Forever Under a Rainbow

“I’m not straight” is how Bridger Jenkins came out. That’s all he’s comfortable claiming at first, even if he’s more than willing to experiment sexually with men to find out what being not straight means in practice. Several horrid dates leave him feeling frustrated, so he retreats to a familiar online gay forum for support. There, he runs across Stone Moore, whose profile says he’s only interested in friendship. After hours of easy conversation, Stone agrees to go on a date.

During their amazing evening together, Bridger shares that he’s new to dating men. This seems to throw Stone off, yet the date ends with a steamy kiss. When Stone later tells Bridger the time isn’t right for them, Bridger is hurt and confused. He realizes he must’ve come off as bi-curious, naïve, and insecure. Bridger knows he needs to feel comfortable in this new skin of his and that he won’t find love until he’s more at ease.

Bridger isn’t thrilled to remain in Stone’s friend zone but contents himself with their late night chats and goes out with other men, which both strengthens and disheartens him. His dissatisfying dates reinforce what he already knows: he won’t find anyone else as amazing as Stone. Eventually, he’s bold enough to ask Stone out on another date. Will they date again? Have they found their soul mates, or will they each discover something about the other that causes them to go their separate ways?

Photo Description:
Two men walk hand in hand along a trail. It’s obvious one man knows the way through the field of native grasses, and the man who is a half step behind trusts his partner but might be apprehensive about the situation or where he’s being led. They appear to be talking in intimate tones. They touch from fingers to forearms as they head toward the horizon.

My Review: Charming and winsome. Very sweet couple, very nice tale of coming to terms with reality and not letting Fantasy Perfection dominate your actual life. Make love don't fake love, as my first boyfriend said to me. It's something we create, love, and it's a darn good idea to get the party of the second part involved and interested in the love you're making before there's a party of three, four, or more that's crowding around.

I'm a bitter old bastard and I don't believe in Happily Ever After, but I'll damn sure run with it in fiction! This scratched my itchy HEA spot for the day. Need yours done? Read this charming little bagatelle.

This is a very sweet story about two men who meet online, become friends, and eventually fall in love. I liked the take on online dating and the cute ending, but I wish there had been less telling and more showing.

Also, Stone was not a very likable MC. I felt like Bridger did all the work and giving in that relationship.

Bonus for creative use of toys! Just the visual of the dildos with the suction cups made my mouth dry.

~2.5~

The story in theory is about avoiding labels, relationships being about more than sex and making compromises to give love a chance. All good and worth morals.

Unfortunately it doesn't work for me. Stone is too distant a love interest, spending most of the book playing avoidance games and not talking, even at the point of their moving in together. The writing style is tell rather than show so there is nothing to suggest he's worth the effort, he has less personality than his name-sake.

Bridger despite not even being able to say he's gay does all the chasing, pining, worrying. And all the compromising. When he's not being all insecure over what a pretty, pretty ken doll he is!

Then there's Gina, Bridger's best friend. She not much of a friend. It was as if she wanted a gay best friend and was shaping him to fit, she didn't know him at all. A good friend would not get someone with sooooo many issues to post a photoshoped pic on a 'dating' site with that slogan. Supportive is not sending a virgin friend out for a hook-up so they can come back and share details.

But it is offered free ;)

This book didn't work for me. There was too much telling rather than showing. I felt like someone was telling me about a book instead of experiencing it myself. I also didn't sense any chemistry between the MCs. Those who've read my review of Trouble & the Wallflower know my thoughts on the dilemma these two guys found themselves facing.

Acquaintances didn’t call us Barbie and Ken simply because we were best friends. We were both pegged as superficial lackwits because of our blonde hair and blue eyes. Few took the time to bother getting to know us. It was easier to stick us in boxes and pretend we were shallow and unworthy of intelligent thought or interesting conversation. We were grateful to have each other to understand how it felt to be dismissed out of hand because of a first impression based on an ignorant stereotype.

Srsly?

OK, beautiful people do have problems. They are likely to receive more unwanted attention, seen as sex objects and as fashion & fitness fanatics.

However let's be honest, unattractive or simply ordinary looking people have it worse. Remember Britain's Got Talent and Ms Boyle's first appearance?

And a paragraph or so later Bridger says to his friend:

And the guy I’d met that night ended up being a condescending asshole who was probably most at home in front of a mirror kissing his own biceps rather than interacting with human beings.

and in the same chapter:

I’d dated, but nothing ever felt right. I never connected. Some of the time it was because the women I went out with were more concerned with looking pretty than being interesting or showing their intelligence through good conversation, as if being smart would be an affront to me. Other times it was because they moved way too fast..

More woes of being flawlessly pretty:

I hated the photo she insisted on me using, but she said it would be great because it was an attention grabber. I looked more like a Ken doll than a human being, but add Photoshop elements in there, and it was downright scary. My skin looked like plastic, but she said it looked flawless, which was exactly my point. I was full of flaws, and she was putting an image out there that made it seem like I was perfect, when I was so very far from that. Apparently, the photo appealed because by the next day, I had several hits on my profile.

I know that the requester asked this (two ukes in love) in their letter and it's not the author's idea but is that really a problem in the first place??

There are a lot of gay men who don’t ever have anal sex, ya know.

Thanks Gina. My thoughts exactly.

Perfect fit. Is it truly possible? We often focus entirely on clicking together in every possible way, we overlook those pieces that might be slightly off.
What happens when the piece that doesn't fit is an important one?
Really important. Now the question becomes, can you still make it work?

Bridger is discovering himself. What does he conclude? He's not straight. He can't say it. He's not ready for the g-word. This is merely one of his apprehensions. He wants to date not hook-up. He wants to take things slow not rush to blow of steam. He wants someone patient and willing to discover his sexuality at his pace. Online dating seemed like the perfect opportunity to begin his search. After several horrific interactions, he's even more nervous than when he began.
He can't figure out what he's doing wrong.
Then he meets Stone. Stone changes everything. Stone IS everything.

Then Stone pulls away. Bridger is crushed, but this is exactly what he needed. He ventures back out and dips his toes cautiously in the dating pool. He finds his voice, his confidence, and can look in the mirror and say it; the g-word isn't scary anymore. His coming out to his parents might very well be my favorite Mom and Dad talk I've ever read. Loved it!

Throughout this time, they continued to feed their friendship and Bridger desires at the same time. They get along seamlessly. Bridger can't help but imagine them together...in every way possible. Finally, he hold his breath and asks Stone out on another date. The passion flares quickly, and then...and then...and then they discover they are both bottoms.
Oh my.
To be honest, this isn't something that I have ever given much thought about. But what a quandary it can be. This takes us back to the question....can they make it work and do they still want to?

A little tell-y at times and I would have enjoyed a bit more insight into Stone. Nevertheless I enjoyed all of the characters and the atypical story line.
It was cute, fun, and FREE.

A full review will follow, but this story was absolutely amazing for me.

First, it should be said that this story was written for me. And I don't say that in any narcisitic way, just because a story works perfectly for me - no, this story was actually designed to fit my prompt for this year's 'Don't Read in the Closet' short story event.

Me and my BF are both bottoms and I was surprised when I started to read this genre that there weren't any books where love overcame problems in the bed. Mostly, characters had perfect sex lifes andd lost their virginity in the perfect sex ever.

I so wanted characters who had fun in bed and problems in bed and realistically dealt with it. Thus after being too late the previous year, I took the opportunity to get my prompt out there and was overjoyed when Posy took it on.

I love the way the story is organized into colors of the rainbow. It felt realistic and loving and there just needed to be a book like this! I know it will not be for everyone and a few people need every book to fullfill their fantasies to distract them from RL. However, I am glad that a situation where two people in love might not fit together sexually as well as in every other way, was handled here with such care and love.

Thank you, Posy. <3

Meh. I didn't love it. I didn't hate it.

Mostly, it just didn't make me *feel* much of anything, really.

The first half of the book started out with promise, but by the middle of the story, it all just sort of became one note for me.

But the unbelievable thing for me was that after dating for 5 whole months , only then did they finally find out out that .

Sorry, you can be focusing on a plethora of other topics for a while, but at some point that one *would* have come up before then. A question as simple, yet important, as "So why did your last serious relationship end?"

I'm glad that there was an HEA, but the ending of the book was a bit sappy sweet for my personal tastes.

Nice guy seeks nice guy for love.

Two regular guys figuring out a relationship. So glad this avoided the miscommunication device when it so blatantly set it up. One of the characters is clearly better at expressing himself than the other and since the story is told from Bridger's viewpoint it keeps us in the dark even more. I would have liked hints from Stone through action if not dialogue to cue in some missing emotion. Every interaction between the two was reactionary on Stone's part, it felt one-sided.

This was OK. I didn't understand why Bridger was so stuck on Stone when Stone was acting like a dick. Plus the issue that stood between them was not small. In the end I didn't buy the resolution and I felt like they would be better as best friends.

2,5 stars, not enough to rounded up it seemed.

This is my reasons,

I think I'm being generous gave this story 2,5. Because the cover is very nice and the ending is just what we've all expected to be.
That's it.
I can't connect with the two MC. Bridger is having a very serious low self esteem, and self confidence issues. He let himself being a doormat for Stone.
And this Stone guy, he's a douche. After one date, he left, and tried to built a relationship with his ex, and when it didn't work as he wanted, he came to Bridger. Pfffttt!!!

And I hated it every time Bridger said "I'm so sorry". Happens a lot.
And this "fight for the bottom" thing, is a turn off for me.
That it. Not impressed.

I found this story quite sweet and gentle. It was the story of Bridger coming to terms with the fact that he was 'not straight'. After building an online friendship with Stone and one date, things don't quite work out as Bridger had hoped. When they eventually do reunite, the story took an unexpected path when it focused on building a relationship when sexual desires don't quite mesh.

This was a warning sign...especially since it was on the first page. Bridger, there is one way to beat ignorant people's stereotypes: BE BIGGER than they are. Be smarter. Be interesting. Don't let them define you. Stating that harmful stereotypes exist and complaining about it does jack shit. I won't even touch the pandora's box of white male privilege here. So, sorry-not-sorry it's hard being beautiful. You're just as shallow as everyone thinks you are.

Because I thought Bridger was an idiot, it was pretty hard to get behind this story. It's excessively formulaic ("We'd been dating nearly five months....'I love you's' had been exchanged at three months. The future had been talked about at four months: we both wanted to get married to someone, and kids weren't out of the question...") and some of the sex scenes were cringeworthy ("zinging pheromones").

The only respectable part of this book is how the main characters overcame their bedroom preferences to be together. In theory, I love this. But so much energy was spent reinforcing the gender binary under the guise of top/bottom dynamics, that the whole discussion fell flat.

So yeah, Forever Under the Rainbow is a solid fail for me, and I can not recommend it to anyone.

Also this review is spot on.

See Meep for an in-deph review.

There was a lot of ruminations and deep thinking on this story, a lot of telling to make sense of what the reader was supposed to understand or buy. BUT I couldn't buy the connection between this couple. I felt that Bridger-from the beginning-was the one that fought for this relationship while Stone gave up too easily. We are also supposed to believe that these young men were satisfied with their conversations, their walks in the park, watching movies and going out with friends more than sex because that had never been a priority for them. Kissing and cuddling was as satisfying as having sex, so when they discovered that they were sexually incompatible, they found a way to make it work. Toys!

I'm a romantic, and I want to believe that if you love someone no matter the problem, it can get worked out, but when it's such an intimate part of yourself, and of your life, you better pray that you discover that type of incompatibility when you're -oh lets say 81? or so...

This was a very cute and sweet story. In many ways it reminded me of Kade Boehme's Trouble & the Wallflower but while both showed constructive ways to get around this obstacle, I felt that Boehme dealt with the 'issue' better. Still, Roberts came up with some sexy resolutions and a heartfelt talk that brought these two closer together, . Overall I think it could have done better with some more length and a bit more detail of their relationship toward the end and a bit less of the 'gloss over', but this was an enjoyable story and I'm glad I took the time to read it.

I actually read this a few years ago but for some reason it showed in my library as unread; so, I read it again and this time I’ll provide a review.
Overall I really enjoyed this story of two men, Bridger and Stone, who fall in love and, despite having some significant issues, discover what is really important in a relationship and make it enduring. I particularly liked the primary issue of their potential incompatability and the way they deal with it because it flies in the face of the stereotype that those who are not gay men believe about gay men and the notions that are applied to them.
The story starts off a bit slow as Bridger goes through a number of somewhat neurotic gyrations as he grows into accepting his sexuality. I liked that both characters were portrayed realistically flawed with one needy and the other selfish. It just added another demension to their relationship.

This was a refreshing and unique story that gives you a glimpse of the building of a relationship from the beginning to the HEA. I especially loved Bridger who was compassionate, self aware and refused to compromise on what he wanted.

The characters were very well developed and the story was a slow burning, sweet journey. It's such a rare treat to be able to read a story that spans a length of time (here we gets glimpses over the part of 19 months) where the characters are open, honest, communicative and receptive to the others needs. The subject matter was certainly different and it was a really enjoyable read.

It bothered me that Stone and Bridger would go so long without communication to resolve their sexual issue. They were so open and honest about everything until they hit this bump in the road and the days in which they didn't talk bugged me. It wasn't an issue that would sort itself out and the absence was hurtful - a characteristic, that to me, didn't jive with either of their personalities.

One more issue that got to me personally

This story was lovely. Easy to read and full of emotion. It was an emotional subject to cover, but handled so well it didn't feel full of angst despite the fact that I actually felt quite desperate when the two characters spent some time apart to "think things over". Despite knowing the prompt had asked for a happy ending the writer still made me worry for a little while.
I like that this was about the deep connection between two people and not just about the sex. It was about their finding a way to be together that wasn't focused on the bedroom which so many stories don't seem to do.
I love that Bridger and Stone stayed together and found a happy compromise, that their love for each other was enough to overcome something that could have easily caused their break up.
Too many relationships in stories and in real life, are based on sex alone. Theirs most definitely isn't. Despite their different, or rather, similar needs in the bedroom the foundation for their relationship was already formed and the depth of their bond made them want to work it all out. That's how relationships should be.

Bridger is new to the concept of dating men. In fact, he's really only comfortable labeling himself as "not straight" and nothing more. His path of exploration leads him online where he meets Stone, who seems interesting, and convinces him to go on a date. While Bridger enjoys himself and feels a connection, Stone doesn't seem to feel the same way, telling Bridger the time isn't right, leaving Bridger feeling a bit blown off--and suspecting it has to do with his inexperience. While Bridger sets out to find someone else, he can't help thinking that Stone really is the one and wondering if he might somehow get him to come around.

This was a simple and easy to follow story. The characters are interesting (though we don't get too much of Stone) and everything seems to flow well. Plot-wise, I would have like to see more in the way of relationship development--a bit more of a build--but it wasn't so stark that it really detracted from the overall story.

The tag “almost perfect for each other” describes this wonderful story really well. It’s a story about learning to communicate and compromise and realising love is very much worth fighting for.
Bridger grew during the story and ends up at the end feeling more comfortable and confident in himself. Bridger annoyed me in the beginning because he kept talking about the types of guys he had been getting attention from, so I couldn’t believe it took him that long to actually review his profile and change it.
For parts of this story I didn’t feel the connection between Bridger and Stone as I felt portions were skipped and we were just told about the moments.
The last couple of chapters were . Ah the last two lines – so gorgeously romantic and sappy.

Online dating is a risky business, since you never know who really is on the other end of the online conversation, but for Bridger and Stone that is only the beginning of their issues. They may get along really well in theory (which is more than what happened to Bridger with his other attempts), but when they meet up and get into the details, they discover that, while they like each other, they are not compatible in the bedroom. The rest of the story deals with them figuring out if they can deals with that, and how big of a problem it really is.

While the story deals with an interesting topic, and I liked the fact it put romance above sex, I couldn't get into the characters at all. Maybe I missed something, but it ended up being no more than "okay" for me. If you like stories with tormented characters and a less-than-average subject matter, give it a go. It might be much more to your taste than it was to mine.

A relationship that's not built on sex? What a refreshing concept. Although Stone and Bridger (what soap opera names), discover they're both bottoms, it causes a bit of angst but it doesn't end the relationship. They figure out pretty quickly what's really important to them.

A lot of the relationship part -- other than the sexual problem -- is summarized (everyone agrees they're perfect for each other, we're told), but we don't really get to witness them as a couple.

My problem with the book was that I didn't get a good feel for Stone. He seemed aloof and not as invested in the relationship. Most of the book, it seemed a classic case of "He's just not that into you." So when Stone said that Bridge was his soul mate, I was kind of surprised. Strange because this is a romance novel. The epilogue was a nice.

slow pace if you like those type this is for you.Bridger finds love online who he finds is stone. They get to know each other, before they meet for a date even after one date they both date others. one dated his ex and others online. which i guess it should have been fine but they sort of could have told each other before hand, but i guess sometime its the way it is. So they give dating another try and this time it works but now they problem is in the bedroom how they going to satisfactory each other without cheating which is good they talk and they work things out. But sexually is not all things if you love someone work out things and have a balance which these guy did and i guess it worked for them.
