Deep Web: Die dunkle Seite des Internets

Rate this book

* They are officially published under that name
* They are traditional stories not attributed to a specific author
* They are religious texts not generally attributed to a specific author

The low rating on GoodReads is undeserved (and partly driven by obvious edgelords): This is a solid introduction into the world of the Tor server, its criminal niches, the ambiguity of anonymity as a hiding place, and the attempts of official institutions to regulate the deep web. The anonymous author is apparently a member of the collective of the same name (which I believe, because the German publisher tasked him to write the book, and it's a reputable publisher), and as a classic narrative reportage, he takes readers along on his journey into the trenches of Silk Road and Hidden Wiki. There a short interview bits and detours, there is some research about whistle blowers, politicians, and law enforcement agencies - but most of all, this wants to raise awareness while being highly readble. Which it is.

And sure, one might dive deeper, but this is not a scientific text, so please adjust your expectations accordingly. And sure, one might say that this is also a roadmap for newbies to even access the dark web, but come on, if someone really wants to do that, they will - there is a reason why the deep web is 400 times the size of the regular internet. (The author stresses that this will indeed make you suspicious to law enforcement, even before they know what you actually do there.) And yes, I was also annoyed that Anonymous decided to frame this with Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland / Through the Looking-Glass, because it's way too obvious, unneccessary and clumsily executed.

Still, I enjoyed reading this, and I learnt quite a bit.

The book itself is mostly separated into 2 parts:
- Exploring the actual Deep Web, how it works and people surrounding it
- Taking with politically active people, talking about moral standpoint when it comes to Deep Web and data surveillance.

The book is... not great. The first part was solid, learning how Tor and everything related to Tor. Managed to learn some stuff I didn't know before, so I rly enjoyed that part.
2nd part on the other hand is god awful. I understand discovering everything about Deep Web should involve talking with people who publicly talk about Tor network, but this just feels like reading a set of half baked interviews, asking the person only 2-3 questions at most, and then moving on to other people. I don't remember a single person mentioned in 2nd part of the book and I mostly forgot what their stance was, and I feel like there was nothing new to learn from those interviews. Their introduction was almost non existent, and having a new person to interview every 10-15 pages helps you mix them up easily.

But easily the worst part of the book has to be the constant references to "Alice in Wonderland" which was more annoying than anything. I didn't give a single fuck about what Alice would think about distribution of CP and data surveillance. It was annoying, if you never read or saw Alice in Wonderland, or if you just forgot what it was about, it's gonna be a nuisance reading the book. I wouldn't recommend it, most of what I learned from the book could be easily shortened into 2-3 articles or Youtube videos.

as a starting point for further research, it's ok, as it provides some basic terms and info. but it lacks any deeper involvement with the subject. stylistically it's a disaster, with constant boring parallels with Alice in the Wonderland, utterly obsolete and distracting. if you leave that out, what you get is a slightly longer newspaper article for a Sunday morning reading. actually, well chosen topic, but a disappointing book.
