Backyard Hullabaloo

Rate this book
Suitable for readers aged 6 and up
One morning, Mr. Bagoo oversleeps by a full hour. As a result, the birds in his aviary don’t get fed on time. And hungry, caged birds, as you probably know, are very loud birds.
This is not a good thing if you live in the middle of a quiet neighborhood, for this attracts the attention of the neighbors.
And Mr. and Mrs. Bark next door are the most troublesome neighbors anyone can ever have...

Backyard Hullabaloo is a hilarious story about two retired neighboring couples, the Barks and the Bagoos. The Barks are jealous, mean, and vindictive. They always want to outdo the friendly and good-natured Bagoos. But no matter how vindictive they are, their malicious actions always backfire. Meanwhile, the unsuspecting Bagoos, who live next door, simply carry on with their day, blissfully unaware of their neighbors’ distaste for them. The riotous, must-read story is complemented by beautifully drawn illustrations painted in watercolor.

Perfect for an evening of fun and laughter. It will surely elicit plenty of giggles from its young readers.

I was lucky enough to find this book for free via BookBub!

Backyard Hullabaloo is a fun and spunky picture book by Junia Wonders and Divin Meir!

What I liked about this book was that there was a little more reading content in it. The picture books I have been picking up lately had barely a sentence per page, but this book had multiple sentences and even paragraphs per page! Having a little more content made this book a little more fun and inventive when I was reading it.

We follow Mr. Bagoo, who overslept since his alarm clock didn't ring! We also meet his neighbors along the way as he tries to get his chores done! Everyone seems to be in a bad mood for some reason! Mr. Bagoo and his neighbor aren't getting along, and they must solve their issues with each other.

I also loved that there was no rhyming scheme to this book - it moved at a nice pace and didn't feel forced. It was written in a tone that felt professional and yet humorous or child-like all at the same time.

The artwork was a style I don't see to often - it looked like digital crayons! I really liked this different art style, especially since it felt like it belonged with the story. I couldn't see any other art style fitting with the tone and silliness of this book!

Overall, I'd highly recommend this book! It's a great picture book with a fantastic story! I could see this book easily being used for story time at a school!

Four out of five stars!

Check out the review at Bark and Bagoo: Backyard Hullabaloo > Review

This book should be read with changing voice and lots of action. Both parents and children will have so much fun with this one.

I am already a fan of Junia Wonders. She really does wonders with her books. This book is equally colorful and beautifully Illustrated. But this one has got more action than Boy and the Very Lost Pony.

Mr. Barks and Mr. Bagoo are neighbors. Mr. Bagoo is a happy go lucky guy whereas Mr. Barks is an ex-military man. These differences are enough to say how much Hullabaloo might be happening in their neighborhood.

It is a truly beautiful book with so much colours and pictures in it. The action in it also will help the kids to be hooked. Such a nice one.

A beautifully crafted tale of revelry between neighbors, the consequences and the choices to make things right. Charming, with colorful illustrations and interesting characters. Young readers between will truly be delighted. Educators, Librarians, parents, and grandparents, pick up your copy soon, you will be glad you did. Well done!

Enjoyed it!

My granddaughter's favorite part was the worms, slugs and ducks. It was a good story for us to read together.

Simple book

Simple story to learn good lesson for kids. I've enjoyed similar stories in my childhood. I love the same now. This story reminded me of those days.

The Bagoo family and the Bark Family are neighbors. Every day Mr. Bagoo has a routine when he wakes up he feeds his birds and does his chores. But this day Mr. Bagoo has overslept and his birds are squawking so loud that their noise annoys neighbor Mr. Bark. Mr. Bark has never been a big fan of the Bagoo family and decides to get revenge on his neighbors for the lack of silence.

The title of this book, Backyard Hullabaloo, made me think that this was going to be about a party or dance. I was surprised to find out it was more a story on how people react to circumstances they don’t have control over and their reactions to ones they do. Mr. Bark reacts terribly while Mr. Bagoo looks on the bright side of everything. The drawings of Mr. Bark reminded me of the Pie Man from the original Strawberry Shortcake.

I did not care for Mr. Bark which is probably part of what the author wanted, but I also did not like Mrs. Bark. She seemed to just follow her husband's lead and not think for herself.

Backyard Hullabaloo is a surprising book because there are things that happen you would not even think of happening. I think children from ages 2 and up will enjoy this story and will laugh at the absurd.

No Lesson Learned

In children’s picture books, if you have a grumpy, hateful character, I always look forward to the lesson that redeem this ornery character. However, while Mr. Bark realized that Mr. Bagoo made a profit on his plan to harm his neighbor, he didn’t stop to think that I am only hurting myself. Mr. Bark never reconciles with his neighbor; Mr. Bagoo always is apologetic for what he cannot control, but Mr. Bark is too hateful to make peace with his neighbor. He is too demanding to realize that he is only hurting himself health-wise by being demanding and hateful to his wife, and she flatly seems to be a “grass is greener on the other side” woman. I get that the focus of the author is having a hullabaloo in the backyards, and that is certainly accomplished, but the story is incomplete, which is kind of sad since the artwork is fun and the story has great potential.

Too wordy and yet no point

There were too many words on each page, too much going on to capture my kiddos' attention. And yet, there was no lesson to be learned, no point to be made. What a worthless story!

I didn't like it. Mean characters and hard to follow with too many details for children.
