Forgiveness isn’t easy. Grace isn’t cheap. And second chances don’t come without scars. But when Jesus is at the center, even the most broken places can be made whole. The Reverend’s Second Chance doesn’t romanticize the pain, it walks straight into it. The bitterness. The loss. There’s a weight to the past and a hush around the unknown. But woven through the tension is mercy — strong enough to bear it, gentle enough to heal it.

There’s a heaviness in this story that feels familiar to anyone who’s ever carried regret, had a broken heart, or tried to outrun shame. But there’s also this undercurrent … this quiet, relentless mercy that refuses to let the broken stay broken. A mercy that doesn’t excuse the pain … it holds it and heals it.

“Haven’t you learned yet that God’s timing differs from ours? Maybe He doesn’t want you doing this alone.” We race time. He redeems it. We want fast. He works deep. And none of it … not the healing, the hoping, or the heartache .. was ever meant to be carried without Him.

And then there’s the gut-punch reminder: “Forgiveness might take time … not forgiving hurts you in the end. It hurts your relationship with God, too.” Oof. Conviction with a cross in the background. It hit me like a whisper and a shout all at once.

This story is steady and stirring. It’s the kind that lingers in your soul because it doesn’t flinch at what’s broken. It invites the ache, wrestles with forgiveness, and then holds space for grace to move. Not surface-level grace but the kind rooted in Christ, shaped by Scripture, and lived out through timing, surrender, and second chances.

The faith content is lived-in and unmistakably woven into every decision, prayer, and moment of conviction. Lauralynn Keller’s writing is so steady and immersive, it felt like walking beside the characters … through grief, through grace, and toward healing.

Jesus shows up not just in comfort, but in confrontation … in conviction … in the kind of mercy that reshapes a life.

If you've ever needed a reminder that God can still do something beautiful with the messiest parts of your story … this one’s for you. Not for the perfect. But for the willing.

Perfect for readers who long for historical romance that doesn’t shy away from pain and always points to Jesus.

An amazing story! My heart broke for Samuel and Lydia as I learned of their past with its mistake and betrayal; it soared as they were brought back together in God’s time. A unique story balanced with sorrow and joy as they move forward with their second chance. Ruby and Alice add a definite charm to the story.

You won’t be disappointed reading this story. One of the best love stories I have read in a while. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

Widowed Harmony Springs school teacher Lydia Jefferson had finally found a semblance of peace in her life when former childhood sweetheart Samuel Allen showed up in her life as the new pastor in town. Neither understood the reason for their losing touch seven years prior and until the reason for this grave injustice was revealed, their relationship was on shaky ground. Both Lydia and Seth had compassionate hearts which had great significance in this story with heart wrenching situations that forced them into closer proximity. This story made me feel the heartache they went through, both in their relationship and the events around them, as well as the joy that surrounded them by the book’s conclusion. A powerful message of forgiveness was integral to the story and so inspiring after all this couple had experienced. I am loving this series and can’t wait to read the next book!

This is the second book in the “Second Chances in Harmony Springs Series”. There are characters from book one but it definitely works as a standalone. Not only is this a second chance romance but a Marriage of convenience story as well. It was so good! Samuel and Lydia were once engaged, and right before he went off to seminary they made an unwise decision. Circumstances happened where there is anger, hurt and confusion between them. Years later they meet again. Lydia is a widow. She lost her husband and daughter to sickness. When she meets the new pastor and it’s Samuel she is not happy. More circumstances force a marriage of convenience. They have a lot of things to work through. I really enjoyed this story! I loved how they both took on responsibility for Ruby, after her grandmother died. I felt so bad for their past hurts but I loved watching how they worked past it. They made mistakes, but forgave and loved again. I loved watching them become a family even though some sad events happened first. Good Christian content as well. Overall, a great story and I definitely recommend!

A story of second chances and forgiveness. Lydia was dealt a bad hand with life but she survived and is happy with her new home and position. When the new preacher arrives she should be happy but he brings sadness and anger from her past. God has a plan though and he works in unconventional ways.

It’s a sweet story in the end.

“…’not forgiving hurts you in the end. It hurts your relationship with God too.’ He pointed to the cross over the altar. ‘Considering what He did for us—dying to forgive our sins—I think we should take our example from Him.’”

The easy, gentle romance and historical Western aspects of Lauralyn Keller’s The Reverend’s Second Chance were a breath of fresh air this week. I was certainly in the mood for this novel, which is easy to read and reminiscent of the style of Janette Oke or Kim Vogel Sawyer books. This is a marriage of convenience story, where much of the book’s action takes place after said marriage.

Lydia and Samuel had been childhood sweethearts who were separated by poor decisions and time. Shocked to find themselves together in the same small town, Samuel realizes his feelings for her never changed. Lydia, however, is determined to stay far away emotionally.

I was thankful to see that Lydia had good friends and a mother-in-law who loved her enough to see the roots of her problem with Samuel are anger and bitterness. “Forgiveness doesn’t come easily…you owe it to yourself to forgive him. It’s only going to eat at you more and more until bitterness is your constant companion.”- Dorothy

When the marriage occurs, Lydia brings no love. Instead, she brings a walled heart, determined not to be hurt again. Maybe she can forgive, but trust? Again, Lydia’s confidants point out that love is more than a feeling, but a choice. “Love is hard,” Cassie said. “It means making the decision every day to love the person you vowed to cherish. Sometimes you won’t feel it, but you can still choose it.”

With all the feels of Little House on the Prairie or When Calls the Heart, this story from the 1880s Montana Territory will serve up a generous slice of small town life with its challenges, friendships, and victories. I must applaud Ruby and Alice, 6-year-olds, as adorable scene stealers! My fave adult characters are John and Dorothy, with their non-judgmental ways and sage, godly advice.

Book 2 in the Second Chances in Harmony Springs series, I thought this book stood well on its own. Highly recommended!

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“Some family you’re born with. Some family you choose.”-Cassie

“…you can’t let fear hold you captive. We can’t change what’s going to be. But we can choose to trust, no matter what may come.”-John

“You can’t control the feeling of anger, but you can control how you act.”- Cody

The Reverend's Second Chance, by Lauralyn Keller, is the second book in the Second Chances in Harmony Springs series. This is a nicely written story that is easy to read and imagine. This story does contain characters from the first in the series, so it is best to read them in order. However, the characters are well introduced so it could also be a good stand-alone story. Lydia and Samuel were sweethearts when he went away to school to become a pastor and quickly the letters stopped, and they went their own ways. Now years later, she is a widow working as a schoolteacher in Harmony Springs and he is assigned to be their local pastor. Current events push them together and they revisit their past and what happened.

This is such a good story. The theme of the story is forgiving others. In this story we see how God finds a way to bring Lydia and Samuel back together and gives them a second chance of a life together. We also see how people's thoughts and actions can negatively impact others. The story also gives a look into the beliefs people had at the time, especially how they thought teachers and pastors should act. The story has good caring characters, and I found the young girls in the story to be very enjoyable. This is a very enjoyable story to read. I look forward to more in the series.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this story; this is my honest review.

The Reverend’s Second Chance by Lauralyn Keller is a Christian Historical Romance. It is the second book in the Second Chances in Harmony Springs series. It focuses on Lydia Jefferson, a widow trying to escape her shameful past that happened before her marriage to her first husband.

Samuel Allen whose fiancée walked out of his life causing him to doubt if he would ever love again.. But when his first church assignment sends him to Harmony Springs, he finds himself face to face with the woman who disappeared from his life seven years before, and he finds himself questioning his future.

When a child becomes orphaned the two find themselves caught up in protecting the child as well as Lydia’s job as a teacher. I loved how the author built a story centered around second chances at love, at a family, and to overcome actions taken in the past. When I began reading this book, I found myself unable to put it down.

The author creates characters and a storyline that draw you in and help the reader understand choices the characters make. While I believe you could read this book on its own, I believe reading the books in order will provide the best reading experience.

So if you want a Christian historical romance, check out The Reverend’s Second Chance by Lauralyn Keller, and the first book in the Second Chances in Harmony Springs series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Christian Historical Fiction is a favorite genre to read. The Reverend’s Second Chance by Lauralyn Keller is Book 2 in the Second Chances in Harmony Spring. I read Book 1 in this series and have been anxiously awaiting this book.

I was captivated by the synopsis and dived right into the book. We are back in Harmony Springs, Montana for this book. The 2 main characters of this book are Lydia Jefferson and Samuel Allen. Lydia is a widow and the Teacher in Harmony Springs. She lost her husband and daughter and isn't sure what her future holds. Samuel Allen comes to Harmony Springs to be the Pastor for the local Church. Lydia and Samuel are shocked to run into each other in the small town. They once were engaged but circumstances had them end their engagement. Lydia tries to avoid Samuel, although it seems God has other plans for them. Lydia and Samuel have the chance to help an orphaned child and that is the reason for their marriage of convience. I LOVE how through their new circumstances and marriage they are able to grow individually and as a couple. They really put Christ at the center of their lives and deal with the past in order to move forward. The book is one of Second Chances, Faith, and Family. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance. WONDERFUL BOOK!

I really enjoy stories of second chances. It illustrates forgiveness and new beginnings. This story shares the journey of Lydia and Samuel as their past catches up with them. It was no accident that Samuel has come to be the preacher in the town where Lydia resides. Their past is rich in hurt, secrets and misunderstandings.

Lydia loves her job as the town’s school teacher. She adores children and is trying to overcome the pain she has endured recently. I like how Lydia has such a sweet spirit around her. If only she can move on from the loss she has experienced.

Samuel never thought he would see Lydia again. He has always wondered why she disappeared all those years ago. Much to his surprise, Lydia is now living in the town where he is the new preacher. I enjoyed their brief encounter as you can feel the tension between them. The author does a good job of bringing Lydia’s bitterness to the surface.

This beautiful historical book has all the right tools to show how God heals brokenness and helps forgiveness take place. Second chances don’t always happen for some but if we allow God to soften our hearts we can find blessings and a future filled with His grace.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

I have really been enjoying this series, and this story is about Lydia Jefferson the widowed schoolteacher who already has a painful connection to the new pastor, Samuel Allen. Once upon a time they were sweethearts and planning their marriage, till one fateful night and the machinations of others stepped in their way. Both are shocked beyond words when they meet up again halfway across the country after having lost all communication between one another for years.

This was really a great read which was emotionally charged and dealt with the reality of bitterness and forgiveness. How does forgiveness look and work when the one who wronged us is back in our lives? Not only that, but who does the forgiveness ultimately help? And when trust is lost, is there a way to regain it?

Packed with an arranged marriage, a second chance romance, and a little girl that needs a home, this was a story that I will certainly reread. There are some difficult parts, along with a child's death. I can't wait for the next in the series.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

The Reverend's Second Chance beautifully illustrates how God helps us bear our burdens and how forgiving hearts can heal our souls.

I have a particular fondness for second chance stories, especially those filled with such depth and purpose. I felt a strong connection with Samuel and Lydia, and it was heartening to witness their growth as they navigated their past wounds.

This is a compelling tale of fresh starts, the transformative power of forgiveness, and the unwavering comfort that faith provides. I appreciate that Samuel and Lydia’s journeys are portrayed with authenticity and patience, allowing their healing to unfold naturally and meaningfully.

This Christian historical romance is a testament to the enduring power of love and faith.

The true meaning of forgiveness. This story will give you a wonderful example of this principle. Lydia Jefferson and Samuel Allen were childhood sweethearts but following a shameful mistake, never saw each other again until they come face-to-face in Harmony Springs when he becomes the new pastor and she is already living there as the schoolteacher. She's been a widow for a few years and is haunted by the deaths of her daughter and husband from influenza. Both Lydia and Samuel are beyond shocked to see each other and have very different recollections as to their parting 7 years ago!
I very much enjoyed this story because it showed not only the power of forgiveness but also how to deal with years of feelings of betrayal, pain and anger. The author showed that it wasn't something to get over overnight but took time and with faith, it could be done. I loved the theme of faith that ran through the story too. The children that were brought into the story were priceless! Ruby and Alice were gems!

This is such a beautiful story of second chances after hurt, betrayal, lies, and loss. Beautiful flawed characters of faith who each carry hurt around and when after years the truth is revealed they can finally walk in God’s purpose for their lives. This is one of the most endearing stories I have read in a while and I will carry it with me for quite awhile as it resonates in my heart. I loved Ruby and her childlike faith and she tugged on my heartstrings as an orphan. Lydia is not only a school teacher but is an example of stepping up and being a woman of God. This is a story you must add to your must read list as I believe it will bless you. This is book two in the Second Chances in Harmony Springs series and it can be read as a stand-alone but I can assure you that you won’t want to miss out by not reading book one also. I can’t wait to read the next installment.

The Reverend's Second Chance, by author Lauralyn Keller, is book one in the Second Chances in Harmony Springs series. This is a wonderful story. I was captivated by the story and characters from the very beginning.

Lydia Jefferson is the school teacher in Harmony Springs. She is a widow living in a small house with her loving mother-in-law. A passionate teacher, she loves all of her students. Samuel Allen is the new minister in town. He has a mysterious past with Lydia.

The lessons is this book are powerful. Readers will see forgiveness, charity, love, gossip, jealousy, and friendship. The writing is exquisite. Descriptions took me to 1888’s Montana territory. I felt like I was there as I read about sickness, church, neighbors, and daily life. It was a rough time. Author Keller did a great job crafting her characters. Their conversations and descriptions were authentic for the setting.

I highly recommend this riveting tale. It gets a 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Samuel and Lydia

I really didn’t like this couple. I wanted to. The story was made for me. Found family and second chances are some of my favorite tales, but the charm of the last book wasn’t in this one. It started out great. The set up had me feeling deep emotions. I cried at Rudy’s pain. But then it went off a cliff.

Lydia never really gave Frank the love he deserved for placing himself in a loveless marriage to protect her. Samuel was annoying. I found myself skimming over their interactions. And didn’t care if they got together. It did get better by the end, but that felt like it was too little too late. Though it did save the book from being a one star- that and Dorothy as well as the beginning. In fact I would have rather followed Dorothy’s journey than Lydia’s.

This was definitely a huge miss for me.

The Reverend's Second Chance (Second Chances in Harmony Springs Book 2) by Lauralyn Keller is a story of faith, God’s help in dealing with strong emotions of guilt, loss, anger and betrayal. While it doesn’t sugar-coat the recovery, it does show that will God’s help guidance and power it is possible.

The characters, Lydia Jefferson and Samuel Allen, are realistic, their reactions to seeing each other after seven years is real and the relationship rebuilding is authentic too. Such a genuine story that could be possible. God is at work with these main characters and children, building their faith then showing how to live their faith in their everyday lives. I highly recommend this Christian historical fictional romance to all.

The Reverend’s Second Chance can be read as a stand alone, however we do see some characters from book 1, The Rancher’s Unexpected Bride, which is equally as enjoyable. Read both!

Lydia has a painful past, even more painful than Samuel knows. But God is the God of second chance, the Healer of broken hearts, and the One who releases us from shame. I loved watching the healing taking place in both of these characters. It brought hope and a future into a forced relationship.

I highly recommend this story about a teacher and a preacher who cross paths after several years, and open their hearts and home to joy.

I enjoyed this story. I liked that Lydia and Samuel were given a second chance at love and where able to get the misunderstandings cleared up. I liked that even before the misunderstandings from the past were revealed, Samuel was willing to do everything he could to win Lydia’s love back and to have her trust him. I liked that they both forgave each other and those who had kept them apart. I also love how they opened their home to children who needed love. I liked how this story showed that family is sometimes those you choose. I thought it was a sweet story.

A Heartfelt Journey of Grace and New Beginnings

The Reverend’s Second Chance was a wonderful second-chance story, made especially meaningful through its touching journey of faith. It felt real, uplifting, and deeply faith-filled as the characters leaned on God for guidance, forgiveness, and healing.

The reminder that trusting God makes healing and peace possible—even in the most challenging and uncertain times—resonated with me most and created a strong emotional connection. The way the story spoke about grace—both accepting it and extending it to others—was beautiful and deeply touching.

A warm, heartfelt book that sincerely reminds us that God’s love offers new beginnings.

This is the second book in Keller’s Second Chances in Harmony Springs series. You will likely want to read the series in order, as a number of characters in the first book show up in this one. I really liked the book, even more than the first one, as there isn’t as much violence in this one. There are heart-wrenching plot twists, but they are balanced by wonderful characters, good spiritual lessons learned by many of the characters, and second chances for more than one couple. I’m glad I decided to give the author a second chance!

This is a story that brought tears and smiles as the story unfolded in an even flow. The characters lives were not pretty with the variety of flaws known to mankind, but nothing is impossible in God’s timing. Lydia’s and Samuel’s compassion for others gave way to letting go and caring for the less fortunate during some of the most difficult times Harmony Springs experienced. The story is filled with a beautiful message about forgiveness, healing from betrayal, second chances and God’s love shining bright as He is allowed to mend broken lives.

The References Second Chance

A love story with trials of life. Samuel and Lydia were childhood sweethearts. Before Sam left for the Seminary, he comprised Lydia. He did not know he left her pregnant. She tried to contact him thru his parents, but the answer he did not claim the baby as his. So to prevent her ruined virtue Lydia married his best friend Frank. She had a baby girl.
The story weaves thru their lives and Sam becomes the pastor where Lydia now lives as a widower and school teacher.
Wonderful story, enjoyed the characters. The virtue of forgiveness is greatly shown in their lives.

Harmony Springs has a new full-time pastor, Samuel Allen. A time for blessing until introduced to Lydia Jefferson, his former fiancé. Choices made before he headed for seminary still haunt him, but he never expected to be confronted with them. Lydia has lost a husband and a daughter and has no intentions of forgiving for the past.

Will a life of joy still be possible for these two tortured souls? Forgiveness will set the stage for a life of unexpected happiness. An early copy was received through Wild Heart Books and BookFunnel. These impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.

The Reverend’s Second Chance

Lydia and Sam have such a marvelous second chance story. They had been engaged when he went off to seminary. While he was at seminary she left without a trace. Their paths now cross in Harmony Springs. Instead of a joyful reunion, it is one of unease and angst. When they get caught in a snowstorm unexpectedly and are forced to wed, things get even more uncomfortable. I highly recommend you read their story.

I enjoyed this second installment in the Harmony Springs series. Teacher Lydia and Pastor Samuel were childhood sweethearts who were separated by a misunderstanding. They reconnect again 7 years later in Harmony Springs and this leads to a marriage of convenience that ultimately turns to love. Similar to Book 1, this book was more of a drama than a RomCom but ultimately, it was an uplifting story of second chance love.
