A short Christmas trip home should be more relaxing for Geeves and Max than their normal graduate school studies. At least, it was supposed to be. Unfortunately, Max's sister, Courtney, has had an abrupt change in attitude and behavior, making the once amenable teenager a nightmare to deal with. Geeves's ex-boyfriend popping up at an inopportune time doesn't help matters.
A shopping trip to the mall proves to be Geeves's downfall, though, when his heart makes a purchase that will change all of their lives. A purchase that sends Courtney running smack dab into a snowstorm and Geeves chasing after the confused girl.
Freddy grew up in the Midwest, playing sports and running around outside. And honestly, that much has not changed since Freddy was small and throwing worms at other kids, expect worm throwing has been replaced with a healthy geocaching addiction. Freddy enjoys traveling and holds the view a person should continually to learn about new things and people whenever possible.
Freddy's contemporary LGBTQ book, Incubation: Finding Peace 2, won 3rd Place - Best Gay Erotic Fiction in the 2012 Rainbow Awards. In 2013, Freddy's story, Internment, tied for 3rd Place - Best Gay Fantasy in the Rainbow Awards. Freddy's steampunk/SF story, Feel Me, was a finalist and honorable mention in the 2014 Rainbow Awards for SF.
Ok, finally I got around to reading the second part of this concoction. I made it up to 40% 'pat's shoulder' but this delusional sister was too much. Sorry, couldn't take it anymore.
Snowed In started out strong. A 14-year-old girl, Courtney, questioning her brother’s boyfriend about safe sex- it was easy to imagine and laugh about the awkwardness. However, as it turns out, the story became a bit predictable for me. Especially when it came to Courtney, her modus operandi and why she had an aversion to George and Max dating.
Regardless, I did enjoy the novel. The relationship between George and Max, which seems to have started in an earlier book, is strong and the author aptly conveys just how well Max understands his partner. The sex between them ranges between incredibly hot and sweet and was a pleasure to read. Furthermore, Freddy Mackay makes Snowed In more than a Christmas read as she also touches upon real life issues such as gay discrimination, safe sex, consequences and hiding from ourselves and our feelings. Though the general plot is expected, the author has a knack for describing the tense moments as well as the happy ones.
Finally, the end of Snowed In surprised me. Though it is not sad, it left a bittersweet taste in my mouth. Overall, Snowed In was a nice read with a few life lessons included.
George and Max first stumbled their way into our hearts in Moving Mountains in Spring 2012. For that, I fell for them and looked forward to this story for some time!!!
George, Max, both sets of parents as well as Max's brother Kyle and sister Courtney are spending Christmas at George's parents cabin. The two families had spent time together before, in the summer, where everyone got along famously and no one thought there would be any issue with another vacation together.
However, the book begins with Courtney cornering George to question him on safe sex practices with her brother. Which could be a start to a comically awkward story since she suggests "everyone" could hear them having sex and she wants to know if her brother is safe. It becomes clear that something has happened for Courtney because where she loved George in the summer, now she has nothing but animosity for his relationship with Max and she directs all of it at George.
Now, if you read the first book, you know George has been hurt in the past, that he plays things so close to the chest you sometimes have to pry his fingers apart to find out what's really going on, so he takes this "attack" from Courtney very hard, while Max just gets mad at his sister! It's bad enough that George and Max switch rooms with Kyle as they are next to Courtney and a vent in the wall suggests that is likely how she heard them having sex. But how to resolve things when they are all in the cabin for a week?!?
Well, it involves George doing Christmas shopping alone (although with a list from Max), letting fears drive him to make what could be a significant purchase for him and Max, running into then being cornered by his former lover (who wants to keep up appearances but maybe he and George could still go on the side?), followed by Courtney running away right before a storm hits. Now there are unresolved issues and worry over where Courtney is and how soon they can search.
George is the one who comes up with an idea of where she may be when he can't sleep and follows his gut rather than wake Max and tell him, but it then gives an opportunity for him to find out what is going on and can things be resolved, since he'd told Courtney the one thing she wanted him to do he could not do, which was give up Max and let him go.
I love the two lead characters, Max can be a stereotypical redhead (get mad now, sort it out later), but he loves George and ultimately wants everyone to get along. George is easily my favorite character of the series because anyone who has been hurt can relate to how he feels, how cautious he is, but you so hope he'll find his happy ending!
Great story, great characters, paced well and the issues dealt with in a very real way. I'm hooked and hoping for more about these two!
This story is part of a series and is best read in order; it is also a good idea to have also read the Finding Peace series as some references to events in that series are mentioned. George and Max are celebrating Christmas together with their families but problems arise from Courtney’s attitude, Max’s sister throws a spanner in the works with her about face towards George and it causes insecurities to rise in George. Now Max and his family try to get to the bottom of the problem while salvaging Christmas, and George confronts the past while out shopping… can George and Max have a happy Christmas or will events ruin their first Christmas as a couple?
First off this story isn’t for those who want a blissful happy story all the way through, there’s some tough issues to overcome and some soul searching involved before we get to the happy part and even that is bittersweet. Both George and Max are exactly as I remembered them with George still being awkward with people and Max with his harsh words when in a temper, they are a great couple and their love is very strong. And they need it as their relationship and love are tested to the extreme. All the characters are well portrayed in this story and it is a very angsty storyline, very angsty which really tears George up and frustrates everyone else.
There isn’t much more that I can say that wouldn’t give away the entire storyline and plot, all I can say is I hated Courtney for what she put George and Max through and then loathed her for putting her family through the terror they must have felt, she might have been a teenager but she was foul, I couldn’t find much sympathy for her even when she explained everything. And George oh George taking everything on for himself was heart-breaking to see, Max had the right idea and I can only say that I am glad he has George’s heart safely guarded. We do get to see some happy moments between George and Max and we see George put Joe (ex-boyfriend) firmly behind him, the sex between Max and George is hot and they truly are a well suited couple.
So if you love bittersweet Christmas’s, true love, a tough storyline, lots of angst, putting the past to rest, some danger and two men who are wonderful then this is the book for you.
We have a new visit with George and Max. They guys are enjoying their relationship and looking forward to spending time together with family for Christmas. That's what made the attack from Max's sister so devastating to everyone. The story is bittersweet through much of the story and draws you in. The sad thing is so many people are being taught this ugly harshness everyday. The lesson too in this story is that you can having healing and restoration but sometimes even when everything turns out alright in the end the drama can have lasting effects.
If someone were to say such horrible things to me, it will need me a few days to get over it, instead of just 'forgetting' the incidents. Made this story a wee-bit rushed towards the end.
Follows on from Moving Mountains and I'd give a 3.5 if available. George and Max try to have Christmas with their families - until Max's sister distrupts things - and she did seem a bit extreme. I enjoyed this more than Moving Mountains, possibly because their relationship is a bit older, though George still needs to get his head out of the clouds!
