The law is remarry or lose the throne. But it says nothing about love.
My husband is dead, and I’m the prime suspect. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the law requires I marry by the end of the season, or I lose my kingdom.
I followed my heart the first time; I won’t do it again.
The old tournament tradition could help me select our next king while protecting my broken heart, but I never expected a close friend of my husband’s family to show up to compete.
I don’t know if he believes the rumors and suspects me of murder, but it’s clear someone wants him out of the competition and me off the throne.
Caught in a tangled web of political games and deadly secrets, I must choose between following my wounded heart and keeping my crown…before more end up dead.
Once the Skies Fade is the second in a fantasy romance collection of interconnected stand-alones set in a magical war-torn world, where secrets have power and allies are few. This tale of love lost and fated mates brings a morally grey queen with shadowy secrets and the sarcastic general who could mend her heart…if he doesn’t put a dagger in it first.

What to Expect: ➼ Morally Gray FMC ➼ Queen w/Shadow Magic ➼ Deadly Tournament ➼ Fated Mates ➼ Political Intrigue ➼ Touch Him & Die ➼ Interconnected Standalone ➼ Dual Narration ➼ Dual First Person POV
For some reason I thought this book was going to follow the original couple from the previous book. I had honestly been looking forward to reading about them, so I had to pivot my expectations a bit when I first started reading. There was also a pretty major event that I had forgotten that lead to the FMC’s circumstances at the beginning of this book. Once I played catchup and reset my expectations though, I did enjoy this one!
There is some role reversal on a few popular tropes that made this book stand out. We get a morally gray FMC and some strong Touch Him & Die vibes. At times, her gray was looking a little too black to me if I’m honest. She murders a lot of people and the reason she did so never made much sense to me. This is probably my biggest criticism of the book, but once I set that aside there was a lot I did like.
The MMC played the role of the valiant hero well. He originally comes into her sphere to uncover the truth about his friend’s death that he believes she may have caused which was a very honorable choice and this pretty much sums up his character. He’s also very playful with her as the story progresses which brought out a different side of her and made her more and more likable. I don’t see a lot of people talking about this book or this series, but I definitely think they’re worth the read!

Pre-read: Taking a break from my other two current reads to prioritize the library books I’ll need to return soon! I’ll be headed home this weekend which means I won’t be getting a lot of reading done so I have less time to read some of my books than I thought. 🙃
I loved every second of this gorgeous book!! I read the first book, Until The Stars Fall in january as my first read of the year and really enjoyed it so i was super excited to hear that this book was coming out soon! These books can be read as standalones but they are interconnected! I think i loved this book more than the first one! I loved Mathias and his witty quips and snarky comebacks he had, they made me laugh so much. ALSO Calla being a shadow mommy??? I loved every second of it! This book really depicted grief perfectly and really expressed the emotions you can go through when going through a loss. The trials and competitions were perfect and i found them SO intriguing and fun to read. I was absolutely HOOKED by the first chapter in this stunning book! So so so so good!
Thank you to Vanessa Rasanen, Crab Apple Books and NetGalley for the gifted copy and the opportunity to review this book.
Once the Skies Fade (Immortal Reveries #2) by Vanessa Rasanen
The law is clear: remarry or lose the throne. But it says nothing about love.
Rating: **** Feels: Amusement, Shock, Anticipation, Heat Style: Fantasy, Romantasy, Magic, Fae, Fantasy Romance First published March 14, 2025: 642 pages, Kindle / Audio Book
I adored Matthias in book one so was pleased we got to see more of him, so so much more and wow. He did not disappoint. Calla, wow girl. She brought her game and found myself a new shadow mommy. If you thought you loved shadow daddies wait until you meet Calla and see what she can do *swoons*. Oh wait yes back to Matthias, who did not want any of this but because he is the kind of guy he is he just wins us all over. The reluctant hero is a storyline I so love and then combine it with a deadly, hurting (while we are kinda hurting to be honest) shadow QUEEN !! well this was just one recipe I loved. This author really knows how to tell a story.
Audiobook Review: Zura Johnson (narrator), Shane East(narrator) : So this is the first audiobook I have listened to with these narrators and wow. They have climbed up my list. They bring the perfect amount of emotion, depth and tone to each situation and I was transported. I have read on kindle and now listened to the audio and the prologue was delivered with so much humor I was giggling even though I knew what happened already. I was easily able to tell who was speaking in the story at throughout. The flow of the story was seamless and I was able to follow along at different speeds without difficulty. My typically listening speed is between 1.5 - 2.0 and I listened to this at 1.75. The pauses, shifts and way they both narrate really add to the story in a way that brought the story and style of the writing to life. This was literally such a perfect pairing of author to narrator. This would be an equally pleasant read or audiobook listen, for me I think I actually preferred this as an audiobook with just how well it was done.
This book has: Shadow Mommy (YES !!!) Enemies to Lovers Marriage Trials Touch her/him and die Fae Courts Fae vrs Humans Politics Magic
Thank you so much to Vanessa Rasanen, NetGalley, Dreamscape Media and Crab Apple Books. All thoughts are my own.
The idea of the story was good. However, I really wanted to DNF this book several times.
First of all the narrators were not doing very good job. I disliked the FMC because of this. Actually I didn't like her because of a lot of things but this was the major one. I mean she was too collected to be the morally grey character and shadow mummy that I am seeing in the reviews. Constantly pitting herself, constantly doubting herself... oh, get a hold of yourself woman!
It was too long... I mean 15 hours for this was too much. There were so unnecessary inner thoughts and description that could have been avoided. And in the same time I can't tell nothing of the world or the characters. I have no clue how they should look like.
The trials were ok. They were written well and were a breath of fresh air.
I couldn't understand what was exactly the magic system - ok she had the shadows but what else? And they were talking more like a curse than a magic... In general, I couldn't see much of the fantasy here. Where are the rest of the abilities, the rest of the magic...?
There are a lot of plot holes. Example of this why all those people were murdered - what was the reason of loosing her family. Why she was killing humans in such a rage? (didn't her friends were half humans?) And she was supposed to know who killed her husband... why didn't she tell Matthias when they were in that dream? And those dreams... and the mate bond... too many things that they were supposed to know or there are only few couples in the whole world who only experienced the mate bond?
And please, oh please stop putting dragons only to write that there are dragons in the books when they make no difference if they are there or not.
What was the need in the end of the book to be presented with totally new characters and species? Why prolonging the end? It didn't make it more interesting for sure.
I don't know, in general there is potential but I can't tell that I am impressed. Maybe people really liked it but this was not for me.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Eng:
I liked this one more than the previous book!! ✨ It is not necessary to read the previous book to understand this one, in fact, there is a summary here, in the same way the previous book is also good and I recommend it!!🙈 You can read it and thus get to know the characters better (and the world).🙂↕️✨
I love how light Vanessa's books are; they're quick to read, and I like that they don't have complicated plots. If you've read a heavy book and want to read a light fantasy, this is your book! 🛐💕(It's also very entertaining!)
I'm totally in love with Matthias😮💨, he's flirtatious and shameless, I LOVE him haha and Calla is a queen✨, I love the dynamic they have together!!💕(The bathtub scene? My favorite🫦 (And at the beginning of the story…..and what happens next.. Omg, I didn't expect that haha!)
Okay, but Asher? You know I'm obsessed with dragons, but a dragon shifter? 🥵My weakness, I'm totally in love with him, I need his story!😍
I won't say much to get you to read this book, highly recommended!👀
This was such an excellent, enjoyable read! I loved Matthias' character from the moment we met him in Until The Stars Fall, and throughout this book he just cemented his place as one of my all time favourite MMCs!
Once the Skies Fade is a grittier, darker story compared to book one in the Immortal Reveries series, but it still maintains that twisted fairytale vibe. After the sudden death of her husband, mere months after her parents tragic deaths, Queen Calla is struggling with her misunderstood shadow magic, and balancing her responsibilities as ruler with her fresh grief. When her council insists she must choose a new husband within weeks of her husband's funeral, she decides to take her heart out of the equation altogether, and hold a series of deadly trials to determine which male is best suited to rule alongside her.
Calla is not your typical damsel in distress, she she exercises her authority as queen with a fierceness that brings her some pushback from her council of advisors. I loved this aspect of Calla's personality, she was harsh at times, but she owned her choices and did not allow herself to be cowed or pushed around. There will no doubt be people who would view Calla almost as a villain, but if she was a male, I don't believe she would be judged so harshly. Calla tries to be strong, and to be stoic to do what's right for her people, she doesn't want to allow her emotions to cloud her judgement, and this sometimes means her anger gets the better of her.
The growth of both Calla and Matthias in this story was excellent, both of them stubborn and learning to open up and care for each other. There was almost a gender role reversal in their story, with Calla becoming the more dominant one and Matthias bending to her will, he even ends up being the one needing the rescuing on more than one occasion!
If you want a fairytale-esque story of fated mates, political intrigue, backstabbing and plotting, this is an excellent book to pick up!
I also have to praise the narrators who were perfectly cast! Zura and Shane did an incredible job and brought the characters to life so incredibly. I would listen to this audiobook over and over.
***02/26/25 Adding audiobook review*** I received an ALC via the author and NetGalley and I’m so freaking glad I did. I was planning to buy a copy of the audiobook at least since I love, love, loved reading the ebook and knew Zura Johnson and Shane East were narrating the audiobook. Y’all, the narration is perfection. The book opens with a letter to the reader from the male main character and hearing Shane East read that letter will make your entire year. The story is fantastic and the audiobook is a must read.
*original ebook review on 01/05/25* I absolutely LOVED this book. Once the Skies Fade was a book I was highly anticipating since I loved Until the Stars Fall (Book 1 of the Immortal Reveries series) so much. The books can be read as standalone but are interconnected, which is my favorite because I don't have to remember every little detail of a previous book to be able to read and love the next book. But you still get the excitement from seeing characters that you love.
So speaking of characters I know and love from Book 1, Conner and Lieke! I felt like I got enough time to see them again to scratch that itch from UTSF but without them taking away from Matthias and Calla's story. Matthias and Calla.....oh my oh my!
Who doesn't love a snarky MMC but more importantly who doesn't love it when the morally grey shadow wielder is the FMC! These 2 might steal the top spot as my fav Immortal Reveries couple.
I really like the trial/competition aspect that took place in this book and how the story line unfolded. I also really liked getting more details about the world, magic and politics of the Kingdoms. UTSF focused on humans and fae but we got more information about other "beings" (shhh no spoilers here). Love seeing the world expand in each book and cannot wait for the next one especially with who I think the MMC will be in book 3!
*I received an ARC ebook but I will absolutely be purchasing a physical copy and the audiobook when they are released.
So freaking good!! Once the Skies Fade is an incredible tale of love land loss, and the power of finding the strength to go one and let love in again. I was honored to beta read this book, and I have reread it since and it still hits just as hard. Calla's emotional journey was tough to read at times, but I was so amazed at her strength and resilience. Matthias hides his emotions behind a wall of irreverence and humor, but he is also a character that feels deeply and loves wholly. Seeing their romantic journey and character development together was just beautifully done. The backdrop of the trials kept things exciting and moved the plot forward at a fast clip. I loved that this was a standalone fantasy romance in a series of interconnected stories, so we see some old friends and meet some new and interesting characters as well. I love this book and world so much, and I cannot wait for the next installment.
Thank you so much to Vanessa Rasanen for allowing me to beta and ARC read this beautiful book!! I absolutely loved it!!!
Thank you to Vanessa Rasanen and Dreamscape media for an advanced copy of this book for an honest review. I had the opportunity to listen to the audio version and it did not disappoint! The narrators did a wonderful job. There were two- one for each of the two main characters in the book.
I appreciated the little recap at the beginning. It was nice to have a little review of what happened in the previous book, especially as someone who did not read it. That being said, I don't think you have to read book 1 to enjoy this one, but I am certainly interested now.
The book started off a bit slow. At first I thought it was going to be a villain origin story, which I would have totally been here for, but it picked up about 30-ish percent in when the competition began. The chemistry between the characters was definitely there and the action/adventure and mystery aspects of the story were also very compelling.
Oh my gosh this was everything I could have ever wanted! I got to arc read for this book and man it is gut wrenching and beautiful! The story of these two is great. And having a shadowmommy is amazing!! Love these two characters!!
This was a fun, fast-paced, fantasy romance that I really enjoyed! There were intense trials, political games, witty banter, emotional rollercoasters, and tension filled romance that I couldn’t get enough of!
This dual POV follows Calla, the recently widowed, morally grey shadow queen, and Matthias, the witty and sarcastic general from the neighboring kingdom. When the law forces Calla to remarry or lose her crown, we're taken on an adventure through intense and tortuous trials designed to find the next king.
By the end, I loved the emotional development of both main characters and found myself wanting there to be even more growth between Calla and Matthias (the main reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5!). While Matthias also experienced grief and understood Calla's feelings, I felt that some of Calla's actions were only lightly explained or quickly overlooked.
Once the Skies Fade is the second in an interconnected series of stand-alone fantasy romance books. While these books are considered standalone (and you could still follow the story of this book without reading the first), I would recommend reading the first book to fully appreciate the overarching story and feel immediately immersed in the world.
Overall, I would recommend this book and loved so many things - the darker fantasy vibes, the witty and sarcastic banter, a morally grey FMC, and the dual POV that allowed the reader to see the individual personalities and struggles of both the FMC and MMC.
Thank you to Vanessa Rasanen, Crab Apple Books, and NetGalley for the advanced copy and the opportunity to review this book.
Thank you netgalley, the publisher, and author for giving me a copy of this book to read and review. All thoughts are my own!
I am obsessed with deadly trials in my fantasy books, so I just knew I would devour this. I loved the characters, i loved the plot, the twist…I didn’t see coming, and I adored the romance. Also, having a strong female lead was refreshing. I don’t think there was anything I disliked about this book. I truly could not put it down once I started it. Matthias had me hooked from the first chapter. I love him so dang much.
I will definitely be picking up more books by this author.
THIS BOOK!!! I was hooked from the start and could not wait to find out what happened next. From the pining to the secrecy to the shadow mama, I devoured this and I will always want more.
Thank you to the author for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book was AMAZING! A morally grey FMC who knows how to use her shadows, a sarcastic and witty MMC, deadly competitions, plot twists you will not see coming, banter, spice, and so much emotion! I was on the edge of my seat during several scenes and I could not stop turning those pages fast enough!
Our FMC, Calla, has endured so much and your heart will break for her. The portrayal of grief and the conflicting emotions of moving on afterward were portrayed so well. Matthias has officially won the award for making me laugh out loud repeatedly with his quick wit and flirtatious comments! There were several other characters that brought out the humor with some amazing one-liners as well. Also, the nickname in this one is hands down one of my favorites!! Vanessa did an incredible job writing all of her characters with so much depth that you will have some instant favorites! There was even one character that will remain nameless because I despise them and the fact that Vanessa could make me have this much hate for one character is incredible! I have never wanted a character to just poof out of existence so much!!
The romance developed beautifully. There were “I’ve got you” and “who did this” moments and a bathtub scene! 🙌 I was swooning and giddy with excitement multiple times and the spice was perfection!!
“I’ll take your hate. I’ll take anything you’re willing to give me. And if hate is all you can offer, I’ll take it a million times over, because an eternity of your hate is better than a lifetime without you.”
This was perfectly wrapped up in an HEA that had me sobbing because of all the emotions! I’m so excited to see how the overarching plot will continue in the next book with the hints we were given at the end. And I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a certain dragon mercenary to come into play in a future book!
***
Re-read with the audiobook and it was just as amazing!! The narrators did an incredible job! I highly recommend this one in whichever format works best for you!!
Another great read from Vanessa! After reading Until the Stars Fall I was so excited for this next installment.
I’m loving this trend of interconnected fantasy stand alones. And this one truly stands alone. There’s even an included “summary” at the start. This book gets added seamlessly where the fast finished. I loved the trials and Mathias and Callas chemistry.
The action scenes were so packed full. The political scheming and intrigue wasn’t too complicated to follow. The plot was fast paced and kept me hooked. Our poor Calla, the grief and heavy emotions she has to keep under control all the time made me feel so sad for her.
Vanessa has an amazing way of giving us swoony tension to make such an addictive slow burn. And once these two came together 🥵 took us a while but we get there. The banter between these two was fantastic as well. Mathias is dreamy.
Our audio narration was also spot on. Both of these narrators do a fantastic job with Calla and Mathias. Sometimes with dual narration you have one narrator who doesn’t do a great opposite gender voice…that’s not the case here. They were fantastic!
Thank you to the author for the e-arc and Dreamscape media for the ALC.
I love their story 😭. Also, having the MMC explaining a recap of the first book made me so happy. Part of my heart healed reading this book after absolutely destroying me. I love it so much!
So good to be back in Vanessa’s world, to meet a delightfully new couple, and to even get to see old friends!
OSF is a stand-alone within an interconnected series with an overarching plot. In this second installment, we follow the dual first person POVs of our grumpy x sunshine MCs. Grieving the loss of her parents and husband, Calla is forced to host a series of marriage trials to keep hold of her throne while seeking the murderer behind her husband’s death. In light of rumors that Calla murdered her husband, Matthias is ordered by his king to participate in the marriage trials in hopes to discover if the rumors are true since the murder affected him personally. With death on the line and political corruption oozing abundantly, Matthias must get close to Calla and, in turn, Calla fights to control her hidden powers and feelings.
This lovely story first begins with grief dotted with spots of humor from our MMC in a cozy way but soon blossoms into a darker Romantasy with betrayals, torture, and increased stakes. I truly enjoyed Matthias’ sense of humor so much!
Tropes you may find in OSF are marriage trials, shadow mommy, golden retriever MMC, “who did this to you?”, she washes him, medium spice (there’s a spice rack in the back for chapters you can skip if wanted), fated mates, political intrigue, grumpy x sunshine, she saves him, betrayals, dragon shifters, and an ending that provides full closure but also gives us excitement for the next story Vanessa plans to give us. OSF releases March 14; Until Stars Fall (book one and also a standalone) is out now and on KU!
Thank you, Vanessa, for this gifted arc. It was such a pleasure!
In short Calla is a newly windowed queen in need of a king, as per their kingdoms laws, in order to keep her rule. She sets up a trial to find her next husband and king. This is where Matthias enters. He is the general to the neighboring kingdom, entering the trial to gain better access to what really may have happened to the late king.
I think what’s difficult about a fantasy romance standalone is that the ending is fairly predictable. I think Vanessa did an overall good job in adding some twists along the way but even the twist I do feel like you could see coming, particular the betrayal near the end. I ended up giving this book a 4/5 despite this though because my general feels when I was reading was that I just needing to keep going! I was hooked and completely invested in the characters and their ultimate happiness.
I am definitely a fan of Matthias. I love his sarcastic nature and the banter he brings to the budding relationship with Queen Calla. He’s definitely a kind soul and I loved watching this shine through in the trials.
Calla is a hard character to like. I feel she had some unredeemable situations in this book and Matthias was all too quick to glaze it over. I feel like Callas reaction to the situation was very out of proportion and the reasoning that was given wasn’t very compelling. Then there is Isla. I love that she is this strong female general and advisor to the queen but she also had such blind loyalty and wasn’t doing ginger friend any favors letting her “rage” like she did.
I did really enjoy the trials aspect in the book. I feel like it did really hold things together and kept the flow going.
Where to start! I need the next book ASAP! This one is going to cause a massive book hangover, I can just feel it! First thing’s first, the characters are top notch, both protagonists and antagonists. Matthias is swoon worthy, funny, witty, brave, kind, just serious enough that he’s believable, and always with a quick quip to further endear him to the reader (and piss off his enemies). Calla’s journey of grief is a heartbreaking road to traverse with her, but one that is so worth it; Vanessa has crafted the most beautiful tale of loss, suffering, and redemption in this character arc. Grief impacts everyone differently, and V has shown that beautifully in this book. There’s an uneasy atmosphere throughout the entire book, even before the tournament begins, and it makes it so difficult to trust anyone. Even as more mysteries are uncovered the air of unease continues right up to the climax, and whenever I had to set the book down I couldn’t stop thinking about it, pondering where the plot might go next, who the mastermind was behind everything, and who was going to meet an untimely end next. The relationships, both romantic and platonic, were top notch as always with V’s books. The friendships are full of love and understanding for each other, even if the parties involved cannot always completely know what the others are going through. And finally, the action, the intrigue, it all had me on the edge of my seat. I was messaging V throughout, in varying states of all block caps, and even a few voice notes like ‘YOU DID NOT JUST …’ . So, overall? I think my rating says it all. Another stellar Rasanen romantasy, and I cannot wait for the next!
Of note: This is book #2 in the series. A synopsis of book #1 is given in the beginning, but I did NOT read book #1, and did fine reading this one alone. But, I will probably go back and read it at some point! 😉
So in this book we open up with Calla and Brennan, the newlyweds…smitten and in love…. Unfortunately that doesn’t last long, as Brennan DIES right in front of her. And there’s nothing she can do to help him! 🫣 ***This is the opening of the book, and noted in the promos, so I’m not giving anything away… ***
Calla is the Queen, and unfortunately, she is now being tasked with finding a new husband in a very short amount of time. She has no interest in doing this, but if she doesn’t want to lose her kingdom, she must.
So, she and her general (Isla? Not sure of the spelling…) go about trying to figure out how to narrow down the prospects…and the scene that follows? Well, I was cracking up!!😆🤣
Some scary stuff. Some horrible stuff. Some sweet stuff. And some horrific, blood-curdling, vomit-inducing stuff follow… But, I wouldn’t trade ANY of it, because it all makes this one… ONE TO REMEMBER!!
Oh…and did I mention…Fae and Dragons and Shape-Shifting, and… hidden powers??? It all adds up to a terrific book!!
I don’t believe I’ve read any of her books before, but I will be looking for more now!!
All the stars for me!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫💫💫💫💫✨✨✨✨✨ Brings out all the emotions, and then some!!

ARC read - 4/5⭐️ Once the Skies Fade is the second book in the Immortal Reveries series by Vanessa Rasanen. This book is an interconnected standalone. I received an advanced reader copy of the audiobook version. I loved the dual POV and the different narrators. Both narrators did a great job of capturing and keeping the reader/listeners attention and added an elevated listening experience to this book.
Once the Skies Fade portrays Queen Calla, whose husband recently dies and she is forced to remarry or give up her kingdom. At the trials to find her new husband, none other than Calla’s husband’s best friend shows up to compete. A morally grey FMC, a witty/sarcastic MMC, trials, shadow wielders, romance, fated mates…OBSESSED. I really felt for Calla, she was so misunderstood and forced to remarry after just losing her husband. But I loveddd that Calla was the shadow wielder, a shadow mommy if you will. The banter from Matthias was hilarious, he was so quick with his witty responses. The tension between Calla and Mathias had me in a chokehold 🥵 and the spice was giving what it needed to give 👩🏻🍳💋🌶️. This is a must read!! Can’t wait til this one comes out so I can purchase a physical copy.
Oh my GODS I truly loved everything about this book. Calla is seriously everything. I want more morally grey, perfectly FLAWED FMCs in our books.
Vanessa was able to put so much emotion into Calla's character, and I felt every ounce of it. I think the dynamic between her and Mathias was perfectly executed - her the morally grey, more serious character and he the golden retreiever type hero.
The pull between them was so apparent and beautifully written. Their chemistry was believable, and their banter was refreshing. I think every aspect of this story was flawless. The overarching plot was wonderfully crafted, and I was constantly guessing where the story was going to take us. That plot was balanced very well with the romance, and the pacing and flow made it so I did not want to stop reading.
Additonally - the audiobook narration was FANTASTIC. This will definitely be in the running for a top read of the year.
Thank you to Vanessa and netgalley for my early copy!
I could not read this book fast enough. For a 600+ page story, I wondered if it would be too long but it was the perfect length in my opinion with everything that goes down. Once The Skies Fade is action-packed, dark, funny, devastating, heartwarming, violent and so much more. I loved the banter between the characters, it was one of my favorite things. I enjoy a good dose of sarcasm. The way the tournament unfolds is a clever roller coaster of anxiety, surprise, sadness and elation - every chapter left me needing to immediately start the next one. The world-building is phenomenal and I could see it all so clearly in my head. There is a good mix of spice, too! This book has what you want in a dark fantasy - magic, morally grey characters, fated mates, royalty, secrets, betrayals and the list goes on. I haven't read book 1 of this series but now I think I definitely have to. Do not sleep on this story!! You'll love it as much as I did, it's pretty much a guarantee.
I wasn’t planning to read this after UTSF disappointed me, but I needed to know why Brennan had to die… so here we are. And honestly? This was so much better than book one—I actually really enjoyed it. The trials were foolproof, and I thought I’d hate Matthias since he was basically in the games for spying on Calla, but I ended up feeling the complete opposite.
This was everything UTSF wasn’t. I was absolutely hooked, and I’m so glad I gave it a chance. You know that feeling when you go into a book with zero expectations but end up wanting to give it a glowing review? That’s exactly what happened here. The satisfaction of rating a book 5 stars when you already expected it to be one is great, but rating it 5 stars when you expected it to be a zero? That’s an entirely different kind of win.
This was hilarious, “You make it sound like they eloped.”
This sequel dives deep into a world of political intrigue and magic. The characters are still amazing, and I loved seeing their growth. The mix of action and emotional moments kept me hooked, and the way the author builds on the world from the first book was impressive. Calla's journey through grief and duty is both heart-wrenching and empowering. And Matthias? His snark had me laughing out loud more times than I can count. The trials and competitions added an exciting layer to the story, keeping me hooked from start to finish. The romance had me swooning, but there was also enough tension and suspense to keep things interesting. So excited for the next book in the series!
ARC review: This is a 1 star book that I’m generously giving 3! Listing this book as Fantasy-romance is like reading a hockey-romance and expecting the book to be about hockey. There are fantasy “elements” but it is a disaster. Nothing makes sense, more plot holes than Swiss cheese and by the end; the author is throwing darts hoping anything sticks. Giving this book a very, very generous 3 stars - simply because I was entertained until I started wondering what in the f I was reading.
The read is fun, I will admit I was having a good time and invested. Till about 70%, when the story kept dragging, took some wild detours & I was learning literally f all about what the heck was going on.
We have our FMC, a shadow princess who’s lost her entire family in 6 months, doesn’t know why and then goes murderous to create more plot holes. Our FMC decides humans are the worst thing ever, but somehow totally doesn’t remember two of her childhood friends are half human? Or that like, she knows exactly who killed her husband, yet it’s totally logical to take it out on an entire species.
She also has magical powers that might be a curse, might not. Might have tangible properties, might also not. The authors not sure, so you shouldn’t be either.
Starting off with what the author does well: -I love the character banter. The responses, flow and conversation actually are written well and progressive. You feel engaged and I love how you can get a good feel for each personality.
-the trials! This is where Vanessa shined! Girl, you have so much potential. So much creativity, why wasn’t that brought into the rest of the book?
-the romance do be romancin. While there is minimal burn; I did feel connected to the Arc of the relationship
Let me ask the author a few questions: What colour hair does anyone have? How tall is anyone? How OLD is anyone? Does everyone in each area speak the same language? Since people do be travelling all over the world! We know some human kids are 25 but actually 6, like what? How the f does this work? Dragons? Cool is there fire or can they just fly? Cause fire would have solved a lot at the end. Who has magic, how does it work, what are these “common fae traits” BECAUSE NOTHING IS EVER EXPLAINED?!!! The author advertises “easy world building” there is no world building and it’s lazy.
It’s frustrating. Then at 80% of the way through the book the author throws in some nightwalkers that apparently every person in this world has known about but like hey! We’re just remembering this fact now. We also totally didn’t bother to go here EVER when we knew humans were killing everyone. I just threw my hands up at this point and said “okay we’ve lost the plot”.
Or the other issue that Matthias has dedicated YEARS to the fae killings but like drops everything for this tournament, then we hear nothing about it again until the end? Really?
I can go on and on but it just makes me more angry. This book is way too long to contain absolutely nothing. I really wish Vanessa explained her world, because like- I’m lost girl. So lost, this place makes no f**king sense.
Like how in book 1: “But you don’t know who they are until the bond is physically formed.” Liekes lips twisted comically. “Physically? So you have to sleep with them before you find out?” “Maybe for some, I suppose. Though I’ve never met any who didn’t at least kiss before doing that.”
IMPLYING that any form of physical will trigger the bond. then in book 2 they can have full on sex but no bond? The math ain’t mathing. Mostly also because the author, explains jack doo-doo. And there’s only 3 living mates in the entirety of the series, thus far. And no libraries apparently, so you should totally just go with the flow here. Frankly this is the vibe for the whole book, nothing makes sense and that’s okay. We here for vibes, not plots.
The letter in the beginning, is so YA coded. It set the mood as childish and reinforces this author loves to “tell not show” in writing, please have trust in your readers. There’s a reason “re caps” are not popular.
There is a lot of potential for this series. I had hopes the first book left holes as it was in a human POV and these loops would be closed. I wish the author would go back to the drawing board, actually write a book, prequel or something to do some world building. I do feel this author is simply trying to jump on a bandwagon and prefers romance writing.
A shadow MOMMY? The MAN has to be the one competing in trials for the queens heart? This was so fun and I really enjoyed it.
Until The Stars Fall and Once The Skies Fade are set in the same world and are interconnected standalones, but I think it makes it much more meaningful to read UTSF first because we get to see some of the same characters!
I listened to the audiobook and thought both narrators did a really good job.
Thank you to Dreamscape Media for an ALC in exchange for my honest review!
More like Once My Heart Beat Returns to Normal because Matthias and Calla have it RACING.
Once the Skies Fade, book 2 in the Immortal Reveries series, is a wonderful follow up to Until the Stars Fall.
If you've read book one, you'll find that the world expands to a neighboring kingdom and we see some familiar faces. However, this story is darker, riddled with shadows and mystery and death, and the heat and tension between our MCs certainly rise to the occasion.
I thought I'd prepared myself for a wild little fantasy ride, but I was swiftly blown away with the action, the simmering passion, and the secrets.
Calla is our morally grey shadow-wielding Queen. She's hurting, she's fierce, she's morally grey, and she's just a bit scary... but we love her. And Matthias... Mr. Orelian... The mouth and sass on this man is unmatched. I liked him a lot in book one, but in book two he stole my heart and ran away into the forest with it. I don't want it back.
Please pick this up if you're in the mood for: - an interconnected standalone series (I mean it, this CAN be read as a standalone AND it even includes a brief summary, a cheeky one at that, of book 1 in the beginning so you don't miss out on any key details) - a shadow mommy - best friendships worth k!lling for - a fantasy world that won't overwhelm you - short chapters, multi-POV, and a fast paced plot
**Thank you so much to Crab Apple Books and Vanessa Rasanen for a copy of Once the Skies Fade and the opportunity to leave my honest, voluntary review! All thoughts and opinions are my own <3**
I ate up the first book and this one kept up the pace. I love the banter and the ability to relate and feel for the FMC. I find her being the “shadow mommy” and broody absolutely amazing. The shadow skills 👏🏻👏🏻the she saves them trope and the ability to heal from the lose of previous love. The flow of the book is good and there is a sprinkle of mystery to it. The only issue so had was that I guessed the person that was behind it all. The ending was so sweet too. Definitely a good series to read.
