Meghan O'Connor, an Irish Catholic coal miner's daughter from a small Pennsylvania coal town, defies her family and church when she falls in love with David Lang, heir to the Lang fortune and a member of the ruling Protestant faction
Elaine Barbieri wrote over thirty historical novels that have been published worldwide. She was certain young adult readers would enjoy the excitement of historical romance if given a chance, and she welcomed the opportunity to write Miranda and the Warrior for this new audience. Elaine lived in northern New Jersey with her husband and family, and with Harrison, a demanding male who she is sure would be the ultimate hero -- if he weren't a cat.
This book dragged on too much IMO. The heroine is only 14 years old when the book opens, not even a mature 14 but a tiny girl who looks way younger than that. More than halfway into the book, she turns 15... how much passion or love could you possibly see in someone this young? It doesn't help that the hero is only 4 years older, someone who is little too idealistic, juvenile and naive, I felt like the 14 year old heroine was more mature than this boy.
But anyway, this book is more about what goes on in the mining town and it's politics than about any passionate love between these two. Despite it perking my interest in the beginning, it all became little too repetitive for my taste...
I wasn't able to finish this book, because it became a utter chore to read it.
Very nicely researched - almost more of a history read than a romance novel. Excellent depiction of the mines and how the poor Irish immigrants suffered in them, and how living out in the middle of nowhere put them at the mercy of the owners.
