I ‘discovered’ Christophe Arleston earlier this year, through his rather silly portal fantasy comic Ekho monde mirroir . I liked his unbound imagination, his sharp and irreverent satire reminding me of Mad magazine and of the Monthy Python series. I also loved the artwork of that parallel world that offers a skewed mirror of our modern technology.
So it was an easy decision to check out his earlier and more more popular high fantasy comic about a simple teenage boy who sets out on a grand adventure. Lanfeust of Troy plays fast and loose with a lot of genre tropes, but in general stays true to high fantasy standards.



The artwork of Didier Tarquin and the lurid color scheme of the series took some getting used to, but the humorous subversion of my expectations and the romantic advances of the fiery brunette Cixi soon convinced me to continue reading. The raw quality of the character drawings and the ugly esthetics that are pervasive to the whole series are balanced, I believe, by the richness of world building, by the often detailed cityscapes and natural habitats and by the incredibly diverse monsters encountered by Lanfeust and his friends on the journey. Cixi is quite the pin-up poster girl, too.
When, a little later in the first issue, the bloodthirsty troll Hebus was added to the main cast, I knew I was on to a rollicking good time, of the silly persuasion.



As usual this year, I prefer to read more albums instead of reviewing each individual episode. This makes a synopsis of the plot rather difficult, but I think fans of the high fantasy epics will not be disappointed by the twists and turns in the quest, by the dastardly deeds of the evil mastermind that hunts Lanfeust for his special magic powers, and by the romantic entanglements that the young apprentice falls into as he hesitates between the angelic blue dressed C’yan and the devilishly attractive red wearing Cixi.



The original Lanfeust of Troy series has 8 full albums [50+ pages], published in English translation by Soleil, with a later added ninth that I haven’t read yet.
I plan to read the two sequels: Lanfeust of the Stars and Lanfeust Odyssey as soon as I can order them.

Je ne pense pas l’être tout le temps, mais cette fois c’est sûr, je ne vais pas être objectif. Il y a, pour l’instant, trois grandes périodes dans ma vie de lecteur de bandes dessinées. D’abord l’enfance avec Tintin un peu, Gaston Lagaffe beaucoup et surtout Astérix. Puis l’âge adulte avec des titres comme Maus ou Watchmen puis la découverte de ce que l’on appelle la bande dessinée indépendante. Et au milieu, une période d’adolescence dont la série emblématique est et restera Lanfeust de Troy. Je ne dois pas être le seul à avoir été marqué par cette série si l’on se réfère à deux indicateurs indirects: le prix de l’édition originale du premier tome (de 200 à 300 euros) et le budget du Racing Club Toulonnais (22 M€ en 2013).

Pourquoi a-t-elle rencontré un tel succès ? Peut-être parce que ses créateurs ont su appliquer les recettes du passé. Ne pourrait-on pas voir en Lanfeust de Troy un Asterix moderne ? Les similitudes sont pourtant nombreuses. Tout d’abord de très beaux dessins, appliqués, très fins aux décors précis fourmillants de détails. Ensuite, et même s’ils évoluent autour d’autres personnages, nous avons bien un couple de héros personnifié par Lanfeust et Hébus que nous pouvons allègrement comparer à nos deux gaulois. Comme Asterix, Lanfeust a besoin d’un produit dopant pour déchaîner toute sa puissance, il n’utilise pas une potion, mais le pouvoir du Magohamoth. Hébus lui est tombé dedans quand il était petit puisque c’est un Troll et qu’un Troll est un personnage très costaud avec une propension à distribuer des baffes, enfin plutôt des coups de gourdin bien violents ayant des conséquences bien plus gore que des petits oiseaux tournoyants autour de la tête des romains. N’oublions pas enfin un humour potache omniprésent – mais assumé – qui se manifeste entre autre comme chez Goscinny et Uderzo par un détournement des noms propres – cet exercice semble être devenu une tradition, un public joke. Je m’arrête là, mais je suis sûr qu’il y a matière à approfondir. Si un étudiant en littérature comparée cherche un sujet de thèse en voici un sortant des sentiers battus.

Lanfeust de Troy est donc, comme son ancêtre, une série grand public conçue pour le divertissement. Malgré ce côté classique, elle propose un univers de fantasy original et bien ficelé, le bestiaire est vraiment enthousiasmant et le système de magie convaincant. Cette série fait partie de celles que j’aime lire et relire et qui me redonne systématiquement le sourire. Comme tout amateur, j’ai mes moments préférés. A l’instar de la lecture d’un Tour de Gaule, je suis toujours impatient de relire Cixi impératrice avec sa visite au palais des dieux tous plus originaux les uns que les autres. Comme toutes les oeuvres populaires, cette série est dénigrée par certains. Je trouve au contraire qu’elle atteint parfaitement son objectif: donner du plaisir au lecteur. Bravo messieurs.

While I understand the popularity of the "héroic fantasy" genre of franco-belgian bande-dessinée and can appreciate its importance, Lanfeust is a little more (less?) than I can handle. The rampant sexism combined with the flimsy storyline (and the early death of my favorite character) create a book that I could have lived my entire life without reading. Yes, magic powers and alternate universes are pretty cool. They're also no longer original or groundbreaking; in fact, they've become a bit trite. Though this series is remarkably popular (no doubt due to the young male fantasy crowd), it is evident in the first book that its popularity is very loosely, if at all, correlated with its literary or artistic value.

This is one of the best heroic fantasy graphic novel I've read in a while (and I've read a ton recently).

There is a definite quality to this volume in terms of plot and writing. The story is engaging and already very developped in the very first issue as opposed to other BD which take 2 or 3 volumes to get going.

The story is interesting and the characters are not the usual cardboard pieces we usually get in these stories.

Major but however : while at first I did appreciate the openly sexual side of this comic (nice to see not only the male MC but also female characters that have desires), it goes way too far. The character of Cixi is the main problem : she is characterised like a sexual neurotic (seriously, Freud would have had a field day).

There definitely seems to be a problem with her depiction and the depiction of female characters more generally (with her sister who is of course the demure, naive typical female character) that seems to border on sexism. We shall see how that turns out in the next issues.

J'ai vraiment passé un super moment en compagnie des personnage de cette BD, l'humour est au rendez-vous et l'histoire est assez intéressante dans ce monde de Troy où tout le monde possède un pouvoir unique! Mais que va-t-il arriver lorsqu'un personne se trouve en possession de tous les pouvoirs?

Für so einen alten westlichen Comic, gefällt mir der Zeichenstil ziemlich gut, und es ist auch überraschend brutal. Vermutlich auch extrem fantasievoll, was die Welt und Lore angeht - leider ist der aber aus einer Zeit, bei dem die weiblichen Figuren nur in 2 Versionen existieren: Vers. 1: Unschuldig, zart, rein ; Vers. 2: will alles vögeln, was bei 3 nicht auf den Bäumen ist und hat kaum was an.
Daher nach Band 1 abgebrochen, weil ich mir das echt nicht antun muss.

This was a good bit of fun, sadly it has yet to get an English translation.
A fantasy world where every person has one power ranging from benign to badass sees one young man, our protagonist, realize he can access every power when he touches ivory. The overarching goal of the series isn’t super clear one book in but we’re definitely heading into that chosen one trope territory so you can kind of map it out. There’s some fan service and sexism that stand out but generally it’s great action and humour that left the greater impression. The art is beautiful and dynamic, doing it’s share of the storytelling and excelling whenever there’s action scenes. I’m very excited to read more!

J'attaque enfin la collection des Lanfeust (j'ai une 60aine de tomes à la maison, j'avais craqué pour la collection publié chez le marchand de journaux avec les dos qui forment une belle frise ^^
Bon, c'était très sympa (heureusement vu le pognon que j'ai foutu dedans lol) mais je vais fermer les yeux sur le sexisme rampant (c'est sorti en 1994 on va dire...) pour continuer de profiter du reste.
Si on oublie ce gros point noir, c'est fun, dépaysant, parfois classique, parfois inventif, et globalement joli à voir.

Dit was wel geinig. Hevig geleend van Star Wars en/of Joseph Campbell, maar dat at mag de pret niet drukken. En die pret presenteert zich met name in Cixi. Een van de twee lustobjecten die om de aandacht van Lanfeust strijden. Haar kont is minstens om de twee pagina's prominent in beeld en mij hoor je niet klagen. Wat dag betreft ben ik een echte feminist.

Νοσταλγικό fantasy

Mέσα σε τρομακτικά δύσκολες συνθήκες για τις έντυπες εκδόσεις, και δη τις καταστάσεις εξαίρεσης εν μέσω πανδημίας, χρειαζόταν θάρρος για να βγουν νέα κόμικ. Πολλοί το έκαναν, όπως έχει ειπωθεί άλλωστε και σε συζήτηση του σάιτ μας. Ανάμεσα σε αυτούς ήταν και μια ιδιαίτερη σύμπραξη, αυτή της ΛΕ.ΦΙ.Κ (Λέσχη Φίλων Κόμικς) και των εκδόσεων Οξύ, για το πρώτο κεφάλαιο του κλασικού γαλλικού κόμικ φαντασίας Ο Λανφέστ του Τρόυ: Το Φίλντισι του Μαγόχαμοθ.

Παρόλο που η χώρα μας ως επί το πλείστον, μεγάλωσε επηρεασμένη από τα έργα της γαλλοβελγικής σχολής, η αισθητική της οποίας δέσποζε στην κεντρική και νότια Ευρώπη, υπάρχει μια ουσιώδη έλλειψη στο πως αυτός ο τρόπος σχεδίασης και αφήγησης εφαρμόστηκε σε άλλα είδη, λιγότερο βατά για το ευρύ κοινό ή με λιγότερο χιούμορ και εκφραστική δεινότητα από τους Γαλάτες του René Goscinny.

To Λανφέστ του Τρόυ (Lanfeust of Troy) σε σενάριο του Christophe Arleston και σχέδιο του Didier Tarquin είναι ένα τέτοιο παράδειγμα, ειδικά για τους μικρότερους σε ηλικία, καθώς πρωτοδημοσιεύτηκε το 1994.

Τα καθαρόαιμα heroic fantasy στοιχεία, οι χιουμοριστικοί αναχρονισμοί, η έντονη δράση και οι ζωντανοί, ευφάνταστοι χαρακτήρες που δίνονται μέσα από τις σελίδες του έκαναν τη σειρά αυτή αγαπημένη πολλών, με αποτέλεσμα να υπάρξουν ποικίλες μεταφορές της, τόσο σε animation, όσο και σε ηλεκτρονικά παιχνίδια.

Κοιτώντας τον πρώτο τόμο που κυκλοφόρησε στα ελληνικά (σε μετάφραση του Γιώργου Μακρυνάκη) καταλαβαίνει κανείς γιατί. Το Λανφέστ είναι ένα κόμικ που οι φίλοι της επικής φαντασίας θα απολαύσουν καθώς, παρά την τάση του για διακωμώδηση, δεν απομακρύνεται ποτέ από τα tropes του είδους, ειδικά όπως αυτά διαπλάστηκαν τη δεκαετία του ’90 στην Ευρώπη. Γενικότερα μπορεί να πει κανείς ότι το fantasy, περνώντας την κριτική του περίοδο νωρίτερα στα χέρια συγγραφέων όπως ο βρετανός Michael Moorcock, επέστρεψε στις πιο συντηρητικές του ρίζες την παράδοξη δεκαετία του 1990, διανθισμένο όμως από τις λογικές των RPG, που, ειρωνικά, το ίδιο είχε επηρεάσει. Έτσι ο όλος κόσμος του Τρόι φαντάζει σαν μια παράδοξη, αλλά απολαυστική, επαναφορά του ταξιδιού του εκλεκτού ήρωα, ο οποίος, έχοντας μια φύση ανθρώπινα ευάλωτη, καταφέρνει να σώσει φίλους και εχθρούς κόντρα στο απόλυτο κακό.

Ο πρώτος τόμος είναι καθαρά εισαγωγικός, ωστόσο καταφέρνει με μεγάλη επιδεξιότητα να μας γνωρίσει τον κόσμο του Τρόυ. Ένα μέρος μαγικό, κυριολεκτικά και μεταφορικά, με τους δικούς τους νόμους, κινδύνους και τέρατα. Πολύ γρήγορα ο αναγνώστης νιώθει περιέργια για τα πλάσματα και τις συνθήκες αυτής της παράδοξης συνθήκης, θέλει να τα δει αλλά και την ίδια στιγμή νιώθει την απειλεί που αποπνέουν.

Είναι μια ιστορία παρηγοριάς και ανακούφισης από ένα παρελθόν που η νοσταλγία το έχει οριακά αγιοποιήσει, παρά τα πολλά προβλήματά του.

Βέβαια, κοιτώντας τις γενικότερες συνθήκες και την επαναπροσέγγιση των ιστοριών με τις οποίες μεγαλώσαμε από ένα κριτικό πρίσμα, θα λέγαμε πως ίσως η επιλογή της έκδοσης του Λανφέστ τώρα, παρά τις καλές της προθέσεις, να μην ήταν και η βέλτιστη. Αν εξαιρεθεί το φρέσκο, ζωντανό σκίτσο του Didier Tarquin, τα γήινα χρώματα του Mateo Livi και οι υποδειγματικές σκιές δια χειρός Cyril Vincent, η ίδια η ιστορία και το χιούμορ του σεναρίου δεν εντυπωσιάζουν. Την ίδια στιγμή δεν μπορεί να αγνοηθεί η σκοποφιλική χρήση πολλών σκηνών, κάτι που δεν αλλάζει ούτε στα επόμενα τεύχη.

Το κομμάτι της έκδοσης έχει επίσης κάποια παραπτώματα, όπως ασυμφωνίες χρόνων στη μετάφραση ή κάποιες παρατυπίες με το lettering. Ωστόσο αυτά δεν επηρεάζουν τη γενική ανάγνωση.

Επιλογικά, παρόλο που το Ο Λανφέστ του Τρόυ: Το Φίλντισι του Μαγόχαμοθ έρχεται από το παρελθόν για να μας γεμίσει νοσταλγία, τις ιστορίες που φέρνει πλέον πρέπει να τις ακούμε με προσοχή.

Ein äußerst vergnüglicher Fantasy-Klassiker auf den Spuren von Loisels "Vogel der Zeit". Nur gefällt mir der pubertäre Humor hier irgendwie besser. Eine unbedingte Empfehlung an jeden, der knuffige, warme Fantasy mag, mit einer Portion Blut und Sex auf dem sonst eher an Asterix gemahnenden Treiben. Viel erfährt man dabei noch nicht, doch ist die illustre Truppe, die sich im verlauf des Bandes formt doch selber schon interessant genug, um Lut auf mehr zu machen.

Lanfeust de Troy ! LA saga d’heroic fantasy. L’aventure, les blagues, le pouvoir, les belles filles et les trolls, tout ce qui faut pour lancer dès 1994 les bases d’un des plus gros succès de la BD.

Pour les néophytes, je vais tout de même vous planter le décor. Troy est une planète peuplée d’humains, de trolls, et investit d’un bestiaire qui lui est propre. Chaque humain est doté d’un pouvoir, plus ou moins pratique, qui ne peut être utilisé que lorsque qu’un sage d’Eckmül est à proximité. Certains pouvoir sont plus puissants, mais la distribution est assez aléatoire. On passe du pouvoir de guérison à la capacité de provoquer des démangeaisons, en passant par la téléportation ou la pousse des cheveux. L’histoire commence dans un petit village un peu perdu, lorsqu’un apprenti forgeron (son pouvoir est de faire fondre le métal) rencontre un chevalier de passage. Ce chevalier possède une épée ancienne, léguée de générations en générations, dont le pommeau serait issu d’une bête fantastique : le Magohamoth. A son contact, le jeune apprenti Lanfeust entre en possession du pouvoir absolu, qui lui donne accès à n’importe quel pouvoir, et ce sans aucun relais nécessaire. De là, le sage du village, ses 2 filles, Lanfeust, et un troll apprivoisé en route, partent vers la capitale Eckmül, phare de la civilisation de Troy, pour tenter de comprendre le phénomène…

On est ici en présence d’une bonne vieille saga, qui est un beau succès commercial et qui a largement influencé le monde de la BD (par exemple, la maison d’édition Soleil s’est largement fait connaitre grâce à cette seule série). Difficile donc de lui donner moins de 4 étoiles, même si ses détracteurs diront que l’histoire est plutôt banale et sans grand intérêt, surmonté d’un humour douteux. Il ne faut pas écouter ces gens. Du moins, ça vaut la peine de lire une fois ce grand classique. Suite à ce succès, il y a les mondes étendus de Troy (Lanfeust des Etoiles, Lanfeust Odyssey, Gnomes de Troy, Trolls de Troy, Les Conquérants de Troy), qui feront très plaisir aux fans de la première heure mais qui tirent parfois beaucoup sur la corde, ou dont les jeux de mots priment quelquefois sur le scénario.

A marvelous fantasy bande dessinee in the vein of Quest for the Time Bird, and part of a rich French tradition.

Colorful, humorous, lively, and above all inventive, this book has everything a fantastic adventure requires. Highlights include a giant wooly yak-beast that will only move when sung to, a horde of ravenous little monsters that eat everything in their path — the “devourers,” and a slavering troll turned genteel companion via enchantment.

The story concerns a young blacksmith who gains ultimate power from a magic sword, and his goal to understand this new ability. The ultimate power is quite impressively demonstrated when Lanfeust single-handedly destroys an army of bandits, blowing them away amid billows of flame. The goal at this point lacks both urgency and conflict but presumably that will be addressed in the next volume.

Expository captions are deftly employed throughout, imparting facts and tidbits from an omniscient narrator. Very useful for quickly explaining the workings of a fantasy world. Narrative summary captions, however, are few and far between, leading to some awkward dialogue and tedious connecting scenes.

The art is charming and imaginative and key to bringing the story to life. Technically, the figures and faces could be better, but those faults are easily overlooked thanks to the style and vision.

Christophe Arleston och Didier Tarquins fantastiska (i dubbel bemärkelse) serie om världen Troy är mycket underhållande och fascinerande. Troy är en värld där alla föds med vad som närmast kan beskrivas som en superkraft eller magisk gåva. Huvudpersonen Lanfeust kan smälta metaller genom att titta på dem (och jobbar därav som smed), hans fästmö Ci'an är en helare och hennes provokativa syster Cixi kan förvandla vatten till is eller ånga. Men Lanfeust har också en större gåva, vilket systrarnas far, Mäster Nikoledes, upptäcker i samband med att Lanfeust kommer i kontakt med riddaren Or-Azurs svärd som är gjort av magohammotens elfenben: han kan plötsligt bemästra alla magiska gåvor.

Nikoledes vill föra Lanfeust till konservatoriet i Eckmül och tillsammans med dennes två döttrar ger sig den lilla gruppen (som växer under resans gång) ut på ett storslaget äventyr, som bara påbörjas i detta album.

För översättningen till svenska står Karl Ridderström, som här liksom i de två sista delarna av Det tredje testamentet (också från Albumförlaget) gör ett ypperligt jobb.

Rekommenderas varmt. För egen del väntar jag otåligt på att album nummer två skall ges ut.

Dans le monde de Troy, tout le monde a un pouvoir magique. Certains peuvent vaporiser l’eau, d’autres soigner les blessures ou bien encore faire des pets colorés. Certains pouvoirs sont plus utile que d’autres, évidemment! Lanfeust, qui possède le don de fondre le métal, découvre un jour par hasard que sa magie est beaucoup plus puissante qu’il ne le pensait. Avec le vieux sage Nicolède et ses deux filles Cixi et Cian (sa fiancée), il entreprend alors un périple pour se rendre à Eckmühl, la ville où étudient les sages, pour essayer d’en apprendre plus.

Premier tome d’une saga pleine d’aventures et d’humour! Le style balbutie encore un peu mais on décèle déjà tous les ingrédients qui font de Lanfeust de Troy le succès que l’on connaît. Et s’il vous venait l’envie de l’écouter sur Audible (quelle drôle d’idée, écouter une BD!), sachez que vous en avez pour une heure d’effets sonores, de musiques, de voix plus vraies que nature et de descriptions toutes plus colorées les unes que les autres.

2½-3 stars.

Not what I'd call a great comic, neither by the art nor the story.
The magic system is interesting, but the story itself is thin, the characters pretty flat, and you've got some blatant sexists stuff happening without anybody really being bothered by it.
Cixi is constantly sexually harassing Zanfyst, but C'ian and Zanfyst doesn't seem overly bothered by it. And why is C'ian even interested in dating Zanfyst if she considers him a child?
You've also apparently only got one troll with a huge territory, since Hebus terrorize from Glinn to Jaclare and those cities are nowhere near each other on the map.

So the idea for the magic system is interesting, but the comic is lacking on pretty much all other accounts.
I'll give it 4½ stars for the magic system, 2 3/4 for the art, 2½ for storyline and worldbuilding, and 1 for the characters in this first volume.

Currently available on Kindle Unlimited, this is the first episode of the first series in this publisher’s extensive shared universe. It’s a straightforward heroic fantasy with all your stock characters and basic heroic plot, but done with such verve, vigour, and good humour that I can definitely see myself reading this again and again, as well as seeking out the rest of this universe.

The writer clearly has great affection for the genre, using every trope with cleverness and a fresh approach, whilst the artist is evidently a student of Loisel, the creator of La Quete De L’Oiseau Du Temps, with the same anarchic visual humour baked into little details. This graphic novel falls squarely into the traditions of that great series. The magic system here is intriguing, bringing its own flavour to this world.

Typical hero’s journey set-up elevated by the stupendous artwork. Tarquin is especially good at breaking up conversations using wonderfully detailed wide panels showcasing the fantasy setting. The character list can easily be mapped onto the cast of Star Wars, with Lanfeust as the boring Luke stand-in, Nicolede as Obi-Wan and Leia split into the bickering sisters Cixi and C’ian. The Han Solo-esque Chevalier (whose enormous chin signifies his arrogance) makes a too-brief appearance but promises to provide the most fun in the series. Adolescent, silly teenage boy comics which has no right to be this lovingly realised.

The universe is some otherworldly medieval place with mages and magical creatures and where gods are powered by the number of their followers.

Oui ! Ca m’a fait vraiment plaisir d’acheter et de relire cette BD que j’avais lu au collège il y a plus de 10 ans! Mes gouts sont bien meilleurs maintenant et entre l’humour et l’aventure, Lanfeust de Trou reste un incontournable du genre.

Vrmt sympa, bcp mieux que les maîtres cartographes, j’aurais aimé pouvoir mettre 3,5 car 4 c’est bcp, parce que quand même un peu sexiste, des trucs un peu gros dans l’histoire, mais depuis le temps que je voulais le lire ca va je suis pas déçu

Un très bon débout d'aventure avec Lanfeust. C'est une BD pour les fans du fantastique avec un univers qui rassemble à celui des "Elfes". En résumé, j'adore !!
