing back then.

The beginning half of the novella was interesting. It filled out some of the missing gaps, but it was Klauth's perspective of the present that really made the story for me. I'm already deeply involved in this story, so I enjoyed seeing those scenes from his POV, his thoughts and reactions to people and situations. It never occurred to me how much things changed, not when it comes to technology but when it comes to dragon culture itself. I was more than a little surprised. One thing is fairly obvious: Klauth already cherishes Mina. I can't wait to see how he fits in with the rest of the group.

The Cursed Red Egg's History.

Time loses all its meaning and the days start to bleed together. An imprisonment of a thousand years can vanish in just the blink of an eye, and soon voices start to flicker in and out of the egg chamber in Malivore – until hers captures all his attention.

She sings an ethereal song awakening something deep within him, stirring that long-forgotten spark of life.

Who is this enigmatic woman?

Could she be the one sent to finally set him free?

Trial of the Cursed Egg- Year One

Klauth - History of the Red Cursed Egg
Progeny of the Cursed Egg - Year Three
Thauglor - History of the Black Cursed Egg
Queen of the Cursed Egg - Year Four

Klauth is book 2.5 in the Dragonis Academy by Serenity Rayne. I have been enjoying this series. But, I sometimes question if this type of novella is needed to complete the series and for us to completely understand everything that is going on in the universe.

I will say that it was nice getting to know more about Klauth, more about his history, and more about how he came to be cursed and trapped in the red egg. And I enjoyed getting to know his best friend Thauglor. But, it was when we started to revisit events that happened in the first two books from his point of view that I started to question if we needed this novella. What I enjoyed when we were revisiting events from the first two books was that we were getting more intel on the dragons that we didn't get in the first two books.

One of the things that I did come to realize in reading this novella is that Klauth is definitely a good strong mate for Mina. It's going to be really very interesting to see how he interacts with Mina's other mates and honestly, I can already feel that there is going to be some tension between Klauth and Abraxis. And I am definitely curious about what is going to happen what's going to happen when Thauglor makes his appearance and how he's going to connect and manage to fit in with Mina and her other mates.

Honestly, this novella just got me excited for the 3rd book and I am so excited to see what's in store for Mina and her mates.

If you haven't already started this series then you need to start this series ASAP. This is such a great series to read and it's well written. Serenity Rayne has done a great job with writing this series.

Klauth: History of the Red Cursed Egg is an absolutely enthralling fantasy adventure that had me turning pages late into the night—and it’s one of the most richly imagined tales I’ve read in some time.

From the very first chapter, Serenity Rayne draws you in with vivid world-building: the lore surrounding the Red Cursed Egg, the history of Klauth, the layers of magic, betrayal, and legacy—everything feels alive, multi-dimensional, and utterly immersive. The author balances epic scope with intimate character moments beautifully. Our protagonists are flawed, compelling, and full of heart; you root for them, you fear for them, and you celebrate even their small victories.

What I loved most was how Rayne doesn’t take the easy route. There are twists that feel earned, moral ambiguity that adds depth, consequences that sting. And yet, even in darkness, there are sparks of hope, loyalty, and courage. The pacing is spot-on: there’s enough tension to keep you hooked, but also enough reflection to let the story breathe and the characters grow.

The prose is elegant yet accessible—poetic when called for, sharp when the stakes demand it. Descriptions of landscapes, magical phenomena, and battle scenes are vivid without being overwrought. And the emotional stakes? They hit. If you have a soft spot for fantasy with dire curses, redemptive arcs, hidden histories, or dragon-mythos, this one checks all the boxes.

In short: Klauth is more than just a fantasy story—it’s an immersive journey through magic, burdens, and the lengths we go to protect what we love. Highly recommend for anyone who wants a tale that lingers long after the final page.

I have some mixed feelings about this novella as a part of the Dragonis Academy series. On the one hand, I liked to learn more about Klauth’s past and the events that led to his curse. I believe knowing more about his past will help to understand him better in the next book, and his connection to the other cursed egg was definitely an interesting bonus.

On the other hand, I lost interest once we started to see the events from the first books through his eyes (or shell). I know that is a me-thing; I never read bonus scenes when they tell a part of the story through a different POV because I know I’m not a fan of those. So, I think your love for this book will depend on how you feel about seeing things from a different POV, after you’ve already read about it. Although, even if you’re not a fan, I would at least recommend reading the first part of the book. And, in full honesty, I do have to admit he adds some interesting intel on dragons throughout the second part as well.

This was a short little novella that I literally read in one sitting. First let me start off with a little rant. I'm not normally a novella person because I love a good full length novel. This book is the exact reason why I don't read novellas. Serenity Rayne, you sucked me in, tantilized my imagination and left me longing for more. Why? Why did you torture me with a novella? I NEED MORE!

I love that this book gives us everything from Klauth's perspective. I feel like in the previous books, people will make assumptions about his character but you learn so much more in this book. I do feel like I have a better understanding of why he is the way he is. Just know in this book, you're going to be going back to a lot of things that happened in the previous books but seeing it through his eyes was a great experience for me.

I love this. I just need more now but that's the sign of a good writer. I gave this four out of five stars.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novella because, by this point—having read the earlier books—I’d built up so much curiosity about the character inside the red egg. There’s so much personality you can feel, even through the egg just pulsating and lighting up at certain key moments in the story. So now that we have this novella, it was such a treat to finally read Klauth’s story.

I loved getting to see his life before he was in the egg, his friendship with Thaugglor, and getting a clearer picture of what kind of male he is. It was also fun to see the story from his point of view inside the egg, and I’m very curious about how everything will play out from here—especially the dynamics in the nest. He’s such an alpha dragon that he makes Abraxis look like a baby. And mind you, Abraxis has been my favorite since the first book.

Can’t wait for the next installment of the Dragonis Academy series.

3.75 stars. Zero spice.

I love this novella from Klauth's POV. In previous books the history of dragons state that he went mad and was dangerous and unstable but from Klauth's POV we that is not true. History was indeed re-written by the mages who cursed both him and Thauglor.

I loved Klauth and Thauglor's relationship. Their bromance was a delight to read about because Thauglor was definitely Klauth's ride or die. He was by Klauth's side for everything.

Reading about Klauth's experience inside of the cursed egg was entertaining as well as heartwarming. To read about his loneliness, hopelessness and how his mindset shifted once Mina came into the picture.

This was indeed an enjoyable read and now that he is officially part of the harem, I can't wait to see how the dynamic shift and what's next in store for Mina and her men while they wait for Thauglor's egg to finally hatch.

I really enjoyed this novella, it gives us an insight to the past of Klauth and we gain more information on Thauglor too. It gave helpful information as to what was fake history of the victors and what truly happened to both of them to be imprisoned. It also covers how it felt to be trapped in the egg while venturing with Mina during classes, it was really interesting. It is definitely worth a read as it adds that extra layer going into the next book as it gives us a better understanding of Klauth's mind and personality coming into the new world which has vastly changed.

The pacing of this felt good, it kept me engaged all the way through and felt it added to my enjoyment of the series. Can easily recommend this if you love lore and have enjoyed the series so far! I can't wait for the chance to learn more of Thauglor's experience and for his time to come in the future.

What if you were imprisoned in an egg for centuries and could only be freed by the one being the mages thought would never exist?

Klauth is a novella that is part of the Dragonis Academy series. In this book, we finally get to hear Klauth’s story in his own words.

I love Rayne’s ability to delve into the emotions of her characters and pull you into the story, and this ability is woven throughout Klauth’s story. I enjoyed reading his backstory and learning how he experienced events that occurred in the first two books. I’m interested to see how he fits into the nest and can’t wait to see how Mina handles some of his more ancient views on how a dragoness and her nest mates should be.

This novella, number 2.5 in the Dragonis Academy series was just fantastic. Learning the background from Klauth's POV, and his experience of being cursed and then of being able to hear Mina while in the egg filled in so many blanks and enhanced the experience after reading book 2.
The ancient knowledge and instincts that Klauth mentions have been lost is also amazing. Knowing he will be able to guide Mina in so many ways, and educate them all more on how to nest, what pairings are possible, form for births etc, was really enlightening and encouraging for the future books and relationships. I am looking forward to more of Mina and Klauth with the rest of the nest mates, and to when Thauglor's times comes too!

It was so interesting learning Klauth's backstory. At times, i thought he was a little mean, but at the same time, I get why he was the way he was. Klauth definitely wanted a true mate, and he found that in Mina, after many, many years trapped in his curse.

I really enjoyed reading his thought process when he realised Mina was his true mate. It is obvious that he is devoted to everything Mina and will stop at nothing to have her.

It is a great edition to this series. It explains so much.

Thank you so much to Serenity and Meg for the opportunity to read this story. I am forever grateful 🙏

Such a unique experience reading from the perspective of Klauth through his time in the egg. Story had me in all different feels with his first hand experience of the events. It was hard to tell, like klauth, how much time had passed since being encased and it makes it more interesting to see how things had changed from his time to the present.

I will say just a personal note I started to realize just how much “I could taste” and “tang” was used and once I became aware of this I could stop pointing them out lol. It made me read the book faster though to catch more but the book was a great addition in my opinion.

Enjoyed this, but not as much as the first two books in the series.

This is the backstory of the Red Wyrm Dragon, Klauth. Former High King of the Dragons, and how he came to be trapped, and then how his story intersects with Mina and her mates at the Academy. I would have liked it more if it had of had less backstory, and also the segments of his time in the egg with Mina had been more abridged. For these parts it was just retreading old scenes and I just wanted to get on with it. Klauth is a great character to add into Mina's pack, and I am picking up the next book and binging it as well. Addictive little series this is turning into.

insightful

This book was very insightful into the back story of the character Klauth. I’m so glad this author decided to give him more of a voice and explaining why his character is the way he is. It’s very helpful to have his backstory and it just really adds to this series. A lot of the time I wish authors would include more point of views to help understand characters better and this book really does that. This is an exciting series and I can’t wait to see where it takes us.

Refreshing break

The concept of this book is kind of hard to explain.
It's a mid series break novella. But it provides so much rich back story, history of the cursed eggs and ancient dragon warlords.
Klauth is a dragon king from a strong bloodline.
He's just trying to fulfill his parents' wishes in building the ultimate college where all 'species' can come together.
When heartbreak befalls him and he's cursed, he spends a thousand years waiting and plotting for his release and in that time he falls in love.
This short book was a quick and delightful read.

So I was really curious as to how the cursed eggs came to be, and finally I have the answer!

I'm so glad we now have Klauth's point of view, as it helps clear up so many questions I had when reading the first two Draconis Academy books. We learn of his time before being trapped in his egg, and get to know what he experienced after Mina took possession of it.

If you've enjoyed the first two books in this series, this is a must read to understand this character.

I received an ARC of this ebook from the author via Literary Inspired, and I'm voluntarily leaving this review.

This is the third book in the Dragonis Academy. There are a total of 6 books in this series. I love the books I have read so far in this series.
This story was magnificent. It gave us the backstory of Klauth. Who he is and how he became cursed. My favorite part in this book was experiencing everything through his eyes. It was different and unique.
Thank you, Serenity Rayne, for another amazing book in this series. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series. Your books will always be on my TBR list.

In this novella from Rayne you get to see how Klauth became trapped inside the crimson egg and what it has been like for him up until he finally hatches for Mina. I really enjoyed reading his perspective and getting to find out why he became trapped. It gives you a new appreciation for his character by learning some of his thoughts and feelings. Can’t wait to see what his character adds to the overall story.

Brilliant read. Obviously cannot read this without reading the other books in this series.
This is Klauths History and we get to better know the man we thought we already knew. But he is vastly different from what we were led to believe. Although this book is short it gives us a good insight into klauth and Thauglor and how they came to be, but we also see a lot of growth, this was a great bonus read.

I loved getting to see Klauth's experience while in the egg and learning his history. There's a lot of information on the old dragon ways, some I can see him influencing a return to. I also loved learning that Klauth and Thauglor were the best of friends. It's going to be so interesting to see them interact with the nest once Thauglor finally hatches.

This series is really well done. I highly recommend it!

This was an interesting novella set between books 2 & 3 and told from Klauths POV. Not only do we get Klauth's history, we find out how he got put in the egg to begin with. There are lots of little insights that the author shares from his perspective of things happening in the previous books that keep this story interesting. Now that Klauth has broken out, I am very interested to see what changes for the nest in the next books.

I loved learning the history of Klauth and Thauglor from Klauth point of view. It was interesting hearing of his interactions with Mina and Thauglor from inside a egg. One thing that stood out for me was Sayrax. Even though she was not a strong dragon or a true mate for Klauth she defended her nest like a champion. I also enjoyed the relationship between Klauth and Thauglor (Brothers until the end!)
The mages made a mistake siding with the green dragons. The time for redemption is near.

Klauth is book 2.5 in the Dragonis Academy Series. It is a fantasy novella that gives insight, and history, into Klauth, the red cursed egg, from his POV.

This was a quick and informative read. I really loved getting to know Klauth and seeing things through his eyes. The writing, flow, pace, and plot were all amazing, as were the characters, storytelling, storyline, character development, and world building. If you are a fan of this terrific series then I'd definitely recommend this novella.

Great novella to add to the series!
This is all in Klauth’s POV we get the backstory of how and why he was cursed into the egg. And it’s nothing like the legend tells.
And we also get some story when he’s in the egg mostly when Mina claims him. And then we finally meet him!!
Obviously it ends on a small cliff because we know their story doesn’t end here!
I’m excited for the rest of this series including Thauglor’s story.

Serenity gives us the story of how Klauth became cursed into the red egg. From his first disastrous mating, the death of his clutch to being cursed and what he goes through, until he's introduced to the rest of Mina's nest, dive into this wonderfully written book with complex characters and plot twists that keep you turning pages throughout. I've loved reading this story and highly recommend the series! Don't miss out on this book!!
