While the other girls in the walled city-state of Baalboden learn to sew and dance, Rachel Adams learns to track and hunt. While they bend like reeds to the will of their male Protectors, she uses hers for sparring practice. The Defiance series by C. J. Redwine is rich postapocalyptic YA fantasy perfect for fans of Graceling and Tamora Pierce. Includes all three novels and one novella in the series.

Abandoning the ruins of their home to take their chances in the Wasteland, the group soon realizes their problems have only an unknown killer —possibly inside their ranks—has begun picking off the survivors one by one. And Rachel and Logan must question whether the price of freedom may be too great—and whether they can make it out of the Wasteland alive.
Rachel has been kidnapped by enemy forces and is being taken to Rowansmark while her love, Logan, is imprisoned and awaiting trial, unable to leave Lankenshire. As uneasy alliances are tested and their enemies plot against them, will the two manage to find a way to rid their world of the tyrannical Commander and destroy the tech that controls the deadly Cursed One once and for all?

Finally, a dark YA series told from two perspectives that didn't rip my heart out and stomp on it at the very end! I'm still looking at you, ALLEGIANT. Anyway, I really really really liked this series. It was a fun world filled with well-rounded characters, realism (especially when it came to pain– yikes!) and some harrowing adventures. Rachel was a powerful lead and Logan wasn't a stereotypical male lead, though I have to say that my love for them was rivalled by Quinn and Willow, two serious badasses that I only wanted more of. The characters were definitely the high point, since even the villains could be seen as real people. I was expecting a bit more of a battle at the very end, but I still thought the action was good. One thing I loved about the love story was that while there were troubles between Rachel and Logan, they didn't drag on between the books. They saw the problem, butted heads, worked together, solved it, kissed like maniacs. I hate it when romantic tension drags out unnecessarily, especially when it's supposed to be an all-consuming love like this. Definitely a great trilogy+novella, and I absolutely think you should check it out.
This series is well written and the plot is very interesting. But I couldn't get past my dislike for Rachel Adams. That's sad when your hoping someone will kill off the main character. She was head-strong, stupid and had little or no regard for the consequences her actions would bring upon others. And those were her good traits. Logan was too good for her.
Defiance (Defiance #1) - 2 stars After losing her father Rachel cones under the protection of Logan, her father’s apprentice. Living in the cruel world under the domination of the fierce commander Rachel has no choice but to follow his orders. When he sends her out on a mission to find the package her father had with him her life is not only put in danger but those of everyone she loves.
Rachel is supposed to be a strong heroic type of character. Flaunting the conventional standards unfairly placed upon herby the commander; instead of coming off that way though her attitude is one of pure anger and rashly doing things that clearly could get her loved ones killed. Not only that but her over the top aggressive behavior comes off spoiled and unlikable much the same as Logan. From the moment I started reading this I though Logan was a jerk. He adheres to the dominance of women in the society around him by his actions and words even though in his mind he says he isn't.
The plot was okay and I applaud the author for an unusual premise and use of creativity.
