Winter has come. Leaving Sammy behind, the other cats have gone to find shelter and better hunting grounds. Out scavenging for food, Sammy and his companion Pinkie find themselves trapped in a delivery van speeding towards an unknown destination.
Colin Dann (born 1943 in Richmond, Surrey (now part of London)) is an English author. He is best known for his The Animals of Farthing Wood series of books, which was subsequently made into an animated series.
Dann worked at the publishing firm William Collins Sons & Co. for thirteen years, and his first novel, The Animals of Farthing Wood, was written during this period. The original cover for this and a dozen others was painted by Portal artist Frances Broomfield.
Colin Dann, recipient of Britain's Arts Council National Award for Children's Literature, is also the author of six sequels and a prequel to The Animals of Farthing Wood.
I've always loved reading Colin Dann's books, so a few months ago I decided to start tracking down those books missing from my collection as well as those I'd never even read or heard of. I absolutely adored 'The King of the Vagabonds' the first time I read it, but was unaware it had a sequel. A bit of research and I turned up this lovely little gem!
I should add that I bought this book from Thriftbooks, an online secondhand book website. This is my first order from them, of seven Colin Dann books. Living in Australia is definitely bad in this regard, as the first of four packages sent arrived exactly twenty days after my order. Still no sign of the other three. Hopefully the show up soon so I can get a clearer picture of this site, and whether I should buy from them again.
The book itself was a delight, a fine example of animal fiction. I would recommend reading them together, the first book followed by this one. Always love cat fiction! Four stars!
This is the kind of book I would have loved as a child! It's not the life-changing 'must-read' kind of book, but it's an enjoyable book that's quick to read!
