Miss Primrose needs to be punished. A member of the wickedly wanton Inn of the Red Chrysanthemum, where the most taboo and illicit pleasures are indulged, Miss Primrose—or Mistress Primrose, as she prefers—left Nicholas Edelton a shell of a man. Now his older brother, Spencer Edelton, the Marquess of Carey, intends to provide her a set-down she will never forget. ~~ Weary from exacting her revenge upon the man who raped her sister, Beatrice Primrose has had her fill of men of privilege and presumption, but she accepts a fateful invitation from a handsome nobleman to spend a sennight at his estate for a grand sum of money. She soon learns, however, that she will not get to reprise her role as Mistress. To her horror, she finds his lordship expects her to submit to him! But Beatrice won’t give in so easily. ~~ In a clash of wills, fueled by vengeance and lust, Lord Carey and Miss Primrose wrestle for dominance in, and out of, the bedchamber. Their biggest struggle, however, may be against their own desires… Can Miss Primrose take what she dishes? And will Lord Carey succumb or succeed in punishing Miss Primrose? READER This is an erotic historical romance with BDSM elements.
After accidentally flashing the audience with her knickers, Em Brown decided that writing was a safer activity. She enjoys writing romance, particularly erotic historicals. For more about her works, visit www.EroticHistoricals.com.
In a BDSM historical romance, the storyline needs to make sense for me to read it. The more I read through the parts, the less I enjoyed it. Some parts didn't make sense while others seemed rushed and off-putting. Disappointing but if you don't care about awkward scenes, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Just wasn't for me.
Misunderstandings and assumptions plus scorching desires
This is an erotic historical romance with a great story! Lord Carey is out to make Miss Primrose pay for destroying his "innocent" brother, but his assumptions don't match the woman. Now he's confused. He enjoys spending time with her in and out of the bedroom, and even worse, he is beginning to like her.
This series isn't just red hot erotica (and it is red hot), it has some great conversations and emotional exchanges between Lord Carey and Miss Primrose. I love these two characters together, especially when they argue or debate issues. Miss Primrose turns Lord Carey's expectations and his world upside down, but he gets his shots in as well.
The whole serial ends up the size of a regular book.
First of all I want to thank the author for sending me a copy of the book!
I have to be honest, this is the first book I have read in this genre and I wans't expecting much of it. But, eventhough I really didn't excpect it, I really enjoyed this book! The story is very cleaver and leaves you wanting more!
What bothered me a little was that the book consists of stories, so every time you start a new chapter, the eventes of the chapters before where explained again and again.
First, this was free. The goal was probably to entice the reader to buy more of the books, but as they were repetitive, meandering, and full of odd word choices, that's not an option I'll be taking. The books read like a high schooler using the thesaurus feature in Microsoft Word for the first time.
First, this wasn't a book, just a few chapters. This was not at all made clear. Within the first few pages the author or copy editor (if there was one) substituted one word (incorrectly) for another. The foreshadowing is so dark they're probably going to have to burn the place down just to see while getting up to their various erotic shenanigans. In a kinder vein, not so badly done as all that; the romance is clear, and the BDSM is more threat than damage (as least as much as one sees in this excerpt). The ultimate reveal will allow our protagonists endless love or endless agony. And for the last. Sorry, Em Brown. This was advertised to me as a book for $.99 I'm not paying for the rest of it That's my final comment.
This was a fun book. I was just a little disappointed that as soon as it got to the point in the book you have been waiting for it ends and you have to buy another book. But I suppose that is how it goes.
I would recommend this book to friends who like the naughty erotic side of stories on the historical romance front. :)
This is my first historical bdsm romance. It has an exciting story that has caught my attention. The reasons Miss Primrose becomes Mistress Primrose is not what you would expect. The lengths she will go to for her sister and her son are definitely extreme. I am unsure of the historical accuracy but the story is enjoyable and seems to be reasonable for that time. 3.5 stars.
Punishing Miss Primrose has the makings for a great story, but it fell flat for me. There were too many repetitive passages. The ending was too abrupt. I assume it was meant to draw you to the next book. It didn't work.
I have to say, I have never watched any porn, so to compare this book to porn, I cannot say (and I read this book probably 2 years ago now). But this book is not much different from other books or movies that use sex as a language for the protagonists. Or for that matter, any romance novels that have the characters “rutting” all the time, how do you say one is smut and one isn't? The story here involves a lot of sex and in some cases, explicit sex that compels the characters forward in their emotional and physical development, as well as their conscientious awareness that is their story. Yes, the novella style can be a little off-putting, but the main story at heart is why your are reading fiction. These two flawed characters have every reason to seek revenge in the name of those they love. You get to feel (well Beatrice more so than Spencer in my opinion), why they feel so compelled to try and use sex as a punishment to seek revenge and how they can come to confuse the lines between revenge, redemption, esteem and love. The story that does not involve sex is so compelling - they grow to truly like each other! And Beatrice is such a young woman who grows beautifully over the course of the story into a formidable woman. You have to give her story a shot. Over the course of the story, the sex is the point of drawing them together, but that is not what attracts them. Romance novels sometimes are caught up in the fantasy of people who are so perfect the main characters cannot resist each others perfection. This is not the case here. These people are scared, flawed and filled with angst, however, though their sexual encounters with each other allow them the ability to know each other. Surprisingly, to Spencer, Beatrice is quite clever; he admires that in her. Their story is one that allows for a natural esteem to be cultivated and grow organically, albeit in the unusual way. There is one pretty horrific encounter that profoundly effects both of them. However, it is crucial to their story and how they clearly see each other and coming to terms with feelings that play an integral role towards the end, when they finally give in to their feelings and understand that strong feelings can sometimes lead you astray. Beatrice, for me, was a strong-willed woman of young years who had a vision of revenge that she was determined to exact. By seeking her revenge, she thought that would bring her peace. Upon meeting Spencer, who was unaware of his brother’s deeds, she initiates her plan for revenge/redemption/forgiveness/peace. Spencer too has a goal in mind, but very different as he is not privy to the torrid details of what lead Miss Primrose to seek revenge upon his brother. The problem, how can you admire one you are determined to hate? How can you esteem someone who can make you feel lightheaded and at ease while making you forget the reason you sought them out in the beginning? As they spend more time with each other, their esteem for each other grows naturally (thanks to the sex of the book, which breaks down their inhibitions as they have had sex, now they are eager to know each other). I don’t want to give too much away, but give it a try. The characters are lovely and they are flawed, lonely and seeking what all humans want companionship, redemption, freedom and most importantly love.
Mistress Primrose has reduced two customers to mere shells of themselves. Nicholas Edelton and his cousin William are so enamoured of her they have already borrowed beyond their means. Elder brother Spencer, now the Marquess of Carey ships them off to Europe and books the woman for a week. He wants revenge. Oddly, so does she. The two men raped her sister, leaving her pregnant and now dead. The child is Primrose’s ward. The men are her only customers until his lordship names her price; two hundred pounds. *** Being five parts of a serial shoved together it’s very very repetitive. It also needed a better edit. It’s hoard not horde, and sight not site… and so on. Lots of those kind of mistakes that a spellchecker misses. It’s also really inconsistent. Does she work at the Red Chrysanthemum or merely rent rooms? The attempt to write olde worldy (wordy? lol) was misguided at times. And I find it hard to beleive she would head off for a week with a guy she doesn’t even know the name of; not without back-up. The sex was …fine. And it is implied that she is a woman of colour. Yay. But I’m not invested in them enough to buy the next… omg there are TWENTY parts? Talk about flogging a dead horse… bidoomtish 3 stars
This came in as a Bookbub freebie, and as far as it went, seemed pretty good for the genre. What I found irritating was the format - divided into "Parts" which were either relatively repetitive or apparently a fancy way to say "chapter", the story advanced in fits and starts, and then that was that. So it was a bit like getting five chapters of a story. Perhaps beggars can't be choosers, and yes, it was a freebie, but then perhaps it needs to be identified as an excerpt of a story. I read a great many books which are parts of series, and generally each book ends with an ending, as opposed to here.
I have to say, I like reading historical romance, but I had to force myself to finish this book. Part of the time words didn't have true meanings and others were so big I didn't understand them. I spent a lot of time looking words up in the dictionary. when I read a book I want to read it not spend time looking every other word up. The plot was good though and the story not bad.
Not enough of a story line to hold my interest. There is only an overview given through what looks as if it was originally 5 separate continuing stories. Overkill on the punishing each other sex scenes. I actually started skipping through them to look for more of the actual story.
Pass on this one unless your someone that just enjoys reading rougher type sex scenes.
Lord Spencer, a handsome specimen of a man and the beautiful Miss. Beatrice Primrose!! I enjoyed this story very much. It has a great storyline and spicy sizzling love scenes. A must read for Historical Romance lovers!
Lord Spencer Edelton. Third Marquess of Carey is out for revenge. His younger brother, Nicholas, and Cousin William have been mentally and physically abused by a courtesan, working at one of London’s most exclusive bordellos, the Inn of the Red Chrysanthemum. Anonymously he contracts her services for a sennight at his country estate, Bridewell. Twenty-three-year-old Miss Beatrice Primrose is neither a courtesan nor a strumpet. She is of gentle, though humble, birth. She contacted Madam Devereux, proprietor of the Red Chrysanthemum, for the sole purpose of making the acquaintance of Nicholas and William Edelton. These two “gentlemen” brutally raped her sister Charlotte. She too was out for revenge.
Each part is an open-ended tale of revenge. Lust and domination play major roles in the plot. Beatrice knows that she has the looks and charm to vex and allure men with the mere promise of coitus. As planned, Nicholas and William fall neatly into her trap. They pay dearly for her attentions. In the process she mentally breaks Nicholas, leaving only a shell of his former self. Lord Spencer knows that money can buy almost anything. He has plenty of money and intends to buy Miss Primrose’s services and then dealing her an unhealthy dose of her own medicine. The story concept is good, as are the character developments. However, the author’s ability to turn a phrase out-shines everything. Her prose read as poetry, literally seducing the reader with her words. Conversely, there is another side to be revealed and criticized. Each book leaves the reader breathlessly at a precipice. Like the movie serials, popular in the 30’s and 40’s, the reader has to buy the next book to satisfy their curiosity. This form of literature has always struck me as cheap and underhanded. Instead of giving the reader a finished novel, they are forced to continually buy more. As I’ve previously stated, Em Brown has a real writing talent. She could become a truly great writer if she would tone down the erotic antics and spend more time and effort in just writing a moving and complete story. Lastly, much time, effort, and space have been used in recapping previous parts. This would be unnecessary if all of Punishing Miss Primrose parts were condensed into one complete unit.
I was thoroughly surprised by this book, in a good way. This wasn't just a story where the plot was fluff and there was more sex than substance. The plot was intriguing...Miss Primrose has taken on work in a place where men's particular pleasures are met by women they pay for. In Miss Primrose's case, she is the 'mistress' to subservient males that want to be dominated. She only takes the job on in order to get revenge on two men who raped her sister and left her with a child, a child whose birthing killed her. One of those men was Nicholas Edelton. She does get her revenge which leaves him a devastated man.
Enter Spencer Edelton, the Marquess of Carey, and Nicholas' brother. He doesn't know what his brother has done, he just knows that Miss Primrose has humiliated him and broken him. He offers £200 for her to spend a week with him, a week in which he intends to turn the tables on her. He will be the master and she will be the submissive, and he will break her just like she broke his brother. Of course, he doesn't let on who he is, and not knowing what he has in mind, Miss Primrose accepts the offer. The money will come in useful for helping her and her aunt raise her sister's son.
What follows is some very sexy scenes, nothing distressing when it comes to the BDSM, both parties may have seemed to protest occasionally but they equally ended up thoroughly enjoying the outcome. For me, the sex really took second place to the story, because I couldn't wait to see what their reactions would be when they found out the truth about each other. I especially wanted to see Spencer's guilt at his 'punishing' Miss Primrose when she had the perfect reason to do what she did to his brother. ALAS, this was only the first instalment of what is quite a long series of books. So I don't get to find out. Who knows which book in the series will finally have the truth come out? I certainly can't afford to buy every book in order to find out. So I shall be left guessing. Even though I am left in limbo I have to admit that I don't regret reading this first book at all. It is really one of the better erotic stories I have read.
Started my new year with a bang from this one. The reason I gave this only a 4-star rating is because of its cliffhanger.
I’d like very much to see where this tale leads and how the characters would react should the truths be uncovered.
I got more than I bargained for as this isn’t an insta-love insta-lust story. Yes, lust is a given and love has nothing to do with it but both Beatrice and the Marquess have their agendas.
The BDSM factor was satisfying and I like their power play and power struggle. Mistress Primrose entered into a different arrangement than what she’s used to and the Marquess didn’t know how to deal with her.
This is a quickie and I’m definitely going reading the next parts.
The story was not very long and the readers only got part of the whole story. If I want to read more, I'll have to buy another book. I really dislike it when authors (or whoever decides how the book is to be released) end on a cliffhanger. And if the story isn't a five star book, then I'll seldom buy any of the other books in the series. There wasn't anything new in this book. It was pretty well written, but it was also pretty formulaic. No surprises or twists and turns. The sex scenes were pretty well done. The author kept repeating the reason for why Spencer was punishing Miss Primrose. This was overdone.
I was curious what this book might be and the answer is horribly awkward and painful to finish (I only gave it a 2 because I was tempted to finish and give it the benefit of getting better instead of stopping half way). It's as if the author wanted to write a Fifty Shades-esque book and a historical fiction, so combined them and didn't do a great job. It's questionable plot isn't a horrible concept, but it drags on in an attempt to be a serial style read. It also has some of the most painfully awkward sex scenes I have ever read. Wish I hadn't wasted my time reading it - the only positive was it was a free download.
This historical one is full of revenge entrige . It gets the listener to really get into the story. The listener gets to imagine how life was in the early 1800. How women had to watch every step they take . Come listen when a lord gets the wrong idea of a certain lady . The lord thinks the lady misled his brother sooo in order to teach her a lesson the lord leads her on a journey of pleasure of the flesh. What happens when the lord leans the truth
The narrator was perfect she really knows how to act the part of the regency period
While not a fan of dominant/submissive, at first it wasn't too bad, then I decided to just flip through the pages to find out how the two discovered each other's secrets and went on to find their HEA, or at least I thought they would. But NO. The book just stopped. NO ENDING. In this book, neither discovers the other's secret, it just stops with Miss Primrose, the usual dominatrix, being dominated, but ??? I hate books that leave me hanging. This is the first 1 star rating I've ever given.
So in all actuality, I'm prepared to throttle Spencer. The fact that he has the nerve to be upset with and want to punish Beatrice because his brother and cousins were idiots enrages me. Also, that he has the nerve to be upset that Beatrice would turn his brother down . . . Clearly she doesn't give a shit about his station. Spencer is just as daft as his brother. Regardless, I will continue the series. I want to see how long it will take Spencer to realize how much of a privileged fool he has been and how much of privileged idiots Nicholas and William were.
I absolutely enjoyed listening to this box set read by the author Em Brown. This is my first time listening to this author work and I really liked it. you will not be disappointed with the steamy, from being to end, flames your desire indeed.
I will be recommending this box set for the use of a credit it's well worth it.
thanks for letting us into your world Em Brown excellent quality of service, my only concern is in chapter 17 there seems to some technical issues with her recording. neither the less. outstanding balance. left me wondering what happens next.
I applaud the actions of Mistress Primrose. It would appear that Nicholas and William should be punished if they were the cause of Charlott 's death. The fact that she became the focus of Spencer's desire to see her regret her punishment of his brother and cousin. I can not wait to find out how this will end. Miss Primrose is the perfect match for Spencer. The chemistry is sizzling. The ending should be phenomenal.
The story line was good but left out too much information. He cares for his brother enough to seek revenge but doesn't know his brother and cousin could commit rape. Would someone seek revenge and not be prepared as he seems to be. The biggest sin is too set up a story, then leave many questions and stop in the middle. Especially frustrating when part 1 is so short. I would not recommend because of this dangling.
My second fantastic book by Em Brown. Not my last. I found myself laughing at Miss/Mistress Primrose and 'My Lord'. The 'fighting' between the two of them can't go anywhere except to the bedroom (and the library and the gardens and...).
If you are looking for good BDSM books with detail, likable characters and a great plot, these are the books for you!
