As Kamala discovers more about her past, the Inventor threatens her future. Why is Lockjaw really with Kamala? The fan-favorite series continues as Kamala proves why she's the best (and most adorable) new super hero there is!
Hugo, World Fantasy and American Book Award-winning author of novels and comics, including THE BIRD KING, INVISIBLE KINGDOM, and ALIF THE UNSEEN. Co-creator of Ms Marvel. Honorary doctor of letters, Rutgers University. I accidentally started a dutch baby baking cult during quarantine. Not very active on here right now, but often found on Twitter.
I’m starting to view Medusa of the Inhumans as Marvel’s version of Hawkman – whenever she shows up, the comic takes a downwards turn!
In Ms Marvel #9, Kamala is battling a giant robot who’s attacked her school. Then she’s transported by Lockjaw to New Attilan where she discovers that she’s an Inhuman (or Nuhuman)! But Kamala’s home is New Jersey, not New Attilan, and she breaks out to take down the Inventor herself, with Lockjaw in tow.
I suppose if you’re unfamiliar with the Inhumans, this issue does a decent job of informing you about them, from what an Inhuman is, what New Attilan is and why it’s floating in the middle of the Hudson, and who Medusa is. Though if you already know this stuff, like me, it’s a bit of a yawner to re-read. And, while I realise some readers like Medusa, she seems a bit too one-dimensional and uninteresting for my liking.
Nothing terribly amazing happens in this issue – Kamala beats the robot, like we’ve seen her do before, there’s an Inhuman interlude, and then we’re back into the Inventor storyline with a weird twist on the final page. Normally I’m more enthusiastic about the series but this issue is the first where I’ve read it and not felt anything much about it. It’s G Willow Wilson hitting the same notes as if ticking off boxes – family trouble, Inventor, superhero stuff, boy, done.
Kamala’s integration into the current Marvel Universe continues successfully though she still retains her individuality within it. She’s had encounters with Wolverine and the Inhumans but she’s held her own in fights rather than lean on them, and she has her own mission and goals separate to everyone else. Take Lockjaw, who could take out the Inventor himself if he wanted, who’s allowed to be a sidekick only, ceding the spotlight to Kamala because it’s her comic. And I really love that. Plus, Lockjaw’s always adorable!
Ms Marvel #9 is an ok issue, it’s just not as spectacular as the others have been. An unusual dip in quality.
I LOVED THIS ISSUE!!! I was basically this chick in the background the entire time I was reading it:
Why did I love this issue so much? Medusa, Queen of the Fucking Inhumans, wrapped her glorious, prehensile mane of red hair around Kamala to protect her while teleporting EVEN THOUGH HER PREVIOUS CONTACT WITH KAMALA WAS JUST A PICTURE OF HER EATING A GYRO. Bruno sprinted and leaped over a damn cop to be near Kamala when she got hurt. Star Wars references. Kamala finally learned she was an Inhuman and left Attilan against Medusa's wishes, and her doctor didn't even stop her fully knowing Medusa and her glorious hair will kick his ass. People pointing out the sacrifices Kamala is making to beat the inventor, one which is probably even diminishing her powers, that she can't keep being so reckless and endangering herself. Kamala then being reckless and finding out something super important about the kids being used as the Inventor's stash. ALSO KAMALA HAS A STUFFED ANIMAL OF A WINGED TWO-TOED SLOTH IN HER ROOM AND I WANT ONE
HOLY MOLY WHAT THE FUDGE WAS THAT okay the ending was absolutely stunning and i'm shook I love Lockjaw and am so excited for a little bonus insight in the Inhuman universe and Attilan.
Okay, so this issue made me fall in love with Lockjaw. I also loved Bruno in this issue and his friendship with Kamala is one of my new favourites of all time. I loved that we got to know more about Kamala’s powers in this issue and we also got some more family time in this one. It’s also furthering the overall plot really well, in my opinion.
Kamala has to find herself... and we learn more about her with her. Not only she's an "alien" in the USA because of her heritage, but apparently, she's an actual alien. Or is she? We also get to know a bit more about Bruno. A glimpse. But sometimes an image, or an action, tells tons. This issue felt more like an introductory text into the actual 'finding who I am and what is my purpose in life' plot that seems to come, though it is interesting to see how Kamala is still that stubborn teenager and how she is starting to take responsabilities for her acts. No doubt a mark of maturity and an important thing to take into account for the future adventures and problems she may face. Can't wait to see her back into action... and to see how she deals with the duality of her persona now.
The more I read Ms Marvel the more I love it! This issue has its fair share not just of action but of information and even a surprising twist or two.
Once again Kamala tries to balance her crime fighting with her personal life. Once again she doesn't quite succeed but since when has that ever stopped her?
I'm sure long term fans of Marvel comics will better recognize some of the terms here as well as a character who makes more of an appearance in this issue but newer fans like me might end up feeling like they are a bit late to the party.
Still this is another great issue. Ms Marvel continues to impress.
This is probably the most boring issue yet, which sucks because the last one was A-mazing! The part with Medusa was dull, and . . . didn't click. The issue didn't seem to blend well with the rest of the story until the end. Which sucks because I hate it when a story is going smoothly and suddenly I'm kicked out of the story waiting for things to blend again.
This comic has quickly become one of my absolute favorites, and it's easy to see why: Kamala Khan. She's an amazing character; brave, but scared, and trying to do her damnedest even when she's not sure what that is.
Add in the fact that the plotline with the Inventor is going places, and becoming genuinely intriguing, and I'm so gung-ho about this right now.
5 stars for the whole series and for Kamala Khan as a superhero. 4 for this particular issue, which was a teensy bit less fantastic than others have been - the perhaps necessary Inhumans exposition lessens the excitement and fun of earlier issues. But back up to 5 for Kamala's weird stuffed winged sloth. I'm all about that.
The plot thickens! This issue also gives you more information about the Inhumans, which is handy if you don't know this stuff. Like me. Also gives a name to the flame haired lady, Medusa. Going to look her up now...
The Inventor is still at large and I really hope Kamala puts an end to him soon. I don't want him to become her major nemesis. The new Ms. Marvel deserves someone better as a foe.
