Liam Despite winning Gabriel’s heart, my trials are not yet over when I’m stuck competing with Gabriel’s cat for his affection (why is she only evil when he’s not looking?), dealing with coworkers trying to befriend me (I should have blackmailed more of them), and worst of all... meeting Gabriel’s parents (whose affection I will win with lavish presents).
Oh, and hunting down another killer. Though that’s the easy part.
But when a crime scene brings me face-to-face with someone from my past, I realize I might have to fight to keep my secrets hidden from those who would tear me away from Gabriel forever.
Gabriel Tackling Liam’s foster sister to the ground outside of a crime scene is the last thing I expected to do. It’s clear she needs help, and Liam might be the only person who can assist her. People are turning up dead, but if we fail to find the connection between them before it’s too late, innocent people might end up taking the fall or piquing the serial killer’s interest.
Thankfully, Liam’s no stranger to challenges as he draws me further into his secretive world where the vilest of humanity reside around every corner. He’s opening my eyes and making me fall even deeper in love with every breath as I realize that his darkness isn’t driving me away but pulling me even closer.
This man who is willing to burn the world down for me doesn’t realize just how far I’d go for him.
Alice Winters started writing stories as soon as she was old enough to turn her ideas into written words. She loves writing a variety of things from romance and comedy to action. She also enjoys reading, horseback riding, and spending time with her pets.

Am I the only dumb one who didn’t fully understand what happened with all these murders that ended up being somehow connected? I did not dislike the book, but I can’t say I loved it either. I don’t mind not knowing exactly what happened or who did it until it’s revealed at the end, but I couldn’t even follow the steps of the investigation at one point.
While I enjoyed the intrigue in the first book, I struggled to get into this one. It felt all over the place, with different cases connected in ways that I couldn’t fully understand, even after Liam explained the connection. It was convoluted and confusing, and I ended up reading without truly understanding why they were going to one place or connecting cases. Maybe I am too tired to understand this one (or too dumb), but it just felt like many random parts thrown in together without real cohesion.
I did end up making sense, but I feel that there were so many elements that were forced into the main investigation that ended up not being relevant or really useful, and it just made everything more confusing. I do enjoy some manipulation and double crossing, but at one point, I just had no idea of what was happening with the tattoos, the suicide-that-was-not-a-suicide, Abby, the mysterious murders, the guy from Liam’s past, Christa… There were just so many elements to try to connect, my brain couldn’t follow.
I wish Gabriel had more depth. And more backbone, too. He realizes that Liam’s obsession is not healthy, and tries to explain to him that they need to take their time with their relationship, but does not argue that much when Liam schemes to have them move in together. He just follows Liam around and accepts everything with a smile on his face. I do like that he truly did try to understand Liam’s point of view regarding the murders of the guilty who got free, but besides that, I feel that his character is rather bland and unidimensional.
Liam suddenly showing more feeling was nice, but also felt weird. It did not fit with the sociopathic and cold persona he had in the first book. Now he is joking around with Gabriel and even other detectives, which is nice, but feels weird coming from him because he acted like a robot in the first book, besides his unhealthy obsession with Gabriel. At one point, Liam felt like a Leeland ripoff, and it just does not work with the character we saw in the first book. I wish the author had kept the OTT humor toned down as she did in the first book, considering the darker themes and the personality of both main characters.
As stated in my review of the first book, the romance is cute, but toxic. I love both Liam and Gabriel, but the fact that Liam’s happiness relies only on Gabriel’s presence in his life puts an immense pressure on Gabriel… I also find that they were very intense for a couple who’s been dating for only a month or so. I can understand Liam’s intensity, since he’s been obsessed with Gabriel for a while, and does not really understand the subtelties of human interactions and dating, but while Gabriel tried to keep some distance between them since they had only been dating for a month, he turned around and professed super intense love declarations. I love a power couple and swoonworthy moments, but I am not a huge fan of super intense love declarations, no matter how long the characters have been together.
Other secondary characters take more room in this book, and I loved it. Seeing Matthew, a fellow detective, try to break through Liam’s walls and slowly become a kind of tentative friend was cute and funny too, because Liam didn’t feel like he needed to make any friends, but Gabriel kept on trying to have him be friendlier with Matthew. Jesse, the medical examiner, is also more present in this book, and I would enjoy a spinoff about him and Matthew (and knowing the author, it might already be a future book she has planned).
I actually love the character Liam so much 😂 There is the usual brand of Alice Winters' humour, but it's way more toned down than the Hitman series so it works really well for the serial killer detective and his sweet Gabriel.
I love the relationship between Liam and Gabriel and the way it's developing. Gabriel knowing that Liam will do whatever he says gave him so much power and he was so funny with wielding it. I also really enjoy the way Liam is an absolute fool for Gabriel but can't stand anyone else - mostly!
Matthew is growing on me and his friendship with Liam was really entertaining!
Really liked the crime solving aspect of this book too, and I hope there's more to come in this series.
Liam: Despite winning Gabriel’s heart, my trials are not yet over when I’m stuck competing with Gabriel’s cat for his affection (why is she only evil when he’s not looking?), dealing with coworkers trying to befriend me (I should have blackmailed more of them), and worst of all... meeting Gabriel’s parents (whose affection I will win with lavish presents). Oh, and hunting down another killer. Though that’s the easy part. But when a crime scene brings me face-to-face with someone from my past, I realize I might have to fight to keep my secrets hidden from those who would tear me away from Gabriel forever. Gabriel: Tackling Liam’s foster sister to the ground outside of a crime scene is the last thing I expected to do. It’s clear she needs help, and Liam might be the only person who can assist her. People are turning up dead, but if we fail to find the connection between them before it’s too late, innocent people might end up taking the fall or piquing the serial killer’s interest. Thankfully, Liam’s no stranger to challenges as he draws us further into his secretive world where the vilest of humanity reside around every corner. He’s opening our eyes and making us fall even deeper in love with every breath as we begin to further realize that his darkness isn’t driving me away but pulling me even closer. This man who is willing to burn the world down for me doesn’t realize just how far I’d go for him. Right back into the world of Liam and Gaberiel, the world where Liam absolutely adores Gabriel and Gabriel loves Liam and the cat, who barely tolerates the humans.... the cat, not Lian. Liam likes most human's just fine:) Gaberiel has finally been able to accept Liam's slightly altered "moral" compass which is something resembling a homicidal Sherlock Holmes.
Alice Winters is one of my favorite M/M Romance authors. I love her talent for blending humor, love, mystery, and suspense all together to make for such an enjoyable reading experience. As usual, this book, like the last one, had me guessing the entire time, making it an exciting and pleasurable read. The mystery this time involved people and events from Liam's past. We learn a lot more about him. There were also multiple cases going on at the same time that all eventually came together in the end.
It was a great plot with well-developed characters, the perfect amount of humor, and a "who done it" element that keeps you flipping pages. I would recommend this series to anyone that likes M/M Romances, good mysteries and stories that have a bit of humor. The books really need to be read in order.
Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.
Books full of banter and humor rarely does it for me, but Alice Winters makes me laugh sometimes. These books are a little more gritty and violent than many of their other books, but still has that Winters charm and humor. The premise is great. Homicide detective who kills bad guys and doesn’t give two shits about anyone other than his detective partner, Gabriel. God help those who threaten Gabriel. Liam will burn down the world to keep him safe, and he’ll be a sarcastic — yet hilarious — asshole to everyone else while doing it.
There’s plenty of murder mystery goodness, interactions with Gabriel’s ‘angel’ cat who tears Liam to shreds on the daily, hilarious — reluctant — attempted friendships with coworkers, and much more. If you enjoy suspense but on the lighter side with plenty of funny moments, this book is fab. I assume there will be more books with these guys, but you can read the first two without issue. There are no cliffhangers in either book.
I was a bit disappointed with how unserious the first book was, but I was more prepared for the Alice Winters-ness of it all this time.

“Would kindness toward others hurt you physically?” “Mentally for sure, and we all know how important mental health is.”
“Gabriel? I think there’s an issue. The issue is that the door is locked, and I’m outside of it. Do you see my issue?” “Oh, my bad. I thought you were going home.” “I would never. I’d live in your closet if you permitted it.” “And you wonder why I locked the door,” I say.
My hands tighten on the steering wheel, and I can tell Liam’s starting to draw back. He thinks he’s said something that’s upset me. The man is so goddamn confident until it comes to me, and then it’s like a simple look or word from me can make him crash. It’s probably not healthy, but I don’t know what the fuck to do about it.
“Liam, it’s okay to show care for people in other ways,” he says. “Just because you don’t hurt when others do doesn’t mean you don’t care.”
While I read this in one sitting, the first book was better. This had too many flashbacks to Liam’s past and was a lot more OTT with the humor. The last book was the perfect blend, this one was a little too much.
This did end on a HFN so I am looking forward to what is in store for these two in the next book!
Alternate universe Leland/Felix and Jackson/Lane and whichever names from the vampire series are adorable. The first book in this series was actually a bit toned down and a bit darker than Alice Winters’ usual books but I did enjoy it. This one her medium humour is back and I do thoroughly enjoy that which is why I am always back for more.
I enjoyed the case too, even though I was kinda confused at times especially when two cases merged and I was struggling to keep track of things.
A Forgotten Mistake is the second book in Alice Winters’ Deadly Mistakes series and picks back up soon after A Simple Mistake. Gabriel and Liam are happily together, though while Liam is itching to move in together, Gabriel still wants to take it a little slower. But it is obvious that Gabriel has strong feelings for Liam and is in love and wants to keep him safe. This story has the same playfulness and humor between the men as the first, with Liam adoring of everything Gabriel does, and Gabriel fondly indulgent of his boyfriend’s quirks and prickly personality. I found the balance here a little better than in the first book, where Liam is so intensely obsessed with Gabriel without a clear sense of what it is about him that has Liam so drawn in. But here, while Liam continues to be besotted, Gabriel is also head over heels, so there is more of a balance between them that made the dynamic work a little better for me.
Overall, I am finding this series really hits a sweet spot for me with Winters’ books. It has her trademark humor and suspense, but also a little bit more of an edge that is working for me a lot. I am really looking forward to more.
I liked this one a little better than the first in the series.
Liam continues to be the star of the show, he's absolutely ridiculous and so freaking funny, and I thought the villain was a really cool addition to this one.
It’s so nice to be back with Gabriel and Liam who is once again up to his usual shenanigans with his coworkers. The shenanigans begin immediately so I was laughing from the first page and continued to do so throughout the remainder of this entertaining and engaging book. There’s also the complete joy in watching Liam interacting with people and coming to the realisation that he has friends and his reaction to that moment. To balance out the humour there’s an intriguing and intricate case to be solved. A case that has a very solid connection to Liam’s past with some unexpected surprises along the way. Once again Liam’s insights combined with the entire team’s solid investigative techniques bring the case to a successful close. Whilst all this is going on Liam is doing his utmost to encourage Gabriel to live with him so an over the top first month anniversary present is of course necessary as is a visit to a cat cafe with unexpected results. Their relationship is as strong as ever and Liam not only survived “meeting the parents” but became a family member whether he wanted to or not. This is a fantastic example of this talented author’s work and to enhance the reading experience you really should read the first book in the series as it provides much needed background information.
Just when I thought I couldn't love Liam and Gabriel more, this books comes out and I do. I love them so much! There's way less Lucille in this one but when she appears she is the grumpiest and most evil cat ever and I just feel her rage. Just go slap everyone, good job being evil! Liam unwillingly making friends, Liam getting the most absurd one monthaversary present to Gabriel. The freaking diner! Meeting the parents! All of the hilarity during an ongoing murder investigation, or more than one because detectives don't do one case at a time, they'll never finish solving them if they didn't multitask. And Liam is amazing at his job, master multitasker and master in annoying all his coworkers. Yet they get attached to him, much to his annoyance. I love everything and everyone in that department. I can't wait to read the bonus story of two side characters who were very on page in this book, with one of them having a very peculiar pet he loves. The murder mystery kept me guessing and I was there with them pointing fingers, failing spectacularly. I tried my best, Liam would insult me so much and I'll thank him for it.
This was a delight, perfect murder mystery with detective partners at work and in private, cats, a man who would actually burn the world for the one he loves. Trust me, he'll do it.
I didn’t expect to care this much about a murderer, but Liam made it impossible not to. He’s funny in the most broken, sideways way—like someone who never learned how to be soft, so he loves through threat-laced jokes and fierce, unwavering loyalty. I adored him. He doesn’t just tug at your heart; he takes it and stashes it in one of his carefully labelled folders of “things worth protecting.”
Gabriel, in contrast, is the golden retriever—the warmth, the steadiness—but I think I loved Liam more because he needed me more. His inability to understand emotions, his rigid code of morality that only makes sense in his head, the way he slowly learns to care about people… it made me ache for him. And then laugh out loud when he’d say things like whispering threats to a cat because they’re both foster kids. It’s so wrong, but it’s also so Liam.
The humour in these books is unexpected and sharp—like emotional relief in the middle of a storm. But what stayed with me most was the loyalty. The way Liam quietly collects people, not because he wants to, but because once someone gets under his skin, they’re his. It’s protective and brutal and beautiful.
Not just Gabriel, but also Matthew and Jesse—each one adding something vital to the strange, makeshift family he never asked for.
Matthew is dry, chaotic, and weirdly loyal—he threatens and comforts with the same energy. He’s the kind of friend who’ll roast you while rolling you away from danger in a wheely chair, and somehow that makes him perfect for someone like Liam. Jesse, on the other hand, is pure sunshine and chaos, armed with glitter and tarantulas and zero filter. He cuts through Liam’s cold logic with an easy warmth that Liam pretends to hate, but clearly keeps around on purpose.
Neither of them tries to “fix” Liam—they just exist in his orbit, unbothered by his threats, sharp edges, or the walls he builds. And slowly, those walls start to crack. It’s not a grand redemption arc. It’s quieter, more real. It’s the way Jesse tapes Liam’s ridiculous art to the wall like it matters, or the way Matthew gossips and protects in the same breath. It’s Liam making space in his life for people who see him, even if he doesn’t quite know how to show that he sees them back.
In the end, Liam isn’t softened by Gabriel alone. He’s surrounded—by Jesse, by Matthew, by unexpected warmth—and instead of running, he lets himself stay. That’s what makes his arc so satisfying. That’s why I love him.
This series reminded me of why I love morally grey characters who aren’t actually grey at all—they’re just operating on a different frequency. And characters like Gabriel, who see through that chaos and still choose to stay.
And the in-character acknowledgements? I’m obsessed. They’re like literary bloopers—letting the characters exist a little longer after the story ends. I wish more authors did that.
Highly recommended. A must read for lovers of this trope, author and amazing series.
Rating: 4.75🌈
The past comes rushing back for Homicide Det Liam Paige, the murderous psychopath who’s one delicious side of this two POV narrative in A Forgotten Mistake, the second story in the Deadly Mistakes series from Alice Winters.
The other voice belongs to cat loving Detective Gabriel Hyde, partner , voice of reason and stability, as well as the beloved of the hilariously acerbic Liam.
Winters uses the cases and investigations here to further the inter-departmental relationships Liam is reluctantly building with various team members he’s established barriers with previously and to reaffirm his commitment to the other romantic relationship he’s made with Gabriel. It’s a layered story, shockingly emotional and compellingly told.
Many details about Liam’s past life become hugely relevant to the cases and storylines here, impacting the investigations but Liam’s mental and emotional state. And that of Gabriel’s.
While there’s deeply disturbing and shocking elements in the scenes and storylines, there’s an equal amount of genuine hilarious moments. Gabriel, his cat,Lucille Pawl helps , in spectacular fashion, a new family member get added.
A Forgotten Mistake (Deadly Mistakes #2) by Alice Winters is a fantastic book. The author creates a compelling narrative that allows for the characters to explore their relationships and deepen their friendships, or in Liam’s case, actually start to develop some. Their characters show genuine growth through dramatic, tragic moments but we still have the comedy to lighten the load.
Highly recommended. A must read for lovers of this trope, author and amazing series.
Deadly Mistakes: - [x] A Simple Mistake #1 - [x] A Forgotten Mistake #2
Alice Winters gives us more story about Liam and Gabriel in this second Deadly Mistakes book and it’s great. Ms Winters again does a great job of making Liam sympathetic without just giving lots of excuses for his behavior. He does only unalive people who are bad themselves, but he still enjoys it and in a way needs it. She perfectly writes that fine line that makes him such an interesting character without excusing what he does. He also never becomes a caricature. Gabriel is not as interesting, but I don’t think that is a fault as we all need a side kick or foil and Gabriel does that well. I must say that Gabriel does become a bit more interesting in this book as we learn more about him. You can really feel how much they are changing each other for the better and they are a delight to read about. One of my favorite bit is when Gabriel and Liam are hugging in the shower and Liam thinks “I can forget about everything when I’m like this. I can just close my eyes and feel at peace for the first time in a very long while”. Isn’t that what we all need?
Oh how I loved being back with Liam and Gabriel again! I adored book 1 and loved this book just as much. We jump right back into their world, one where Liam absolutely adores Gabriel and Gabriel loves Liam and has accepted his slightly altered morale compass. I am such a fan of this author's writing and the way humor, love, mystery, and suspense are all woven together expertly to make such an enjoyable reading experience. As usual, this book had me guessing the entire time and the suspense was high, making it such an exciting read. The mystery here involves people and events from Liam's past so we get to learn a whole lot more about him. There were multiple cases going on at once that eventually all came together in the end. Great plot, well developed characters, the perfect amount of humor, and a who done it that kept me flipping pages so fast! Highly recommended!
I was first introduced to this series when I saw Alice post about the release of “A forgotten mistake” in her newsletter. I promptly went to search for book 1 and devoured it in one night! In other words I was HOOKED.
What an interesting, fun, and chilling series! A killer is always evil right? Wrong! Liam kills the nasty people. Murderers, abusers, etc. I absolutely love his character and how complex he is yet it’s easy to understand his motives. And what I love most is how dedicated he is to Gabriel’s happiness.
In this book Liam’s past catches up to him as he starts to plan for the future with Gabriel (even though its been one month literally) the ensemble cast are hilarious and full of life! Liam and Gabriel’s chemistry and growing trust in each other is amazing to read and lucy fur is still evil. I love, loved this book andcant wait for more (liam and jesse spin off when?) 5 stars!

Review for the audio: First: The audio was narrated by the extremely talented Greg Boudreaux and I loved listening to his voices for Liam/Gabriel. I really liked the first book but the second couldn't compete. The humor and banter are spot on and the romance developed somehow accordingly but I felt on the fence about Gabriel's involvement in *ahem* Liams extracurricular activities? The overlapping cases were a little hard to follow but that may be a audio problem. I'm not sure I've I would listen to a 3rd installment....
This is second book of deadly mistake, we learn more about Liam’s past and how he started and we meets many of the people of his and we get to see his past.
I love Gabriel supports Liam in his ways and understanding he needs to do his thing and let’s Liam do it.
I hope this isn’t a last book in this series and it’s a continuation like her other books I would like to keep on reading about them.
This author is my all time favorite for a reason!!!
Gah! How are all Alice Winters books just so darned good?!? They absolutely pull you in to the story so that you just can’t put it down until you’ve finished. This one was no exception. Liam is just so smart and really blows your mind with the combination of his intuition and his intellect. Gabriel is such a wonderful foil for his rough edges. And the cats just make me smile as they remind me of my own fur babies lol. Overall, this was an excellent book from one of my very few autobuy authors.
The first in this series gave me hope that Alice had moved away from Leland, but the first section of this book plunged me right back into his character. Thankfully she finally dropped that and the original character of Liam (did not help that the character's names echo in sound) started to push through again, but damage done.
4.5⭐️ - this is plenty demented with Liam’s proclivity and all but it’s also terribly sweet between him and Gabriel. I really enjoyed the mystery in this one. And banter and shenanigans among the detectives is just so fun and ridiculous. I love the at Alice balances humor, flawed characters, romance and mystery. It’s never dull, always a little weird and so fun to read.
And Alice did it again! This second book was just as good as the first one. I laughed out loud en loved Liam and Gabriel even more and the end of this one! And that story was just perfect and fun.. again! I kinda need more.. pretty please?
I have opinions. I promise I’ll come back and add my thoughts. This month is just kicking my butt. But u have lots to say, so come back in a couple weeks if you wanna know, lol.
I had fun with this one as well. These are not easy characters and situations to follow up on. Overall, I’d say this is the style of writing that is an acquired taste for some. Luckily for me it was spot on. So, kudos.
