Wax on....
Jen Nakamura Taylor thought she left behind her awkward past of growing up half-Japanese, half-white in a small Southern town when she moved north to produce a popular Chicago television show. But when she gets word that her Southern Belle cousin is marrying Kevin Peterson, the very boy Jen loved-with-a-capital-L for years, she realizes she can't run from her past forever. Not only does the news conjure up sticky memories of growing up with a mixed heritage in the South (soy sauce on chicken fried steak, anyone?) but now the very single and very busy Jen has got to find a date for the wedding -- a grand affair that could put Scarlett O'Hara to shame.
Wax off....
Riley -- Jen's cute British friend from work -- seems just the ticket; even his girlfriend thinks it's a good idea. But as Jen and Riley whistle on down to Dixie, sparks start to fly. Add to the fire the grown-up but still charming Kevin Peterson, who appears to have a soft spot for Jen, and, well, whoa. It's going to take everything Jen has (and a lot of help from the Karate Kid -wisdom of her pop culture hero Mr. Miyagi) to survive the meeting of past and present, and of North and Far East and South...where Jen finally learns to come to terms with her heritage, her love life, and herself.

I've written more than 30 books in a number of genres: chick lit, romance, suspense, paranormal and young adult. My debut novel, I Do (But I Don't) was made into a Lifetime Original movie.

I grew up in Mesquite, Texas, which for those of you who like livestock shows, is the home of the Mesquite Rodeo. Ironically, Mesquite was named after Mesquite trees, only none of them now exist in the city, which is about fifteen minutes east of Dallas. No, I don't own a pair of cowboy boots, although I do own quite an impressive collection of black shoes. My Dad is a third-generation Japanese-American, and my mom is a second-generation Texan who's mostly English.

I went to school at the University of Pennsylvania, only I'm not sure how I got in. I think these days they only accept students who can solve String Theory. Anyway, I majored in English, and because my dad said "and just what are you going to do with an English degree?" I went to work for the school newspaper. After college, I spent four years as a newspaper reporter, working for an overly excitable editor who sent me running anytime the police scanner went off. I was working insane hours for next to no pay. I was actually sent to cover a grass fire on my 25th Birthday. Let me tell you, it smelled bad. I think some mice may have lost their lives. But that was about it in terms of excitement. Happy Birthday to Me.

So, I decided after I had taken to hiding from my editor in the bathroom at the office anytime the police scanner went off, that journalism probably wasn't for me. I went to work for a marketing firm and discovered that most everyone else didn't stay until ten o'clock every night writing up their riveting story about grass fires. I also decided that I would take advantage of that free time to write some fiction. That's when I started writing "I Do (But I Don't)." A year later, I finished it, thanks to the help of my friend, Shannon, who wouldn't let me slack off and kept asking me for chapters.

And that's how I became a writer. Except that it still feels weird to say, "I'm a writer." I keep expecting to wake up tomorrow and have to go cover another grass fire.

I'm married and live with a blended broad of seven near Chicago, where I'm hard at work on my next book!

This is by far one of my favorite Cars Lockwood stories!! It tells a story of a young Asian girl growing up in the south and flashes between present day and the 80’s, her childhood years!! Every chapter starts with a Mr. Miyagi (from The Karate Kid movies) quote. Reading the flashback chapters brought me right back to my childhood, and I loved that! There are some great laugh out loud moments in this book! Definitely a good read❣️

Jen Nakamura Taylor grew up half-Japanese in the very white Southern town of Dixieland, Arkansas. Although she was a bit of an oddity (their family ate sushi when everyone else was eating barbecue), it never affected her much until she moved to Chicago and realized just how different she was from her friends and acquaintances of the past. Jen is content with her life, producing a news program and working more hours than she cares to admit. Yet when she finds out that her beautiful blonde cousin is marrying Kevin Peterson, the object of Jen's unrequited love all through school, she isn't quite sure what to think. She does know one thing--she must find a date for the wedding.

Following a series of interesting events, Jen ends up taking Nigel Riley, her best friend and confidante at work. Riley is British and has a drop-dead gorgeous live-in girlfriend who actually encourages him to go to the wedding with Jen. They begin the long trip with a disastrous car-ride and end up thinking that there may be more to their relationship than just friendship. When Kevin begins to show a bit of interest all these years later, is it just a complication or does Jen actually have her choice of men?

Dixieland Sushi is an hilarious relationship novel. Jen is a unique character, working hard to overcome her small-town past, but also not wanting to stray too far from her roots. The narrative is sprinkled with various flashbacks to the 1980s and Jen's growing-up years, the trials and tribulations of her crush on Kevin. The '80s pop culture references are both funny and nostalgic, as many chick lit readers remember this era fondly.

The development of the relationship between Riley and Jen progresses at a natural and believable pace. A rolling-on-the-floor laughing segment about their stop in Memphis and visit to Graceland will leave you breathless. Readers who enjoy chick lit will savor Dixieland Sushi because, like its main character, it offers a different take on the standard fare.

What I liked
1) Humorous treatment of the sensitive topic of race in middle America (the h is part Japanese)
2) The description of the h's weird family - apart from the racial aspects, there were some funny characters in the family

What I did not enjoy
1) The romance was WEAK. I wasn't actually sure I even liked the dude. After all, I barely knew him.
2) There was so much space given to the role of race in the main character that there wasn't that much space to talk about her actual personality
3) Seemed like it was trying to be an homage to 90s teenage movies like Karate Kid and the Breakfast Club - which is probably great if you identify with those movies and that time, but honestly, I find movies about teenagers to be boring and I can never understand the source of all their angst so these references did very little for me.

I’ve had this book for years. It’s traveled with me to grad school and on my move to Texas. Through two apartments here to my house. I found a bookmark inside from Spain, and I went to Spain in 2006. Something about the cover and the title of this book have kept me hanging onto this well after I’ve forgotten anything about it. I’m sure I finished it back in the day…?

I was about to unhaul this book when I thought, “why have I kept this around all these years?” I decided I needed to revisit it before I could say farewell. And I’m glad I did.

This book just made me happy. I loved that you got to see lots of the love part of friends-to-lovers instead of them just getting together at the end. It was a quick read, and I enjoyed it!

Full of humor and references to both the radical 1980s and wise Mr. Miyagi, author Cara Lockwood knocked this one out of the park. During flashbacks to her school years, the protagonist channels all the awkwardness every schoolgirl has ever experienced while trying to figure who she is. Only for Jen, who is half Japanese and grew up in the South (just like the author!), the answer to that question is a bit more complicated than for most. With her cousin marrying her childhood crush, Jen must face her roots and awkward preteen years once more, leading to a plethora of ridiculous moments that will keep you laughing and turning the page for more.

Probably overly generous, but it had me laughing so hard it took a few tries to finish a page. Fun, some interesting thoughts on mixed race, and a lot of 80s nostalgia. After some of the miserable books I’ve read recently, this just hit the spot. The right book at the right time.

I own this book and have read it a few times over the years. It's cute, sweet, and funny. I re-read it recently after lending it to a friend, and the book still holds up pretty well. A few parts seem dated just to technology and of course the time periods referenced, but still a delightful read.

Interesting to read an older book that treats today’s social justice issues with humor. It still takes the issues seriously, but pokes fun at people on both sides. Other than that, a mostly funny and cute chick lit story.

I enjoyed this book starting with the characters, their banter, the sweet relationships, family chaos, and funny drama. It was a fun book to read and kept me rooting for the main character to the very last page.

I found this book hilarious. It was light reading and entertaining. A perfect beach read. The throwback 1980s references were spot on and made me laugh out loud.

This book was cute. I liked the characters and the chapters that took place in the 80's. I could relate to what Jen went through as a teen.

Cover-nya menarik bukan?

Nah.. nah.. waktunya membahas kekurangan ^^.

Notes from BookCrossing: I love to read junk food when I travel, and this book seemed like the perfect candidate when I was packing for this business trip. I'm in the NY/NJ area for the week, and read this book all day yesterday. It was a great accompaniment to iffy Denver weather and not knowing if I'd get out of town or not! I did, and just in time -- my husband said they had almost a foot of snow!

Yeah, it's lite and it's chick lit, but I really enjoyed this one! Sure, it's formulaic, but it's still very entertaining. It was also sooooo 80s, I loved it :) The Japanese-Southern-American version of Bridget Jones in this book was really well drawn, I thought, and even though a lot of the supporting cast were charicatures, they were all very fun to read.

This author has some great wry and witty words. "If fate were kind and sympathetic, the roller rink would have been the last time I saw Kevin Peterson. But fate is neither kind nor sympathetic." I love that they call Riley "The Colins", and a variety of other funny things. . .

I did notice (surprise, surprise) a couple of errors in this one, but the best one was the "throws of passion" on pg. 181. LOL!

There were some very touching parts in this, too -- the parts about the Japanese internment camps, especially. I was glad to see them in there -- it added a touch of depth that many chicklits lack.

Anyone who remembers the 80's will laugh out loud reading Dixieland Sushi. Jen Nakumura Taylor is a TV News producer in Chicago but she has to make a road trip back home for her cousin Lucy's wedding in Dixieland. Jen drags her friend Riley (aka The Collins for his resemblance to both Firth and Farrell) to the wedding. Throughout the trip she recalls growing up in her half Japanese half white family in the South. She also reminisces about Mr. Miyagi, jelly shoes, friendship bracelets, Dallas and Kevin Gibson, her first crush. Kevin will also be at the wedding because he happens to be the groom! Scandal is sure to ensue.

I knew I would love the book after reading the first page involving roller-skating, Queen and sushi. Lockwood alternates the story between present day and the 80's with ease. Her writing style is light and fun. Perfect novel to put you in a good mood.

I know this book is part of the "chick lit" genre, a phrase I really hate. But this fell short even of the traditional chick lit requirements. Okay, it had all of the required events (girl likes boy, they come together in a semi-plausible circumstance, they fall in bed, they fall in love, they have a conflict, they make up and live happily ever after), but this book made it all too easy. The fall in bed, the morning after isn't awkward and they confess their feelings for each other almost immediately. The conflict is that someone else kisses her and he walks in. They make up immediately, but he has to go somewhere, he comes back and boom! Happy ever after. No, this was way too easy. Not even interesting conflict. No.

This book was certainly interesting. It was nice to read about an interracial inter cultural relationship. the author gave her characters fun personalities which were fun to read. There was a lot of eighties references and those were also integrated well and they added to the story. I do have a big gripe with the story though. I don't like it when guys in books are weak and the guy in this book was really weak. as a friendship it was okay as a budding romance it was awkward and as a relationship it was cringe worthy. the end of the book was the worst part of all. Nobody likes to feel like they are second choice or an afterthought and that's how it felt the guy was treating the girl. other than that it was a decent read.

i read 'i do but i dont' and i thought it's goanna be as good as this one...but what a major let down....this book has so much potential..the story is real common in the fiction scence but Cara has a knack for making ordinary things great..why 2? i hate how the story keeps going to the past! i mean that made the story bland.i keep skipping to the present so it was a really fast read..i love the story! i really do i just hate how some of the part does not attract me like it should,... (SIGH) like i said the story is amazing i just hope she just stick to the present part cause honestly why the hell would she even go the the past when something interesting is happening in the present???....

Padahal, menurutku nggak sampai segitunya deh. Hemm. Pokoknya, aku kurang sreg baca novel ini. Deuh. Apa sebenernya aku yang nggak cocok baca contemporary romance ya???

Hm... I would have to say that this book is very formulaic. The writing is horrible at times and the story un believable. It's very chick lit and not deep... at all. I didn't come away any better for reading this book. But I also didn't come away any worse.

I bought it for a beach read in Hawaii two weeks ago. Finished it quickly and immediately started reading something with a little more substance. And by 'a little more' I mean some, any type of substance.

But I'm sure some people like these brain numbing books. :)))

A tale of a girl growing up half Japanses and Half White in Dixieland, Arkansas. Jen has a penchant for all things Karate Kid and quotes Mr. Miyagi faithfully (every chapter begins with a quote from him).

Jen has flown the coop of Dixieland long ago - but must return home for her cousin's wedding and hilarity ensues.

A nice amusing fluffy read complete with a road trip to Graceland and the United Colors of Benetton of Elvises or would that be Elvi?

Nice - made me laugh out loud several times!

It's an okay read though it tends to be boring at times. I decided to read this since its title really interests me but i was disappointed with this one since i'm expecting something extravagant to happen or there is a certain twist on the story but i'm definitely wrong. It has a very predictable plot and i can't relate much to the stuffs that's happening on the story since it has little flashbacks on the 80's time and i'm not definitely an 80's baby. Though predictable, some parts are still fun and cute but that's it, Not much to say since i'm not really satisfied with it. hehe. :p

Fluff, but very funny fluff. I wish, though, if she were going to make so many cultural 80's references, they would have been proofread a little better. Who is Trudy from the Facts of Life? I can only assume she meant Tootie, and I believe it's Jon Cryer, not Crier, and I remember stumbling across a few more errors like that, and of course now I can't find them. I know, I'm being picky. Good overall
