The original, highly acclaimed, silk-covered edition of Vintage Black Glamour. Packed with rarely seen photographs of Black actors, models, writers and entertainers of the early part of the 20th century, many of whom have been sorely neglected—until now—it was judged by Oprah.com to be one of their top ten books to buy & keep.
Alongside profiles and the photographs of world-renowned Black stars such as Josephine Baker, Dorothy Dandridge and Diana Ross are less-known but hugely important artists such as opera singer Margaret Tynes, Cotton Club star Margot Webb, pioneering model Ophelia De Vore, and many, many more. --us.rocket88books.com
A gorgeous coffee table book that is so much more than simply beautiful images. It is a history of black starlets and icons, their biographies and images of a time lost. Along with well-known stars like Josephine Baker and Lena Horne, you'll find images and stories of less publicized women such as opera singer Margaret Tynes (the author's aunt) and Ophelia De Vore.
The stories told in Vintage Black Glamour took me back to my childhood summers spent in Virginia with my grandmother, with me rummaging through her old copies of Jet and Ebony, wishing I were as glamourous as Diana Ross and Diahann Carroll. And these stories, rarely told in mainstream media, are what we need in a time when celebrity seems to only have one face.
A must-have book. I am so glad I found it. Thank you for compiling these images and sharing these stories with us, Nichelle.
I wanted this book but was hesitant to buy it, due to its price tag. I am so happy I did, as a lover of historical fashion and history this book gave me everything I wanted. Beautiful photos of different hues of brown skin women in amazing attire. The introduction gives us a look into the authors own life and psyche, while the remaining pages take the reader through a journey of african american starletts, models, singers, writers, businesswomen some well known, others rather obscure from the public, all strong and beautiful. Their full biographies arent always given, sometimes just their highest achievements are talked about and that is okay with me. This book is like looking through a family photo album that spans generations. Is this book worth it? Yes! I really hope the author issues a volume 2. (Hint, hint)
4.5 great behind the scenes stories and accompanying photographic gems. One criticism is that the text organization and photo layout could have been better. Only minimally detracts from the reading experience. So glad to have this in my book collection.
Such a beautiful book with amazing background on these gorgeous women. I often pick up just to read their stories or simply look at the beauty. It's amazing to have and I highly recommend this for your collection.
Gorgeous photos and lots of information about both household names and lesser-known black female stars of the last century. Two stars off because the book is riddled with typos.
