Friendship, a Pilgrim dog, describes the voyage of the Mayflower, the colonists' arrival in America, the hardships of their first winter, and the celebration of their first Thanksgiving.
A wonderful historical fiction about the first Thanksgiving. It was a fun reminder of our lessons about Samoset and Squanto and the Mayflower. My 6 yr old loved reading about something he learned in a past History lessons. The pictures were bright and colorful so my 3 yr old twins enjoyed it too. A great book for reinforcing some History lessons.
I would not take this as a historical fiction book. I liked the art. I found the story lacking. I would also advise parent's to not let your child explore his art work by themselves.
I liked the stylized folk art like illustrations. The text did not flow well as 90% of the sentences were written like a child of seven or eight; also this story is told from the point of view of Friendship, who is a dog. While the Pilgrims did bring a saniel and a mastiff with them, the dog does not resemble either of these breeds. Overall the illustrations aren't strong enough to overcome the the writing style.
