The game is over for Yoshio. His villagers are gone, all dead as far as he can tell. But just as he is overcome with despair, one final gift arrives from the Village of Fate--a package containing the NPC Carol, and she's clearly a real, live girl. With Carol in tow, Yoshio leaves the safety of his home to travel to Hokkaido, where the developers are located. He will uncover the truth of this mysterious game once and for all!
This is it. The end of a trilogy that was mostly inspiring.
A good portion of this volume was hanging out with Carol in the ‘world of the gods.’ It was cute and fun, but when they meet up with certain characters the story takes a really weird swerve with its comedy. One aspect of Japanese comedy that I don’t think I’ll ever understand is when characters obsess over little girls to the point where the joke is they’re being creepy. That’s the PG version of it, but that certain ‘characteristic’ always feels weird and when it pops up in this volume it almost feels like a sledgehammer to the face because it doesn’t fit. I almost wouldn’t recommend this with how often they bring it up in such a short time frame, but this is the final volume and the last third definitely makes up for its icky comedy.
I still have a few questions overall, but I feel quite satisfied with the ending. Yoshio is a changed man and it was a pleasure to see him take life by the reigns.
I really loved the first two books and this one was fine but like.... Not nearly as good. The first half was disappointing and fell a bit into r/menwritingwomen which wasn't great. Also some jokes that just left a bad taste in my mouth. But the second half picked right back up and I liked the ending. I'd even read another one if there ever was one, I just hope they improve a bit from this.
Yoshio might have dealt with a fellow player, but he is now stuck with Carol and a lot of unanswered questions. Most of which are answered in this great conclusion to the series. Some great character development, a few tense moments and a solid ending. One of the earlier victories of the MC in volume 3 was reversed to an extent, which felt unnecessary and convoluted, but not to the point of impacting my enjoyment. The author expressed the wish to continue writing for the series, depending on how things go, and I hope to see more stories in this series (primarily set in Japan since that was the more fun section of the series). Still, the story is ended. Great series.
While not as engaging (in my personal opinion) as the last two entries into the series, this does round off the series in a satisfying way. In regards to pacing, I wish the author had the chance to split this into two books and elaborate more on some of the tense scenes, but nonetheless, still a good send-off for the series.
A great ending to this wonderful series. this series has completely changed and it is amazing, it starts with a fun story of a man who learns to live life with a video game but it gets so much better. didn't expect to give this series 5 stars, especially with this title, but here we are, and it deserves it.
A fun conclusion to the series, as the various plots and developments come to a head and Yoshio gets even more deeply involved in the strange goings-on. The series was fairly predictable in its developments throughout, but it was still an enjoyable journey.
