Newport Dreams by Shelley Noble is a 2014 Witness Impulse publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. Georgie has lived a shelterd life due to her parents wealth. She has everything she needs but she is being pressured to work in her family's business that is something she would like to avoid if possible. The trouble is she can't seem to stick to any other career. Now she has the chance to do some photography work for a some renovators. But, as usual she gets off on the wrong foot. One of the guys working on the house has taken a personal dislike to her and now Georgie isn't sure she is going to hang on to this job either. Bruce is livid when he discovers that Georgie is being paid a salary for her inexperienced work and it's obvious she comes from money. Bruce is having a lot of trouble making ends meet right now and for some reason Georgie causes him to feel deep resentment. He makes her life miserable at every turn. But, without realizing it at first, Bruce points out what was right in front of Georgie all along. She has a talent she has been taking for granted and once she has some confidence in her abilities there is no stopping Georgie from stepping out on her own and claiming her independence. So maybe this Bruce guy isn't so bad after all. This novella/ short story would fall into the chick lit or contemporary romance genre. It's a really quick read and shows promising character development for Georgie, and Bruce will discover that he misjudged this tenacious young lady. Bruce is not a character readers will feel a great deal of compassion for even though we can all understand the pressure he must have been under, it's still no excuse to bully someone. He does redeem himself by helping Georgie realize she does have a niche and could be very successful at it if she puts her mind to it. He also realizes that part of his resentment came from his attraction to Georgie and he didn't see where he could possilbly have a chance with her . Georgie was just a little too self deprecating at times ,to the point where I felt like she was putting herself down. Knowing she was screwing up one opportunity after another and knowing she needs take charge of her life and stop drifting or she will end up stuck in a job she hates for the rest of her life , and trying to find a way to accomplish that, not only to show her parents and Bruce that she has what it takes, but to boost her confidence in herself, shows that Georgie was reaching real maturity. Self confidence may have been Georgie's biggest problem and her wealth allowed her sit back and let others bail her out if she needed help. So, both Bruce and Georgie come a long way in a short time. I did enjoy this short story and since this is the first time I have read any of this author's work, I think i will check into the other Breakway series stories as well. Over all this one gets 4 stars.
Geordie Holt is the daughter of a wealthy family that has given her everything she ever wished for and more. She wants to find a way to be independent, stop taking an allowance and make something of herself. It is scary and hard until she is hired to photograph a restoration of a historic mansion in Newport, Rhode Island and gets to know the crew. They help her face her fear, especially Bruce and she starts to learn to make her own decision and face the reality of her actions in this short novella. It is a great story but the ending is a bit up in the air, although not a cliffhanger.
A great story line with some great characters. A story of new friendships and of finding out what one wants from life. I loved the descriptions from the house they are renovating to the ocean to the people. The love story is good and I just loved it all. A great short read and one author I will have to read more from.
This is another part of the Breakwater Bay series. The series leaves you wanting more. It has been a while since these books came out so, I am assuming there will not be any more additions to the series. So sad. They were a fun read.
Shelley Noble’sNEWPORT DREAMS takes readers to the coastal area of Rhode Island to Newport’s forgotten Gilded Age Mansions, as a novella to for BREAKWATER BAY. (I recommend both books).
NEWPORT DREAMS features Geordie (a photographer) who comes to work on a restoration project called The Gilbert House. There she meets Bruce the architect (who has an attitude), Doug (who heads up the project), and two girls who work as preservationist and fund-raiser Carlyn and Meri, featured in Breakwater Bay.
Geordie is not like the others at The Gilbert House project, who all work hard and have to pay their own way. Geordie is from a wealthy family, has graduated from the best colleges, traveled the world, drives a nice car, and lives in a corporate apartment and bills are paid by her family.
However, she is not happy. She does not want to be controlled by her family. She is a talented photographer. All she wants to do is do what she loves best. However, she cannot make enough money on her own without her parent’s help. She takes this job as a photographer to document the renovation progress for The Gilbert House. She makes friends with the two girls and Doug; however, Bruce has an attitude, and makes it known with his coldness and rudeness towards her.
Bruce thinks Geordie is attractive; however, resents her money since he gave up his corporate job to go out on his own, and is struggling. Georgie also has fears of her own, her fear of heights and the fear of trying to make it on her own without her family’s help.
These two are actually great for one another and enjoyed these two characters as much, or more than I did those in Breakwater Bay. NEWPORT DREAMS is an engaging read about self-discovery, romance, and starting over and includes an excerpt for the upcoming BREAKWATER BAY. A big fan of Shelly Noble, would highly recommend reading all her books!
I enjoy stories of Newport, a seaside city on Aquidneck Island in Newport County, Rhode Island, located about 20 miles south of Providence, and about 60 miles south of Boston. Known as a New England summer resort and for the famous Newport Mansions. A major 18th-century port city, Newport now contains among the highest number of surviving colonial buildings of any city in the United States—an ideal setting for an engaging summer read.
Newport Dreams is a women’s fiction novella starting off the new Breakwater Bay series by Shelley Noble. Here we get an introduction the the characters that will be featured in the full length novels to follow. And what an off-beat but wonderful assortment of characters they were.
The main focus this time was on rich girl & budding photographer Geordie Holt, and architect Bruce Stafford. The tension between them, both at work and personally, built throughout the story which kept things interesting.
This was a great short story, hopefully generating interest in the series of Breakwater bay. The characters are well developed and we see such growth in both Bruce and Geordie. Geordie joins a team renovating an old house by photographing their work. This was a whim for her but led to an idea for making a living. I like shorter books and this one was a good length and held my interest. I'm going to look for more of Shelley Noble's books.
this author was recommended by Amazon as I am an Elin Hildebrand fan..love any beach/Nantucket read but with a good storyline. This was a short novel..but gave me a taste of her characters. Good summer read...not predictable...looking forward to Breakwater Bay full novel.
This novella is a prequel to this author's latest book. Another novella with an actual story, that makes three in a row. Enjoyed it and am looking forward to the novel.
