Behind every welcoming smile lies a chilling secret.
Everything was fantastic when they first moved in next door. The epitome of friendly, caring, trustworthy…until you got to know them. Then the nightmare began.
In this chilling collection of thirteen tales, meet the neighbors that want to make your life a living hell. From deranged to deadly, depraved to diabolical, these stories will forever make you realize what evil hides behind the curtains. But once you've glimpsed the darkness that lurks next door, you'll forever question who—or what—lives beyond your own white picket fence.

I am not doing my traditional backstory as this is an anthology of short stories. Since this book is an anthology then I will be listing out a handful of stories to just give you a small idea of what lies inside this book and I am handing out a cryptic note next to the stories listed on here. I did enjoy all 14 stories that are within the pages of this book but do not want to give too much away about what lies inside as the readers will need to experience the stories first hand. Following is a taste of what to expect:
Jay Bower Pine Ridge Homeowners Association: "Welcome to the neighborhood or welcome to hell".
M J Mars The Moondial: "Don't mess with the moondial or else...."
Candace Nola: Toddler Toy Graveyard: "Nosy neighbor gets just rewards"
Mike Salt Agoraphobia: "Not of this world"
Nick Roberts Come to the Shed: "Normal shed or maybe not?"
Megan Stockton Solitary: "What is really going on behind the prison bars?"
Thoughts:
This was a great collection of neighbor stories gone wrong. Lots of extreme situations and the foreword by author, Duncan Ralston puts the book more into perspective of what to expect within all the stories. So if you live close to neighbors you might want to look closer at them as you never know what goes on behind closed doors. Giving this book four "Beware Naughty Neighbors" stars!
This is one of the best anthologies I've read in a while. Every story, without exception, is well written and entertaining. Incredible tales, not to mention an equally entertaining foreward from Duncan Ralston, all about horrendous neighbors of all kinds. Tons of sub-genres are represented, slasher, serial killer, cosmic, folk, grief, even erotic! There is literally something for everyone. Here's a bit more detail about some of my favorites!
Pine Ridge Homeowners Association by Jay Bower- A scary tale about why HOAs are the absolute worst! A couple move into a new house and notice the neighbors behaving strangely. This one got a little claustrophobic, and I loved it!
Toddler Toy Graveyard by Candace Nola- An intense tale of an absolute bitch of a neighbor that goes from hateful and meddlesome, to downright dangerous. Tension-filled and witchy, I really loved the ending!
Agoraphobia by Mike Salt- A paranoid agoraphobic is convinced he is being watched and fucked with in his apartment. Is it all in his head, or is something sinister actually happening? I felt drawn into this character's madness from the start!
Come to the Shed by Nick Roberts- Such an amazing job of building tension until it gets incredibly scary, all leading up to a big reveal and climax. So well written!
Solitary by Megan Stockton- An inmate is convinced that prisoners are able to escape when put into solitary confinement. He makes it so he's sent there to check it out for himself and finds that his new neighbor in the cell next door is very strange. By far the most original and unique of all the stories.
There Goes the Neighborhood by Brian Asman- An absolutely perfectly told story. A unique twist on serial killer tales that was highly entertaining throughout.
R.E. Sargent and Steven Pajak have a tremendous ability to bring together the best authors around for their anthologies, and My Evil Fucking Neighbor does just that. Highly recommend!
I had so much fun with the majority of these stories that I’ve got to give this anthology full marks!
Pine Ridge Homeowners Association by Jay Bower ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Gloriously gory, I wanted so much more, I was hooked! Finished too soon. At perhaps a 100+ page novella it would have had room for background, and an explanation that answered the questions I’ve been left with. A bloody, and fun short story nonetheless, deserving of four solid stars.
The Moondial by M J Mars ⭐️⭐️
This piqued my curiosity initially and kept me reading until the end, although it did feel as though there should have been more to it. It kind of dropped off into a ‘oh, okay, that’s that then’ moment and I felt a little let down. Plus I had to suspend my belief regarding the parents allowing their teen to go into the weirdo neighbours house on her own. I think, bottom line here is I just wanted more ‘Moondial’ in this Moondial story. Deserving of two stars because I thought it was okay.
The Girl Next Door by Steven Pajak ⭐️ Nope, I didn’t like this. I can see why the author chose the title as a nod to Jack Ketchum’s original story of the same name. CW: rape, torture. Absolutely not for me.
Toddler Toy Graveyard by Candace Nola ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A difficult read for me for the first half, I’m not a fan of body horror anymore it seems, (was I ever?) especially if it’s targeted at kids/animals. But the second half the story really took off and I enjoyed how the evil neighbour next door got their just desserts. CW: violence against kids.
The House Special by Rebecca Rowland ⭐️
This one didn’t work for me. I didn’t like the characters or the story, sadly.
The Only Good Guy in Your Life by Gage Greenwood ⭐️⭐️
Grief, control, jealousy, all grown from a close childhood friendship leads to obsession and a terrifying conclusion. The story was okay but I’m not keen on young protagonists, even though it moved along into their adulthood eventually.
Agoraphobia by Mike Salt ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A government experiment? Lizard people? This one kept me wide eyed to find out WTF was going on!
Come to the Shed by Nick Roberts ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
‘Monsters exist, but they don’t have sharp claws or pointy teeth. They live next door to you’. (and they may well be named Phil). Roberts sums up this entire anthology with his opening line for his insta-shed-based tale. (Btw, does anyone know if this the same author who wrote the brilliant The Exorcist’s House? Only it’s my favourite story out of all these, but I noticed it’s not included on his author page! 🤔)
Under Floorboards by Jeremy Megargee ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
’A home for the haunted ones’. Megargee’s writing is a powerhouse of passion and darkness. The way this story was told completely blew my socks off! I’ll be looking at what else JM has written, I’m very impressed.
What’s Your Name? by R E Sargent ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The ending made me laugh out loud 😂 ‘Opinions vary’.* Such a cracker of an ending, bravo Mr Sargent, bravo! 👏🏻 *always picture Swayze/Dalton in Roadhouse saying this! 🤩
The Challenge by Nikki Noir ⭐️
Noooo, way too crass in the sex acts department from the start for my taste. I got distracted by ’Didn’t you say you were sick of Susan and her beefy vagina?’ on the second page. It’s funny, I know, I’m not completely devoid of smutty humour but come on, seriously?!! 🤣
Bleeding from the Inside by John Durgin ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Having moved into my new home just last year, I’m still getting to ‘know’ my neighbours. Being the antisocial introverted middle aged grump that I am, I only get to ‘know’ them when I bump into them purely by accident. Anyway, don’t be like Jenny and ignore your gut feeling about your new neighbour, first impressions, and all that. Don’t give them the benefit of the doubt if you think they’re up to no good. You might just end up in a situation.
Solitary by Megan Stockton ⭐️⭐️⭐️
A different setting to the other stories, you may have guessed by the title that this one’s set in prison. I enjoyed this but not quite as much as I hoped. ’…murderers fit into three categories here: brains and charm, weird as fuck, or no brains all beef’.
There Goes the Neighborhood by Brian Asman ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The very last story kicks off with - ‘Doug Renner began to suspect his new neighbor Randall might be a serial killer the night he spotted him digging a very large backyard hole at three in the morning’. So, yeah, that’s me all eyes from the word go! 👀 I had great fun with this bunch of weirdos, Asman’s dark humour is *chefs kiss*.
Fourteen tales of neighbours gone bad, this is a fantastic collection of short stories from indie horror authors and there is not a bad story here which is rare!
My top 3 were, The Moondial, Under Floorboards and my absolute favourite, There Goes The Neighbourhood.
My thoughts on each, beware the HOA, garden gnomes are precious, it’s always the good girls, you get back what you put out, the third dose is the charm, best friends forever, paranoia payback, the perfectly normal man next door, the watcher, a bad neighbour moves in, it’s couples game night, the husband who will do anything for his wife, escape from solitary, neighbourhood watch.
That cover is insane and I love it so much, it fit so well with this anthology.
It being an anthro, of course I need to tell you about my top picks, but it seems like that's getting harder and harder lately, too many good stories lol
But here we go and I might cheat, we will see.
Agoraphobia by Mike Salt Being agoraphobic is hard enough, but what happens when you think you are being watched, the outside is already horrifying to you, but now, your own home? And even worse, is it your house that is haunted, or is it your brain ??? Are those Lizard people , or just the coat rack... The freaking tension had me on edge.
Come to the Shed by Nick Roberts Sheds aren't a big deal right? Oh this is a Nick Roberts shed, going to need to regroup for this one. Sometimes the true monsters are closer then you think. The tension was delicious.
There Goes the Neighborhood by Brian Asman This story was excellent, serial killer stories, they are all the same right? Not this one.. Wonder what the neighbor is digging that big hole for.. Fuck the HOA always lol
Pine Ridge Homeowners Association by Jay Bower This one I need more of, it was amazing and quick, too quick, but I don't mean that in a bad way, I mean that in a I'm super greedy and I need more of this fucked up place..
In my years, I've had some pretty crappy neighbors. Ones that let their dogs run around and act like it's no problem at all, ones that shoot fireworks off in August at 2 am and wake my kids and dogs up, and so on. But NONE of them compare to the neighbors in this book. Hopefully none of your neighbors do, either.
Some of my favorites came from MJ Mars, Megan Stockton, Gage Greenwood, John Durgin, and I think my very favorite one was Brian Asman's. It was a great way to end the anthology!
There was only one story in this entire collection that I didn't care for (that's only because I don't like ridiculous amounts of spice, and the MC was just disgusting 🤣).
If you want to read about some unhinged neighbors and their disturbing antics, make sure you grab this one!
This might be one of the best anthologies I've read and boy do I mean it! All of the stories here were great. I couldn't pick out a single bad story. While I thought all the stories were great, these were my favorite ones.
Pine Ridge Homeowner's Association by Jay Bower Toddler Toy Graveyard by Candace Nola The Only Good Guy in your Life by Gage Greenwood Come to the Shed by Nick Roberts What's Your Name by R.E. Sargent The Challenge by Nikki Noir There Goes the Neighborhood by Brian Asman
I had so much reading about the different evil neighbors. So much so that I managed to finish this in two days. Well done to everyone in this collection of stories.
Took me a while to get through this one because of some other priorities, but like the majority of anthologies, there were hits and misses. However, for the most part, this was a fun idea and these authors came up with some novel variations on the neighborhood theme.
Forward by Duncan Ralston: Engaging foreword from Duncan Ralston. I’m disappointed that he did not include an evil neighbour story, as I would have enjoyed that. At least he provided an intro that took me down a few rabbit holes and set the reader up to enjoy what comes next.
PINE RIDGE HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION JAY BOWER
WOW! Just wow! This was a mix of Jack Ketchum with Bentley Little mixed in. Horrific little story and a great start to the anthology . 5/5
THE MOONDIAL MJ MARS
Loved this story. Fast and quick, but filled with suspense. What, oh what… will dear, trusting Lennie find in the basement? Not what you expected exactly! 5/5
THE GIRL NEXT DOOR STEVEN PAJAK
Started off very nicely, but dulled by the end. Could have benefited from some selective editing 3/5
TODDLER TOY GRAVEYARD CANDACE NOLA
This was okay. Took awhile to get to the point and was a revenge tale with not a lot of bite. 3/5
THE HOUSE SPECIAL REBECCA ROWLAND
Bonus points for adding the title of the book. Not a bad story, although obvious what was going on. 3.5/5
THE ONLY GOOD GUY IN YOUR LIFE GAGE GREENWOOD
Interesting take on neighbour idea. Very readable story., although the characters, especially Violet, were unlikable. 4/5
AGORAPHOBIA MIKE SALT
Pretty wild and interesting short story. Although some parts stretched credibility, it still worked as a mystery. 4.5/5
COME TO THE SHED NICK ROBERTS
Excellent! Although Roberts told the reader who the villain was from the start, this story still landed a solid punch to the gut. Wonderful short story. Terrifying. 5/5
UNDER FLOORBOARDS JEREMY MEGARGEE
I had a terrible time getting into this one. The ending touched me though. Just took a long time getting there. 2.5/5
WHAT’S YOUR NAME? R.E. SARGENT
Although I foresaw the ending a mile away, this was a fun, little story. 4/5
THE CHALLENGE NIKKI NOIR
I mean…. It was pretty obvious where this was going. Although it was an entertaining story, there were too many plot holes. The revenge fantasy could have been tighter. 3.5/5
BLEEDING FROM THE INSIDE JOHN DURGIN
Great little story! Very suspenseful. I don’t know about the ending though as it was kind of a stretch, but the rest was great. 4.5/5
SOLITARY MEGAN STOCKTON
Excellent story! Extremely unique for a neighbour story. 5/5
THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD BRIAN ASMAN
This was loads of fun to read with some great humour and terrific characters. Great way to end the anthology. 4.5/5
This anthology of 14 short to novelette length stories had a great concept and definitely lived up to the promise. The title says it all, and from what I understand based on the copyright page, each story was written in 2025 for this book, so you are getting new and original stories. While some are better than others, the three that stand out the most were "The Only Good Guy In Your Life" by Gage Greenwood, "Come To The Shed" by Nick Roberts, "There Goes The Neighborhood" by Brian Asman, with a solid honorable mention to "What's Your Name?" by R. E. Sargent. The next tier of stories - still very entertaining - actually begins the anthology, with "Pine Ridge Homeowners Association" by Jay Bower, "The Moondial" by M.J. Mars, and "The Girl Next Door" by Steven Pajak. The rest of the stories drop down a bit, but all are worth reading. I hope the editors continue these cool themes for anthologies, because this one is a winner.
This one was a lot of fun, I actually finished it a few weeks ago but haven't had time to jump on here to give a proper review. As with many anthologies some stories hold my attention a bit more than others. All of them are worth reading though a lot of fun, a few stuck with me long term though like There Goes the Neighborhood by Brian Asman. This one was great I loved the premise and would have definitely read a whole book fleshing out the characters in this neighborhood a bit more. John Durgin's Bleeding from the Inside was a lot of fun as well, the build up was great, I couldn't figure out where he was going with this story, but the ending was brutal in the best way. I could go on because after thinking about these stories for a few weeks all of them stuck with me in different ways. Definitely pick this one up!
I really enjoyed reading this book. The stories are very different from each one of them. I especially loved reading Candace Hola and Rebecca Rowland. In Candace book Toddler Toy Graveyard it was very different from the other books. I really love how it ends. You should definitely check it out.In Rebecca book you think you know where it is going but the ending went in a whole other way. Can't wait to read more books by these amazing authors.
My Evil Fucking Neighbor is an anthology based on the concept of, you guessed it: neighbors! I've had some pretty rotten neighbors in my life, so these stories scratched a mental itch I didn't even know I had. My personal favorites were "Pine Ridge Homeowners Association" by Jay Bower, "The Girl Next Door" by Steven Pajak, and "Solitary" by Megan Stockton. Get on this one folks, there's no a bad story in here!
The guys at Sinister Smile have pulled off another banger of an anthology! Every single story is well written and really entertaining. I think there is something here for every horror sub-genre fan. Come spend time with the most evil neighbors to exist!
Imagine living in a neighborhood where you are the only person that’s not a killer, or maybe your lifelong bestie is obsessed with you, or perhaps your kid and his buddy are killers, or even your neighboring cellmate in prison is out of this world – that’s what you get and more in My Evil Fµcking Neighbor. The guys at Sinister Smile Press put together a collection of the most awful people to ever move in into your hood.
These twisted tales are provided by some of the biggest names in indie horror, Jay Bower, M J Mars, Candace Nola, Gage Greenwood, Nick Roberts, John Durgin, and Megan Stockton, and many more.
So grab this book, shut your blinds and treat yourself to some truly disturbing stories. You never know what that guy across the street really does behind closed doors.
