Milo needed a break from fighting giant monsters, insane wizards, and the constant gang warfare of Shadowport.
The World Boss he'd accidentally woken up was dead. The annoying wizard who'd captured him was lost in the void along with his annoying little dragon, his airship stolen, and his library destroyed. That left him free to go exploring in the dark tunnels beneath the city.
He'd thought that as a were-rat he was unique, but he's heard a rumor of a small town of ratkin living beneath the city and sets out to find it.
Limburger Hollow will test him in new ways. Friendly people will welcome him to their town, and then toss him into the fighting pits, wizardly duels, and competitions between the local assassins who love to play a game called Surprise!
But Milo loves a challenge, and if he doesn't know all the rules, he'll make up some of his own.
Book 3 of this unique spin on LitRPG featuring an unusual MC you can't help but root for. Featuring plenty of humor, action, thievery, ninja abilities, a detailed world and System, science skills, magic tinkering, item invention, and more originality than you can shake a rat tail at!
Wow! Soooooooo much fun. And you can't get any cozier than living in Limburger Hollow. With characters like Larry, Tweedle and his brother Ringtail, and Old Healer, and Chef Bleusnout. All working for the betterment of the tribe. Where Milo is welcomed with open arms and is now living amongst the Ratkin, his race! Cozy, then the Spider Army came. With Spiders, Spiders, Spiders everywhere! But Milo is not without allies that he can rely on. Plus there's a mystery afoot, that only Milo can solve! But really in the end it's just a game, well more than a game, and when Milo steps outta his pod. He embraces his real life and the problems that may have occurred while he was playing the game.
Here's a few quotes for ya:
“NO Kablooie for you! Larry saves Hamster Town!”
“Make friends with Larry? Have you lost your mind!!” Her grandfather looked around at the floor and in his pockets. “No, I’m pretty sure I have it somewhere."
“I don’t know what shirk means. I skipped shirking class.”
“Thank you, brother. The stupid part of me really does want to go see the bad shrooms. I’ll ignore it for now.”
“Well dip me in green paint and call me an orc!"
"You never invited dwarves to a revolution unless it was at a brewery."
Walrus King continues his great progressive fantasy series with Tunnel Rat 3. Our hero, Milo, is supersmart and focused and a work-aholic. He has to be doing something constructive all time. He loves fixing things. That includes rescuing a village of anthromorphic rats (ratkin) from a triple invasion of spiders, another ratkin village, and a group of human raiders.
Milo goes by 'Tallsqueak' and he doesn't really care about the magical system--he just gets things done and kills bosses with a combination of magic and technology.
Highly entertaining, even if you haven't read the earlier books.
While the real-world narrative slightly improved, the game introduced fanciful elements that jarred with the prior tone. I can see the author is having fun but it is at the expense of realism in the characters and setting. Psycho spiders that flip to become dwarven drinking buddies. Barbie-doll sized fairies that exhibit borderline sapience. Cheese-fiends that become placid children overnight. It's just not consistent.
Milo is a great character. I like that he's straightforward, smart, shares with others when he can, and is a very capable fighter. Hopefully, his future interactions with people, especially at the upcoming party, go well, and he is reunited with his family.
This book had several mysteries solved and issues wrapped up. 😊 There is still more to go, though, and I'm looking forward to book four. 📖
Like most people, I only leave reviews on really good or really bad items. Tunnel Rat 3 is a great read. After reading this, I think that some of the 5 stars that I have given in the past should have only been 4 stars, and I have a new standard to judge by.
I love this series and I've been reading it since it first came out on Royalroad. This review is just my way of saying thank you to the author for keeping it free to read on Royalroad. He hasn't yet disappeared behind a pay wall like so many authors that got a start on Royalroad.
Omg this series is amazing it is complex exciting and has alot of moving plots. I have never listened 🎶 to a LitRPG book like this I didn't like it at first it was a little confusing 😕 until milo gets into the game it's a fun ride that keeps you guessing. We'll done Walrus King.
This is a charming entry in a good series. There are some clunky bits and I didn’t even care. I liked the cozy aspects of Limburger Town and the new characters. I wasn’t sad that that there wasn’t much in the real world and enjoyed what we got of it.
Well written and edited. Funny. I get the references :) Especially the references to Hamster Huey and the Gooey Kablooey - Calvin’s favourite, not so much for his dad, who has to read it every single night.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ this arc is nice mostly bc of all the character development and changes. some of the story is really ma and then other bits are so ya its a bit jarring. things feel like they've gone full circle now though and the next book will probably determine whether I drop the series or not
DNFed at 11%. When I find my mind wandering, it's time to quit. I still like this world and I like the character of Milo. But overall, the stakes are too low for me to stay engaged.
