Gennady Spirin (1948- ) is a Russian painter and children's book illustrator. A graduate of the Surikov School of Fine Art in Moscow and the Moscow Stroganov Institute of Art, he is noted for his unique style of watercolor illustration. He has illustrated works by classic authors such as William Shakespeare, Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy as well as children's books by contemporary celebrities. His oil paintings hang in public and private galleries throughout the world, and he has been profiled by The New York Times. His depiction of The Nutcracker was selected by Saks Fifth Avenue as the centerpiece of their famous Christmas display in 1997 and 1998. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1992, Spirin immigrated with his wife and sons to the United States, ultimately settling in Princeton, NJ, where he has lived and worked since.
This is my favorite Psalm from the Holy Bible (Psalm 23). Gennady Spirin is an AMAZING painter, her style for this painting reminds me of The Garden of Earthly Delights. I'm glad that the book comes with a poster with the entire painting. The painting is used in sections to illustrate this book.
Each line of the twenty-third psalm is accompanied by an elegant illustration, which sometimes contains fantastical elements (e.g., a shepherd's herd includes a lion). The individual illustrations are actually parts of an oil painting by Gennady that is reproduced in the back of the book as a large foldout. Older readers as well as children will find this book appealing.
The individual illustrations on the pages are part of the same painting. The last page is a foldout of the whole picture. Really cool to see how they fit together. The text is word for word the 23rd psalm.
