Syaoran and his traveling companions continue to hop, skip, and jump across dimensions—from a land of demon-hunters that hides a reality-shattering secret, to a world inhabited with furry creatures who are being terrorized by a living squall, and beyond—all in the name of restoring Sakura’s memories. This time, Syaoran, Sakura, and Mokona find themselves separated from Fai and Kurogane, divided between two camps in a conflict that reaches to the heavens. Will Syaoran be forced to stand against his friends in this bloody battle between deities?
CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
This volume definitely started out with a bang. It got darker and more chaotic than the previous volumes.
Overall the volume had a lot more action and some more emotional parts between Sakura and Syaoran.
I liked the slight insight we got into Fai with what Mokona said about him and the other two men always been somewhat sad about something. I like Fai's ability to project a happy, joyful demeanour all the time but it makes me sad to hear that deep down he is not really happy.
These volumes' story arcs feature demon hunting, virtual reality, a theme park, queer romance, and historical time travel, all of which are MY FAVORITE THINGS.
Once again, CLAMP continues to "wow" with their art and story line!
This is a tense few volumes! Very close calls and the first failure to gain a feather, as well as hints that someone is interfering with the journey. Though still slightly "episodic", the attention spent on each world is getting longer and the connection between Tsubasa and xxxholic a little more meaningful. The characters are starting to getting a sense of something "beyond" their current quest of finding Sakura's memories, and the reader is given a sense of "sinister foreboding" the longer they read! Our party experiences their first split, which, as any good Dungeon Master knows, is a recipe for impending doom! Things are definitely starting to heat up. Fai and Kurogane remain peripheral, but there are hints that they won't stay that way. Fai definitely has secrets, and they're on the verge of coming out! This Omnibus ends on a very intense scene that leaves the reader almost disappointed to need to jump back into xxxholic before getting the next Omnibus!
I continue to love the character development and the story. The psychology of suffering and how to deal with it both personally and in someone else is simple but effective. There are life lessons and moral stories to be found in each volume, which I appreciate!
This is about as far as I got watching the anime (which I do not recommend). Season 2 takes place during this Omnibus, and it is abysmal. The art is awful and the story begins to deviate severely from the manga (and the character development isn't near as strong). So, do yourself a favour and read Tsubasa, but please don't watch it! The anime is a far cry from the epic CLAMP created.
Oh now we’re getting somewhere! I’m glad to finally get more info on the man behind the curtain, so to speak, and the Syaoran clone (?). Very curious to see the conclusion in the next omnibus of Ashura and Yasha’s story, too.
