I HUSET MELLOM NATT OG DAG blir du tatt med til en dyster fremtid. Jorda er delt opp i mindre enklaver der kun de rikeste og mektigste kan bo, mens storparten av befolkningen må overleve i favelaer, brakkebyer og falleferdige, urbane bykjerner.

Marko Eldfell, en norsk desertør på flukt, lever i skjul i Tiranas livsfarlige gater der han livnærer seg av strøjobber for lokale kriminelle. Etter en konflikt med en lokal mafioso finner millitæret ut av hvor han befinner seg, og han har ikke lenger noe sted å flykte. Idet alt håp synes ute, tilbyr en eksentrisk forretningsmann seg å hjelpe, men det er en hake. For å vinne tilbake sin frihet må han spore opp sin tidligere troppssjef og gode venn, Jack Stenthon. Probelemet er bare at Marko så Stenthon dø på slagmarken i Tblisi.

Norwegian action/sci-fi, with a strong focus on 'action', that leans towards the genre of agent novels.

When Ørjan N. Karlsson wrote Huset mellom natt og dag, The House Inbetween Night and Day, he broke new ground for himself. His bibliography covers more than a decade during which he has produced quite a few novels, but with this book he ventures away from the tangible comfort of our own world and into a dystopian future, which is quite a different challenge due to the increased demands on the creation of a believable setting. I think he did so with above adequate success: If one takes into consideration the intended limitations of the novel, then I believe the finished product lives up to the idea that birthed it.

The title gave me an impression that this would be a deeper and more poetic tale than it turned out to be. Instead, I came to realize that it would have made a pretty nice title for a James Bond film, and that is much closer to home. Marko Eldfell is an agent and action hero, although more unwilling and flawed than his MI6 counterpart. Rather than the wordy prose or technical/fantastical language which often grace sci-fi novels - which I was expecting - we are here presented the tale in simple terms, where everything epic or awe-inspiring have been displaced by by grit and intense action. Actually, it could be argued that this is only a sci-fi in the sense that it contains fictive science, despite containing a plethora of futuristic gadgetry the storyline itself rarely touches upon the technical aspects, the focus is always first and foremost on the fighting, falling, shooting, and massive explosions that thoroughly dominate the novel. Imagine a Jason Bourne put a hundred years into a dystopian future and the picture should come pretty close to this.

But perhaps a more proper introduction is in order. Marko Eldfell (eld- is pronounced like held without the 'h') is a former soldier that belonged to one of NATO's many shady military projects, more precisely he was one of the two-hundred who were enchanted with bioapp implants as part of a program to turn elite soldiers into a superhuman force - which didn't yield the intended result, but the secrecy still had to be maintained and so Eldfell, along with the other test-subjects, were forced into a permanent enlistment with NATO. As the story begins Eldfell has already been on the run for five years, which makes him the most successful escapee from the program while granting a most-wanted status amongst the secret military faction known as the Masks. Now he's working for an Albanian mobster called Caliban, it keeps him hidden from Masked eyes. But Caliban is a treacherous man and the risk of falling from his graces is high, which always results in blood and violence. To complicate matters further there are other factions out there who wish Eldfell to do their bidding, neither of whom seems to pay any heed to his welfare. It seems to be Eldfell's fate to be chased constantly, if not by one faction then by another, as he searches to unravel the truths behind layers of lies.

This is the first novel in a series. I know many have questioned this, but the hardback contains a teaser in the form of the first chapter from the next book and so I can verify that there will be at least one more book. Will any of them be translated to English? I think The House Inbetween Night and Day might be a good candidate for that. I've read only around ten mass produced action thrillers written in English and this easily surpasses most of those. Thus I will conclude that it's probably a better choice to translate this rather than make new but inferior stories. Sure, it does have a few flaws, but there are still fewer here than in many others.

I picked this up simply because it was scifi, not really thinking anything of the plot. And I’m glad I did. It does feel more like an action book than your «typical» scifi, which I think makes it easily digestible to a norwegian audience. But it contains some clever scifi elements that I have not seen much of previously and that works well to bring the story along. The book also has some fantastic scenery that truly made me feel like slipping into a different time and place.

I would definitely recommend this to someone who likes mystery and crime/nordic noir. It left me with many questions and I will be picking up the rest of the series to have them answered.

Kersantti Marko Eldfelt on biomodifioitu sotilas joka välttelee kiinnijoutumistaan olemalla jatkuvasti pakosalla. Häntä etsii entinen työnantaja eliittisotilasjoukkioineen. Marko ei halua muuta kuin muuttaa enklaaviin, paikkaan jossa ei ole köyhyyttä eikä saasteita. Pääosa ihmiskunnasta elää jatkuvassa yhteydessä sFääriin, tietoverkkoon jossa kaikki on mahdollista. Marko traumatisoitui armeija-aikoinaan niin että ei muuta toivo kuin rauhallista loppuelämää. Hän kerää rahaa muuttoa varten paikallisen mafioson leivissä mutta se tuntuu kestävän ikuisuuden. Eräänä päivänä keikka menee pieleen ja hän päätyy etsijöidensä näköpiiriin.
Alkoholisoitunut lääkäri Lenny on ainoa joka tietää Markon menneisyydestä, he olivat aiemmin taistelutovereita ja hän hoitaa Markoa kun vammoja tulee taisteluissa.
Taka-alalla häärii iso kiho, de Torquemada, Naamioiden pomo jonka lihassa Marko tykyttää ilkeänä piikkinä. De Torquemadaa ottaa pattiin että tyyppi on onnistunut välttelemään kiinnijäämistään useita vuosia mutta nyt Markosta on löytynyt uusi johtolanka ja de Torquemada odottaa vesi kielellä päästäkseen kiduttamaan Markon hengiltä. Aikamoinen vekkuli-ukko!
I'Ree on puolisotilaallisen palkka-armeijan leivissä. Hänen ja Markon tiet kohtaavat kun kumpikin on oman etsintäreissunsa takia samassa paikassa. Jotenkin asiat menevät taas solmuun ja tulee taisteluita, ihmisiä kuolee mutta päähenkilöt jatkavat pakoaan, kuinkas muuten kun tämä on vasta ensimmäinen osa trilogiasta. Tämä oli viihdyttävä rymistely, hieman scifiä sisältävä trilleri jonka muutkin osat tullee luettua.

Vauhtia ja vaarallisia tilanteita, välillä osa tarinasta jää ohuesti kerrotuksi. Hyvä kokonaisuus kuitenkin.

Jeg likte boken! Overraskende velskrevet, og ekstremt mye action! Nesten slik at man ikke får tid å fordøye eller puste 😅🤣 men gøy!

En spennende og fantasifull historie med masse deilig sci-fi-duppedingser og nerderier som hadde vært en fryd å lese hvis den hadde blitt fortalt med et godt språk. Dessverre er boka skrevet på en usedvanlig kjedelig, ekstremt monoton og repetitiv måte som gjorde det vanskelig å holde konsentrasjonen oppe. Det fascinerende er at det virker som om forfatteren prøvde å unngå å skrive repetitivt, så istedenfor å skrive f.eks. «han» når han omtaler en albansk person, prøvde han seg med f.eks. «albaneren». Og så, da han fant ut at det fungerte bra, var han fornøyd, og fortsatte å skrive «albaneren». «Albaneren», «albaneren» og atter «albaneren». Eller «kraftpluggen». For ikke å snakke om «den andre»! Hvor mange titalls ganger blir denne unaturlige konstruksjonen brukt? Dialogen er fryktelig unaturlig, full av friske og ungdommelige uttrykk som «vi får ile sakte», «så rant det Marco i hu», «jeg føler meg som en vinkork i et opprørt hav», osv. Legg så til en del skrivefeil, feil bruk av ord, sexistiske vendinger, merkelige bilder og uklare stedsbeskrivelser, så har du et kjapt sammendrag av boka. Men jeg skulle gjerne ha sett filmen!

En forbausende god norsk sci-fi! Det er nemlig lenge siden jeg egentlig gav opp håpet om å slå kloa i en skikkelig god norsk sci-fi historie for det er altfor mange internasjonale forfattere som har skrevet og skriver veldig bra innenfor sjangeren. Ørjan N. Karlsson har etter mitt syn klart mesterstykket! Boka er spennende, den fremtidsrettede teknologien troverdig beskrevet, her er interessante karakterer og en akkurat passe dose "hva-skjedde-egentlig-nå" cliffhangers til å drive historien framover. Boka er helt klart den første i en serie, og er derfor engentlig ikke avsluttende selv om den har en slutt. Dette er et spennende, nytt norsk og i mine øyne unikt sci-fi forfatterskap som har et stort potensiale. Jeg tror boka passer både for nye lesere innenfor sci-fi sjangeren (den er nemlig ikke for teknologisk kompleks) samtidig som det er elementer her som litt mer bevandrede innenfor sjangeren absolutt kan sette pris på. Jeg ser virkelig fram til bok 2!

Utrolig spennende lesing! Jeg gleder meg virkelig til neste bok allerede.
Det er så bra og se norsk science-fiction. Det hjelper at denne boka har action og spenning i bøttevis. Hovedpersonen er interessant og engasjerende. Mafiabosser, spesielle agenter og diverse småkriminelle. Her bugner det av fargerike personer og skildringer av en verden der alle er pålogget. Direkte i hodet.
Jeg anbefaler denne boka til, ikke bare de som liker science-ficton, men også de som setter pris på en god thriller.

Som det jeg vil kalle en "far-film" (populære action og/eller krigs-filmer, ofte med høyt budsjett og høy eksplosjons-faktor), i bokform. Men som et blikk på hvordan 2106 kan se ut, er den ikke så verst med tanke på at den forespeilende teknologien fremstår realistisk.

Mukaansa tempaava, uskottava dystopia. Erittäin viihteellisesti kirjoitettu kirja.

Henkilöhahmot tuntuvat sadunomaisen kaksiulotteisilta. Jokainen elää yhtä päärooliaan ja taustalla vaikuttaa myös perimmäinen kokemus. Tarinankerrontaa helpottaa melko mustavalkoinen maailma.

Tää oli aika ok. Tarina hukkasi vähän potentiaaliaan turboahdettuun toimintaan. Lähes kaikki hahmot on ohuita karikatyyrejä. Ideoilla ja viihdyttävällä rytmillä sai mut kuitenkin vakuuttumaan että pitänee seuraavatkin osat lukea.

Tulevaisuuden maailma, jossa moni asia on mennyt pieleen. Taisteluja, juonittelua, petosta ja juonikuvioiden alkuja, joita täytyy seurata seuraaviin osiin. Tämä kirja aloittaa trilogian ja sen vuoksi monta asiaa jää auki.

Not my cup of tea obviously. Packed with action and gory killings, and yet it could not hold my attention. Even though I've always been a huge James Bond and Sci-Fi fan.
