It doesn't matter the form love takes, when a shifter finds his mate there's nothing that can stand in his way.
This series explores love in all its various shapes and the people who can change their shape at will.
Pack, pride and sloth will protect what is theirs and if some of their members need a little push to find true love, well there's nothing wrong with a little direct intervention, especially when killers are on the loose.
Overcoming His Pride by Amber Kell
Book Eight in the Supernatural Mates series
Andrew never expected love to come to him.
Andrew Everett has had horrible luck in love. His wife left him with a baby then years later his second relationship ended with his girlfriend turning into a psychopath. Imagine his surprise when two wren shifters decide to keep him.
Marlen and Chen have been together for years. Kicked out of their flock because of their love for one another, they’ve drifted from place to place looking for a home. One sight of Andrew and the pair knows who they want to complete their nest. But convincing Andrew of that proves more difficult than anticipated.
When a woman from Andrew’s past comes back, they have to pull together to protect all that Andrew holds dear. Will the three of them be able to find their happy ending, or will Andrew remain unwilling to be their nest mate?
Amber Kell About the Amber Kell has made a career out of daydreaming. It has been a lifelong habit she practices diligently as shown by her complete lack of focus on anything not related to her fantasy world building.
When she told her husband what she wanted to do with her life he told her to go have fun.
During those seconds she isn't writing she remembers she has children who humor her with games of 'what if' and let her drag them to foreign lands to gather inspiration. Her youngest confided in her that he wants to write because he longs for a website and an author name—two things apparently necessary to be a proper writer.
Despite her husband's insistence she doesn't drink enough to be a true literary genius she continues to spin stories of people falling happily in love and staying that way.
She is thwarted during the day by a traffic jam of cats on the stairway and a puppy who insists on walks, but she bravely perseveres.

Seeing as it's been a while since the previous book, I definitely was not a fan of the cliffhanger type ending concerning the wrens' last wish.
Granted this isn't a long book and I've gotten away from MMM books since the several moving parts are seldom done justice. I can't honestly say this made much impact on my opinion. So start with getting an older human male to accept two young shifters together. And for the heck of it lets throw in some ex-wife drama depicting her as a heartless cold user bitch with ulterior motives about seeing her son. Oh and while we are at it, lets just turn around and trash that at the end and redeem her and show another side... Hmm, one word comes to mind. FALSE.
I'm am totally prepared to be alone in my opinion that the character relationship element was underdeveloped and the mother drama felt more like story fluff all leading up to the happy ever after ending and redeem all those closed to the MCs. And on a slightly different note, the title really didn't do anything for the story except grab my attention to the book. I didn't feel like pride was even that big of a thing. Pride isn't really what kept Andrew from bond completion. More like he believes he's not good enough for them as an older man.
Notes: First Chapter read June 11; Picked back up late June 14
An older human being virtually stalked by two much younger shifters, I liked this one. Andrew has a lot of making up to do with everyone in the small shifter town after his poor judgement when it came to looking after his son. For the most part people are forgiving as they realise he only did what he thought was for the best.
Marlen and Chen are Wren shifters and I thought the way the author wrote about them was perfect. Even in human form they seemed to flutter around the older man reminding me constantly that they were birds.
Andrew is not totally on board with them being his mates. He worries about the age difference, his past traumas when it comes to relationships and the fact that he has never been with a man before. The birds are determined not to give up though, safe in the knowledge that Andrew is the one that will complete their nest.
Just as Andrew decides to give it a go his past turns up in town hell bent on causing trouble. Things take a turn for the worse when his family is targeted but his little wrens are there to help him through.
Good end to the series where we see Andrew get his HEA. He always felt bad about what happened with James, no matter that he was trying to help. I liked seeing them grow a bit closer. If was fun watching Chen & Marlen and how they wore him down. They were his shadows and they were hilarious when they thought he was in danger.
I do feel like this was mostly a carbon copy of the others. Still sweet, and fun. I'll be keeping an eye on the others from this series just to fill in the gaps, but overall 'i liked it' is a fit description.
Amber Kell has this great habit of making me hate characters then love them when they finally get their own stories told. One of the most hated I guess, for the Supernatural Mates series, is Andrew Everett, the father of James Everett from A Prideless Man (Supernatural Mates #3). Hehad suffered all his life with debilitating pain because of the suppressants Andrew had been giving him. Also, Andrew is that same doctor who had been experimenting with lots of chemicals that eventually harmed all shifters. Who could not help but hate this guy?
After 5 more installments, finally we find out the story that is Andrew and instead of hating him all the more, Ms. Kell has made me say, 'awww poor guy!' and promptly forgave him all of his trespasses. Hurray me, a sucker!
So Marlen and Chen, the wren shifters extraordinaire for their spying skills, have recognized said Andrew as their mate. It took some time for Andrew to accept them: first he never considered himself gay or even bi, and second, he was getting on in years and these two hunky hunk men were like the age of his son, James. Cradle snatching anyone? Then again, their whole relationship was a done deal for these two young men and instead of saying ewwww? I said: ooooh Erotic Older Hero!
There is not much drama that goes on here, until an ex-factor of a woman turns up and attempts to change all things for her benefit. There was a bit of yay high drama on James' part but Andrew showed his maturity through it all and came out the stellar patient man who could just be as forgiving as the rest. Or unforgiving. Whichever way, his is a character I grew to appreciate and finally love.
For all those who follow the series, Overcoming His Pride is a nice little installment that settles the stories that are James and Andrew Everett.
This was my first menage-story. Till now, I've always avoided them because I'm not a big fan of sharing in a relationship. Maybe that's not rational because there are very cute relationships between three persons who love each other very much. But...well. It's just me :)
I tried this one because the concept of three persons mated through fate intrigued me very much. I didn't regret it. Andrew was cute :) The way he fought against the attraction was fun. And the annoyingly persistant wrens? They were adorable.
I liked this installment, where an established couple includes a third person in their relationship, much more than Book 6 of this series. Don't get me wrong, it was okay, but not as good as Book 8. (I read them in the wrong order) The feelings between the three MCs were deeper and much more comprehensible.
When Andrew finally accepts that he's the wren's missing mate, they hit the sheets, of course. I liked the sex-scenes. The three men are very caring and gentle with each other. And fiercly protective.
I like how the story addresses Andrew’s insecurities about his aged and imperfect body. It’s sweet and adds that much-needed sense of being real. The majority of shifter stories seem to assume that perfection is automatically sexy and that’s simply not true.
The dynamics between the three of them are also very cute. I’m not usually a big fan of threesomes, but for me these guys really work in combination with each other, each bringing a different quality into the mix. I don’t even mind that we don’t get Marlen’s POV until the very end. Somehow, despite the story being brief and the viewpoints mostly limited, the characterization comes through fine.
And it ends on a note of genuine amusement, too. Lovely!
I have to say out of all the supernatural mates this story really tugged at my heart! At first in the series you don't know what to make of Andrew. But as you read through all the books that lead up to this one, you realize that Andrew loved his son a lot. He would done anything for him. Then marlen and Chen come into the picture. I love the way the wrens treat Andrew. I just love all three together. I always wish the books are longer. This books was more about outside forces then there relationship. But I still loved the book a lot.
Not Fair! That darn last line... grrr LOL! It was good to see some issues resolved for Andrew even though the whole "rescue" scene played out a lot quicker and less violently than I thought it would! Andrew could be the poster child for "Good people do bad things for what they think is a good reason!" But he fights to right the wrongs and finds his two mates along the way! I fear that we are saying ado to the gang... but Ms. Kell could surprise us some day!
sosososo cute: “Why don’t you just build one house?” Chen and Marlen sat up and glared at their mate. “We would never do that,” Chen snarled. “It would show disrespect to only give you one choice.” Marlen nodded his agreement. “Oh. I was just thinking about the cost.” Marlen laughed. “Wrens save their entire lives for this.” “Like a nest egg?” Andrew asked. “Exactly!”
I liked it but it felt like so much of this very short story was spent on characters other than the three mates. We just didn't get much time with them together and most of the what we did get was sex. I was really hoping for more. *sad*
I really liked the fact that Andrew wasn't your typical shifters' mate--you know, either hot twink or hunky muscle man. He's in his 50s, not in the best of shape, and has enough emotional baggage to fill several sets of luggage. I love that he got his HEA after all.
This series just gets better as it matures. It would be easy to hate Andrew, but love was always his motivation, if misguided. This becomes obvious in this book. I look forward to more.
