Storm & Sacrifice

Rate this book
I was fifteen when my mother was killed by King Azemar Xeris. I’ve kept hidden for years, working the mines and keeping my head down.

Until I wake up on an altar, about to be a sacrifice for a dark ritual I don’t understand, with icy blue eyes glaring down at me.

I don’t make it far in my escape when Prince Xeris apprehends me, accusing me of crimes at the mine I’m certain I didn’t commit. But apparently, there have been other victims of these sacrifices, and I may be the only survivor.

To clear my name, I’ll have to work with the prince to find the killer and the purpose of this ritual. If only I could shake his familiar blue eyes.

The Autumn Equinox and Blood Moon are approaching, and I’m determined to be the last to suffer in this ritual. Even if I must work with the prince who has turned a blind eye to his kingdom’s suffering for years.

I just hope I’m not working with the very male who tried to sacrifice me.

Storm & Sacrifice was originally published in the limited Foes to Flames anthology that is no longer available for purchase. This rereleased version contains extra detail and deleted scenes, including a first look at the new Faeted Hearts series.

Please note that Storm & Sacrifice is a full length novella, which means despite the shorter word count, it is still a complete story.

If you are looking to dive into a short and sweet, spicy, romantasy story with family politics, interesting abilities/skills, feminine rage, and a SHADOW PRINCE - please look no further!

I had the amazing opportunity to first sample this story in a fall themed anthology called Foes to Flames and I fell in love with the author's unapologetic writing style. The attraction between the characters was written delicate tension and I enjoyed both of the MCs in this one! Even the side characters had a solid presence when they appeared throughout this book. The POV surprise is soooo delicious in this and everything I dreamed of. I really appreciated how right to the point this book was, no frills, none of that let's lose sight of the mission and completely get side tracked until book 2 situations here.

Recommend if you enjoy:
- Romantasy! I mean the MMC is a prince, dark haired (yes), most beautiful fae male with dark powers (I mean, say less)
- Touch her and you will lose your favorite appendage...
- One horse and one bed (she is really blessing us)
- MCs who don't like to share

Thank you so much Laura Winter for an arc of this solid start to an amazing series to come! Can't wait to check out more in this series!

I first read this story in the Foes to Flames anthology, but I loved the world so much that I immediately signed up to ARC read this version. I *may* have squealed in delight when I saw the new POV additions in this version. And again when I found out my favorite side character is getting his own story. 🥰

If you enjoy the following tropes this might be the novella for you:
- only 1 bed
- only 1 horse
- shadow powers
- hidden identity/powers
- prince and pauper
- enemies to lovers
- forced proximity
- touch her/him and 💀

There's a ton of action packed into this story. It starts out with the protagonist, Sera, waking up on an altar, about to be sacrificed for an mysterious ritual. After she barely escapes, she is apprehended by Prince Kaelen, the son of the man who killed Sera's mother 15 years ago.

After learning from the Prince that she's not the first victim (just the first to escape alive) she volunteers to be bait to trap the culprit behind the kidnappings and ritual sacrifices. Being forced to work with the prince, who she wants to hate due to his ties to the tyrant king, challenges Sera's preconceived ideas about Kaelen.

I tried. I got to 46%. I can’t tell you what this book is about because it just didn’t hold my attention.

It’s a fantasy novella so I thought it would be my thing, but no.

Thank you to Laura Winter for the ARC.

Plot 4.5/5
Characters 4.5/5
Ending 4/5
Interest 4.75/5

Overall 4.5/5

-I really enjoyed myself with this book. It was short and simple and really fast paced but I didn’t feel like it was too rushed. The world was interesting but could have been more developed as the magic system in general was quite unclear. The plot itself was clear and easy to follow and I was fully gripped.

-The characters were also really great to read about. Individually I liked them but I do wish they could have been more flushed out. Together, the two main characters had a great dynamic. I love how they started off with this disdain towards one another which then develops into a fake relationship turned real. I did feel like it was a bit too fast burn for my liking but we then understand why the characters feel the way they do so early on.

-The ending had some predictable elements but overall it was a really good read. I am not usually one for perfectly happily ever afters. And hence the shortness of the book, it was all very straight to the point. I did still really enjoy it and would love to read future books.

So even though this was a novella it contained everything, spice, enemies to lovers, secret rituals.

Seraphina is amazing to say the least, shes sassy and not afraid to say what she thinks... Of course prince Xeris now stuck working with her to uncover the secret rituals falls hard. Because of course he does and i fall for it every damn time yet i love it.

Their chemistry is incredible and that explosive ending was so well written for a novella, it felt like a full story because it had everything.

I loved this and cant wait for book 2.
(no cliffhanger book 2 is about another character).

Sera is in danger. She knew that the moment she woke up on an altar while a masked man attempted to sacrifice her. Will Prince Kaelan be her salvation or her undoing as they work together to solve the mystery of her abduction.

Give me a story with a mystery to solve and I am putty. Make the two solving it undeniably attracted to each other?! Yesssssssss. Winter built this story with excellent characters and then gave them amazing chemistry. Sera is a smart badass and confident in her choices. Kaelan is a shadow daddy and “only soft for her” vibes….deliciously perfect. I love Kaelan’s circle of support, and I am feral to read the upcoming second book of this series. Winter really hooked me into Faeted Hearts fully. She carefully lays out lore and world building that gives the reader plenty to look forward to without leaving us on a devastating cliff! Not saying there’s not a place for that, but I love how this story is tied up with direction for more story and character exploration.

Thank you Laura Winter for my ARC of Storm & Sacrifice.♥️

4.4⭐️
Tropes:
One Horse
Fated Mates
Magic system
Possessive MMC who’s supportive
Slow burn to Spice 🥵
Hidden identity

This is a romantasy novella that has everything that I adore and need in this genre! Sera and Prince Kaelan were the perfect duo. I loved the unexpected twists and mystery throughout the story.

Seraphina (Sera) is rescued from a blood sacrifice by Prince Xeris (Kaelan) and she has no clue how she got there. She allows the Prince to READ her (very unique magic system) so she can figure out what happened. Together they travel to his castle to solve the mystery. Like she says this was no virgin sacrifice. I love this FMC as she has a backbone and knows how to use it!

The whole time I was trying to unravel who Sera was and why was she almost sacrificed before being rescued. The tension and banter were great. Hello, one horse trope- thank you Laura for this. The ending was not what I expected. The slow burn to spice was perfectly executed! When he says “good girl”!!!!

A MMC who lets the FMC be their true self and then gets super happy when they show their viciousness. Yup, my favorite.
I loved the touch her and 💀 vibes!
As the story progressed, I was surprised more and more and then I couldn’t stop reading at 60% mark. I had to finish reading. I was happy to have the other POV after epilogue as it gave us another perspective of a certain chapter.
I can’t wait for the next one. Thank you again Laura for allowing me to read this ARC. ♥️

📖Book releases on 12/5.

This little novella actually slapped so hard. There were some great lines and even though a lot of tropes were thrown at it, it made sense since it was novella and it had me gasping, kicking my feet for more. And the world Laura created here was actually so interesting, it definitely surpassed my expectations and I look forward to reading the rest in the series.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

After escaping a sacrificial ritual, Sera is caught by Kaelan, aka Prince Xeris, who ropes her into his investigation to find out about the mystery killer - someone within his own family. As they work to solve the crime, sparks fly - literally and figuratively. Sera is a tempest, after all.

I really enjoyed the world this story is set in. While the series is called FAEted Mates, the addition of Seraphim was very intriguing, and I enjoyed learning about that race's history in Ereadia.

Sera herself is a great FMC. Most of the story is told from her POV, and while she's got some sass and a strong will, I like that it's not over-the-top. I love that Kaelan keeps up the running theme of her being a storm, because in the end, his words suddenly have so much more impact. Also, the fact that she's a terrible liar is adorable. Her memories also get tampered with multiple times, and it's a interesting play of dramatic irony to read Sera forget something that we just found out. Admittedly, I wish we could have seen her on the altar at the beginning, but we do get the replay through the magic of mind Reading, so it's close enough.

Kaelan banters with her really well. And I always love a good shadow user, and his shadows come out to PLAY, if you get my drift.

While there's some fun romantic buildup in the first half of the story (one horse, one bed, and fake lovers tropes for the win), the story really picks up its pace around the 60% mark and charges full-steam ahead to the stunning conclusion. Winter litters a ton of little clues throughout the story that don't always seem important at the time but come back to have significant impact later. That said, for putting much of this in Sera's POV, Winter plays a bit coy with the reader to save up all the details for the big reveal at the end.

Overall, this was an enjoyable novella that was quite well-written and has a fun cast of characters. I look forward to Malachi's story next, because as far as supporting characters go, he and his verbose mouth were delightful.

To all my burnt out readers we need to talk. Why have you not read Novellas yet? Is it because you feel like no one can create a story that fast in a short story? Well let me introduce you to Storm and Sacrifice because Laura Winter did it. So here’s a short and sweet review for a short and sweet book.

Storm and Sacrifice follows the story of Seraphina Tempest, who’s about to be sacrificed. Luckily she escapes only to be caught by the person she hates the most, Prince Kaelan Xeris who just so happens to be investigating strange murders. The two reluctantly team up to infiltrate the fae court and catch a killer all while trying to ignore the growing chemistry between them.

Now as a burnt out college student I sadly dont have time to read so when I got the ARC of Storm and Sacrifice I didn’t know how I’d feel about a novella. Guys! This scratched an itch in my brain I didn’t know needed to be scratched! I was able to take a seat, read this novella and go back to work feeling refreshed and happy. Under 100 pages you can actually read this in one sitting, but for a short book it’s not lacking in plot or romance, the plot was engaging and the banter was bantering! Kaelan wanting to just grovel and worship the ground Serpahina walked on was everything! Also you know it’s spicy, so all I can say is Storm and Sacrifice is the perfect thing to rot to when you’re having a long day and you need a break but can’t dedicate time to a book.

Could this be better as a 300+ page novel, of course, but for the length it was I was pleasantly surprised by how well I like it.

Things I liked: the way it fit plot and romance in under 100 pages, the brain rot.

Things I wished were better: the ending did have a few rushed plot points I wish were better but we still get a happily ever after.

Kalen and Sera’s tension in this book… whew! So good so hot and so angst filled!

I love a good shadow daddy x mouthy FMC pairing, it always bodes well for tension and spice when they finally give in.

The story was interesting, and I was invested in both of the main characters. Kalen is the typical shadow daddy price with powers and a broody disposition that hides a good name behind his facade. Sera is our mouthy FMC who has suffered and hates the prince, the royal family, the power but still has fire to help solve the murders.

I felt like the story was well written, and the plot was intriguing. Searching for the culprits of a ritualistic serial murder with the almost victim of the most recent attempt? Doing so with an infuriatingly handsome prince, who's father or family are most likely the culprits? So good! The push and pull between the 2 main characters was wonderful, and I cannot wait to see how the story continues on in book 2 from Malachi's perspective

Tropes I loved:
- he makes her eat to be healthy
- shadows with a mind of their own
- enemies to lovers
- fake dating
- fae powers
- ‘just while we are pretending’
- nicknames like Tempest and Prince

**CORRECTION** I now realize this is an extended novella, not a full novel. Therefore, this paragraph still stands but does not apply as much having this information! I think we are going to get more detail in the full length novels of the series!

I did feel like the end wrapped up pretty quickly, and lots of things were either wrapped up super fast or not explained well or at all, and I would have liked some more detail and connecting of the dots.

Excited for book 2!

This is book 1 in the Faeted Hearts series and features Sera and Kaelen (we love them both)! If you're looking for a good palette cleanser fantasy book that will be a fast read, look no further. Since this is on the shorter side, we get right to the plot and it moves fast so there really doesn't feel like there are any lulls.

When Sera wakes up on an altar in the middle of a sacrificial ritual, she is just about able to escape, but then meets Kaelen (shadow daddy prince) who is there to collect her for wrongly accused crimes. What follows is the best dynamic as they team up to uncover who is behind these sacrifices. The two of them have great banter, but the way they tease each other is *chefs kiss*. What surprised me most was how Kaelen's foreplay is having a strong woman talk down to him (power struggle almost reversal here in the best way), and how Sera perfectly matches his vibe with witty remarks.

Despite being the prince, Kaelen has a rough relationship with his father as he battles his overbearing rule in this impoverished kingdom. Not all is as it seems, which Sera comes to find the more she gets to know Kaelen.

We also have some great side characters in Malachi and Hella (Kaelen's best friends), which provide a lot of humor to the story.

Also, the bonus chapters are amazing and a nice touch to add a different POV!

Storm and Sacrifice
By Laura Winter

🖤 Romantasy Novella
🖤 Enemies to Lovers
🖤 Slow Burn until it's not 😉
🖤 Fated Mates
🖤 Shadow Play
🖤 Fae & Seraphim

Seraphina the sassy but strong FMC escapes a ritual with her life which has never before happened, so when she is found by the shadow daddy Prince MMC he takes interest in her to uncover how she escaped and who is behind it.
Sera of course is all for this because she also wishes to find out especially after her mother was unalived when she was younger, even if she has to pretend to be in a relationship with the shadow daddy Prince Xeris. But will they uncover the truths of what is happening? Or will the corruption within the royal family manipulate Sera's mind too much?

This book is incredible, filled with Crazy Royal family secrets, Fae with the ability to 'read' people, mind manipulations on a whole new level, mutual pining with the enemy that explodes 😉🤯 🥵 the way this is written is a way that draws you in and traps you, but in the best way 🫠😍

4.75 stars! I honestly loved this book, and I think I’ll love pretty much anything Laura writes. Her characters are incredibly well developed and written, the plot is incredibly fun and twisty, and the writing is just *chef’s kiss.*

Sometimes with spicy romantasy, I feel like the quality of writing tends to go down a little bit, but Laura’s technical writing skills are just so good, and her storytelling is unmatched. It’s honestly like if Brandon Sanderson wrote spicy romantasy and I LOVE IT.

Because this is a novella, the romance developed faster than my personal taste (I’m a slow burn girly), but that of course doesn’t affect my star rating because I knew it was a novella going into it.

I’m absolutely obsessed with Kaelan (hello new book boyfriend), and Sera is such an incredible fmc. I love her humor, spiciness, and general “I’m not a doormat” demeanor.

If you love fantasy romance with incredible writing and complex characters (and a kick-ass plot), do yourself a favor and read this book.

🌶️ Rating: RCRS 7/8 (romance with intense content)

This is my second read of Storm & Sacrifice, having first read it as part of the Foes to Flames anthology, and this time around it is just as good as the first - if not actually better because I got some bonus content sprinkled in!

Sera & Kaelan are a force to be reckoned with! It was such fun watching these two confident characters go from enemies to lovers to … and slowly trust one another their weaknesses and vulnerabilities. And, let’s face it: who doesn’t love a sexy shadow daddy who falls first, loves feeding his partner & is only soft for her? That right there is the trifecta!

(PS: the book comes with the first chapter in the second of the series which follows one of the side characters we meet here and let me just say it already has me in a chokehold 🤤)

Thank you to Laura Winter for the opportunity to read and review Storm & Sacrifice early.

I first read this in the limited edition Foes to Flames anthology (no longer available). This version is the same, but after the epilogue there are two bonus chapters that go over the events of two previous chapters but from the MMC’s perspective.

This story is surprisingly complex for how short it is, but unfortunately the brevity means it lacks development and that makes the climax feel a bit like it comes out of nowhere. Also, the POV for the first 2/3 of the story is all Sera, but it switched to Kaelan for three chapters right near the end, and that feels odd. I really like the bonus chapters from his POV. I think the chemistry between the characters would have been stronger if there had been more chapters from his POV. I’m going to guess that some of this was the result of this story originally being published in an anthology, so I’m really hoping the next book in the series is a little longer and more fully developed.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Plot - 4/5
Characters - 5/5
Spice - 🌶️

I am not usually one for fae romances but this absolutely hit the spot. This is a short and sweet novel focusing on our FMC, Sera, as she escapes a ritual and is promptly captured by the Prince, Kaelan.

Storm and Sacrifice jumps straight into the juicy parts of the story with Sera literally running away in page 1. I loved the tension between Sera and Kaelan and while it was fast building, it matched the overall pace of the story well.

The world building was great considering the length of the novel and you get a good feel for the MC’s and side characters as the story continues, although I would’ve loved just a little more information from Kaelan’s two friends (as they were often on side quests). I can’t wait for the release of Book 2 to find out more about them!

Tropes: one bed, enemies to lovers, fake dating, hidden identity, mates, shadow daddy

I absolutely loved this enemies to lovers novella! Laura is a master at writing tension, and even though it might be a quick read for some (I'm a slow reader who savors every line, but I know some could blast through this in a day), this piece is packed full of real emotional development and love between Sera and Kaelan--not to mention a heaping dose of steam. You definitely don't lose out on the complex ways these characters change, but if you're looking for spice where both characters vie for dominance, this is it! I also love the liberal use of swearing on these pages haha. The setting is really easy to fall into and feels immediately familiar but there's a unique twist on fae here that will feel brand new and really fun. Plus, who can say no to a murdery blood moon cult?

I cannot wait for the rest of this series, especially for Malachi's story!

I want to start off by saying that I was very impressed with the way that this novella was written. Typically, I feel like novellas can be rushed or they’re set in a larger continuing series. This one is a self-contained novella that will eventually be a part of interconnected standalone’s , and the author did an incredible job setting her self up for success.

We find ourselves following our two main characters as they unravel a mysterious group of people performing ritualistic sacrifices. This is a spicy enemies to lovers story that involves the fae, political intrigued, and a mystery that keeps you engaged, wanting to find out how it ends.

Both the writing and the character development was pretty strong and the author was very clear and sustict around the world building. I really enjoyed myself and look forward to reading the next one!

Are you looking for a quick, entertaining, witty read? This is it! I was hooked by the premise immediately.

Seraphina awakes on an altar as part of a ritual she isn’t a willing participant in. She manages to escape but she is met by the Prince of the kingdom that has taken her mother’s life.

Seraphina and Prince Kaelan now find themselves working together reluctantly to figure out more about the ritual and who is behind it. There begins the banter and entertaining dynamic between the two. I don’t want to spoil anything else but the ending was unexpected and I really enjoyed Kaelan’s POV being included at the end.

There is humor, spice, and mystery. Everything you need for an entertaining read. My only complaint is that it wasn’t longer!

I have read over fifty books this year, and I have come across some really good books that are worth waiting for the next book in the series. However, with Storm & Sacrifice, I simply CANNOT wait until the next book.

I LOVED everything about this novella. I say that a lot for other books, but I GENUINELY loved this one. The romance and the teasing banter were both written phenomenally where it didn’t feel forced or fake. It had felt as though our two main characters, Kaelan and Sera, both actually liked each other and the romance was slowly growing the way a normal relationship would.

As for the fantasy aspect, there are some really interesting mysteries included as well as a fantastical lore about the world. It all concludes perfectly leaving just enough to set up the next book, which, again, I’m so excited for it to release soon (IDK when, just hope that it’s soon or I’ll suffer some serious withdrawals).

Final note, that villain (can’t say their name; that’d be too spoiler-y) can kick my butt. They’re lucky they haven’t caught these fists for what they did to my babies.

I first read and loved *Storm & Sacrifice* in the limited time release *Foes to Flames* anthology. When I heard the story was going to be rereleased with extra detail, I immediately jumped at the chance to read it in advance. My feelings about this novella remain the same - it’s an absolute banger, from start to finish. Despite the short length, author Laura Winter manages to balance immersive world building, the central mystery, and fantastic banter between the two leads. If I had any point of criticism, it’s that I read it too quickly - I selfishly wanted to stay in this world with these characters for many more pages! Thankfully, this is the first installment in the new Faeted Hearts series, which means we won’t have to say goodbye to this setting just yet.

Wowwww! This is how a Shadow Daddy should be written! And a strong female lead who can very much hold her own and save the day, yes please! I immediately fell in love with Sera and Kaelan, they are perfect for one another. The story is full of wonderful banter, great world building, good plot with a few twists.

I didn’t think the story could get any better then there are a few added chapters at the end that had me kicking my feet. I wish more authors did what Laura did with those final chapters. Absolutely amazing!

I received an advanced readers copy of Storm and Sacrifice. All opinions are my own.

This book is short but sweet, with strong writing and a compelling story. However, I couldn't help but feel it was a bit rushed, leaving too many aspects underdeveloped. The pacing often pulled me out of the experience, especially when it came to the development of relationships between characters—believability is key, even in fantasy. If the book had been longer and allowed for more space to flesh out these connections, it could have easily been my favorite read of the year. Despite this, I'm definitely looking forward to more from this author.

Enemies??? Where? For all of 4 pages??
I do get that this is a short book, but in what WORLD are they implying they know eachother better than anyone ever could when this book takes place over approximately FIVE days? If you say so I guess..
You don’t get a chance to know them and without spoiling, the whole “reading” power is a pain in the ASS

PS I will say that they are somewhat likeable, even if I don’t know them well, but there is no substance to anyyyy side characters at all so the following books on other characters don’t appeal to me

A fantasy book under 300 pages that still manages to weave a great story and give me a badass fmc and swoon-worthy mc? Yes please!

I really needed this after coming off a really long series. It's the perfect palette cleanser to cure a book hangover.

I love Sera and Kaelan. His POV chapters really helped me to understand him better, and then I liked him even more. If anyone deserves a break in life, it's Sera. But she remained strong and true, and I really loved her sass.

Can't wait to read more of this series!

Dark rituals. Fated mates. A prince with icy blue eyes & a girl destined to reveal the darkness before she lets herself become a sacrifice…👀

Seraphina (FMC) & Kaelan (MMC) were such a perfect contrast. The tension, the enemies to lovers pull, and the YEARNINGG! ❤️‍🔥 There was such great chemistry between the two and mixing that with the hunt to uncover the truth made this such an addicting read. Honorable mention is Hella…I loved her so much. 🥰

This was such a quick read, I devoured it in a little more than two hours!

Thank you to the author for the ARC!
